University of Washington Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline

University of Washington Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline
The University of Washington admitted 41.7% of first-year applicants for fall 2025 but gives no aid to international undergraduates. Here are the $69,129 cost for 2026-27, English minimums, the essay, and the 15 November 2026 deadline.

University of Washington admission requirements for international students are short on paper: one Common App with a personal essay, a self-reported academic record (STARS), an English test score that meets UW’s minimum, and a $95 application fee. UW does not ask for recommendation letters, does not interview, and does not require the SAT or ACT from most applicants. For autumn 2027 entry there is one first-year deadline, 15 November 2026.

UW also says plainly that it does not give financial aid or scholarships to undergraduate international students, and the 2026-27 cost for a nonresident undergraduate in Seattle is $69,129 a year before health insurance. UW admitted 41.7% of first-year applicants for fall 2025, but the rate for out-of-state and international students is lower, and some majors are far harder to enter. Everything below was checked on UW’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

University of Washington ranking

In the U.S. News Best Global Universities 2026-27 edition, released in June 2026, UW placed No. 12 in the world and No. 3 among American public universities, according to UW News. UW also had six subjects in the global top 10. In the QS World University Rankings released the same month, UW was No. 92 in the world and No. 7 among US public universities.

I could not confirm UW’s place in the U.S. News 2027 National Universities list (released September 2026): the U.S. News profile does not load for us and UW has not published the figure on its news pages. Check usnews.com directly if that one number matters to you. For most international applicants the global ranking is the more useful signal anyway, because it reflects research strength across subjects.

University of Washington acceptance rate and class profile

UW’s Common Data Set for 2025-26 covers the class that started in autumn 2025. UW News confirmed the enrolled number in October 2025.

Measure (Seattle campus, autumn 2025)Figure
First-year applicants72,933
Admitted30,446
Acceptance rate41.7%
First-years enrolled7,129
Admitted high school GPA, middle 50%3.75 to 3.98 on a 4.0 scale (95 to 100 on a 100 scale)
International students on the Seattle campus (all levels)7,439
Total Seattle enrolment52,316

UW’s admissions office publishes three-year average admit rates by residency on its “By the numbers” page. It does not list a separate rate for international applicants, but international students are reviewed with the non-Washington group, and that is the number to plan around.

Three-year average admit rateWashington residentsNon-residents
All first-year applicants47%39%
Direct to College, engineering43%37%
Direct to Major, computer science and computer engineering30%2%

If you want computer science, plan around that 2%. UW gives most of its direct-to-major computing places to Washington residents. A strong international student can still be admitted to UW, but the chance of entering computer science straight from secondary school is very small.

UW also reports the average English scores of admitted international students: TOEFL 107 (old 120-point scale), IELTS 7.6 and Duolingo 139. Those are far above the minimums listed later in this guide, which tells you how competitive the international pool is. In autumn 2025 the number of international students on the Seattle campus fell by about 7% from the year before.

University of Washington tuition for international students (2026-27)

International undergraduates pay the nonresident rate. UW’s Office of Student Financial Aid publishes this nine-month (three-quarter) budget for 2026-27 for a nonresident undergraduate in Seattle:

Cost item (2026-27, nonresident, Seattle)Amount
Tuition and fees$45,789
Housing and food$18,858
Books and course supplies$900
Transportation$1,074
Miscellaneous personal costs$2,506
Total cost of attendance$69,129

For your visa paperwork, UW’s International Student Services uses a bigger figure. Its 2026-27 estimate covers four quarters, so it includes a summer, and adds the compulsory International Student Health Insurance Plan (ISHIP):

I-20 funding estimate (2026-27, four quarters)Amount
Tuition and fees$61,052
Health insurance (ISHIP)$2,148
Living expenses (housing, food, books, transport, personal)$31,120
Total you must show$94,320

Your proof of funds must cover one academic year, be in liquid form (bank statements, certificates of deposit, scholarships or government funding), be in English or come with an official translation, and be no more than 12 months old. UW does not accept property, stocks, retirement accounts, cryptocurrency or employment letters as proof.

University of Washington scholarships for international students

UW’s admissions scholarship page says the university does not provide financial aid or scholarships to undergraduate international students. That covers need-based aid and merit awards. The main first-year awards are closed to you:

  • Presidential Scholar ($10,000 a year, renewable for up to four years): Washington residents only.
  • Purple & Gold Scholarship: for US citizens, permanent residents, refugees and undocumented students from outside Washington. International students are not included.
  • Costco Scholarship ($10,000 a year for four years): requires Washington residency and financial need.
  • Army ROTC scholarships: require US citizenship.

