Caritas University Cut-Off Mark for Medical Laboratory Science 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

Medical Laboratory Science at Caritas University needs at least 150 in the UTME, not the 140 on its website. See subjects, O’level, Direct Entry, admission without post-UTME, NUC status and the MLSCN check.

The Caritas University cut-off mark for Medical Laboratory Science is 150 in the UTME for 2026/2027. Caritas’s admissions page says the cut-off for medical lab is 140, but JAMB’s 2026 minimum for every university is 150, so a score of 140 to 149 cannot get you admitted through JAMB CAPS. Caritas does not write a post-UTME test, and the course holds Full NUC accreditation that runs to 2030.

2027/2028 update: Caritas cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Medical Laboratory Science is on JAMB’s course list for Caritas University under that exact name, and Caritas lists it in its Faculty of Allied and Medical Sciences for 2026/2027. The NUC’s latest published result is Full accreditation with a maturity date of 2030, the longest run of any health course at Caritas.

The professional side is less clear. Medical laboratory scientists are licensed by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), which also controls how many students each university may admit into the B.MLS. I found no public MLSCN list or notice that names Caritas. The approval may exist without being published, and one written question to the department will settle it. Below: the 150 floor, a safe target score, subjects, Direct Entry, admission without a test and the steps to apply.

140 or 150: which Caritas Medical Laboratory Science cut-off is right?

Caritas’s admissions page for 2026/2027 says, in plain words, that the cut-off is 140 for radiography, medical lab and nursing. JAMB’s policy meeting of 11 May 2026 set 150 as the lowest UTME score any Nigerian university may admit with for the 2026/2027 session. A university may ask for more than 150 but never less.

The reason the JAMB figure wins is CAPS. Every admission has to be processed on JAMB’s Central Admissions Processing System, and JAMB has said admissions done outside CAPS are illegal. A candidate on 146 cannot be recommended on CAPS for Medical Laboratory Science at Caritas, whatever the school’s page says.

Caritas has another admission notice on its website, headed for the 2025/2026 session, and its body still talks about a minimum score “in the 2019 JAMB UTME” and a closing date of 15 February 2025. That shows how much of the school’s admission text is carried forward from year to year. Treat 140 as an old Caritas number and 150 as the one that decides your admission.

Scored between 140 and 149?

  • Rewrite the UTME in 2027: aim well above 150 so the floor never becomes a question, and keep Caritas and the exact course name on your form.
  • Consider JUPEB at Caritas: the admissions page says JUPEB admission is open for 2026/2027. Good JUPEB passes can take you into 200 level by Direct Entry in a later session, without a UTME score. JAMB’s Direct Entry rule for Medical Laboratory Science asks for A’Level passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology, so choose those JUPEB subjects.
  • Take a related science course: Microbiology or Biochemistry at Caritas use the same four UTME subjects. They are different degrees and do not lead to an MLSCN licence, so pick one only if you would be happy to finish it.
  • Look at a polytechnic ND: JAMB’s 2026/2027 minimum for polytechnics is 100. An ND followed by Direct Entry takes longer, but you keep moving. A Medical Laboratory Technician route at a college of health technology is another option, but it leads to a technician qualification, not the B.MLS.

Blogs such as O3schools (January 2026) and Studentship repeat Caritas’s 140 and the absence of a written post-UTME test. None of them mentions JAMB’s 150 floor, and none gives a Medical Laboratory Science figure from an official Caritas source.

Safe target score for Caritas Medical Laboratory Science

Caritas does not publish how many people apply for each course or the lowest score it admitted last year. The bands below are my advice as an admissions adviser, based on how private universities in the South East fill courses like this one. They are not a Caritas rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for Medical Laboratory Science at Caritas
Below 150Cannot be admitted on CAPS for 2026/2027
150 to 164Eligible. Possible with a clean O’level, but MLS seats are limited by council quota
165 to 189Comfortable at a private university with no test
190 and aboveStrong

For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 170. Medical Laboratory Science attracts many candidates who missed Medicine and Nursing, and the MLSCN caps how many students each university may take, so even a private school can fill the course before it reaches the 150s.

