The University of Pittsburgh admission requirements for international students are lighter than most people expect from a research university of its size. You apply through the Common App or Pitt’s own application, send your secondary school transcripts and final exam results, prove your English, and answer Pitt’s short-answer questions in place of a personal statement. SAT and ACT scores are optional. Pitt admits on a rolling basis, so a decision usually arrives six to eight weeks after your file is complete.
Getting in is realistic for a strong student: Pitt admitted 38,477 of 64,724 first-year applicants for fall 2025, an acceptance rate of about 59%. Paying is the harder part. Pitt says plainly that need-based financial aid is not available to international students, and its only automatic help is a merit scholarship of up to $10,000 a year for international first-years who apply by 1 February. This guide covers the costs, the scholarship, the tests, the deadlines for fall 2027 and the mistakes to avoid, all checked on Pitt’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
University of Pittsburgh ranking
In the U.S. News 2027 Best Colleges edition, released on 22 September 2026, Pitt is ranked #59 among National Universities. The U.S. News profile page itself could not be loaded for this guide, so that position comes from news coverage of the 2027 edition (FOX29 Philadelphia’s list of Pennsylvania schools in the top 100).
A rank near 60 puts Pitt in the same band as many large flagship public universities. For an international student the more useful facts are the ones below: how selective it is, what it costs and what money exists.
University of Pittsburgh acceptance rate and class profile
Pitt’s Common Data Set for 2025-26 (fall 2025 entry) gives these figures for the Pittsburgh campus.
| Measure (fall 2025, Pitt CDS 2025-26) | Figure |
|---|---|
| First-year applicants | 64,724 |
| Admitted | 38,477 |
| Acceptance rate | About 59.4% |
| Enrolled first-years | 5,876 |
| Nonresident (international) first-years enrolled | 152 |
| Waitlist offers / admitted from waitlist | 6,245 / 84 |
| SAT middle 50% (submitters only) | 650 to 720 reading and writing; 630 to 730 maths |
| ACT composite middle 50% | 29 to 33 |
| Average high school GPA | 4.06 (weighted) |
| Total undergraduates | 21,388 (808 nonresident) |
| Student to faculty ratio | 14 to 1 |
Pitt does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants; that line of its Common Data Set is left blank. The figures to note are 152 international first-years in a class of 5,876, and only about 40% of enrolled students sending an SAT score. The CDS lists the rigour of your school record, your academic GPA and your application essay as “very important”, and lists test scores only as “considered”. Pitt has no Early Decision or Early Action plan.
University of Pittsburgh tuition for international students in 2026-27
Pitt charges international students the out-of-state rate, which differs by school. The table below uses the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, where most first-years start, and Pitt’s 2026-27 published rates.
| Cost item (2026-27, Dietrich School, on campus) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Out-of-state tuition | $43,328 |
| Mandatory fees (activity, wellness, computing, transport) | $2,152 |
| International Services Fee ($500 a term) | $1,000 |
| Housing (on campus) | $10,374 |
| Food | $6,118 |
| Books, transport and personal costs (Pitt’s estimate) | $4,162 |
| Estimated total before health insurance | $67,134 |
Tuition is higher in other schools: $47,312 in Engineering, $48,812 in Business, $49,532 in Computing and Information and $55,072 in Nursing for 2026-27. Health insurance is extra and required for full-time international students; Pitt’s 2025-26 financial document handout used $2,775 for 12 months. That same handout asked Dietrich applicants to show $69,445 for the I-20, based on 2024-25 costs, so expect the 2027-28 figure you must prove to be higher.
University of Pittsburgh scholarships for international students
Pitt’s need-based aid and most of its big named awards are closed to you. The Chancellor’s Scholarship, the University Scholarships and the Nordenberg and Stamps awards all require US citizenship or permanent residency. What international first-years can get is this:
- Award: an international student scholarship of up to $10,000 a year.
- Length: generally eight full-time undergraduate terms (four years).
- Who qualifies: incoming international first-years starting in the fall term. International transfer students are not eligible.
- How to apply: there is no separate form. You are reviewed automatically if your application and credentials are complete by 1 February and you have answered the short-answer questions.
- Decisions: made weekly on a rolling basis, with all recipients told by 1 April.
- To keep it: maintain a 3.0 GPA and satisfactory academic progress.
