Columbia Business School MBA admission requirements for international students are a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, a GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment score, a resume, one recommendation, a 50-character short answer, three essays and a $250 application fee. Interviews are by invitation and are usually held with Columbia alumni near where you live. Columbia’s application checklist does not list an English test.
Columbia is tied at No. 7 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools ranking, released in April 2026. It admitted 25.7% of applicants for the class that started in 2025, and 41% of that class was international. Round 1 closed on 9 September 2026, so for August 2027 entry the deadline is Round 2 on 5 January 2027 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Budget about $143,000 for the first year. I checked everything below on 29 October 2026.
Columbia Business School MBA ranking and key numbers
In the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools edition, published on 7 April 2026, Columbia shares No. 7 with NYU Stern. These are the numbers most international applicants ask about first.

Columbia MBA acceptance rate and class profile
Columbia received 7,477 applications for the class that started in 2025 and admitted 25.7%. Poets&Quants lists 20.9% for the year before and 22.4% the year before that, so the rate moves by a few points each cycle. The latest published profile, for the Class of 2027, looks like this:
- Size: 982 students, made up of 758 August entrants and 224 January (J-Term) entrants.
- International share: 41%, down from 46% the year before.
- Tests: average GMAT Focus 690, average GMAT 10th Edition 734, average GRE 163 Verbal and 163 Quant.
- Grades: average undergraduate GPA of 3.6.
- Experience: five years on average, mostly from financial services (30%), consulting (23%), tech (12%) and media or marketing (10%).
- Women: 46%.
Columbia publishes averages, not medians or ranges, so you can’t see how far below 690 admitted students went. I would aim for at least the average if your work history is ordinary, and accept a lower score only if the rest of your file is unusually strong.
Columbia Business School MBA requirements for international students
- Degree: a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited institution. Report your GPA exactly as it appears on your transcript.
- Transcripts: PDF scans from every undergraduate and graduate school you attended. If admitted, you send encrypted digital copies, and the offer is not binding until Columbia verifies them.
- Test: a self-reported GMAT, Executive Assessment or GRE score, valid for five years. Only your highest score counts and sections from different sittings are not combined. Codes: GMAT and EA QF8-N6-52, GRE 6442. No test waiver is described.
- English test: the application checklist does not list TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo. Your essays and alumni interview show your English.
- Resume: ideally one page, two at most.
- Recommendation: one letter, ideally from your current supervisor if you have worked full time for at least six months. The recommender should use a work email address, and the suggested length is up to 1,000 words.
- Short answer and essays: explained in full below.
- Fee: US$250, non-refundable. Waivers exist for full-time students, active-duty US military, eligible displaced persons and current Peace Corps or Teach For All members, with proof.
Columbia warns that a recommendation sent from a personal email address can lead to a rescinded offer if it finds discrepancies. If your manager uses Gmail for everything, ask them to use their company account for this one.
Columbia MBA deadlines 2026-2027
Columbia offers two start dates: August and January. All deadlines fall at 12:00 p.m. (noon) Eastern Time, which is 5:00 p.m. GMT and 6:00 p.m. in Lagos in January.
| Round (August 2027 entry) | Deadline | Interview invites by | Final decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | 9 September 2026 (closed) | 2 November 2026 | 14 December 2026 |
| Round 2 | 5 January 2027 | 17 February 2027 | 24 March 2027 |
| Round 3 | 29 March 2027 | 30 April 2027 | 12 May 2027 |
Deadline
Apply by Round 2 on 5 January 2027 if you want priority for Columbia’s own funding. Columbia says priority institutional funding goes to applications completed by the Round 1 or Round 2 deadline.
Both January 2027 entry rounds have closed: 17 June 2026 and 13 August 2026. January 2028 entry dates were not on the deadlines page when I checked. An application you don’t finish by a deadline rolls into the next round of the same cycle.
Columbia Business School MBA essays and how to answer them
These are the 2026-27 prompts as reported by admissions consultants who track them. Check the wording in the application itself before you write, because Columbia’s own checklist page still showed last year’s Essay 2 when I checked.
