The MIT Sloan MBA admission requirements for international students are the same as for US applicants: a bachelor’s degree (a three-year non-US degree is accepted), a GMAT or GRE score, a one-page resume, a 300-word cover letter, a 90-second video statement, one recommendation, two extra references and an organisational chart. MIT Sloan’s How to Apply page lists no English test requirement. The application fee is $250 and the interview is by invitation only, held virtually.
MIT Sloan is ranked No. 6 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools list, released in April 2026. The Class of 2028 has 450 students, 45% of them international, with a median GMAT Focus score of 675. Round 1 closed on 29 September 2026, so the deadline open to you now is Round 2 on 12 January 2027 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Expect about $144,000 for the first year once living costs are included. I checked the figures below on 29 October 2026.
MIT Sloan MBA ranking and key numbers
U.S. News placed MIT Sloan at No. 6 for full-time MBA programmes in its 2026 Best Business Schools edition, published on 7 April 2026. The table pulls the main numbers into one place before the detail.

MIT Sloan MBA acceptance rate and class profile
MIT Sloan does not print an acceptance rate in its class profile. Poets&Quants, which collects admissions data from schools, lists 18.8% for the class that entered in fall 2025, up from 14.1% a year earlier. Treat it as an estimate.
The Class of 2028 profile tells you more about who actually gets in:
- Size: 450 students, the same as the Class of 2027.
- International share: 45%, up three points on the year before, with 65 citizenships represented.
- Tests: median GMAT Focus 675, with the middle 80% between 645 and 715. GRE Quant for the middle 80% ran from 160 to 170.
- Grades: median undergraduate GPA of 3.74 for schools that use a 4.0 scale.
- Experience: five years of work on average. Consulting (37%) was the largest background, then tech (17%) and financial services (14%).
- Degrees: engineering 29%, business 25%, economics 15%, science or maths 9%, computer science 8%.
If you come from engineering or consulting, you will be in familiar company. If you don’t, your transcript and test score have to show you can handle the quantitative core.
MIT Sloan MBA requirements for international students
These are the parts of the application as MIT Sloan lists them for 2027 entry:
- Degree: a four-year US bachelor’s degree or a three-year non-US equivalent, completed by the time you enrol. There are no prerequisite courses.
- Coursework report: you list any grades you earned in calculus, communications, microeconomics, organisational behaviour, probability and statistics. Certifications such as CFA, CPA or ACCA and online courses like MITx MicroMasters can be added.
- Test: a valid GMAT (Focus or 10th Edition) or GRE score by the deadline. Self-reported scores are fine at application. The GRE code is 3791. The page mentions no test waiver and no Executive Assessment option.
- English test: the How to Apply page does not ask for TOEFL, IELTS or any other English test. Your video and interview do that job.
- Transcripts: scanned copies from every university you attended, uploaded as PDF. A certified English translation must accompany any transcript in another language. Digitally signed or encrypted files are rejected, so print and scan them. Sealed originals are only needed after admission.
- Resume: one page, Times New Roman size 10, Word or PDF, in reverse chronological order, focused on results.
- Employment history: up to three roles, including your compensation for each.
- Recommendation: one letter from a professional contact, ideally your manager. Family members are not accepted.
- References: two more professional contacts, different from the recommender, whom MIT Sloan may call.
- Organisational chart: your team structure with your role circled in red, your reporting line and any direct reports. Names can be removed.
- Fee: $250, non-refundable. Waivers are only listed for current Peace Corps members and US military or veterans.
The recommender answers six set questions. One of them asks for the most important piece of constructive feedback they have given you and how you responded. Brief your manager on that question early, because a vague answer reads badly.
MIT Sloan MBA deadlines 2026-2027
MIT Sloan runs two rounds for August 2027 entry. Applications are due by 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the deadline day, which in January is 8:00 p.m. GMT and 9:00 p.m. in Lagos.
| Round | Deadline (3:00 p.m. ET) | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | 29 September 2026 (closed) | Mid-December 2026 |
| Round 2 | 12 January 2027 | Early April 2027 |
Deadline
Round 2 is the last regular round for 2027 entry. There is no Round 3, so if you miss 12 January 2027 you wait for the next cycle.
Round 2 is also when dual-degree applicants to Harvard Kennedy School or MIT’s urban planning department must apply. Leaders for Global Operations (LGO) candidates use a separate LGO round.
MIT Sloan MBA essays: cover letter and video statement
MIT Sloan has no traditional essays. You write a cover letter and record a video, and invited candidates answer an extra short question before the interview.
Cover letter (300 words or fewer)
Address it to the Admissions Committee in normal business letter format. Use one or more professional examples to show that you meet the criteria MIT Sloan describes on its site. The 300-word limit excludes the address and salutation.
How to answer it: pick one or two stories where you changed an outcome, give numbers, and show how you worked with people. Skip the summary of your CV, which the committee already has. One clear example told properly beats four mentioned in passing.
Sample opening, for illustration: “Dear Members of the Admissions Committee, In March 2025 our clinic network in Kano was losing a third of its insulin stock to spoilage. I proposed a cheaper cold-chain route, persuaded two sceptical pharmacists to pilot it, and cut losses to 6% within a quarter.”
Video statement (90 seconds or less)
Tell the committee who you are, where you come from and what has shaped you. Record one unedited take, look at the camera, and use no music, subtitles or script.
How to answer it: build it around one or two personal details that don’t appear anywhere else in your file. Practise from bullet points until it sounds like conversation. Ninety seconds is roughly 200 spoken words, so cut hard.
Sample opening, for illustration: “Hi, I’m Amara. I grew up above my mother’s fabric stall in Onitsha, which is where I first learned that every price is a negotiation.”