Because UW gives no undergraduate aid to international students, there is no CSS Profile, no ISFAA and no UW aid form to file. The only paperwork about money is the proof of funds you send after admission for your I-20. If you need a scholarship to study in the US, apply to UW only alongside schools that do fund international students; our list of the best American scholarships for international students is a good place to start.

University of Washington admission requirements for international students, part by part

  1. Common App: UW accepts first-year applications only through the Common App. It opens on 15 August and closes on 15 November. International first-years can start only in autumn quarter; UW does not take winter or spring international first-year applications.
  2. Application fee: $95 for international applicants, non-refundable. UW says fee waivers are not available to international applicants.
  3. Personal essay: one Common App prompt, 250 to 650 words. UW has no preference among the prompts.
  4. Optional writing: a 250-word “challenges and circumstances” response and a 300-word “additional information” box.
  5. Major choice: a first-choice major and an optional second choice. The second choice is used in general review but not for direct-to-major placement.
  6. STARS self-reported academic record: required. Submit it after the Common App, using the same email address. You cannot change it once submitted.
  7. Transcripts: if your school follows a national curriculum outside the US (WAEC, KCSE, CBSE, the Baccalauréat and so on), upload a scanned unofficial transcript from grade 9 upwards, with official English translations of anything not in English. Official final transcripts are needed only if you enrol.
  8. English proficiency score: sent directly by the testing agency (details below).

UW tells applicants not to send recommendation letters, portfolios or links. It does not interview and does not track demonstrated interest, so campus visits and emails to admissions officers do not change your chances.

Testing policy

SAT and ACT scores are not required for most first-year applicants. They are required only from homeschooled students and from students whose school gives no letter or number grades. UW does not use submitted scores in its holistic review; the only place an SAT or ACT score helps is as an alternative route to meeting the English requirement.

English requirements

TestUW minimum (first-year)
TOEFL iBT taken before 21 January 202676
TOEFL iBT taken on or after 21 January 2026 (1 to 6 scale)4.0
IELTS Academic6.0
Duolingo English Test110
SAT or ACT routeSAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 580 or ACT English 22, plus a B average in grade 10 to 12 English courses taught in English

You must take the test by 31 December of the year you apply. UW accepts the TOEFL home edition and IELTS Indicator, but not TOEFL MyBest or superscored English tests, and it does not offer conditional admission. Only students whose primary and secondary education was in Australia, Canada (English-speaking provinces), the UK, Ireland, New Zealand or the US are exempt. Students from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, India and other English-medium systems outside that list still need a score.

University of Washington deadlines for autumn 2027

StepDate
Common App opens15 August 2026
Application deadline (application, fee, STARS)15 November 2026
Last date to sit the English test31 December 2026
Admission decisions1 to 15 March 2027
National reply date (your offer letter gives your exact deadline)1 May 2027

UW’s dates page lists the days and months without a year; the years above follow the current application cycle for autumn 2027 entry. UW has no Early Decision or Early Action round. Everyone applies by the same date and hears in March.

Deadline: 15 November 2026

That is just over two weeks away. If you have not booked an English test, book one now: you can sit it up to 31 December, but if you test after 15 November you must list UW as a score recipient when you register.

How to write the UW essays, with a sample opening

UW reads your personal essay with no recommendation letters and no interview beside it, so the essay is the only place a reader hears your voice. Treat it as your interview. A few things work well for this reader in particular:

  • Pick one story with a turning point: a problem you faced, what you did, and what changed in you. Readers remember one specific scene better than a list of achievements.
  • Explain your setting in a line: the reader in Seattle does not know your school, your exam system or your town. One clear sentence of context saves confusion.
  • Use the challenges box for facts: power cuts during exams, a school that offered no physics, a year out caring for a parent. Keep it short and factual, and save reflection for the main essay.
  • Link your story to your major: if you list engineering or nursing, the essay should show why that interest is real, especially for direct-to-college or capacity-limited majors.
  • Write it yourself: UW asks for standard, formal English and says all writing must be your own. Paste it in plain text, because formatting is stripped.

