Stanford University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Stanford University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Stanford is need-aware for international students but meets full need for those it admits. Here are the 2026-27 costs ($97,545), the 4% acceptance rate, SAT rules, essays and fall 2027 deadlines (1 November 2026 REA, 5 January 2027 RD).

Stanford University admission requirements for international students match those for US applicants: the Common Application, Stanford’s short questions and three short essays, SAT or ACT scores, a school report with a counsellor letter, two teacher letters, a midyear transcript and a $100 fee or a waiver. Stanford does not require an English test. The big difference is money. Stanford is need-aware for international students, so asking for aid is a factor in the decision, but it meets the full demonstrated need of every international student it admits.

For fall 2027 entry, the Restrictive Early Action deadline is 1 November 2026 and the Regular Decision deadline is 5 January 2027. Stanford admits roughly 4% of applicants, and the 2026-27 cost of attendance is $97,545 before travel. Every figure below was checked on Stanford’s admission and financial aid pages on 29 October 2026.

Stanford admission requirements for international students: key facts

  1. Application: Common Application with the Stanford Questions. You can submit at most three Stanford undergraduate applications in total, transfer included.
  2. Fee: $100, non-refundable. The Common App fee waiver is open to US and non-US applicants.
  3. Tests: SAT or ACT required, self-reported, with superscoring. No minimum score.
  4. English test: not required, though fluency in English is expected. You may self-report a score.
  5. Academic record: no required curriculum and no GPA conversion. IB students send predicted marks; British-system students send GCSE results and predicted A-Levels.
  6. Aid policy: need-aware for international citizens; full demonstrated need met for those admitted.
  7. Aid form: CSS Profile (code 4704), or the free ISAFA if you cannot pay the CSS fee or your country cannot process College Board payments.
  8. Apply for aid now or never: international students who do not request aid when applying cannot apply for it later in their four years.
  9. Merit scholarships: none, apart from a limited number of athletic scholarships.

Stanford ranking

Stanford is ranked #5 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition, tied with Caltech. MIT was first, Princeton second, Harvard third and Yale fourth in the same edition, released on 22 September 2026.

Stanford is also one of the best-known names in computer science and engineering. In the U.S. News 2027 undergraduate computer science list it ties for first place with MIT and Carnegie Mellon.

Stanford acceptance rate and class profile

Stanford does not publish an admit rate on its admissions site. CollegeData, which licenses figures from Peterson’s, reports 2024-25 data showing 2,302 students admitted from 60,646 applicants, an acceptance rate of about 3.8%. Stanford does not publish a separate rate for international applicants.

The Class of 2029 was the only recent class for which tests were optional, so its score ranges come from students who chose to send scores. Expect a similar or slightly higher range now that testing is required.

Stanford tuition for international students in 2026-27

Stanford kept tuition flat for 2026-27. International students pay the same price as US students, and Stanford assumes they buy Cardinal Care, the student health plan, which is already built into their budget.

Tuition$67,731
Housing and food$22,944

Stanford scholarships for international students: how aid works

Stanford’s aid is scholarship money you never repay, based only on need. Stanford does not expect students to take loans. Once you are admitted, your nationality does not change how much need-based aid you receive.

  • Parents earning under $150,000 with typical assets pay no tuition.
  • Parents earning under $100,000 with typical assets pay no tuition, housing or food.
  • Home equity is no longer counted for undergraduate aid.
  • For families earning under $75,000, Stanford reports an average scholarship of $96,555 and an average net cost of $4,414.
  • Students are expected to contribute from summer and term-time earnings.

The difficult part is admission. Because Stanford is need-aware for international students, a large aid request can reduce your chances when the aid budget is stretched. Do not leave aid off your application to look stronger if you need it: Stanford will not let you apply later, and you would have no way to pay. If you want universities where aid has no effect on admission, compare Stanford with the need-blind options in our best American scholarships for international students list.

Testing policy for fall 2027

Stanford requires the SAT or ACT. Report your highest scores on the application; send official reports only if you are admitted and enrol. Stanford superscores both tests, and the ACT Science and Writing sections are optional. English tests cannot replace the SAT or ACT.

TestLast sitting for REALast sitting for RD

If you have taken any AP exam, you must report every AP score, including cancelled ones. Scores from the last five years are recommended.

English requirements

Stanford requires no TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score and publishes no minimum. It does expect you to be fluent, and your essays, letters and interview will show your level. If your schooling was not in English, a strong self-reported score can reassure readers, but it is optional.

Application parts and Stanford supplemental essays

  1. Common Application with your personal essay and activities.
  2. Stanford Questions: five short questions and three short essays.
  3. School Report and counsellor letter. Without a counsellor, a principal or teacher may do this.
  4. Two teacher letters from academic subjects, translated into English by a teacher or school official if needed. You may not translate them yourself.
  5. Official transcripts or results sent by your school, plus a midyear transcript by 15 February 2027.
  6. SAT or ACT scores, self-reported.
  7. Optional arts portfolio, which moves your deadline earlier.
  8. Optional alumni interview, if one is available where you live.

The five short questions (up to 50 words each) ask about the most significant challenge society faces today, how you spent your last two summers, a historical moment you wish you had witnessed, one activity, job or family responsibility, and five things that are important to you.

