Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) admission requirements for international students are short on paper: the Common or Coalition Application essay, a new 250-word answer on what you want to study and why, a counsellor recommendation and one teacher evaluation, your transcripts with certified translations, and an English test if English is not your first language. SAT and ACT scores are optional, and you can use IB, A-level or national exam results instead. WashU is need-aware for international students but meets 100% of demonstrated need for every undergraduate it admits, so the aid question has to be answered on the day you apply.
WashU admitted 3,968 of 33,283 first-year applicants for fall 2025, an acceptance rate of about 11.9%, and it ranks No. 16 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition. For fall 2027 entry there are four rounds: Early Action and Early Decision I close on 2 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision close on 4 January 2027. Every figure here was checked on WashU’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
WashU ranking and headline numbers
In the U.S. News 2027 Best Colleges edition, published in September 2026, WashU is No. 16 among National Universities, up from No. 20 in the 2026 edition. It shares that spot with Rice, Vanderbilt and Brown.
| Measure | WashU |
|---|---|
| U.S. News National Universities (2027 edition) | No. 16 |
| U.S. News National Universities (2026 edition) | No. 20 |
| Degree-seeking undergraduates (fall 2025) | 7,870 |
| Cost of attendance 2026-27 | $102,260 before health insurance |
| International aid | Need-aware, meets 100% of demonstrated need |
WashU acceptance rate and class profile
These figures come from WashU’s Common Data Set 2025-2026, which describes students who started in fall 2025.
| Measure (fall 2025) | Figure |
|---|---|
| First-year applicants | 33,283 |
| Admitted | 3,968 |
| Acceptance rate | about 11.9% |
| Enrolled first-years | 1,961 |
| Early Decision applicants | 4,934 |
| Early Decision admits | 1,333 (about 27%) |
| Enrolled students who sent SAT scores | 32% |
| SAT middle 50% (of those who sent scores) | 1500 to 1550 |
| ACT middle 50% (of those who sent scores) | 33 to 35 |
WashU says about 60% of the class is admitted through an Early Decision round, and the Early Decision admit rate is more than double the overall rate. For an international student who needs aid, that creates a dilemma covered in the aid section below.
WashU does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international students, and its Common Data Set does not split admissions by citizenship. Treat any international rate you see elsewhere as an estimate.
WashU tuition for international students in 2026-27
International and US students pay the same charges. The official 2026-27 undergraduate budget is:
| Item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $71,310 |
| Student activity fee | $712 |
| Student health and wellness fee | $700 |
| Housing and food (modern double room, Platinum meal plan) | $24,272 |
| Total university charges | $96,994 |
| Books and supplies | $1,412 |
| Travel (four round trips, estimated) | $1,050 |
| Personal expenses | $2,804 |
| Total cost of attendance | $102,260 |
Health insurance is extra. Full-time students must hold the WashU Student Health Insurance Plan or prove other adequate coverage by 5 September. The aid office does not list the premium on its cost page. Tuition rose by $3,070 this year, so students starting in fall 2027 should expect higher 2027-28 figures.
The travel line assumes domestic trips. If you fly home from Africa, Asia or South America, your real travel cost will be higher.
WashU scholarships for international students
WashU offers two kinds of money to international students, and both have to be requested at the right time.
Need-based aid
- Policy: WashU is need-aware for international applicants, which means your aid request can be a factor in the admission decision.
- Full need: WashU states that it meets 100% of demonstrated need for all admitted undergraduates, international students included.
- One chance only: you must say on your application that you are applying for need-based aid. You cannot apply after the decision or at any point during your four years.
- Form: the CSS Profile (WashU code 6929). The FAFSA is only for US citizens and permanent residents.
- If you are not applying for aid: you must still submit the International Financial Information form, or your application stays incomplete.
WashU’s Common Data Set shows how small the funded group is: 30 nonresident undergraduates received institutional aid, averaging $71,003 each. That average shows WashU funds generously once it admits you, but the number of places is very limited.
