The IMT Art and Design cut off mark is 100 in the UTME, JAMB’s national minimum for polytechnics for 2026/2027. The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, has not published a departmental figure for Art and Design, so 100 is the official floor before IMT will look at your application.
2027/2028 update: IMT cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
One thing confuses many candidates. JAMB lists the course as Art and Design, but JAMB’s own brochure notes that IMT offers it as Fine Art, and IMT’s 2024 admission notice called it Fine and Applied Arts (FAA). These are the same ND programme in IMT’s School of Art, Design and Printing Technology. You pick “Art and Design” under IMT on the JAMB portal, and the department you join at IMT will use the Fine Art name.
Further down are the 120 IMT used in 2024, my safe target score, the exact UTME subjects and O’level credits, IMT’s screening method, two worked examples and the CAPS steps.
IMT Art and Design cut off mark at a glance
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Status |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB minimum UTME score for polytechnics (applies to IMT) | 100 | Official (JAMB 2026 policy meeting, reported by NAN on 11 May 2026) |
| IMT’s own cut-off for Art and Design | Not published | No IMT departmental figure for 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 in any source I reached |
| My safe target score (advice) | 120 or higher; 140 is comfortable | Consultant advice, not an IMT rule |
| Name at IMT | Fine Art (also written Fine and Applied Arts) | JAMB brochure remark; IMT notice, March 2024 |
| School at IMT | School of Art, Design and Printing Technology | IMT Registrar notice, March 2024 |
| Level and award | National Diploma (ND), then HND | ND is the UTME entry point |
| Duration | 2 years full-time for ND | NBTE standard ND length |
| UTME subjects | English, Fine Art, and two of History, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology or a Nigerian language | JAMB brochure; no IMT UTME remark |
| O’level | Five credits including English, Fine Art and Mathematics, plus two from a list | JAMB brochure |
IMT cut-off mark history for Art and Design
IMT does not publish a separate cut-off mark for each ND course. What exists is the national floor JAMB sets for every polytechnic, and one threshold IMT itself used in 2024.
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics and monotechnics | Official (NAN, 11 May 2026) |
| 2025/2026 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics | Official (Nairametrics and Channels TV, 8 July 2025) |
| 2023/2024 | 120 | IMT’s threshold for its advertised courses round, which listed Fine and Applied Arts | Official IMT Registrar notices, March 2024 |
The 120 comes from two notices the IMT Registrar posted on imt.edu.ng in March 2024. They invited candidates from the 2023/2024 UTME who had scored 120 or more and had not yet been admitted to apply for courses that still had places. Fine and Applied Arts was on that list, alongside Printing Technology and Fashion and Design from the same school. No 2026/2027 IMT notice that I could open repeats the 120, so treat JAMB’s 100 as the floor and plan to clear 120 comfortably.
Safe target score for Art and Design at IMT (my advice)
IMT has never published a score band for Fine Art. The bands below are my judgement, based on how creative arts courses fill at state polytechnics in the South East and on IMT’s own 2024 notice, which offered spare Fine Art places to candidates with 120 or more. Use them for planning only.
| Your UTME score | My read for Art and Design at IMT |
|---|---|
| Below 100 | Not eligible for any polytechnic, IMT included |
| 100 to 114 | Eligible to apply; your Fine Art and English credits carry you |
| 115 to 129 | Possible |
| 130 to 139 | Competitive |
| 140 and above | Strong for Art and Design at IMT |
Fine Art draws fewer applicants than Mass Communication or the business courses, and the 2024 notice shows it did not always fill in the main round. In my reading that makes it one of the easier ND courses to enter at IMT, provided your subjects are right. For the 2027 UTME I would still aim for at least 120, ideally 140, because a higher score protects you if the department gets more applicants than usual.
Catchment and state of origin
IMT is owned by Enugu State, so Enugu indigenes are its home catchment, but it admits candidates from every state. IMT has not published a merit, catchment or quota split for its ND courses. Your UTME score, the core O’level credits and getting your documents in early count for more than your state of origin.
