ATCOI English and Igbo (NCE) Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 & Admission Requirements

ATCOI has not published a cut-off mark for NCE English or Igbo, and NCE candidates with four credits no longer sit the UTME. See the English and Igbo pairings, O’level subjects, JAMB NCE fees and CAPS steps for 2027/2028.

There is no published ATCOI cut off mark for English or Igbo for 2027/2028, and NCE candidates with at least four O’level credits no longer write the UTME. African Thinkers Community of Inquiry College of Education (ATCOI), Enugu, is listed by JAMB for English as a double major, English / Igbo, and English or Igbo paired with Social Studies, Political Science, Economics or Christian Religious Studies. You still register with JAMB for NCE and accept your offer on CAPS. For these courses, your English Language credit comes first, and an Igbo credit if you want to teach Igbo.

2027/2028 update: ATCOI admission requirements and entry rules usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the position on this page is what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. It comes from the latest official position (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 rules change anything, we will update this page.

I could not find any ATCOI notice that sets a cut-off, a departmental minimum or a screening score for English and Igbo. So this page sticks to what is on record: JAMB’s national rules, JAMB’s course list for the college, the NCCE listing and the registration steps JAMB published for NCE in 2026. Where I give my own advice, such as a safe O’level target, I say so.

I searched for an ATCOI admission notice for 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 and found none, either on a college page or reprinted on the usual education news sites. So the only figures on record are national ones. The 100 mark was JAMB’s floor for every college of education in 2025/2026. For 2026/2027, JAMB announced no numeric minimum for colleges of education at all, because NCE candidates with four credits were taken out of the UTME. Anyone quoting a departmental English and Igbo cut-off for ATCOI is guessing.

Do you need JAMB or UTME for English and Igbo at ATCOI?

You need JAMB. You do not need the UTME, as long as you hold at least four O’level credit passes. Three official statements in 2026 set this out:

  • 11 May 2026: at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said NCE candidates with a minimum of four credit passes will no longer sit the UTME. They must still register with JAMB, and their credentials are screened through CAPS before any admission letter is issued.
  • June 2026: JAMB’s NCE registration guide set the fees and the CAPS steps. It also said there is no 100 level or 200 level degree admission into any college of education from 2026/2027, affiliated degrees included. Everyone who enters a college of education now enters through NCE.
  • 23 July 2026: NCE registration without UTME opened at Institutional Professional Registration Centres (IPRCs) in colleges of education and at JAMB professional registration centres.

There is one timing difference between reports. Nairametrics wrote on 11 May 2026 that the exemption would apply from the 2027 admission cycle, while JAMB’s June 2026 guide and Legit’s report of 23 July 2026 show it was already in use for 2026. For a 2027/2028 candidate the two readings agree: if you are applying for NCE, you do not write the UTME.

What JAMB charges for NCE registration

ItemAmountWho pays it
O’level verification code, one sitting₦1,500Every NCE applicant (bought from the exam body)
O’level verification code, two sittings₦2,000Applicants combining two results
JAMB NCE application fee₦3,500New NCE applicants who did not register for the 2026 UTME
CBT or IPRC centre charge₦700Every NCE applicant
Moving a 2026 UTME application to NCE₦700 onlyUTME candidates whose first choice was a college of education

These are JAMB’s 2026/2027 amounts, and the 2027/2028 guide may change them, so confirm at the centre before you pay. If ATCOI sells its own screening form, that is a separate charge the college has not published.

The English and Igbo combinations on JAMB’s list for ATCOI

These are the English and Igbo entries in Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s course list for ATCOI, written as JAMB writes them:

Combination (as on JAMB’s list)Credits I would have, besides English Language and MathematicsWho it suits
English (Double Major)Literature in English, one more arts subjectCandidates who want to teach English only
English / IgboIgbo, Literature in EnglishCandidates who read and write Igbo well
Economics / EnglishEconomics, Literature or GovernmentCandidates from a commercial or mixed class
English / Social StudiesLiterature, Government or Civic EducationArts and social science candidates
English / Political ScienceGovernment, LiteratureCandidates who enjoy government and current affairs
Christian Religious Studies / EnglishCRS, LiteratureCandidates who want to teach English and CRS
Igbo / Social StudiesIgbo, Government or Civic EducationIgbo speakers drawn to social studies
Igbo / Political ScienceIgbo, GovernmentIgbo speakers drawn to government

A few points about this list. There is no Igbo double major, no French and no Literature in English as a teaching subject at ATCOI. Igbo is only available paired with English, Social Studies or Political Science. The list also has an “English / Ecunemics” entry. Ecumenics (spelt that way elsewhere on the same list) appears in three other ATCOI combinations, which suggests it is a real subject at the college and not a typo. ATCOI has not described it, so ask the college what it covers before choosing it.

