Whetstone Scholarship 2027: Eligibility, Essay Prompts and Deadline

Whetstone Scholarship 2027: Eligibility, Essay Prompts and Deadline
The Whetstone Family Foundation Scholarship funds high school seniors from Appalachian Ohio and Geauga County who plan to study medicine, public health, healthcare or the arts. Here are the eligible counties, essay prompts, documents and the April deadline.

The Whetstone Scholarship is the Whetstone Family Foundation Scholarship, a renewable college award from a small family foundation in Middlefield, Ohio. It is for high school seniors who live in one of Ohio’s 32 Appalachian counties or in Geauga County and plan to study medicine, public health, healthcare or the arts. The foundation does not publish a fixed amount, and it says GPA is not a barrier to applying.

Who can apply: only residents of those Ohio counties. International students and US students from other states are not eligible. The 2026 round closed on 30 April 2026. The next round is for seniors starting college in autumn 2027, and the deadline is 30 April 2027.

Who runs the Whetstone Family Foundation?

Brent and Heather Whetstone set up the foundation in 2023. It is registered with Candid (GuideStar) as The Whetstone Family Charitable Foundation, based in Middlefield, Geauga County. Its stated aim is to help Appalachian Ohio, mainly by backing high school seniors who want to study medicine and the arts. Besides scholarships it runs a Thanksgiving meal kit programme, a Christmas gift drive for families and an arts fellowship.

It is a young, family-funded foundation, so the programme is small. It does not publish how many students it funds or how much each one gets, and it told Candid it no longer tracks metrics for the scholarship.

Whetstone Scholarship eligibility

The 2026 rules on the foundation’s scholarship page set out four conditions:

  1. You are a high school senior who will start at a college or university in the coming autumn.
  2. You live in one of Ohio’s 32 Appalachian counties or in Geauga County.
  3. You will study medicine, public health, healthcare or the arts.
  4. You attend an accredited college. Ohio colleges are not required.

There is no GPA cut-off. The foundation weighs your commitment to your field, your essay and your recommendations. The award is renewable in the sense that you may reapply each year while you still qualify, so a first award does not lock in later years.

Ohio counties that qualify

The 32 Appalachian counties are the ones the Appalachian Regional Commission lists for Ohio. Geauga County is added by the foundation because that is its home county.

Eligibility edge cases

The foundation’s rules are short, so some situations are not covered in writing. Here is how I read them, and where you should ask before you apply.

  • You live in a qualifying county but go to school in another: the rule is about where you live, not where your school is. Use your home address on the form.
  • You are homeschooled: the foundation does not mention homeschoolers. If you are completing your senior year and starting college in the autumn, email the foundation to confirm before you write the essay.
  • You plan nursing, pharmacy, dentistry or physical therapy: the foundation says “healthcare” without a list of majors. These all sit naturally under healthcare, but name your intended programme clearly so the committee does not have to guess.
  • You want to study music, theatre or creative writing: the arts prompt mentions music, storytelling, craft and visual art, so performing and literary arts look welcome.
  • You are taking a gap year: the rules say you start college in the coming autumn. A deferred start is not mentioned, so ask first.
  • You are starting at a community college: the requirement is an accredited college, and Ohio colleges are not required. Community colleges are accredited institutions, so this should not rule you out, but your major still has to be in one of the four fields.
  • Your major is undecided: the award is tied to medicine, public health, healthcare or the arts. If you are torn between, say, nursing and business, apply only if you can write honestly about the health side.

What the Whetstone Scholarship covers

The money can go toward tuition, books, required fees and other education costs, and the foundation says it is aimed mainly at the first year of college. No dollar figure appears on the foundation’s page, on Candid or on the scholarship databases that list it. Scholarships.com describes the amount as varying with need and available funds. If you are building a college budget, count it as a top-up, and do not assume it will cover a full year.

Costs you should plan to cover yourself

Because the amount is not fixed, plan your first year as if the award could be modest. These costs are most likely to fall on you or on other aid:

  • Housing and meals, which the foundation’s list of covered costs does not name
  • Travel between home and campus
  • Art supplies, instruments or clinical equipment beyond required course fees
  • Second, third and fourth years, unless you reapply and win again

File the FAFSA as well. Federal and Ohio state aid are separate from this award, and most families in Appalachian Ohio will want every source they can stack.

Whetstone Scholarship essay prompts

You answer the prompt that matches your field. These are the 2026 prompts; the foundation can change them each cycle.

Your fieldPromptWhat to cover
ArtsThe artistic heritage of AppalachiaRegional traditions such as music, storytelling, craft and visual art, how they shape identity, and how you would carry them forward in your own work
Medicine, public health, healthcareHealth literacy in AppalachiaHow health literacy affects community wellbeing, barriers such as income, distance and education, and community-based fixes you would propose

For the health prompt, I would anchor the essay in one real situation you have seen, such as a relative struggling to follow a discharge plan or a long drive to the nearest clinic, then build your proposal from it. For the arts prompt, write about a tradition you have practised yourself, not a list of every Appalachian art form.