IMT Art and Design subject combination and O’level requirements
| Requirement | Art and Design (ND) at IMT |
|---|---|
| General UTME rule | Use of English, Fine Art, and any two of History, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and a Nigerian language |
| IMT remark (UTME) | None in the brochure |
| Combinations that fit IMT | English, Fine Art, Mathematics, Biology; English, Fine Art, History, Igbo; English, Fine Art, Chemistry, Mathematics, and similar pairs from the list |
| General O’level rule | Five credits including English Language, Fine Art and Mathematics, plus two of History or Government, Chemistry or Physical Science, Biology or Agricultural Science, Literature in English, Clothing and Textiles, Religious Knowledge, Economics or Commerce, Geography, Home Economics |
| IMT remark (O’level) | “IMT-ENU offers it as Fine Art” (a name note, no change to the subjects) |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB (SSCE or GCE), at most two sittings |
| Direct Entry | Not used for ND. HND entry is with a relevant ND through IMT’s HND form |
Fine Art is compulsory in both the UTME and O’level. Some polytechnics waive it (the brochure notes that Nekede does not insist on it), but IMT has no such remark, so you need Fine Art registered in the UTME and a credit in it at O’level.
The other trap is the two remaining UTME subjects. Many arts-class candidates register Literature in English and Government out of habit. Neither is on the Art and Design UTME list. The allowed options are History, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and a Nigerian language. Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa counts as the Nigerian language, which is good news for many Enugu candidates. Literature and Government can still help you at O’level, where they appear among the optional credits.
Direct Entry and HND
There is no Direct Entry into ND1, so every ND place goes through the UTME and CAPS. A reprinted IMT HND list, which I could not trace to an IMT page, shows HND Fine Arts with options in Painting and Sculpture, Graphic Design, Industrial Design and Printing Technology. IMT’s own 2019/2020 HND notice asked for a relevant ND with a CGPA of at least 2.50, or a lower CGPA backed by at least two years of verifiable industrial attachment, with a ₦5,000 form. Confirm the current terms on the portal. Our IMT HND admission requirements guide covers that route.
How IMT screens ND Art and Design candidates
IMT’s website links a notice titled “Call for 2026/2027 admission into ND and HND programs (regular and part-time)”, and applications run through the SLMS application page on portal.imt.edu.ng. I could not open the 2026/2027 call itself, so the newest confirmed details on how IMT screens ND candidates come from its official 2023/2024 notices. Those notices said IMT would hold no post-UTME examination for its diploma programmes that session and would admit on verified JAMB scores plus O’level results uploaded to CAPS.
| Detail | What we know | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Who applies | Candidates who chose IMT in the UTME and scored at least the JAMB minimum | Standard JAMB rule |
| Where | portal.imt.edu.ng (SLMS Application) | Confirmed link on imt.edu.ng |
| Form fee | ₦2,000 in 2023/2024 | Official IMT notice, March 2024; confirm the 2026/2027 fee on the portal |
| Payment | Interswitch at a bank under Enugu State IGR, or by card through IMT’s Quickteller link | Official IMT notice, March 2024 |
| Screening method | No post-UTME for diploma programmes in 2023/2024; admission on verified JAMB score and O’level on CAPS | Official for 2023/2024; IMT has not published the 2026/2027 method |
| Part-time option | Fine Art is not on IMT’s official part-time list | imt.edu.ng part-time page |
| Portfolio or drawing test | IMT has not published one for ND Fine Art | Ask the department; do not pay anyone for a “practical test” |
| Admission deadline for polytechnics (2026/2027 cycle) | Runs until 31 December 2026 | Official (JAMB, via NAN) |
| Time to accept an offer on CAPS | Four weeks | Official (JAMB, via NAN) |
Worked examples for Art and Design applicants
IMT has not published an aggregate formula for ND admission. Some blogs print one, but none cites an IMT document. These examples measure the gap between a UTME score, the national floor and my safe target, then check the subjects against the brochure.