The three short essays (100 to 250 words each) ask you to describe an idea or experience that makes you excited about learning, to write a note to your future roommate, and to explain what aspects of your experiences, interests and character would let you make a distinctive contribution at Stanford.

How to write the Stanford supplemental essays

  • Intellectual vitality essay: follow one idea from first contact to the questions it raised. Show the reader what you did next, such as a book, an experiment or a conversation with a teacher.
  • Roommate essay: write as if to a real person. Daily habits, the food you will bring, how you study and what you are bad at all work.
  • Contribution essay: choose one part of your background and say what it will add to a dorm or a class. Keep the focus on actions.
  • Fifty-word answers: summers spent working, caring for family or preparing for exams are fine. Readers want the truth about your time.
  • Five things list: mix the serious and the small. A list of five abstract values tells the reader almost nothing.

A roommate-essay opening, written for illustration only:

“Dear future roommate, I wake at 5:30 because my family’s generator went off at 5:30 for twelve years, and I will try very hard not to wake you.”

The line gives a habit, a reason and a bit of humour at once. A good roommate essay keeps that tone to the end.

Restrictive Early Action is non-binding, but you cannot apply early to other private US colleges or to any binding plan. You may apply early to public universities with non-binding plans, non-binding rolling programmes, colleges outside the US with non-binding decisions and military academies. If Stanford refuses or defers you, you may still apply Early Decision II elsewhere.

Early deadline

Stanford’s Restrictive Early Action deadline is 1 November 2026, and the last SAT that counts for it is the October sitting. If your scores or documents are not ready, use the 5 January 2027 Regular Decision deadline.

What happens after you apply

  1. Missing documents notice: mid-November for REA and mid-February for RD. Fix gaps quickly, although Stanford may decide with some items missing.
  2. Interview: if an alumni volunteer is available in your area, you may be invited to a one-to-one interview of about 40 minutes in a public place or by video.
  3. REA outcome: admitted, deferred to RD or not admitted, in mid-December. A refusal is final for the year. Stanford defers only a small share.
  4. RD outcome: early April, with aid details for those who filed on time.
  5. Reply: by 1 May 2027.
  6. Official scores and final transcript: sent after you enrol. Stanford may withdraw an offer if self-reported scores do not match.
  7. Visa: Stanford sends the I-20 for your F-1 visa. Check current US visa rules for your nationality and book the embassy interview early.

Majors and academic strengths

Stanford undergraduates choose majors across its schools of humanities and sciences, engineering, and sustainability, and most declare by the end of their second year. Computer science is the largest major, and Stanford is also strong in engineering, economics, biology, symbolic systems and the earth sciences. The academic year runs on quarters, and international students can start only in the autumn quarter.

Silicon Valley start-ups, research labs and the medical school sit on or beside the campus, so undergraduates have unusual access to research and internships.

Campus and city

Stanford’s campus is in the San Francisco Bay Area, next to Palo Alto and about an hour south of San Francisco by train. Almost all undergraduates live on campus, which is why the roommate essay exists. The weather is mild and dry for most of the year, but the area is one of the most expensive in the US, so a student budget for off-campus spending needs care.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Not requesting aid at the start and hoping to ask later. Stanford does not allow it for international students.
  • Missing the October SAT or September ACT if applying REA.
  • Translating your own transcript or teacher letters. Stanford requires a teacher or school official to do it.
  • Applying early to another private college alongside Stanford REA.
  • Forgetting to self-report AP scores, including cancelled ones.
  • Writing the roommate essay as a CV.
  • Paying for the CSS Profile when the free ISAFA is available to you.

Costs aid doesn’t cover

  • SAT or ACT fees and travel to a test centre.
  • The CSS Profile fee if you use it instead of the ISAFA.
  • The US visa fee ($185) and SEVIS I-901 fee ($350).
  • Your expected student contribution from summer and term-time work.
  • Spending in an expensive region beyond the personal allowance of $3,405.
  • Flights beyond the travel amount Stanford sets for your home location; check your award letter.

Graduate admissions at Stanford

Graduate admission at Stanford is handled by each department and professional school through Graduate Admissions, with deadlines mostly between November and January. PhD programmes, the Graduate School of Business, the Law School and the School of Medicine each set their own tests, English minimums and funding rules. Funding for research degrees is decided by the department, so check the programme page before you apply.

Stanford is the only university in this table that weighs an international student’s aid request. If your strength is science and engineering in a much smaller setting, our Caltech admission guide covers the university Stanford tied with in the rankings.

Who should apply to Stanford

Apply if you have top grades, a strong SAT or ACT score and a record of building or exploring things on your own, especially in technology, science or entrepreneurship. Stanford suits students who want a large research university with a relaxed campus feel.

If you need a large aid package, I would still apply, but pair Stanford with several need-blind universities such as MIT, Harvard, Princeton and Yale, where your request cannot count against you.

FAQs on Stanford admission for international students

What is the Stanford acceptance rate for international students?

Stanford does not publish one. The overall rate is about 4% (2,302 of 60,646 applicants in 2024-25 data), and need-aware review makes it harder for aid applicants.
