GOUNI Cut-Off Mark for Law 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

GOUNI’s cut-off mark for Law is 200, with a ₦5,000 form and Council of Legal Education approval. See the official figure, a safe target score, JAMB subject rules, the online application and accreditation.

The GOUNI cut off mark for Law is 200 in the UTME. Godfrey Okoye University, the Catholic private university at Thinkers Corner, Enugu, published that figure on its official 2026/2027 admission form page. Law and Medicine share GOUNI’s highest minimum, Nursing needs 180, and every other GOUNI course needs 150, which is also JAMB’s national minimum for universities.

2027/2028 update: GOUNI cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

GOUNI’s Law degree is on the Council of Legal Education’s August 2026 list of approved law faculties, which is the approval that lets graduates go on to the Nigerian Law School. The application form for Law costs ₦5,000, and GOUNI describes an online process with a decision sent by e-mail. Below are the official figures, a safe target score (my advice), the JAMB subject rules, which differ from what many blogs say, the application steps and the accreditation record.

Law is on JAMB’s course list for GOUNI and on GOUNI’s 2026/2027 list of available programmes, under the Faculty of Law. On JAMB, register it simply as Law.

Is 200 the real GOUNI Law cut-off?

200 is the minimum. GOUNI’s 2026/2027 list of minimum JAMB scores names Law at 200, the same as Medicine and Surgery, and AbsTechConnect repeated the figure on 24 May 2026. GOUNI publishes no merit list, so the score of the last candidate admitted is unknown.

Law is the most requested arts course in most Nigerian universities. At a private university the competition is softer than at UNN or ESUT, but the Council of Legal Education’s quota system limits how many students each faculty can admit. CLE’s August 2026 list does not print quotas, and GOUNI has not published its own, so plan as if seats are limited.

Safe target score for GOUNI Law (my advice)

These bands are my judgement as an admissions adviser.

Your UTME scoreMy read for GOUNI Law
Below 200Not eligible for Law at GOUNI this session
200 to 214Eligible; apply early and keep a second plan
215 to 239Competitive at a private law faculty
240 and aboveStrong. This is the range I would aim for

For the 2027 UTME, I would aim for at least 220, ideally 240, with credits in English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics. A score near 240 also keeps public options open, such as UNN Law and ESUT Law.

GOUNI is private, so there is no catchment or state-of-origin quota.

UTME subject combination and O’level for GOUNI Law

RequirementLaw at GOUNI
UTME subjectsUse of English plus any three Arts or Social Science subjects
O’levelFive credits including English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics
GOUNI’s own ruleFive credits in the course’s required subjects, including English and Mathematics
SittingsNo GOUNI rule in the brochure; one sitting is the safer plan
Direct Entry (JAMB general rule)Two A-level passes in Arts or Social Science subjects, or NCE, ND or a first degree (second class lower)
GOUNI Direct Entry noteApply with the current JAMB Direct Entry form
JUPEB combination at GOUNIGovernment, Literature in English and CRS or Economics

Many blogs say Law needs Literature in English in the UTME. JAMB’s general rule is wider: any three Arts or Social Science subjects. Several universities, including UNN, UNIBEN and OAU, add their own Literature requirement, but the brochure has no remark for GOUNI. Even so, I would sit Literature in English, Government and CRS or Economics, because that combination fits every law faculty’s rule and keeps your options open if you change institution.

Literature matters more at O’level. JAMB’s general rule names English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics as compulsory credits for Law, and GOUNI’s own page also insists on English and Mathematics. A candidate without a Literature credit is the most common reject.

How GOUNI screening works for Law

GOUNI’s 2026/2027 admission page does not describe a written Post-UTME test. You apply online, and GOUNI says it replies by e-mail within three working days.

Worked example for a Law applicant

There is no published aggregate formula and no test, so the sums are about your margin above 200 and above a safe target.

Take Tobenna, who scored 226 in English, Literature in English, Government and CRS, with B2 in English Language, B3 in Literature, C4 in Mathematics, B2 in Government and A1 in CRS from one sitting.

