Smith College admission requirements for international students are simple to list: the Common App or Coalition Application (no fee), your transcript and Secondary School Report, a counselor recommendation, two teacher evaluations, a midyear report and an English test unless you are exempt. SAT and ACT scores have been optional at Smith since 2009. Smith is a women’s college at the undergraduate level, in Northampton, Massachusetts.
What sets Smith apart for international families is money. Smith meets full documented need for admitted students who apply for aid on time, puts no loans in its packages, and since fall 2026 guarantees at least free tuition to families earning up to $150,000 with assets under $200,000, international students included. It admitted 22% of applicants for fall 2025, and the Early Decision I deadline for fall 2027 entry is 15 November 2026. I checked the figures below on Smith’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Smith College ranking
Smith is tied #22 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. News 2027 edition, released on 22 September 2026, as reported by the Boston Globe. In the 2026 edition it was tied #13, so it slipped this year. The ranking change says nothing about Smith’s aid, which improved over the same period.
Smith College acceptance rate and class profile
Smith’s admission statistics page gives these figures for the Class of 2029, the students who started in fall 2025.
| Measure (Class of 2029, fall 2025) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Applications | 8,102 |
| Admitted | 1,816 |
| Acceptance rate | 22% |
| Class size | 703 |
| International students | 12% of the class |
| Countries represented (by citizenship) | 38 |
| Most represented countries | China, Canada, Nigeria, Rwanda, Hong Kong and India |
Smith does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants, and its statistics page gives no test score ranges. Two African countries, Nigeria and Rwanda, are among the six most represented countries in the class, which tells you Smith admits and funds students from the continent in real numbers. Across the college, students come from 67 countries.
Smith College tuition for international students (2026-27)
These are Smith’s 2026-27 charges for a student in a standard residence hall, before aid. Smith lists the items but not a total, so the totals are my sums.
| Cost item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $70,460 |
| Food and housing | $24,520 |
| Student activities fee | $308 |
| Health insurance (only domestic students may waive it) | $4,030 |
| Total billed | $99,318 |
| Books and supplies | $800 |
| Transportation (international average) | $1,000 |
| Personal expenses | $1,910 |
| Estimated total cost of attendance | $103,028 |
International students carry Smith’s health insurance, and Smith gives every aided international student a health grant that covers it.
Smith scholarships for international students: how aid works
Smith combines need-based aid with a tuition pledge and a few merit awards.
- Full need met: Smith meets the full documented need of admitted students who apply for aid by the published deadlines.
- Need-aware for internationals: Smith does not describe international admission as need-blind, and its international aid page calls the aid pool highly competitive. Plan on your aid request being part of the decision.
- No loans: Smith has replaced loans in its need-based packages with grants.
- Next 150 Pledge: from 2026-27, a family with income up to $150,000 and assets under $200,000 receives grant aid at least equal to tuition. Smith says this applies to domestic and international undergraduates, needs no separate application, and does not reduce other need-based aid, so poorer families can still get housing and food covered.
- Health grant: aided international students get a grant for Smith’s health insurance.
- Summer funding: every student can get funding for at least one summer internship or research project.
- Apply on time or never: an international student who does not apply for aid by the deadline before admission can never receive Smith aid.
Smith says 61% of students received a Smith need-based grant in 2024-25, and the average Smith grant this year is over $63,000.
Smith merit scholarships
Smith offers a limited number of merit scholarships. Every admitted applicant is considered automatically, awards are made only at admission, and you keep them by making satisfactory academic progress. Merit money counts toward your need: Smith’s own example is a $22,500 scholarship for a student with $15,000 of need, who then gets no need-based grant. Smith does not publish the range of merit amounts.
How to apply for Smith financial aid as an international student
- Complete the CSS Profile: it opens on 1 October. Smith’s CSS code is 3762. If your parents are separated or divorced, the noncustodial parent completes a separate CSS Profile too.
- Send the parent tax return: a signed, translated parent tax return for the year the Profile asks about. Families who do not file taxes send the International Parent Non-Filer Form with a translated income statement from each employer.
- Upload through IDOC: documents go to the College Board’s IDOC service, not to Smith directly.
- Meet the aid deadline: Smith’s international aid page lists deadlines of 15 November, 6 January, 25 January and 11 March for the latest posted cycle. For fall 2027 that means 15 November 2026, 6 January 2027 and 25 January 2027 (based on this year’s dates; confirm on the official page when the call opens). Submit with your admission round.
Smith does not use the ISFAA. Questions go to Student Financial Services at sfs@smith.edu.
Smith admission requirements for international students: the application
| Part | What Smith asks for |
|---|---|
| Application | Common App or Coalition Application; no fee |
| School documents | Secondary School Report with official transcript; midyear report; final transcript |
| Recommendations | Counselor recommendation and two teacher evaluations |
| Early Decision Agreement | ED applicants only, due with the application |
| SAT or ACT | Optional |
| English proficiency | TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo unless exempt |
| Interview | Optional, with an alumna volunteer; request it in the applicant portal after you apply |
| Arts supplement | Optional, for music, visual art or dance, through SlideRoom between 1 August and 1 February |
Testing policy
Smith has been test-optional since 2009 and still is. Send a score only if it strengthens your file. Smith publishes no score ranges on its statistics page, so judge against your own school’s results and the other colleges on your list.
