There is no separate ABSU cut off mark for Film and Multimedia Studies yet, because the course is brand new. Abia State University (ABSU) said on 29 September 2026 that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had approved a B.Sc. in Film and Multimedia Studies from the 2026/2027 session. The only figure ABSU has published is its general minimum of 150 in the UTME for every regular degree course, so 150 is the floor you should plan with.
2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
When I checked on 29 October 2026, Film and Multimedia Studies was not on ABSU’s JAMB course list, so you cannot yet pick it at ABSU on JAMB. NUC’s accreditation results publication has no line for it at ABSU, which is normal for a programme approved this year but means it has no accreditation result yet. ABSU told candidates to wait for guidelines from its Admissions Office. Until those guidelines come out, the safe choices at ABSU are Mass Communication (on the JAMB list, NUC full accreditation after a December 2024 visit) and Linguistics and Communication Studies (on the list, NUC Full).

Does ABSU offer Film and Multimedia Studies for 2027/2028?
ABSU has approval to run it. Whether it takes its first UTME students in 2027/2028 has not been announced. Here is the record in date order.
| Date | What happened | Source |
|---|---|---|
| January 2020 | NUC’s Director of Information said Mass Communication was being split into seven degrees, including Film and Multi-Media Studies, under a Faculty of Communication and Media Studies. He added that the original Mass Communication degree was not abolished. | The ICIR, 9 January 2020 |
| February 2023 | ABSU’s then Vice-Chancellor said the Mass Communication department had been unbundled into seven new departments | ThisDay, 8 February 2023 |
| 29 September 2026 | ABSU’s Media Unit said NUC approved ten new programmes from 2026/2027, among them a B.Sc. in Film and Multimedia Studies, and asked candidates to “wait for further guidelines” | The Whistler |
| 29 October 2026 | Not on ABSU’s JAMB course list; Mass Communication still listed | Myschool reprint |
The statement did not say which faculty will house the course, how many students it will take or when admission opens. A course has to appear on JAMB’s list for ABSU before CAPS can carry an offer for it.
ABSU cut-off mark history that applies to Film and Multimedia Studies
| Session | Figure | What it covers | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Lowest UTME score for ABSU online screening in any regular degree course | ABSU notice, reprinted 8 and 9 June 2026 |
| 2026 (national) | 150 | JAMB minimum for all universities | JAMB 2026 policy meeting |
| 2025/2026 | Not confirmed | I could not open ABSU’s notice for that session | Unverified |
| Film and Multimedia Studies | None | New course; no departmental figure exists | Any “official” figure on a blog is invented |
Safe target score (my advice)
Nobody knows yet how many candidates will want a film degree at ABSU, or how many places it will have. First intakes for new courses are often small. I would plan as if the course will compete with Mass Communication, since the two draw the same students.
| Your UTME score | My read |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for ABSU screening |
| 150 to 179 | Eligible, but weak for a new, small intake |
| 180 to 199 | A fair chance with good O’level grades |
| 200 and above | Strong for either Film and Multimedia Studies or Mass Communication |
I would aim for 190 or more. That score keeps you competitive for Mass Communication too, which matters if the film degree does not open in time.
JAMB subject combination and O’level for Film and Multimedia Studies
JAMB’s brochure already has a general entry called “Film and Multi Media Studies”. ABSU is not named on it, because ABSU has not been added. The general rules below are what JAMB applies unless a university adds its own remark, so they are the best guide you have until ABSU’s entry appears.
| Requirement | General JAMB brochure line |
|---|---|
| UTME | Use of English plus any three arts or social science subjects |
| O’level | Five credits: English Language and four other arts or social science subjects |
| Direct Entry | Two A-level passes in arts or social science subjects |
| University remarks | Only Pan-Atlantic University is named (it asks for credits in English, Literature in English and Government, and accepts ND, NCE and HND at lower credit for Direct Entry) |
| ABSU remark | None; ABSU is not on the entry |
These rules match ABSU’s Mass Communication entry almost word for word, so one set of UTME subjects can keep you eligible for both. I would sit Use of English, Literature in English, Government and CRS (or Economics). Literature suits a course built on storytelling and scriptwriting, and Government is the one Pan-Atlantic names.
The general O’level line does not name Mathematics. ABSU’s screening notice speaks of “basic five” credits, and most universities expect at least a Mathematics pass, so I would not go in with a failed Mathematics paper. A credit in Literature in English and in Government would cover you if ABSU copies remarks like Pan-Atlantic’s.
Which JAMB course name to register
Register the course name exactly as it shows under Abia State University on JAMB’s list when you register. On 29 October 2026 that meant “Mass Communication”, because “Film and Multi Media Studies” was not listed for ABSU. If JAMB adds the film course to ABSU’s list before or during the 2027 registration, you can choose it then, or switch later with a JAMB change of course while the window is open.