Merit scholarships
| Scholarship | Value | How you are considered |
|---|---|---|
| Danforth Scholars Program | Full-tuition and half-tuition awards | Separate 250-word answer in the Pathway portal |
| Annika Rodriguez Scholars Program | Full-tuition and partial-tuition awards | Separate 250-word answer in the Pathway portal |
| John B. Ervin Scholars Program | Full-tuition and partial-tuition awards | US citizens, permanent residents and DACA or undocumented students only |
| Howard Nemerov Writing Scholars | Up to 10 awards of $3,000 | Writing portfolio in the Pathway portal |
| Ampersand, Conway/Proetz, Fitzgibbon, Olin Distinguished Scholars, Langsdorf | Set by each school | Automatic from your admission application (portfolio needed for art and architecture awards) |
The priority deadline for the Signature Scholar Programs is 16 December 2026, and you must submit your main application before you can open the Pathway. WashU’s page does not state whether international students can hold the Danforth or Rodriguez awards; the Ervin programme is the only one that excludes them in writing. Ask the Office of Scholar Programs before you count on one.
Decide on aid before you submit
WashU will not consider a need-based aid request made after you apply. If you will need any help to pay about $102,000 a year, tick the aid box and file the CSS Profile with your application.
For other US universities that fund students from abroad, see our best American scholarships for international students, and compare with Duke and Amherst.
WashU admission requirements for international students: the application parts
- Application: Common Application or Coalition Application, opening 1 August, with the main personal essay.
- Short answer: a required 250-word response: “Please tell us what you are interested in studying at college and why.”
- School documents: official transcripts (originals or certified copies), a description of the grading system, exam results and school-leaving certificates, all with certified English translations. Transcripts must show subjects by year, course length and grades.
- Recommendations: one counsellor recommendation and one teacher evaluation.
- English test: TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo if English is not your first language.
- Financial forms: the CSS Profile if applying for aid, or the International Financial Information form if not.
- Portfolio: required for the College of Art and strongly encouraged for Architecture, through SlideRoom.
- Optional: a 90-second video, Schoolhouse.world certifications and SAT or ACT scores.
- Fee: $75, waived for every financial aid applicant.
WashU expects at least 12 years of primary and secondary schooling. If your system has fewer, explain it through your counsellor. It recommends four years each of English and maths (calculus for architecture, business and engineering), three to four years of lab science, and chemistry plus physics for engineering or pre-medicine.
WashU now counts demonstrated interest. Virtual information sessions, Bear Chats with current students and the ZeeMee community are free ways to show it from abroad.
Testing policy: test-optional, with alternatives
SAT and ACT scores are optional, and you are not penalised for leaving them out. Applicants from outside the US can instead show academic strength through national exams, predicted or final IB Diploma or A-level results, or three AP or three IB higher-level scores. If you are applying for a STEM major in Arts & Sciences, Engineering or Olin Business, one of those AP or IB HL scores must be in maths. If you do send SAT or ACT scores, WashU uses your highest section scores.
English requirements
| Test | Score WashU’s most competitive applicants share |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026) | 100 |
| TOEFL iBT (taken on or after 21 January 2026) | 5.0 |
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 |
| Duolingo English Test | 130 |
WashU describes these as the scores its most competitive applicants share. You may be exempt if you completed three or more years in an English-medium programme with strong grades, though mostly online schools usually do not count. From fall 2027, SAT and ACT scores no longer replace an English test.
WashU deadlines for fall 2027 entry
| Round | Apply by | Aid documents by | Decision | Reply by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early Action (non-binding, new) | 2 November 2026 | 17 November 2026 | 23 December 2026 | 1 May 2027 |
| Early Decision I (binding) | 2 November 2026 | 17 November 2026 | 11 December 2026 | 4 January 2027 |
| Early Decision II (binding) | 4 January 2027 | 11 January 2027 | 12 February 2027 | 1 March 2027 |
| Regular Decision | 4 January 2027 | 1 February 2027 | 1 April 2027 | 1 May 2027 |
The Signature Scholar priority deadline is 16 December 2026 for every round. Counsellor and teacher materials are due 9 November 2026 for Early Decision I and 11 January 2027 for Regular Decision. WashU’s page lists dates without years; the years above follow the fall 2027 cycle it names, and the decision and reply dates should be confirmed on the official deadlines page.