English requirements
Smith accepts TOEFL, IELTS, PTE and the Duolingo English Test. It does not publish a minimum score. You are exempt if any of these is true:
- English is your first language.
- English was the main language of instruction for your whole secondary education.
- You studied for at least two years at a US school taught in English.
- You are taking or have finished the IB Diploma or an A Level curriculum taught in English.
Smith decides the requirement by citizenship, not by where your school is. A West African student in a WAEC school taught in English for all of secondary school should qualify for the second exemption, but confirm in your applicant portal.
Smith deadlines for fall 2027 entry
| Round | Application deadline | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I (binding) | 15 November 2026 | Mid-December 2026 |
| Early Decision II (binding) | 5 January 2027 | Late January 2027 |
| Regular Decision | 15 January 2027 | Late March 2027 |
Regular Decision applicants send the midyear report by 15 February 2027. Early Decision applicants who are deferred are reconsidered with Regular Decision in the spring.
Aid deadline
If you are an international applicant, missing the aid deadline before admission means you can never receive Smith aid, even if your family’s situation changes later.
How to write the Smith supplemental essay
Smith’s supplement has been short. In 2025-26 it asked one question of about 250 words about Smith’s house system: what you would bring to the people you live with and what you hope they would share with you. Check the 2026-27 application for the current wording before you write.
If you get that prompt, write about living with other people, because that is the question. Pick one real habit or skill you bring to a shared space (cooking for a crowd, settling arguments, teaching younger siblings, keeping a prayer schedule while others sleep) and one thing you want to learn from housemates whose lives differ from yours. Keep it concrete and warm.
A sample opening, for illustration only:
“In a two-bedroom flat with eight people, I learned that whoever wakes first sets the mood for the whole day. For most of secondary school, that person was me.”
The rest of the essay would show what she did with those early mornings and what she hopes to find in a Smith house.
What happens after you apply
- Applicant status portal: check for missing documents and request an alumna interview if you want one.
- Aid file: finish the CSS Profile and IDOC uploads by your deadline.
- Midyear report: your counselor sends it as soon as grades are ready (15 February for Regular Decision).
- Decision: mid-December for ED I, late January for ED II, late March for Regular Decision, with aid reviewed for admitted students.
- Commit and visa: once you enrol, Smith issues the I-20 for your F-1 student visa interview.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Thinking Smith is out of reach on price: the $103,028 sticker price matters far less than the Next 150 Pledge and full-need aid if your family income is modest.
- Missing the noncustodial parent Profile: if your parents live apart, Smith expects both.
- Sending untranslated tax papers: every document must be translated and signed.
- Not reporting outside scholarships: outside aid first replaces work-study, then can cover health insurance or a computer, then reduces your Smith grant.
- Taking an English test you do not need: check the exemptions first; many students from English-medium schools qualify.
- Planning on off-campus work: international students can only hold on-campus jobs.
Costs that aid does not cover
- English test fees and the CSS Profile fee.
- Visa, SEVIS and passport fees, and your first flight.
- Winter clothing for Massachusetts.
- Personal spending beyond the $1,910 a year that Smith budgets for personal expenses.
Smith graduate admissions for international students
Smith also has graduate programmes, which admit men and women, and it offers doctoral study through the Five College Consortium. The best-known is the Smith School for Social Work, which publishes its own 2026-27 costs for its MSW and PhD. Graduate applicants apply to each programme directly and follow that programme’s deadlines and English rules. The Next 150 Pledge does not apply to graduate students.
Majors and campus life at Smith
Smith has more than 2,500 undergraduates and an 8:1 student-faculty ratio in most years, with 57 academic departments and programmes taught by 313 professors. Through the Five College Consortium, Smith students can take courses at Amherst College, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire and the University of Massachusetts, and borrow from their libraries. Students live in houses rather than dorm blocks, which is why the essay asks about neighbours. Northampton is a small town in western Massachusetts.
Smith compared with similar liberal arts colleges
| College | International aid policy | Testing | Early round (fall 2027) | Regular deadline | 2026-27 tuition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smith | Full need met; tuition-free under $150,000 income (international included) | Optional | ED I 15 Nov 2026; ED II 5 Jan 2027 | 15 Jan 2027 | $70,460 |
| Vassar | Need-aware; full need met | Optional | ED I 15 Nov 2026; ED II 1 Jan 2027 | 1 Jan 2027 | $76,140 |
| Hamilton | Need-aware; full need met | Optional | ED I 15 Nov 2026; ED II 4 Jan 2027 | 4 Jan 2027 | $75,210 with fees |
| Davidson | Need-aware; 100% of need met | Optional | ED I 15 Nov 2026; ED II 4 Jan 2027 | 11 Jan 2027 | $73,090 |
Smith has the lowest tuition of the four and the only income-based tuition guarantee that covers international families. Two other women’s colleges are worth a look too: our Mount Holyoke College and Wellesley College guides.
Who should apply to Smith
Apply if you want a small liberal arts college with access to a big university’s courses, are comfortable at a women’s college, and come from a family that cannot pay much. Smith’s aid rules are among the clearest for international students: full need, no loans, and a tuition guarantee for incomes up to $150,000. The large Nigerian and Rwandan presence also means you will not be the only African student on campus.
It is a weaker fit if you want a coeducational classroom, a big city, or a guaranteed merit award. I would pair Smith with other full-need colleges; our list of the best American scholarships for international students and our guide to Amherst College financial aid are good next steps.