O’level requirements and UTME subjects for English and Igbo at ATCOI

RequirementEnglish and Igbo at ATCOI
UTMENot required for NCE candidates with at least four credits (2026 policy)
O’level (federal exemption rule)At least four credit passes; subjects not specified
O’level (ATCOI’s own rule)Not published in any source reached
O’level (usual college of education rule)Five credits at no more than two sittings, including English Language and Mathematics, with credits in the subjects you will teach (general practice; not confirmed for ATCOI)
JAMB brochure line for English / Igbo (college of education entry)O’level: five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English, Igbo Language and any other arts subject. UTME: Igbo, Literature in English and any arts subject
Other English pairingsNo brochure line checked. JAMB’s usual pattern is English Language, Mathematics and both teaching subjects among the five credits; confirm on the JAMB e-brochure
Results JAMB acceptsWAEC, NECO, NABTEB and NBAIS, checked with a verification code
Awaiting resultsYou cannot be proposed on CAPS until the result is uploaded
Direct Entry or 200 levelNot available at any college of education from 2026/2027; NCE is the only entry

The English / Igbo line comes from Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s college of education entry, which does not name ATCOI. Two things in it surprise arts candidates: Mathematics is listed, and so is Literature in English. If you lack either, you can still register under the four-credit rule, but ask the college whether it will consider you.

UTME subjects only matter if you also write the UTME for a university place. For the NCE route, the college compares O’level results.

Safe target for English and Igbo at ATCOI (my advice)

This is my judgement as an admissions adviser. ATCOI has not published how it ranks NCE applicants, so your grades in English Language and your teaching subjects do the job a UTME score used to do.

Your O’level positionMy read for ATCOI English and Igbo
Fewer than four creditsNot eligible for the no-UTME route; resit first
Four or more credits, but English Language below C6Not workable for any English combination
Five credits including English, Mathematics and your teaching subjects, two sittingsMeets the usual college standard
Five or more credits in one sitting, with B grades in English and Literature (and Igbo, for an Igbo pairing)Strong. This is what I would aim for

If you also plan to write the 2027 UTME for a university English or Igbo course, aim for at least 150, the 2026 national minimum for universities. JAMB will not process you for the UTME and NCE routes at the same time.

Worked example for an English or Igbo applicant (illustrative)

ATCOI has not published any aggregate formula, so there is no score to compute. Both candidates below are made up.

Nneka has one WAEC sitting: English Language B3, Mathematics C6, Literature in English B2, Igbo B3, CRS C4, Government C5 and Biology D7. She wants English / Igbo.

  • Credit count: six credits, above the four-credit exemption rule.
  • Five-credit check: English and Mathematics are there, in one sitting.
  • Subject check: Literature B2 and Igbo B3 meet the English / Igbo brochure line, with CRS and Government as further arts credits.
  • Process: WAEC verification code (₦1,500), NCE registration with ATCOI as first choice (₦3,500 plus ₦700), then the CAPS proposal and the Provost’s recommendation.

Uchenna has English Language C5, Government C4, Economics C6, Civic Education B3 and Igbo C6, but Mathematics E8. He meets the four-credit rule and fits Igbo / Political Science on paper. The usual college rule and the brochure line both list Mathematics, so I would tell him to ask ATCOI directly, and to resit Mathematics while he waits.

Your chances of admission into English and Igbo at ATCOI

ATCOI does not publish applicant numbers or quotas for each combination. My guess is that the English pairings attract more applicants than the Igbo ones, since fewer candidates hold an Igbo credit, but the college has published no figures. In my judgement, a candidate with good English and Literature grades, and an Igbo credit for an Igbo pairing, is well placed.

  • Make ATCOI your first choice. JAMB sends each NCE registration to the first-choice college.
  • Pick the combination by its exact name on JAMB’s list. Several entries look alike, and the college admits into the one you chose.
  • Get the verification code right. CAPS compares it with the exam body’s record, and a mismatch stops you.
  • Avoid Awaiting Result if you can. You cannot be proposed until the result is uploaded.
  • Keep checking CAPS. The offer appears there and is not valid until you accept it.

How to apply for English and Igbo at ATCOI, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Buy your O’level verification code: from WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or NBAIS. JAMB lists ₦1,500 for one sitting and ₦2,000 for two. Copy the exam year, exam number and subjects exactly as they appear on your result.
  3. Register for NCE at a JAMB centre or IPRC: pay ₦3,500 plus the ₦700 centre charge, choose African Thinkers Community of Inquiry College of Education, Enugu as your first choice and pick your English and Igbo combination by its exact name on JAMB’s list. Your biometrics are captured and you get a slip.
  4. Make sure your O’level is on CAPS: your result and verification code must be uploaded, because CAPS checks them against the exam body’s record. A candidate marked Awaiting Result cannot be proposed until the result is uploaded.
  5. Already registered for UTME? If a college of education was your first choice, JAMB moves you to NCE and you pay ₦700 only. Once you are recommended for NCE, your UTME process is suspended, so you cannot run both routes at once.
  6. Fill ATCOI’s own form if it asks for one: the college has not published a portal, a form price or screening dates in any source I reached. NCCE lists www.atcoicoe.edu.ng as its website, but I could not open it. Confirm with the college in Enugu before you pay anyone.
  7. Wait for the proposal and recommendation: under JAMB’s guide, the college proposes you on CAPS, the Provost recommends you, and JAMB then checks your O’level before the offer shows.
  8. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. JAMB says offers not accepted within four weeks can be withdrawn. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  9. Pay the acceptance fee and register: ATCOI has not published its acceptance or school fees. Pay only through the channel on your admission letter or an official college notice.