A sample opening, for illustration only: “The borehole pump in our compound failed in the second week of my final exams, and by Wednesday my younger brothers were carrying water in paint buckets before school.” From there, the essay should move quickly to what you did about it, such as teaching yourself to read the pump’s wiring diagram with a neighbour, and end with how that habit of fixing things led you to civil or mechanical engineering.

What happens after you apply to UW

  1. Link your STARS record: use the same email as your Common App so the two match. A record that does not link leaves your file incomplete.
  2. Send your English score: the official report must come from the testing agency by the 31 December testing date.
  3. Decision in March: UW releases decisions between 1 and 15 March 2027.
  4. Confirm and pay the deposit: your offer letter gives your confirmation deadline and the Enrollment Confirmation Deposit date; for most students this is around 1 May.
  5. Prove your funds: upload bank or sponsor documents covering the $94,320 ISS estimate so UW can issue your I-20.
  6. Visa interview: pay the SEVIS fee and book an F-1 visa interview at the US embassy or consulate in your country, then send your final official transcript before you enrol.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Expecting a scholarship later: UW does not fund international undergraduates. Do not accept an offer hoping aid will appear in second year.
  • Assuming English-medium schooling is enough: unless all your schooling was in one of the six listed countries, you need a test score.
  • Testing after 31 December: there is no conditional admission, so a late score means no review at all.
  • Sending recommendation letters: UW asks you not to. They add nothing and can slow processing.
  • Listing computer science with no backup: with a 2% non-resident direct-to-major rate, choose a second-choice major you would truly study.
  • Translating badly or not at all: transcripts not in English need official translations, and proof-of-funds papers must be in English too.

Costs aid will not cover

Since UW offers no aid to international undergraduates, every cost lands on your family or an outside sponsor. Beyond the $69,129 budget, plan for:

  • Health insurance: ISHIP, estimated at $2,148 for 2026-27.
  • Summer quarter: the I-20 estimate assumes four quarters, so budget for summer housing even if you do not take classes.
  • Visa and travel: the SEVIS fee, the visa application fee and flights to Seattle are outside UW’s budget.
  • Tuition increases: nonresident tuition is set each year, so assume the four-year total will be higher than four times today’s figure.
  • Test and application fees: the $95 application fee, the English test, and sending scores.

Majors, campus and city

UW’s Seattle campus is the largest of its three campuses and enrolled 52,316 students in autumn 2025. It sits on Portage and Union Bays in the north of the city, a few miles from downtown. The university is best known for computer science, engineering, medicine and public health, information science and the life sciences.

Admission works at three levels. Most students are admitted to the university and declare a major later. Some engineering applicants are admitted “direct to college,” and a small number are admitted “direct to major” in computer science and computer engineering. If you are not admitted directly, you can still apply to many majors after your first year, though popular majors have limited space. Seattle is an expensive city, and the housing figure in UW’s budget assumes a shared room.

UW graduate admissions for international students

Graduate admission runs through each department, which sets its own deadline and funding. The UW Graduate School sets the English floor for everyone:

  • Minimum: TOEFL iBT 4.0 (80 for tests before 21 January 2026), IELTS Academic 6.5, or Duolingo 115.
  • Recommended: TOEFL 4.5 (92), IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo 130. Below these, you may have to take English courses after admission.
  • Exemption: a degree from an accredited English-medium institution, studied on or near campus, can waive the test.
  • Funding: PhD funding usually comes through assistantships from the department, so ask each programme directly.

UW compared with other big public universities

Texas A&M University51.7% (48.5% for international applicants)Some scholarships; 237 nonresident undergraduates got institutional aidOptional1 Dec 2026

Virginia TechAbout 55%College and departmental scholarships onlyOptional15 Nov 2026 (EA) or 15 Jan 2027

Of these four, UW is the most selective and the only one that rules out every form of undergraduate aid for international students. Minnesota is the clearest option if you want a merit award from a large public research university.

Who should apply to UW

Apply if your family or sponsor can cover about $70,000 a year for four years without a scholarship, your grades are near the top of your class, and you want a large research university in a major tech city. UW is a strong choice for life sciences, public health, information science and engineering, and admission does not depend on SAT scores, letters or interviews.

Look elsewhere if you need any financial aid, if computer science is the only major you would accept, or if you cannot sit an English test by 31 December. I would put UW on a list only after adding universities that do fund international students. Our page on US scholarships with upcoming deadlines lists several.