Short answer (50 characters)
“What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal?” August applicants also answer how they plan to spend the summer after first year, and January applicants explain why they prefer the January term, each in 50 characters.
How to answer: name a function, an industry and, if you can, a place. Fifty characters fits something like “Healthcare strategy consultant, West Africa” (43 characters). That is an example only.
Essay 1: career goals (500 words)
The prompt notes that Columbia already knows your path from your resume and recommendation, then asks for your career goals over the next three to five years and your long-term dream job.
How to answer: spend about a third on the short-term goal, with a specific role and the type of firm. Explain the gap the MBA closes, using one or two Columbia resources by name. Then describe the dream job and show how the first role leads there. The committee is checking that your plan is realistic for someone with your background.
Sample opening, for illustration: “In five years I want to lead investments for an impact fund backing agricultural processors in East Africa. My route there starts with two years in a private equity team that already does deals in the region.”
Essay 2: making a team more collaborative (250 words)
Share a specific example of how you made a team more collaborative or inclusive, or built a stronger sense of community in an organisation.
How to answer: one story only. Set up the problem in two sentences, spend most of the words on what you did and why, and finish with a result someone could check. Two hundred and fifty words go fast, so drop the background.
Sample opening, for illustration: “Our Accra and Nairobi analysts had stopped sharing models because each office thought the other took credit.”
Essay 3: co-creating your Columbia experience
Columbia describes itself as a collaborative place where students have a sense of belonging, agency and partnership, then asks how you would co-create your best MBA experience there, with specifics. Consultants report the limit as 250 words; one source says 500. Use whatever the application shows.
How to answer: name the clubs, classes or New York links you will use, and say what you will add to them. Show you will give as much as you take. Vague praise of “the New York advantage” with no detail adds nothing.
Sample opening, for illustration: “On my first free Friday in New York I plan to be in a Bronx food co-op, testing whether the pricing model I built for market women in Ibadan works here.”
Optional essay (up to 500 words)
Use it only for real concerns: a low grade, a gap in employment, no recommendation from your current boss. Bullet points are acceptable. Don’t use it to add a fourth essay.
Columbia MBA interview format
Interviews are by invitation only, and you can’t request one. Columbia alumni conduct them, usually in your own region, so in many African and Asian cities you will meet a graduate who lives there. Interview invitations for Round 2 go out by 17 February 2027. Be ready to walk through your career and explain why you want Columbia and why now.
What the Columbia admissions committee looks for
- A clear career plan: the short answer and Essay 1 both ask about goals, so Columbia weighs them heavily.
- Evidence of teamwork: Essay 2 is entirely about how you work with others.
- Fit with Columbia specifically: Essay 3 asks how you will shape your time there, which needs real research.
- Academic readiness: test scores and transcripts, with a 3.6 average GPA in the latest class.
- Honesty: the checks on recommender emails and transcripts show how seriously Columbia takes accurate records.
Columbia Business School MBA tuition and cost 2026-27
International students pay the same tuition as US students. Poets&Quants collected Columbia’s published 2026-27 figures and living estimates:
| Cost item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $93,908 |
| Mandatory fees | $6,783 |
| Estimated living and other costs | $42,339 |
| First-year total (estimate) | $143,030 |
| Two-year total (estimate) | $286,060 |
The two-year figure doubles year one, and tuition normally rises, so plan for slightly more. Check Columbia’s own cost of attendance page before you prepare visa documents, because the I-20 uses the school’s figure.
Costs not covered
- Application stage: test fees, the $250 application fee and, if admitted, a deposit that Columbia says varies by round.
- Visa: the $350 SEVIS I-901 fee and the US visa application fee.
- Travel: flights to New York and home, plus recruiting and global study trips.
- Housing start-up: New York rent deposits and broker fees can be large.
- Dependants: a spouse or children raise both your costs and the funds you must prove for the visa.