Take Ebuka, who scored 127 in English, Fine Art, Mathematics and Igbo. From one WAEC sitting he has C4 in English, B3 in Fine Art, C6 in Mathematics, C5 in Literature in English, C5 in Government, C6 in Biology and B2 in Igbo.
- Eligibility: 127 minus 100 = 27. He is clear of JAMB’s polytechnic minimum.
- Against my safe target: 127 minus 120 = 7. He is in the possible band, close to competitive.
- UTME subjects: Fine Art is there, and Mathematics and Igbo (a Nigerian language) are both on the list.
- O’level: English, Fine Art and Mathematics are the fixed credits. Literature and Government (as the History or Government option) fill the last two places, with Biology as a spare.
- What I would advise: keep Art and Design at IMT, upload the result to CAPS early and fill the form as soon as it opens.
Notice one detail in Ebuka’s case. Igbo is fine as a UTME subject for this course, but a Nigerian language is not in the general list of optional O’level credits, so his B2 in Igbo does not count toward the five. Check every subject against both lists separately.
Nneka scored 162 with English, Fine Art, Literature in English and Government. Her score is excellent, but both of her last two subjects are outside the Art and Design list, and IMT has no waiver for them, so IMT cannot recommend her for this course on CAPS however high she scored. She has two honest options: a change of course to one whose UTME rule fits her subjects, such as Mass Communication if her O’level also fits, or a fresh UTME with the right combination.
How to apply for Art and Design at IMT, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Confirm the course on IMT’s list: Art and Design is on IMT’s course list in JAMB’s brochure as reprinted by Myschool. Open the IMT Enugu entry on JAMB’s e-brochure when you register and check it still shows.
- Register for the UTME: Choose Art and Design under IMT Enugu, register English, Fine Art and two of History, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology or a Nigerian language, and pick IMT as your polytechnic choice. If you picked another school first, a JAMB change of institution is possible before IMT closes its form, and a JAMB change of course fixes a wrong course.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: go to an accredited CBT centre and have your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result uploaded. IMT’s 2023/2024 notices made this upload part of the admission decision, and no school can recommend you on CAPS without it.
- Fill IMT’s application form: when the admission call appears on imt.edu.ng, open portal.imt.edu.ng, click Apply, fill the form, choose Interswitch to generate an invoice, pay and print the acknowledgement slip. Use an email address and phone number you check daily.
- Check your status: use the admission checker on the IMT portal, then log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status and open CAPS.
- Accept within four weeks: JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept 2026 offers. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains every status you might see.
- Pay acceptance and clear: blogs put IMT’s acceptance fee at ₦25,000, but IMT has not published it in any source I reached. Pay only against an invoice generated on the IMT portal.
Warning
Every genuine IMT offer appears on JAMB CAPS. Anyone selling an “IMT Fine Art slot” or a place on a special list is outside the process. Pay fees only through invoices generated on portal.imt.edu.ng.
Your chances of getting Art and Design at IMT
JAMB’s 100 only gets you to the starting line. For Art and Design the subject rule is the first filter, because Fine Art is fixed in both exams and Literature or Government cannot fill the UTME slots. Once your subjects are right, the deciding factors are your UTME score and clean credits in English, Fine Art and Mathematics.
IMT’s 2024 advertised courses notice listed Fine and Applied Arts among the courses with places still open after the main round, for candidates with 120 or more. That tells me the course does not always fill from first-choice applicants. A candidate around 120 to 130 with the right subjects and complete documents has a fair chance, and a candidate who misses the main round should watch imt.edu.ng for a similar notice.
Fine Art is not on IMT’s part-time list, so there is no evening route into this course in the sources I checked. Plan for the full-time ND.
