The Auburn online MSN is ranked No. 81 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Online Master’s in Nursing Programs, eight places higher than the year before. Auburn University’s College of Nursing in Alabama offers two MSN tracks, a primary care Family Nurse Practitioner and a Nurse Educator, plus a dual option that adds educator courses to the NP. Both are primarily online with one or two campus visits each semester.
Can a nurse living in Nigeria, Ghana or elsewhere abroad enrol? No, in practice. Auburn requires a current, unencumbered U.S. RN licence in the state where your clinicals happen, the regular campus visits need you in the U.S., and an online degree does not qualify for an F-1 student visa. For U.S.-licensed nurses, tuition is a flat $607 per credit hour whether you live in Alabama or not. The Auburn online MSN deadline for the summer 2027 intake is 1 March 2027. I checked these details on Auburn’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Auburn online MSN ranking
Auburn’s College of Nursing posted on 27 January 2026 that its online master’s programme ranked No. 81 nationally in the 2026 U.S. News Best Online Programs, an eight-spot rise. The same post lists two specialty placings that are more flattering: No. 6 for the family nurse practitioner and a tie for No. 4 in nursing education.
Those specialty results matter more than the overall number if you already know which track you want. Auburn only offers those two tracks, and both rank well inside their categories.
Auburn online MSN tracks
| Track | Credits | Full-time length | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family Nurse Practitioner (primary care NP) | 50 for students admitted fall 2025 or later | Six semesters | Primarily online, campus visits each semester, three NP intensives |
| Nurse Educator | Not stated on the pages I checked | Three semesters | Primarily online, campus visits each semester |
| Dual option (FNP plus Nurse Educator graduate certificate) | FNP credits plus certificate courses | Not stated | Primarily online |
To take the dual option, you apply to the NP track first, then email the graduate programmes administrator after acceptance. Auburn also runs post-graduate certificates in both specialties, a post-master’s DNP for nurse practitioners (summer entry, five semesters full time) and a PhD.
Inside the FNP
- Year one core: professionalism and leadership, rural and underserved health, advanced pathophysiology, pharmacology and health assessment, evidence-based practice, nursing theory, quality and safety, and informatics.
- Year two clinicals: Primary Care Practicum I, Primary Care Women and Children, and Primary Care Practicum II, each 7 to 8 credits for recent entrants. All core courses must be finished before clinicals start.
- Intensives: three NP intensives with simulation, lab work and community practice, each lasting up to a week.
- Clinical hours: the Graduate Bulletin gives credit values, not hours, so ask Auburn for the total.
Can international nurses apply to the Auburn online MSN?
Auburn directs international applicants to the Graduate School’s international instructions and gives a contact, but the MSN rules decide the matter for anyone outside the U.S.
| Your situation | Can you enrol? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Living outside the U.S. with only a home-country licence | No, in practice | Auburn requires an unencumbered U.S. RN licence in the state of your clinicals, and campus visits happen every semester |
| Wanting an F-1 student visa | No | U.S. F-1 rules count very few online courses toward full-time study, so an online programme with short campus visits cannot support the visa |
| Foreign-educated RN licensed and living in Alabama | Yes, if you meet the rest | Same rules as any other applicant |
| U.S. RN in another state | Likely, after checking clinical availability | Auburn’s licensure disclosure says the MSN meets requirements in all 50 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico, but out-of-state applicants are asked to confirm clinical placement in their state |
For out-of-state clinical questions, Auburn names Jennifer Edwards (jlr0012@auburn.edu) and the MSN coordinator (rls0080@auburn.edu). International questions go to Laura Fuller in the Graduate School (lbf0005@auburn.edu, 334-844-2143).
The route for a foreign-educated nurse
- Have your nursing education evaluated for the state board you choose, usually through CGFNS (TruMerit).
- Meet the board’s English rule with IELTS, TOEFL or OET as that board specifies.
- Pass the NCLEX-RN and get an unencumbered licence in the state where you will do clinicals.
- Move to the U.S. on a work or immigrant visa, usually employer-sponsored, and gain U.S. experience.
- Apply to Auburn through the Graduate School, sending official transcripts, and confirm clinical availability in your state.