Columbia MBA scholarships for international students
Columbia offers merit and need-based awards. Its funding page does not exclude international students from either, but check with the financial aid office for need-based eligibility.
- Merit fellowships (August entry): you are considered automatically through your application. Awards range from $25,000 a year to full tuition, with priority for Round 1 and Round 2 applicants. They renew in year two if you stay in good academic standing.
- Merit fellowships (January entry): $25,000 to $65,000 a year, in limited numbers.
- Named awards: the Meyer Feldberg Distinguished Fellowship (full tuition), the Ronald O. Perelman Family Scholarship (full tuition), the Robert F. Smith ’94 Scholarship and several R. C. Kopf Global Fellowships for students with strong international experience. Most named awards are matched after you enrol.
- Need-based aid: August applicants invited to interview complete an institutional application, the CSS Profile and income documents. Second-year need-based awards run from $25,000 to $50,000.
- Second Year Fellows: about 50 awards of $5,000 for continuing students with strong first-year results.
- Loans: Columbia’s financial aid site has a loans section and a list of international resources for home-country loans and fellowships. The pages I read did not name Prodigy, MPOWER or a no-cosigner Columbia loan, so ask the financial aid office what is available for your passport.
Outside awards can close the gap. Start with our list of US scholarships for international students, and use our recommendation letter guide when you brief referees.
Is the Columbia MBA STEM designated?
Yes. Columbia’s full-time and Executive MBA are STEM designated, along with its MS degrees in Financial Economics, Accounting and Fundamental Analysis, and Marketing Science. On an F-1 visa this lets you add a 24-month STEM extension to the standard 12 months of OPT, so you can work in the US for up to three years after graduating.
Columbia MBA salary and employment
| Measure (Class of 2025) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Received an offer within three months | 92% |
| Accepted an offer within three months | 90.2% |
| Median base salary | $175,000 |
| Median signing bonus | $30,000 (reported by 68.9% of hires) |
| Top industries | Financial services 35.4%, consulting 30.6%, technology 10.2%, real estate 3.8% |
| Largest employers | McKinsey (62), Boston Consulting Group (62), Bain (33), PwC (24), Deloitte (23), JPMorgan Chase (22), Amazon (21) |
About 17% of the class went into investment banking. The report does not separate results for international graduates.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Missing the noon cut-off: Columbia’s deadlines are at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time, not midnight.
- Waiting for Round 3: priority funding goes to Rounds 1 and 2, and international students also need time for the visa.
- Converting your GPA: Columbia asks for the GPA as it appears on your transcript.
- A recommender on a personal email: it can raise questions later.
- Vague goals: “consulting or finance” in the short answer tells the committee you haven’t decided.
- Recycled Essay 3: a “why our school” essay written for another school is easy to spot.
Who should apply to Columbia Business School
I would apply if you want finance, consulting or media careers in New York, have around five years of experience and can show a clear goal. The January intake suits you if you don’t need a summer internship, for example if you are sponsored or returning to a family business.
I would think harder if you want a small, close campus community, if you need a summer internship but are applying for January entry, or if the cost of New York would leave you without a funding plan.
How Columbia compares with peer MBA programmes
| School | U.S. News 2026 | GMAT Focus | Acceptance rate (fall 2025) | First-year cost 2026-27 | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Columbia Business School | No. 7 (tie) | 690 average | 25.7% | $143,030 | 5 Jan 2027 |
| MIT Sloan | No. 6 | 675 median | 18.8% | $144,325 | 12 Jan 2027 |
| NYU Stern | No. 7 (tie) | 682 average | 23.6% | $140,668 | 15 Jan 2027 |
| Dartmouth Tuck | No. 9 | 671 median | 28.3% | $135,331 | 5 Jan 2027 |
GMAT figures are from each school’s latest published class (Class of 2028 for MIT, Class of 2027 for the others). Acceptance rates and costs are from Poets&Quants. NYU Stern is the natural comparison if you are set on New York. For undergraduate study at the same university, see our Columbia University admission requirements for international students.