How to write the Whetstone Scholarship essay

The committee says it looks for a real calling to your field, goals, how you have handled setbacks, and character. A family foundation reads every essay itself, so a local, personal story will beat a polished general one. Check the form for a word limit; if none is given, 500 to 650 words is a sensible length.

  1. Open with a scene: one moment from your county that shows the problem or the tradition.
  2. Explain what is behind it: for health, the barriers (cost, distance, reading level, trust); for arts, what the tradition carries and why it is at risk or changing.
  3. Show your part so far: volunteering, a job, lessons, a performance, a family role. A setback you handled fits here.
  4. Propose something small and local: a clinic flyer in plain English, a church health talk, a youth music workshop. Specific beats grand.
  5. Close on your college plan: the major and how it leads back to the region.

Two example openings, my own illustrations rather than winning essays:

  • Health prompt: “My grandfather came home from the hospital in Athens with four new medicines and a printed sheet he could not read. I spent that night making him a chart with pictures, and that was the first time I understood what health literacy means in our county.”
  • Arts prompt: “Every Sunday after church, my aunt plays the same three fiddle tunes her father taught her, and nobody under forty in our family knows them. I have spent the last year learning them by ear.”

How to apply for the Whetstone Scholarship

Suggested timeline for the 2027 round

  1. January 2027: Confirm your county and field qualify and check the foundation’s page for the new prompts.
  2. February: Ask two recommenders and give them at least six weeks.
  3. March: Draft and revise your essay.
  4. By 30 April: Submit the online application with essay and both letters.

Inside the application itself, work through these steps:

  1. Go to whetstonefamilyfoundation.org/scholarships and open the “apply now” form for the current year.
  2. Fill in the application form with your school, county of residence, intended college and intended major.
  3. Write your personal essay on the prompt for your field.
  4. Arrange two letters of recommendation. The foundation accepts teachers, mentors, faith leaders or community members.
  5. Submit before 30 April and keep a copy of everything you sent.

Scholarships.com also lists a resume of your activities and volunteer work. The foundation’s own page does not ask for one, but having a one-page summary ready helps your recommenders write specific letters. Our scholarship recommendation letter samples show what a strong letter contains.

When you pick recommenders, choose people who can speak to the field you are entering. A science teacher or a nurse you shadowed suits a health applicant; an art teacher, choir director or a craftsperson you learned from suits an arts applicant. A faith leader or coach can cover character. Give each of them your essay draft so their letters back up the same story.

How winners are chosen

A committee of Whetstone family members and partners of the foundation reviews applications. It looks for a real calling to your field, an essay that shows your goals and how you have handled setbacks, and letters that speak to your character and leadership. Many of the students it has supported are the first in their families to go to college, according to an Appalachia Funders Network profile of the foundation.

Common mistakes on Whetstone applications

  • Applying from a county that is not on the list. Check the table above against your home address.
  • Answering the wrong prompt, for example an arts essay from a pre-med applicant.
  • Writing about Appalachia in general terms copied from websites instead of about your own town and family.
  • Asking recommenders in late April. Give them six weeks.
  • Confusing this award with the CSU Chico engineering scholarship of a similar name.
  • Spending essay space apologising for your GPA. GPA is not a barrier here, so put that space into your story instead.

What happens after you apply

The committee reviews applications after the 30 April deadline. The foundation does not publish a date for results, how winners are contacted, or whether the money goes to you or your college. Most foundation scholarships are paid to the college, so expect to give the foundation your college details and student ID once you accept. When you know the amount, report it to your college’s financial aid office, because outside scholarships can change your aid package.

If you win, keep in touch with the foundation through your first year. You will need to reapply for later years, and a short update on your grades and progress makes that application easier.

Who should apply, and who should not

Apply if you are a senior in one of the listed counties, you are heading into medicine, nursing, public health, another health field or the arts, and you have a story about your community you can tell honestly. It is especially worth your time if your grades are not top of the class, because the foundation says GPA is not a barrier, and if you will be the first in your family at college.

Skip it if you live outside the 33 counties, are already in college and have never held the award, are going into engineering, business or another unrelated field, or need a guaranteed amount to make your college decision. In that last case, treat Whetstone as a bonus and secure your main funding elsewhere.

Not from Appalachian Ohio?

International applicants cannot use this award. If you want a fully funded undergraduate place abroad, read our guide to the Lester B. Pearson Scholarship in Canada. Ohio students outside the eligible counties can search the LEAF Ohio scholarship database, which lists many county-based awards.