Caritas Medical Laboratory Science subject combination and O’level requirements

RequirementWhat applies to Medical Laboratory Science at Caritas
Course name to pick on JAMBMedical Laboratory Science
UTME subjects (JAMB brochure)Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
Caritas remark on UTMENone; JAMB’s general rule applies
O’level (JAMB brochure)Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
O’level (Caritas Faculty of Allied and Medical Sciences)English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
Sittings and exam bodiesNot more than two sittings; WAEC, NECO and NABTEB can be combined
Awaiting resultsAccepted if results will be available at resumption

The UTME combination is fixed: English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Mathematics does not replace Physics for this course, though you need a Mathematics credit at O’level.

Caritas’s faculty list matches JAMB’s brochure, so one set of results covers both: credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, in no more than two sittings. The same set qualifies you for Nursing and Radiography at Caritas, which is useful if you are offered a change of course on CAPS.

Direct Entry into Medical Laboratory Science at Caritas

JAMB’s brochure has no Caritas remark for Medical Laboratory Science, so the general Direct Entry rule applies:

  • A’Level passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Zoology.
  • JUPEB or IJMB passes in the same subjects are normally treated like A’Level for Direct Entry; confirm with Caritas which it accepts.
  • Holders of a Medical Laboratory Technician certificate or a related ND sometimes seek Direct Entry; the brochure entry does not list that route, so ask Caritas in writing before relying on it.

Direct Entry candidates still register with JAMB, pick Caritas and the exact course name, and receive their offer on CAPS. If your previous school must confirm your result on JAMB’s e-Facility, push them early. Caritas cannot complete the admission until JAMB can see that result.

Is there a Caritas post-UTME for Medical Laboratory Science?

No. Caritas’s admission notice says there is no post-UTME screening test, and earlier notices and admission blogs say the same thing. Keep in mind that the notice is recycled text (it still refers to the 2019 UTME), so ask the admissions office to confirm the rule for your own session. The no-test policy has held for several years.

With no test, Caritas works from your file. It checks that your UTME score is at least 150, that your UTME subjects fit Medical Laboratory Science, that your O’level has the credits the faculty asks for, and that the result is uploaded on CAPS. The admissions page also says candidates who did not choose Caritas first can apply, and that candidates awaiting results can apply if the results will be out by resumption.

Worked example (illustrative)

Caritas has published no aggregate formula, and without a test there is nothing to add to your UTME score. What you can do is check your own file against each requirement. The two candidates below are made up to show how.

Kosisochukwu scored 174 with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. His NECO shows C4 in English, B3 in Mathematics, C5 in Physics, B2 in Chemistry and B3 in Biology, from one sitting.

  1. Score: 174 minus 150 = 24. He is 24 marks clear of JAMB’s floor and in my comfortable band.
  2. UTME subjects: the four the course requires.
  3. O’level: all five credits in one sitting.
  4. Verdict: a strong Caritas file once his O’level is on CAPS. He should still ask the department about MLSCN approval before paying fees.

Chidera scored 161 but wrote English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology. Her score clears 150, yet Medical Laboratory Science needs Physics in the UTME, so her combination fails the subject check. She could ask Caritas about Biochemistry or Microbiology for this session, or rewrite the UTME with Physics in 2027.

How to apply for Medical Laboratory Science at Caritas University

  1. Create your JAMB profile: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with a profile code.
  2. Register for the UTME: choose Medical Laboratory Science at Caritas University and write English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. If you already picked another school first, Caritas says you can still apply, but you will need a JAMB change of institution so the offer can be made on CAPS.
  3. Check and print your result: you need 150 or more. Our guide on checking your JAMB result covers the steps.
  4. Upload your O’level on CAPS: go to a JAMB-accredited centre with your result details. Without the upload, Caritas cannot recommend you.
  5. Apply on the Caritas website: start from caritasuni.edu.ng/admissions. The page says 2026/2027 admission is open, but it does not show a form fee or a closing date, so confirm both with the admissions office (info@caritasuni.edu.ng) before you pay.
  6. Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept when the offer appears. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  7. Pay acceptance and school fees and clear: Caritas has not published 2026/2027 amounts. Get the official figures and the university’s own account details before paying anything.

JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for private universities (News Agency of Nigeria, 11 May 2026). Caritas says its 2026/2027 admission is open, so any offer for this session has to show on CAPS before that date.

Fees are the biggest gap in what Caritas publishes. Its recent notice says fees were “recently revised” without listing amounts, and the fee tables that blogs reprint are from 2021/2022. The admissions page also links to the NELFUND student loan portal (portal.nelf.gov.ng); ask the bursary whether Caritas students can apply in your year.

Ask this before you pay

The NUC grades Caritas Medical Laboratory Science as Full to 2030, but no public MLSCN list naming Caritas was found. Ask the department in writing to confirm its MLSCN approval and admission quota, and that its graduates are inducted and do the council’s internship.

Studying Medical Laboratory Science at Caritas University

Medical Laboratory Science sits in Caritas’s Faculty of Allied and Medical Sciences with Nursing and Radiography, on the Amorji-Nike campus in Enugu. The B.MLS in Nigeria normally takes five years. Caritas has not stated the duration or its teaching hospital arrangements on the pages I read.

What you study

  • Early years: chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, then human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry.
  • Core laboratory disciplines: medical microbiology, haematology and blood transfusion science, chemical pathology (clinical chemistry) and histopathology.
  • Supporting subjects: immunology, parasitology, virology, laboratory management and quality control.
  • Final stages: hospital laboratory postings and a research project, then the MLSCN’s internship and induction for graduates of approved programmes.

Accreditation and professional approval

NUC: the NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 list Medical Laboratory Science at Caritas as Full, with a maturity date of 2030. A Full grade lasts five years, so the next NUC visit is not due before 2030.

MLSCN: the council said in December 2023 (News Agency of Nigeria) that 48 universities offered the B.MLS and that it planned to double their admission quotas, but the report named no university. I found no public MLSCN list naming Caritas. Ask the department for its MLSCN approval and its current quota.

Careers after Medical Laboratory Science

  • Medical laboratory scientist in hospital, private diagnostic and public health laboratories, after MLSCN licensing.
  • Blood bank and transfusion services.
  • Quality assurance, research and laboratory roles with pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies.
  • Public health surveillance and disease control programmes.
  • Postgraduate study and teaching in any of the laboratory specialties.

For UTME revision, use our JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus, and practise Physics past questions alongside them.

Mistakes Medical Laboratory Science applicants make at Caritas

  • Planning with 140: any score below 150 cannot be admitted on CAPS in 2026/2027.
  • Writing Mathematics instead of Physics: Physics is compulsory in the UTME for this course.
  • Mixing up the courses: Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology and Biochemistry are separate options on JAMB. Only Medical Laboratory Science leads to an MLSCN licence.
  • Not asking about the council: NUC accreditation is one check; the MLSCN quota and approval are the other.
  • No O’level on CAPS: a good score without an uploaded result stalls your file.
  • Paying for a “slot”: there is no test to help you pass. Real offers show on your CAPS page.
  • Stopping after CAPS acceptance: acceptance fee, clearance and course registration at Caritas are separate steps.

Sources and updates

Caritas University’s admissions page and faculty pages (read on 30 October 2026) give the “140 and above” figure, the statement that the cut-off is 140 for radiography, medical lab and nursing, the open 2026/2027 session, the rules for candidates who did not choose Caritas first and for awaiting results, and the faculty O’level list. The no-test rule and the references to the 2019 UTME and a 15 February 2025 closing date come from Caritas’s notice headed for the 2025/2026 session, signed by the Registrar, M. I. Onwuka. The 150 minimum, the rule that admissions must go through CAPS and the 30 November 2026 deadline for private universities come from the News Agency of Nigeria report of 11 May 2026. The course name is from JAMB’s course list for Caritas University and the subject and Direct Entry rules from the JAMB brochure entry for Medical Laboratory Science, both reprinted by Myschool. NUC status is from the NUC Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025, published in September 2026. The MLSCN quota report is from the News Agency of Nigeria (December 2023).