Direct Entry
The general Direct Entry line asks for two A-level passes in arts or social science subjects. ABSU has no remark on this entry, so it has not said whether it will take ND or HND holders in film, theatre or mass communication. ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice required Direct Entry candidates to have the basic five O’level credits.
How ABSU screening works
ABSU has not issued screening rules for the new courses. The 2026/2027 notice for regular degree courses, signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, is the best guide to what to expect. I could not open the original on ABSU’s website; Osilight and Myschool reprinted it on 8 and 9 June 2026.
| Detail | 2026/2027 notice |
|---|---|
| Eligible | ABSU first or second choice (or changed to ABSU), 150 or more in the UTME |
| Register at | www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng |
| Uploads | UTME result, O’level result and any degree certificate, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal |
| Fee | ₦2,000, e-payment through the listed banks or by debit card |
| Written test | Not mentioned; online document screening |
| If you skip it | You “will not be considered for admission” |
Worked example (illustrative)
ABSU has not published an aggregate formula. To show how O’level grades can change your rank, I use a method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, with A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5. This is my illustration, not ABSU’s formula.
- Ugochi scored 196 with B2 in English, A1 in Literature in English, B3 in Government, B2 in CRS and B3 in Civic Education at one sitting. UTME points: 196 ÷ 8 = 24.5. O’level points: 9 + 10 + 8 + 9 + 8 = 44. Total: 68.5.
- Emeka scored 212 with C5 in English, C6 in Literature in English, C5 in Government, C6 in Economics and C4 in CRS over two sittings. UTME points: 212 ÷ 8 = 26.5. O’level points: 6 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 7 = 29. Total: 55.5.
- Result: Ugochi leads by 13 points even though Emeka scored 16 more in the UTME.
How to position yourself for ABSU Film and Multimedia Studies
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN.
- Register the UTME: choose Abia State University and the course name that JAMB lists for it. If the film course is still missing, register Mass Communication with Use of English and three arts or social science subjects. First choice is the cleanest position; ABSU accepted second choice too in 2026/2027. Use a JAMB change of institution if you need to move ABSU up.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited JAMB CBT centre once your result is out. CAPS cannot clear you without it.
- Watch for ABSU’s guidelines: the statement told candidates to wait for the Admissions Office. Check ABSU’s website and JAMB’s list before you change course.
- Register for ABSU screening: pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) on the ABSU portal and upload your UTME and O’level results.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept within the four weeks JAMB allows. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and tuition fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only what your ABSU portal invoice shows.
Warning
A new course attracts people who sell “first batch” places. Every genuine ABSU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admission outside CAPS is illegal. Do not pay anyone to place you in Film and Multimedia Studies; pay only through the ABSU portal.
For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the admission deadline for public universities such as ABSU. A course that was not on ABSU’s JAMB list could not take UTME candidates in that cycle, so 2027/2028 is the earliest realistic intake.
What Film and Multimedia Studies covers
ABSU has not published a curriculum. Film and multimedia degrees in Nigeria sit inside NUC’s Communication and Media Studies group and usually include:
- Film history and theory: world cinema, African cinema and how Nollywood grew.
- Screenwriting: story structure, treatments and scripts for film, television and web series.
- Production: directing, cinematography, lighting and sound recording.
- Post-production: editing, colour, sound design and visual effects.
- Multimedia: graphics, animation, photography and content for digital platforms.
- The business side: producing, distribution, media law, copyright and film regulation.
Expect a B.Sc. over four years, which is the usual length for these degrees; ABSU has not confirmed it. A practical course like this depends on studios, cameras and editing suites, so ask ABSU what equipment the department has before you commit.
Careers
- Film and television production: director, producer, editor or camera operator.
- Screenwriter for film, television and streaming platforms.
- Video and multimedia producer for brands, agencies and NGOs.
- Motion graphics designer or animator.
- Content creator or digital media manager.
- Postgraduate study in film, media or communication.

Mistakes to avoid
- Picking a course JAMB does not list for ABSU: CAPS can only offer what is on the list.
- Science subjects in the UTME: the general line wants arts or social science subjects.
- Trusting a blog “cut-off” for this course: ABSU has never published one.
- Assuming accreditation: the course has NUC approval to start, not an accreditation result.
ABSU Film and Multimedia Studies: frequently asked questions
Can I choose Film and Multimedia Studies at ABSU on JAMB now? Not as of 29 October 2026. It was not on ABSU’s JAMB course list, so register Mass Communication and watch for ABSU’s guidelines.
What is the ABSU cut off mark for Film and Multimedia Studies 2027? ABSU has not set one. Its general minimum was 150 for 2026/2027, and I would aim for 190 or more.
Is ABSU Film and Multimedia Studies accredited by NUC? NUC approved it to start from 2026/2027, but it has no accreditation result yet. NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results have no ABSU line for it.
Do I need Mathematics for Film and Multimedia Studies? The general JAMB O’level line does not name it, but I would have at least a pass, since ABSU screens for five basic credits.
