FUTIA Physics Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

FUTIA’s minimum UTME score for Physics is 160, with no departmental cut-off published. See subjects, O’level, screening, fees, CAPS steps and a safe target score for 2027/2028.

The FUTIA Physics cut-off mark is 160 in the UTME. The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) declared 160 as its minimum at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting on 11 May 2026, and its 2026/2027 supplementary admission notice, signed by the Registrar, Mrs. Offiongita E. Nkang, repeats 160 for candidates who chose FUTIA first. FUTIA has not published a separate departmental cut-off for Physics, so 160 is the only official figure.

2027/2028 update: FUTIA cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Physics is one of the four original programmes in FUTIA’s School of Pure and Applied Sciences and appears on the Myschool reprint of JAMB’s FUTIA list. At a technology university it is a base for electronics, energy and space science work.

Below you will find the official figures, a safe target score (my advice, clearly labelled), the UTME and O’level requirements, what FUTIA’s screening involves, a worked example, the CAPS and portal steps, and what you study in Physics at FUTIA.

FUTIA has held its general minimum at 160 in every source I found, and it has never published a separate figure for Physics. Blogs that print a departmental cut-off for FUTIA are guessing; there is no FUTIA document behind them.

Safe target score for Physics at FUTIA (my advice)

This is my judgement as an admissions adviser, not a FUTIA rule. FUTIA admits from the pool of candidates who clear 160 and does not publish the score of the last person admitted to each course.

Your UTME scoreMy read for Physics at FUTIA
Below 160Not eligible for FUTIA this cycle
160 to 169Eligible, with a reasonable chance if your O’level grades are good (this course had places left for the supplementary round)
170 and aboveStrong. This is the range I would aim for.

Physics is rarely a first choice, which keeps competition low. It was on FUTIA’s 29 October 2026 supplementary list. For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 170 and make sure every O’level subject the course needs is a credit.

Catchment and quotas

FUTIA is a federal university, and federal universities generally admit under merit, catchment and educationally less developed states (ELDS) quotas. FUTIA has not published its own split or a catchment list, so plan on merit: your UTME score and O’level grades.

UTME subject combination and O’level for Physics at FUTIA

RequirementPhysics at FUTIA
UTME subjectsUse of English, Physics, Mathematics and either Chemistry or Biology. JAMB’s usual combination; confirm on the JAMB e-brochure.
O’levelFive credits: English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and one other science (Further Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural Science)
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO or NABTEB (FUTIA charges ₦3,000 to verify O’level results)
SittingsBlog reprints of FUTIA’s requirements say not more than two; FUTIA’s own notice was not available to confirm
Direct EntryNCE, or two A level passes in Physics and either Mathematics or Chemistry (JAMB general line; FUTIA has not published its own DE rules)
AgeA 2024 blog reprint says candidates should be at least 16 in the year of admission

Physics and Mathematics are compulsory, with Chemistry or Biology as the third UTME subject. Economics and Geography are not on the general brochure line.

FUTIA has not published course-by-course subject requirements on any page I could read, so the lines above are JAMB’s general ones from Myschool’s brochure reprint, checked on 3 November 2026. The brochure pages carried no FUTIA-specific remark, so FUTIA is expected to follow the general line.

How FUTIA screening works

FUTIA’s screening runs through its portal, portal.futia.edu.ng. FUTIA has not published an aggregate formula or confirmed whether its screening includes a written test, and I found no official statement either way.

Worked example for a Physics candidate

FUTIA has not published how it ranks candidates, so this example is illustrative. Many Nigerian universities convert the UTME score to 50 marks (score divided by 8) and add 50 marks from screening. I use that method only to show how the numbers work.

  1. Utibeabasi’s UTME: 175 minus 160 = 15. Utibeabasi clears the FUTIA minimum by 15 marks, and is 5 marks above my safe target of 170.
  2. Utibeabasi’s illustrative aggregate: 175 divided by 8 = 21.88, plus half of a 60% screening score (30) = 51.88 out of 100.
  3. Daniel’s UTME: 163 minus 160 = 3. Daniel is eligible, but only just.
  4. Daniel’s illustrative aggregate: 163 divided by 8 = 20.38, plus half of a 55% screening score (27.5) = 47.88 out of 100, about 4 points behind Utibeabasi.
  5. What I would advise: Utibeabasi should keep Physics as the course choice. Daniel should watch CAPS for a Transfer Approval to a related FUTIA course and accept it if FUTIA matters more than Physics.