Because awards go out weekly, applying in the autumn gives you a better shot than waiting for the 1 February cut-off. Pitt does not publish how many international students receive the scholarship or what the average award is; its Common Data Set leaves those cells blank.
Funding warning
Pitt states that financial aid is not available to international students. Beyond the merit award of up to $10,000 a year, you will need to show funds for the rest of a cost that runs above $67,000 a year before you can get your I-20.
Pitt admission requirements for international students: the application
Pitt accepts the Common App or the University of Pittsburgh Application and says it has no preference between them. The application fee is $55 and is non-refundable. A full international file contains:
- Application form: Common App or Pitt application, with your choice of campus (Pitt has five), school and intended major. Choosing “undecided” does not affect your review.
- Short-answer questions: international applicants answer short-answer questions instead of the personal statement that US applicants write. Pitt’s guidance says strong answers stay under 1,500 characters each.
- Transcripts and exam results: your full secondary record plus national exam results such as WAEC, KCSE, IGCSE, A-levels or the IB, with certified English translations where needed. Unlike US applicants, you do not fill in the Self-Reported Academic Record.
- English test: TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo results unless you qualify for a waiver.
- Test scores (optional): SAT or ACT if you want them considered.
- InitialView interview (optional): Pitt accepts an InitialView recording as extra evidence of your communication skills. Pitt itself does not interview.
Testing policy
Pitt’s admissions pages describe the Pittsburgh campus as test-optional, and its 2025-26 Common Data Set records SAT and ACT as “not required, but considered if submitted”. Pitt superscores the SAT and takes your highest ACT composite. Applying without scores does not count against you for admission, scholarships or the Frederick Honors College, according to Pitt. Send a score if it sits inside or above the ranges in the table above.
English requirements
Pitt calls these scores “competitive” for the Pittsburgh campus rather than strict minimums:
| Test | Competitive score for Pittsburgh campus |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (incl. Home Edition) | 100+, with each section 21+ |
| IELTS Academic (IELTS Indicator accepted) | 7.0, with each band 6.0+ |
| Duolingo English Test | 125+ |
Applicants with a TOEFL of 95 to 99 and a strong record still receive “strong consideration”. Pitt does not accept TOEFL MyBest scores or TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL code is 2927.
You can request a waiver if you have never taken an English test and you meet one exception. The exceptions include an SAT reading and writing score of 660+, an ACT English score of 27+, or citizenship of an exempt country. The exempt list includes Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, The Gambia, Mauritius, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica and most of English-speaking Canada. Waivers are case by case: you email pitt.admissions@pitt.edu at least three business days after applying, and you hear back within five business days. All admitted international students also sit an English test after arriving on campus.
University of Pittsburgh deadlines for fall 2027
Pitt reads applications on a rolling basis from late August. It opened applications on 1 August 2026.
| Fall 2027 date | What it is for |
|---|---|
| 1 August 2026 | Application opened |
| Late August 2026 onward | Rolling review begins; decisions 6 to 8 weeks after your file is complete |
| 1 December 2026 | Frederick Honors College application deadline |
| 1 February 2027 | International scholarship deadline (complete application and credentials) |
| 1 April 2027 | Final fall deadline for international first-years; scholarship recipients notified by this date |
Pitt does not publish a time zone for these dates. Treat them as Eastern Time and submit a day early. If you also want a January start, the spring 2027 international deadline was 1 October 2026.
How to answer Pitt’s short-answer questions
Pitt’s form for international applicants asks you to answer its short-answer questions in place of a personal statement. The exact wording appears in your application portal. The guidance attached to them is the useful part: Pitt reviews them for quality rather than length, the best answers run under 1,500 characters each (about 250 words), and answers can help when you have circumstances that affected your record.
That is a small space, so plan each answer around one point:
- Answer the question in the first line: the reader moves through thousands of files, so do not warm up.
- Give one specific example: a project, a job, a responsibility at home, a club you ran. Name it and say what you did.
- Connect it to Pitt: name a programme, a school or an opportunity in Pittsburgh that fits, and say why.
- Explain any gap briefly: a strike that shut your school, a family illness, a change of curriculum. State the facts once and move on.
A sample opening, for illustration only: “For two years I kept the accounts for my mother’s provisions shop in Ibadan, and the day our ledger balanced to the last naira was the day I decided to study finance.”