Random video question
The application also generates a random open-ended question, such as an achievement you are proud of or how you handled a team member who wasn’t contributing. You can’t prepare the exact question. Prepare four or five stories instead and practise telling each in about a minute.
Pre-interview short answer
If you are invited to interview, you submit one more written answer. MIT Sloan sends the prompt and word limit with the invitation and does not publish them in advance.
MIT Sloan MBA interview format
The interview is required and by invitation only. It is held virtually and scheduled in Eastern Time, so check the time difference when you book. An invitation means you are in advanced consideration but is not an offer. MIT Sloan’s How to Apply page does not describe the interview questions. Applicant reports widely describe it as behavioural, built around past examples, so prepare situation, action and result stories from work.
What the MIT Sloan admissions committee looks for
Each part of the application asks for proof of something specific:
- Proven impact: the cover letter asks for professional examples and the resume rules ask for results over job titles.
- How you treat people: two of the recommender’s six questions are about your effect on others and how you interact with them.
- Coachability: the constructive feedback question tests whether you change after criticism.
- Quantitative readiness: the coursework report and test score show whether you can keep up in a demanding analytical core.
- Your real place in the organisation: the org chart stops inflated titles from doing the work.
MIT Sloan MBA tuition and cost of attendance 2026-27
MIT Sloan charges the same tuition to every student, wherever they come from. For 2026-27 the full-time MBA tuition is $91,892, which includes a $2,200 programme fee and required course packs. MIT Student Financial Services publishes the full graduate cost of attendance separately. Poets&Quants combined the published tuition, fees and living estimates as follows:
| Cost item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $89,692 |
| Mandatory fees | $2,620 |
| Estimated living and other costs | $52,013 |
| First-year total (estimate) | $144,325 |
| Two-year total (estimate) | $288,650 |
The two-year figure simply doubles year one. Tuition usually rises each year, so budget a little higher for year two.
Costs that are not covered
- Before you arrive: GMAT or GRE fees, the $250 application fee, the $350 SEVIS I-901 fee and the US visa application fee.
- Textbooks: course packs are included in tuition, textbooks are not.
- Flights: your trip to Boston and any trips home.
- Recruiting and treks: travel to interviews and optional study trips.
- Settling in: rent deposits, furniture and winter clothing for Boston.
- Family: any spouse or children cost extra and raise the funds you must show for your visa.
MIT Sloan MBA scholarships for international students
Admission at MIT Sloan is need-blind, so asking for money does not affect your decision. This is how funding works for international students:
- Fellowships: every incoming student is considered automatically for MIT Sloan fellowships and some awards from other MIT departments. There is no separate application, and the review happens after the admission decision. The financing page names no specific MBA fellowship and gives no amounts.
- LGO fellowships: Leaders for Global Operations students may receive fellowships funded by MIT’s industry partners.
- Teaching and research assistantships: open to international students, usually paid as salary plus a tuition contribution. You cannot work on campus in your first term.
- External awards: scholarships from your government, employer or a foundation must be reported to MIT through its fellowship intake form.
- Loans: with a US cosigner you have a range of options, including a federal unsubsidised loan. Without a cosigner, MIT says there are “a few options” but names no lender. Prodigy and MPOWER are not mentioned on the financing page, so ask the financial aid office directly.
If you need to stack outside funding, our list of US scholarships for international students is a good place to start.
Is the MIT Sloan MBA STEM designated?
Yes. MIT Sloan designated its full-time MBA, Sloan Fellows MBA and Executive MBA as STEM programmes in January 2020. For an F-1 student this means you can apply for the 24-month STEM extension after the standard 12 months of Optional Practical Training, giving up to three years of US work after graduation without an H-1B. Many international students weigh this heavily when choosing a school.
MIT Sloan MBA salary and employment
These figures come from MIT Sloan’s 2025-2026 MBA Employment Report for the Class of 2025.
| Measure (Class of 2025) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Graduates seeking jobs | 256 of 396 (64.6%) |
| Received an offer within three months | 91.0% |
| Accepted an offer within three months | 87.1% |
| Median base salary | $175,000 |
| Median signing bonus | $30,000 |
| Top industries | Consulting 32.3%, technology 23.3%, finance 20.6%, healthcare and biotech 8.1% |
| Largest employers | Boston Consulting Group (26), McKinsey (20), Amazon (12), Bain (12), Verizon (7), Strategy& (5) |
Only about two-thirds of the class was job hunting. The rest were sponsored, started companies or continued study, which is why the seeking figure is lower than you might expect. The report does not break out results for international graduates.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Writing an essay instead of a letter: the cover letter is a business letter with evidence, not a life story.
- Reading the video from notes: MIT Sloan forbids scripts, and it shows on camera.
- Uploading the wrong transcript file: encrypted or digitally signed PDFs are rejected, so print and scan them.
- Forgetting translations: a non-English transcript needs the original and a certified translation.
- Converting grades: report your GPA as your university gives it rather than converting it yourself, unless the form asks you to.
- Treating the time zone loosely: 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time is evening in West Africa and night in East Africa and Asia.
- Leaving funding to the end: without a US cosigner, loan options are limited, so start the conversation with MIT once admitted.
Who should apply to MIT Sloan
I would apply if you have about five years of work with clear, measurable results, a strong quantitative record, and a goal in consulting, technology, operations or entrepreneurship. The STEM designation makes it especially attractive if you want to work in the US for a few years after graduating.
I would think twice if you have less than two years of experience, if your test score is well below 645, or if you need a guaranteed large scholarship before you can commit. MIT Sloan does not publish fellowship amounts, so you can’t plan around one.