Even on this made-up formula, the 12-mark UTME gap between the two candidates becomes about 1.5 aggregate points before screening starts, which is hard to close on screening alone.

How to apply for Physics at FUTIA, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME: choose Physics with Use of English plus Physics, Mathematics and either Chemistry or Biology, and make FUTIA your first choice. If you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution before FUTIA’s screening opens.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: FUTIA issued a notice to Post-UTME candidates about uploading O’level results. Do it at an accredited JAMB centre as soon as your result is out.
  4. Register on the FUTIA portal: create and verify an account on portal.futia.edu.ng, pay the ₦2,000 screening fee and complete the screening form.
  5. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, go to Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept the offer if it is the course you want. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  6. Pay acceptance and verification: on the FUTIA portal, pay the ₦30,000 acceptance fee and the ₦3,000 O’level verification fee.
  7. Complete registration: fill your biodata, register your courses and collect your matriculation number on the portal.
  8. Pay school fees in full: FUTIA’s 2026/2027 fee schedule (Myschool, 23 September 2026) requires 100% payment at registration and scrapped the old 70/30 instalment plan. Engineering and non-engineering programmes have separate charges.

Warning

Every genuine FUTIA admission shows on JAMB CAPS, and FUTIA’s fees are paid through portal.futia.edu.ng. Do not pay anyone who promises a Physics place or a list slot.

For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the deadline for public universities, and that date has now passed. FUTIA released its supplementary form two days before it, on 29 October 2026. If you are planning for 2027/2028, start from the 2027 UTME: read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and how to check your JAMB result.

Studying Physics at FUTIA

FUTIA was established by the Federal Government in June 2021 as one of two new federal universities of technology (the other is in Jigawa State). Its Vice-Chancellor is Prof. Leo Daniel. The university lists six focus areas: Aviation and Space Technology, Oil and Gas, Maritime and Ship Building, Computing Technology, Biotechnology and Informatics, and Agricultural Technology. Its academic units are called Schools, not Faculties. Physics is in the School of Pure and Applied Sciences.

Accreditation

No NUC accreditation result naming FUTIA and Physics was found. FUTIA’s website describes its programmes as running on NUC’s CCMAS curriculum, which is about the course content, not an accreditation grade. NUC normally accredits a programme before its first students graduate, and FUTIA, founded in 2021, has not reported accreditation results for any programme. Professional council accreditation for this programme is not confirmed.

What you study

  • Mechanics, waves, optics and electromagnetism
  • Quantum and statistical physics
  • Electronics and instrumentation
  • Solid state and nuclear physics
  • Computational physics and a research project

Careers

Graduates work in electronics and instrumentation, energy and renewable power, meteorology and space agencies, geophysics in oil and gas, and teaching. Physics is also a strong base for a later switch into engineering or data work.

For UTME revision, start with our JAMB Chemistry syllabus.

Mistakes that cost Physics applicants a FUTIA place

  • Treating 160 as an admission score: it is the minimum to apply, and the score that gets you in is usually higher.
  • The wrong UTME subjects: Physics needs Use of English, Physics, Mathematics and either Chemistry or Biology. A wrong combination cannot be fixed after the exam.
  • FUTIA not as first choice: the 2026/2027 notices limited screening to candidates who chose FUTIA first.
  • O’level not on CAPS: FUTIA cannot offer you admission until your result is uploaded.
  • Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: the acceptance fee, verification fee and full school fees are separate steps on the FUTIA portal.

FUTIA Physics cut-off mark: frequently asked questions

Is 165 enough for Physics at FUTIA? 165 clears FUTIA’s 160 minimum by 5 marks, so you are eligible. FUTIA does not publish departmental cut-offs, and I would aim for 170 or more to be comfortable.

Can I change from Physics to Engineering at FUTIA later? Inter-departmental transfer rules at FUTIA have not been published. Do not choose Physics only to switch later; apply for the course you want.

Is 162 enough for Physics at FUTIA? It clears the 160 minimum. Physics was still open in the 2026/2027 supplementary round, so a candidate with good O’levels had a chance at that score.

What is the FUTIA acceptance fee for Physics? FUTIA’s registration guidelines (Myschool, 21 October 2026) list ₦30,000 for acceptance, plus ₦3,000 for O’level verification. Both are paid on portal.futia.edu.ng.