Auburn online MSN requirements
- A BSN from an accredited nursing programme, or an approved waiver.
- A current, unencumbered U.S. RN licence in the state where your clinical experience will happen.
- A nursing GPA of at least 3.0. Below that, provisional admission is possible and is lifted after 9 graduate hours at 3.0 or higher.
- An undergraduate statistics course with a C or better.
- Three references through Auburn’s online form.
- A professional goal statement of about 500 words.
- A CV or resume and official transcripts sent to the Graduate School.
- An interview, if required. No GRE.
The MSN listing does not set a minimum amount of nursing experience, though the post-graduate certificate asks for one year. Once enrolled, you need at least a B in every course, and two grades below B lead to dismissal. Auburn’s international instructions cover English tests and foreign transcripts; I did not verify those minimums for this guide, so check them with the Graduate School.
Auburn online MSN deadlines
| Start term | Study mode | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Summer 2027 | Full time or part time | 1 March 2027 |
| Fall 2027 | Part time only | 1 June 2027 |
| Spring 2028 | Part time only | 1 October 2027 |
The spring 2027 deadline, 1 October 2026, has passed. One conflict to note: the College’s graduate page puts the full-time intake in summer, while the Graduate Bulletin’s FNP listing says full-time students are admitted only in fall. Ask the College which applies to your entry year.
Auburn online MSN tuition
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition per credit hour, Alabama and out-of-state | $607 |
| Professional fee, NURS 7110 | $200 |
| Professional fee, NURS 7330, 7440, 7550 and 7920 | $300 per course |
| FNP estimate, 50 credits plus the five professional fees (my calculation) | About $31,750 |
The College’s page does not state the academic year for these rates and says tuition and fees can change at the start of any term. My FNP figure assumes you take all five fee-bearing courses and excludes university fees, travel and clinical costs. The same price for every state is the main financial draw: a nurse in Georgia or Texas pays what an Alabama nurse pays.
Costs not covered by tuition
- Travel and accommodation for one or two campus visits each semester and the week-long NP intensives.
- Background check, drug screen and liability insurance, which Auburn lists as possible extra costs.
- Course-specific requirements and equipment.
- Lost income during the second-year clinical courses.
- The FNP certification exam after graduation.
Scholarships and financial aid
U.S. federal student aid goes only to citizens and eligible non-citizens. The College’s graduate page does not list scholarships for international or online students, so plan around employer support or savings.
Accreditation
Auburn’s College of Nursing hosted a CCNE re-accreditation visit on 8 to 10 April 2024, according to a College news post. The graduate page itself does not name an accreditor or publish certification pass rates. Ask for the current CCNE status and FNP pass rate when you contact the College.
How to write the Auburn goal statement
Auburn asks for about 500 words on your professional goals. The FNP curriculum opens with rural and underserved health, which tells you what the faculty care about.
- State the track, or the dual option, in your first paragraph.
- Describe the patients you want to serve as an NP or the learners you want to teach, with a real example.
- If you trained or worked in a low-resource setting, connect it to rural and underserved care in the U.S.
- Show you have planned for campus visits and clinical placements in your state.
For illustration only, an FNP applicant might open like this:
“Before I moved to Alabama, I ran the immunisation clinic at a rural health centre in Kano State, where the nearest doctor was two hours away. The county I work in now has the same gap, and I want to close it as a family nurse practitioner.”
Common mistakes foreign-educated nurses make
- Calling it fully online: Auburn expects you on campus once or twice a semester.
- Applying before U.S. licensure: the RN licence must already be current and unencumbered.
- Missing the one full-time intake: part-time students have three entry points, full-time students have one.
- Not asking about clinical sites: if you live outside Alabama, get written confirmation that Auburn can place you.
- Confusing Auburn with AUM: Auburn University at Montgomery runs its own nursing programmes with separate rules and fees.
Who should apply
Auburn fits U.S.-licensed RNs, especially in the Southeast, who want a family NP or nurse educator MSN at one price for every state and can travel to campus a few times a year. Its specialty rankings for FNP and nursing education are strong.
It does not fit nurses living abroad, anyone needing a student visa, or nurses who want psychiatric, acute care or leadership tracks. Get your U.S. licence first, then compare the options below.