Studying Art and Design at IMT Enugu
ND Fine Art trains you to draw, paint, model and design for real clients: book covers, signs, murals, logos, sculpture, packaging and exhibition work. Enugu has a long art tradition, and polytechnic art graduates often move into graphic design studios, advertising and printing firms, or set up on their own.
What you study
IMT has not put its Fine Art course outline online, so the list below describes what ND art and design programmes generally cover in Nigerian polytechnics. Ask the department for its own outline at registration.
- Drawing: life drawing, still life and perspective.
- Painting: colour, composition, oil, acrylic and watercolour.
- Sculpture and modelling: clay, plaster, wood and found materials.
- Graphic design: lettering, layout, logos and posters, by hand and on computer.
- Art history: Nigerian, African and world art traditions.
- Crafts and materials: textiles, ceramics and printmaking basics.
- Practical work: studio projects, an exhibition and a SIWES placement.
Accreditation
At IMT’s Global Homecoming on 13 June 2026, the Rector, Prof. Sunday Gozie Ogbodo, said all courses offered by IMT are now fully accredited, after more than 70% of programmes had lost accreditation by the time he took office in 2024. An NBTE accreditation team visited in November 2025. NBTE has not published a programme-by-programme result for Art and Design at IMT that I could find, so its individual status is not confirmed. There is no licensing council for fine artists in Nigeria. The Society of Nigerian Artists is the main professional body, and advertising designers who work on adverts should know that advertising practice is regulated by the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria. Ask the department to show the current accreditation letter during clearance if this matters to you.

Mistakes that cost Art and Design applicants an IMT place
- Treating 100 as admission: it only makes you eligible to apply.
- No Fine Art in the UTME: IMT has no waiver for it.
- Literature or Government as UTME subjects: they are not on the list for this course.
- Missing a credit in Fine Art or Mathematics: both are fixed O’level credits with English.
- Searching for “Fine Art” on the JAMB portal: the JAMB name is Art and Design.
- No O’level upload on CAPS: IMT’s 2023/2024 notices admitted on JAMB score and uploaded O’level together.
IMT Art and Design cut off mark: frequently asked questions
What is the IMT cut off mark for Fine Art? It is 100, JAMB’s 2026 minimum for polytechnics. IMT has not published a separate figure for Fine Art (Art and Design on JAMB), so I would aim for 120 or more.
Can I study Fine Art in IMT without Fine Art in WAEC? No. The brochure makes a credit in Fine Art compulsory at O’level for this course, and IMT has no waiver for it.
Is Literature in English accepted for Art and Design in IMT JAMB subjects? No. The UTME options are History, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and a Nigerian language, alongside English and Fine Art. Literature only helps at O’level.
Does IMT offer Fine Art part time? Not according to IMT’s official part-time page, which does not list it. The ND is full-time through the UTME and CAPS.
Sources and updates
The 100 minimum for polytechnics in 2026, the 31 December 2026 admission deadline for the 2026/2027 cycle and the four-week acceptance window come from the News Agency of Nigeria report of JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026). The 2025 minimum of 100 is from Nairametrics and Channels TV (8 July 2025). The UTME subjects, the O’level list and any IMT remark come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Art and Design, and the course’s place on IMT’s list from Myschool’s IMT Enugu course list, both checked on 29 October 2026. The 120 threshold, the ₦2,000 form fee, the payment channels, the 2024 list of advertised courses and the no post-UTME rule for 2023/2024 are from IMT Registrar notices on imt.edu.ng dated 4 March 2024 and 22 March 2024. The HND entry rule is from IMT’s 2019/2020 HND notice. The part-time list is from IMT’s part-time programmes page. The HND Fine Arts options are from a reprinted IMT HND list and should be confirmed with IMT. The accreditation remarks are from BusinessDay (13 June 2026). The ₦25,000 acceptance fee is from blogs and is unofficial, and the safe target scores are my advice. This page will be updated when IMT publishes its 2027/2028 admission notice.