  1. Eligibility: 226 minus 200 = 26. He clears GOUNI’s Law minimum by 26 marks.
  2. Against my safe target: 226 is in my competitive band and 14 short of 240.
  3. O’level check: English, Literature and Mathematics credits are all there, plus two Arts subjects. Nothing rules him out.
  4. What I would advise: apply early, pay the ₦5,000 only on GOUNI’s platform and reply to the Admissions Officer’s e-mail quickly.

Adaeze scored 241 but has a pass (D7) in Literature in English. Her score is strong, yet she misses JAMB’s O’level rule for Law. Before paying, she should ask GOUNI admissions whether it accepts her result. If it does not, she could apply for a 150 course such as International Relations or Political Science, or resit Literature.

How to apply for Law at GOUNI, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the right course: pick Godfrey Okoye University and the course exactly as JAMB lists it, Law, with the correct UTME subjects.
  3. Fix your choice if needed: GOUNI says candidates who did not choose it first must do a JAMB change of institution to GOUNI. Our change of institution guide walks you through it.
  4. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB-accredited centre, and check that every grade shows correctly on your e-Facility profile.
  5. Fill GOUNI’s online form: open the Fill Admission Form page on gouni.edu.ng and apply for Law. Use an e-mail address you check daily, because the decision comes by e-mail.
  6. Form fee: Law attracts a ₦5,000 form fee. Pay it only through GOUNI’s online payment platform.
  7. Wait for the e-mail: GOUNI says it replies within three working days of submission.
  8. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  9. Pay fees the right way: for Law, do not pay tuition until the Admissions Officer e-mails you with instructions. Then pay through GOUNI’s official platform and keep every receipt.

Warning

GOUNI tells applicants to pay only through the university’s official online payment platform and says money paid into a personal account is at the payer’s own risk. Nobody can sell you a GOUNI admission slot. Every genuine offer shows on JAMB CAPS.

For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 30 November 2026 as the admission deadline for private universities, and GOUNI repeated that date in its own news post of 12 May 2026. Public universities had 31 October 2026. JAMB has not yet announced the 2027/2028 dates, so watch for them after the 2027 UTME.

Studying Law at GOUNI

GOUNI runs Law in its Faculty of Law at the Thinkers Corner campus in Enugu. The degree is the LL.B., which in Nigeria runs for five years and is followed by one year at the Nigerian Law School before call to the Bar.

Accreditation

BodyWhat the record shows
Council of Legal Education (CLE)Godfrey Okoye University is serial 49 on CLE’s public notice of approved law faculties, 14 August 2026. No moratorium remark against GOUNI.
National Universities Commission (NUC)Myschool reported on 9 August 2021 that NUC gave full accreditation to 13 GOUNI programmes, including Law, and that the Law Faculty scored 93.9%.
GOUNI accreditation pageSays all its programmes have NUC accreditation and the Law faculty has CLE approval.

NUC full accreditation normally lasts five years, so the 2021 result would fall due for review around 2026. I did not find a newer NUC report for GOUNI Law, so I can’t confirm the current cycle. The CLE listing from August 2026 is the more recent record, and it is the one the Nigerian Law School relies on.

What you study

  • Early years: Nigerian legal system, legal methods, constitutional law and contract.
  • Middle years: criminal law, torts, land law, equity and trusts, commercial law and the law of evidence.
  • Final year: jurisprudence, a long essay and electives such as international law, oil and gas law or human rights.
  • After the LL.B.: Nigerian Law School, Bar Finals, call to the Bar and NYSC.

Careers include private legal practice, corporate legal departments, banking and compliance, the judiciary, public service, NGOs and academic law.

Mistakes that cost Law applicants a GOUNI place

  • No Literature credit at O’level: JAMB’s general rule for Law requires it.
  • Treating 200 as a guaranteed place: it is the minimum to apply.
  • Leaving GOUNI as second choice: GOUNI asks for a change of institution.
  • O’level missing on CAPS: JAMB cannot process the admission without it.
  • Paying tuition before the Admissions Officer’s e-mail: GOUNI tells Law applicants to wait.
  • Paying into personal accounts: GOUNI disowns such payments.

If you are trying again in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