Aid applicants face a choice here. Early Decision has a much higher admit rate, but it is binding. Because WashU meets full demonstrated need, an Early Decision admit will receive an aid offer based on your CSS Profile. If you are confident your documents show your family’s finances accurately, ED can work. If you need to compare offers, Early Action is the safer new option.
How to write the WashU supplemental essay
WashU removed its optional writing supplement for fall 2027, so the 250-word “what and why” answer carries more weight. Readers want to see where your interest came from, what you have already done about it, and how WashU’s structure helps you go further. WashU lets students combine majors and minors across its schools, so name a pairing if you have one.
A simple structure works: one specific moment that started the interest, two or three sentences on what you did next, then one or two WashU details (a course, a lab, a programme) and what you want to do with them.
Sample opening, for illustration only:
“In my second year of secondary school, our town’s only paediatric ward closed for three months because the generator failed. I spent that term helping my aunt, a nurse, run a clinic out of our church hall, and I started asking why the cheapest fix had been ignored for so long.”
That opening can lead into public health, engineering or economics. Pick the direction your record supports.
What happens after you apply
- Portal: you receive WashU portal access; check it for missing documents.
- Aid review: aid applicants send the CSS Profile and any requested documents by the aid deadline for their round.
- Scholar finalists: Signature Scholar finalists are told by the end of February and must join virtual events, including an interview in early March.
- Decision: you are admitted, denied or deferred. Deferred early applicants may be reconsidered later.
- Enrolment: accept by your reply date and pay the deposit.
- Proof of funds: submit the Affidavit of Financial Support and certified English bank statements covering first-year costs, with comparable funds for later years. Aid awards are subtracted from the amount you must show.
- Visa: WashU issues the I-20 or DS-2019 only after admission and proof of funds. Complete immunisations and the health history form before arrival.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Not ticking the aid box, then discovering that WashU will never consider an aid request later.
- Applying Early Decision without understanding that it is binding.
- Treating the 250-word answer as a summary of your CV.
- Missing the 16 December scholarship priority date because the main application went in during January.
- Sending transcripts without a grading scale or certified translation.
- Assuming an SAT score covers English proficiency; from fall 2027 it does not.
- Ignoring demonstrated interest when free virtual options exist.
Costs aid may not cover
Even with a full-need package, budget for:
- The SEVIS fee and US visa application fee.
- Long-haul flights beyond the $1,050 travel estimate.
- Health insurance if your package does not include it.
- Winter clothing for St. Louis winters.
- Summer living costs if you stay in the US.
- A laptop, which some programmes specify.
If you are admitted without aid, your family pays every line of the $102,260 budget plus insurance.
WashU majors, campus and city
Undergraduates join one of WashU’s schools: the College of Arts & Sciences, Olin Business School, McKelvey School of Engineering, or the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts (art and architecture). WashU is best known for biology, neuroscience, pre-medical study and public health, alongside its School of Medicine. Business, economics, psychology, biomedical engineering, computer science and architecture are also popular.
The main Danforth Campus is next to Forest Park on the western edge of St. Louis, Missouri. St. Louis is a mid-sized Midwestern city, cheaper than the East Coast cities where many peer universities sit.
WashU graduate admissions for international students
Graduate and professional programmes apply directly to each school, such as the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, McKelvey Engineering, Olin, the Brown School, the School of Law and the School of Medicine. Each sets its own deadlines, test rules, English minimums and funding. Doctoral offers commonly include funding; most master’s students pay their own way, so look for outside awards such as the Fulbright Scholarship.

Who should apply to WashU
Apply if you have top grades, a clear academic interest you can explain in 250 words, and either the means to pay or a strong case for aid. WashU suits students heading toward medicine, life sciences, business or design who want a mid-sized university with flexible majors.
If you need aid, apply anyway, because WashU meets full need, but spread your list across several need-aware and need-blind universities. With only a few dozen funded international undergraduates, competition for aid is stiff.