The Frederick Honors College needs its own short answer, due 1 December 2026, so start that one first if you want honors consideration.
What happens after you apply to Pitt
- Checklist: Pitt sets up an application checklist that shows missing items. Check it within a week of submitting.
- Review: your file goes to committee once it is complete. Decisions follow in about six to eight weeks.
- Scholarship: if your file was complete by 1 February, you are considered automatically; you hear by 1 April.
- Deposit and finances: after admission you pay the enrollment deposit and submit proof of financial support for the I-20.
- Visa: with the I-20 you pay the SEVIS fee and book an F-1 visa interview at the US embassy or consulate in your country.
- Arrival: you sit Pitt’s English placement test on campus, and you may be placed in English as a Second Language classes if the English Language Institute recommends it.
Common mistakes international applicants make with Pitt
- Waiting for the “deadline”: rolling admission and weekly scholarship decisions reward early files. Submitting in March can mean full admission but no scholarship.
- Expecting need-based aid: Pitt offers none to international students. Build your budget around the $10,000 maximum, not more.
- Sending the wrong English score: MyBest and TOEFL Essentials are rejected, and TOEFL iBT scores must come from one test date.
- Assuming a waiver is automatic: even if your country is on the exempt list, you must email for a waiver after applying.
- Treating the short answers as optional: they are required, and without them you are not considered for the international scholarship.
- Choosing an expensive school blindly: Nursing tuition is about $11,700 a year more than Dietrich. Check your school’s rate before you apply.
Costs the Pitt scholarship does not cover
Even with the full $10,000 award, an international student in Dietrich still has roughly $57,000 a year to find, before insurance. Other costs to plan for:
- Health insurance: required, about $2,775 for 12 months on Pitt’s last published figure.
- Summer living costs: Pitt’s I-20 figures assume 12 months of living expenses, $24,240 in the 2025-26 handout, not just the 8-month school year.
- Flights and visa: the SEVIS fee, the visa application fee and return flights are your own cost.
- Winter clothing: Pittsburgh winters are cold and snowy, which is a real first-year expense for students from warm countries.
- Rising tuition: costs can change each year, so the scholarship covers a smaller share over time.
Majors, campus and city
Pitt’s Pittsburgh campus sits in Oakland, the city’s university and hospital district, next to Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). That location shapes its strengths: health sciences, nursing, pharmacy, public health, rehabilitation sciences and biomedical research, alongside engineering, computing and information, business and the arts and sciences. Undergraduates apply to a home school such as Dietrich (arts and sciences), Swanson (engineering), Computing and Information, Business or Nursing.
Other features worth knowing:
- Guaranteed Admissions Programs: Pitt offers guaranteed places in one of 23 graduate programmes to selected first-years. You may apply to only one.
- Frederick Honors College: optional, with its own short answer and a 1 December deadline.
- Five campuses: the application lets you list up to three of Pitt’s campuses. The regional campuses (Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown and Titusville) cost less and accept lower English scores, roughly TOEFL 80 to 94, IELTS 6.5 or Duolingo 115 to 120.
Pittsburgh itself is a mid-sized city with a lower cost of living than Boston or New York, and four distinct seasons.
University of Pittsburgh graduate admissions in brief
Graduate applications go to each school or programme, not to the undergraduate admissions office, and deadlines differ by programme. English requirements for graduate study are also set by schools; the Swanson School of Engineering and the School of Social Work, for example, publish their own pages. Funding for doctoral students usually comes through the department as teaching or research assistantships, while most master’s students pay their own way. Check the programme page for its fee, deadline and funding terms before applying.
Pitt compared with similar public universities
Pitt sits at the expensive end of this group, with a smaller merit award than Arizona and no AES-style tuition reduction like UT Dallas.

Who should apply to Pitt
Apply if you have a strong academic record, want a large research university with a big health sciences presence, and your family or a sponsor can cover around $57,000 to $70,000 a year after any Pitt scholarship. Students aiming for medicine, nursing, pharmacy or public health later will find Pitt’s links to UPMC useful. Strong students who prefer to skip the SAT can apply without it.
Pitt is a poor fit if you need need-based aid or a full scholarship. In that case, look at universities that meet full need for international students, starting with our list of the best American scholarships for international students and our Yale University scholarships guide.