If you are still chasing a 2026/2027 place, JAMB set 31 December 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for colleges of education, and that date has not yet passed. Candidates planning for 2027/2028 should watch for JAMB’s next NCE registration notice and register with ATCOI as first choice from the start.

Warning

The Federal Government has said any admission done outside JAMB CAPS is illegal. If someone offers you an ATCOI place that never shows on CAPS, or asks for money to “process” one, do not pay.

About African Thinkers Community of Inquiry College of Education (ATCOI), Enugu

ATCOI is a private college of education in Enugu State. It appears on the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) list of accredited colleges as “African Thinkers Community of Inquiry College of Education, Enugu”, shown as open, with Obozuhuike Ofoelue named as Provost and www.atcoicoe.edu.ng given as its website. The list does not give a street address, phone number or founding year, and I found none on any official page, so ask for directions before you travel.

The same NCCE list has a separate entry, “Institute of Ecumenical Education (Thinkers Corner)”, in Enugu, under NTI and other NCE awarding institutions. The names suggest a link, but no source I reached says how the two are related. Treat them as two different listings and make sure the form you buy is for the college you chose on JAMB.

Because JAMB has stopped new degree admissions into colleges of education from 2026/2027, plan to take any degree at a university after your NCE. A blog or agent offering you an ATCOI degree place for 2027/2028 is offering something JAMB no longer allows.

Accreditation

NCE courses are regulated by the NCCE. ATCOI is on the NCCE accredited list, but I could not confirm the accreditation status of each English and Igbo combination, so I am not claiming it. Ask the college for the current NCCE status of your exact combination before you accept an offer.

Studying NCE English and Igbo at ATCOI

The Nigeria Certificate in Education normally takes three years full time. ATCOI has not published course outlines, so the list below describes what these NCE subjects usually cover.

  • English: English grammar and usage, phonetics and oral English, composition, and literature in English.
  • Igbo: Igbo grammar and orthography, oral and written literature, and Igbo culture.
  • Your partner subject: Social Studies, Political Science, Economics or CRS, studied in full if you chose a pairing.
  • Education courses: educational psychology, curriculum studies, general studies and methods of teaching English and Igbo.
  • Teaching practice: supervised teaching in a school, usually in the final year.

Careers and further study

  • Teaching: English, Igbo and your partner subject in primary and junior secondary schools. The NCE is Nigeria’s minimum teaching qualification.
  • Registration: with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) after graduation.
  • Other work: editing and proofreading, translation and interpreting in Igbo, broadcasting and media assistant roles.
  • Degree later: a B.A. (Ed) English or Igbo at a university, which opens senior secondary teaching.

If ATCOI is not yet your first choice on JAMB, read JAMB change of institution. If you registered for a different course, see JAMB change of course.

Mistakes that cost English and Igbo applicants an ATCOI place

  • Looking for an Igbo double major or French: neither is on JAMB’s list for ATCOI.
  • Ignoring Mathematics: it appears in the usual college rule and the English / Igbo brochure line.
  • Choosing the Ecumenics pairing without asking what it is: the college has not described the subject.
  • Writing UTME and waiting for a score: NCE candidates with four credits do not need one.
  • Paying for a form from an unverified link: the college has not published a portal in any source reached.

ATCOI English and Igbo cut off mark: frequently asked questions

What is the cut off mark for English in ATCOI? ATCOI has not published one for English or Igbo. The national minimum for colleges of education was 100 in 2025/2026, and from 2026/2027 NCE candidates with four credits do not need a UTME score.

Do I need Mathematics to study English/Igbo at ATCOI? JAMB’s brochure line for English / Igbo lists Mathematics among the five credits, and most colleges of education ask for it. ATCOI has not published its own rule, so ask the college if you lack it.

Can I study Igbo alone at ATCOI? No. JAMB’s list for the college has no Igbo double major. Igbo is paired with English, Social Studies or Political Science.

Can I apply to ATCOI after the JAMB NCE registration? Your JAMB NCE registration with ATCOI as first choice is the application JAMB recognises. The college may also sell its own form, but it has not published one in any source reached, so confirm with the college before paying.
