MOUAU Cut-Off Mark for Guidance and Counselling 2027/2028: Requirements, Subject Combination and Screening

MOUAU’s minimum for Guidance and Counselling is 150 in the UTME with MOUAU first choice. See the JAMB subjects, O’level and Direct Entry rules, a safe target score, screening and CAPS steps for 2027/2028.

The MOUAU cut off mark for Guidance and Counselling is 150 in the UTME, with Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) as your first choice. MOUAU set that one minimum for every course in its 2026/2027 screening notice and published no separate figure for Guidance and Counselling.

2027/2028 update: MOUAU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

150 makes you eligible for screening, and your rank among applicants decides the rest. This page gives the official figures, a safe target score (my advice), the JAMB subjects and O’level rules, Direct Entry, how MOUAU screens, a worked example and the CAPS steps, plus what MOUAU has not published about the course.

Guidance and Counselling is a department in its own right on MOUAU’s official list, separate from Educational Management and Adult Education. MOUAU still published only the university-wide 150. I found no MOUAU document behind the higher “departmental” figures that some blogs print.

Safe target score for Guidance and Counselling at MOUAU (my advice)

MOUAU does not publish the score of the last candidate admitted into each course, so this table is my judgement as an admissions adviser. It is not a MOUAU rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for MOUAU Guidance and Counselling
Below 150Not eligible for any MOUAU course
150 to 164Eligible to register; admission depends on O’level grades and sittings
165 to 184Reasonable chance with good credits from one sitting
185 and aboveStrong. This is the range I would aim for.

For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 175, with credits in English, Mathematics, Biology and two other subjects from one sitting. Counselling courses attract many candidates who did not get their first-choice course elsewhere, so a few extra marks give you room if MOUAU’s intake fills quickly.

Catchment and merit

MOUAU is a federal university, so its admissions follow the federal guidelines that mix merit, catchment and educationally less developed states. MOUAU has not published its own split or a list of catchment states for 2026/2027. Do not count on catchment to rescue a weak score; your UTME result and your O’level grades from one sitting are the parts you control.

UTME subject combination and O’level for MOUAU Guidance and Counselling

RequirementGuidance and Counselling at MOUAU
UTME subjects (general entry)Use of English plus any three subjects
O’level (general entry)Five credits including English Language, with at least a pass in Mathematics
MOUAU remarkNone found on the Guidance and Counselling entries
What I would presentFive credits including English Language, Mathematics and Biology, from one sitting
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO, NABTEB
SittingsMOUAU weights the number of sittings, so one sitting is safer
Awaiting resultsRegister for MOUAU screening only after your result is out

The JAMB brochure entry for Guidance and Counselling, as reprinted by Myschool, sets the general UTME rule as any three subjects with Use of English. Its general O’level line asks for five credits including English Language and only a pass in Mathematics. MOUAU has no remark on that entry or on the Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling entry, so I cannot tell you MOUAU accepts a Mathematics pass.

Several universities on the same entry go further: some ask for a Mathematics credit, and others ask for Biology, since counselling draws on psychology and human development. Given that, I would present five credits including English, Mathematics and Biology, and confirm MOUAU’s current line on your JAMB e-brochure before you register.

Direct Entry

The general Direct Entry line accepts A-level passes or an NCE in two subjects, together with the UTME O’level requirements. Several universities on the entry accept NCE holders at merit level; MOUAU has no remark on the entry and its 2026/2027 notice gave no separate Direct Entry procedure. If you hold an NCE, ask the department whether it admits Direct Entry candidates into this course and at what level.

Does the 2026 NCE exemption apply to this course?

No. At its policy meeting of 11 May 2026, JAMB exempted NCE programmes at colleges of education from the UTME. Nairametrics reported that the change starts with the 2027 admission cycle, while JAMB’s own NCE registration guide (June 2026) shows it already running in 2026. Either way it covers the NCE only. A degree in education at a university such as MOUAU still needs the UTME, MOUAU as first choice and the 150 minimum. The same JAMB guide also says colleges of education stop taking 100-level or 200-level degree students from 2026/2027, so candidates who wanted an affiliated degree at a college now have to look at universities like MOUAU or start with an NCE.

How MOUAU screening works for Guidance and Counselling

MOUAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice, signed by the Registrar, Dr (Mrs) Nkeiruka Charity Mbanasor, was reprinted by Myschool on 20 June 2026. I could not open the original on mouau.edu.ng, so treat these details as a faithful reprint and not the source document.

Nothing in the notice says MOUAU set a written Post-UTME test for 2026/2027, so I won’t tell you one was held. After you register, check the portal regularly; MOUAU said screening results and admission status would appear there.

Worked example for a Guidance and Counselling candidate

MOUAU has not published an aggregate formula. To show how UTME and O’level interact, here is an illustrative method many Nigerian universities use: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points), plus O’level points for five relevant subjects with A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not MOUAU’s formula.

  1. Chiamaka scored 176 with B3 in English, C4 in Mathematics, B2 in Biology, B3 in Economics and B3 in Government from one sitting. UTME points: 176 ÷ 8 = 22. O’level points: 8 + 7 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 40. Illustrative total: 62.
  2. Uchenna scored 189 with C5 in English, a D7 pass in Mathematics, C6 in Biology, C5 in CRS and C4 in Government over two sittings. UTME points: 189 ÷ 8 = 23.63. For O’level points I give only the four credits: 6 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 24. Illustrative total: 47.63.
  3. The gap: 62 minus 47.63 = 14.37 points in Chiamaka’s favour. Uchenna’s Mathematics pass may meet the general entry, but if MOUAU wants a credit he could be screened out entirely.

That uncertainty is the reason I advise a Mathematics credit for this course at MOUAU. Do not rely on a waiver MOUAU has not published.

How to apply for Guidance and Counselling at MOUAU, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME correctly: choose Guidance and Counselling at MOUAU with Use of English plus three subjects you are strong in (a mix such as Biology, Economics and Government works well), and make MOUAU your first choice. If you already registered for another school, do a JAMB change of institution before MOUAU’s screening opens.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at an accredited JAMB CBT centre as soon as your result is out. MOUAU weights your grades and sittings, so upload your best single sitting.
  4. Register on the MOUAU portal: when screening opens, go to portal.mouau.edu.ng, fill in your details and generate the Remita invoice.
  5. Pay ₦2,000: by card or cash at any bank through Remita. Keep the RRR number and the receipt.
  6. Check the portal for results: MOUAU posts screening outcomes and admission status there; no test date was published for 2026/2027.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks to accept. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: MOUAU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Get the amount from your portal invoice and pay only through it.

Warning

Every genuine MOUAU offer appears on JAMB CAPS, and JAMB said in May 2026 that admissions outside CAPS are illegal. Anyone selling a MOUAU “slot” is selling something that does not exist, so pay only through the MOUAU portal invoice.

For 2026/2027, JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the date public universities should finish admissions. If you applied, look at CAPS now instead of waiting for a printed list.

Studying Guidance and Counselling at MOUAU

Guidance and Counselling is one of nine departments MOUAU lists under its College of Education (COED) at Umudike, about 10 km from Umuahia in Abia State. MOUAU is a federal university of agriculture established by federal decree in November 1992. The course trains counsellors for schools and other settings where people need help with learning, careers and personal problems.

What you study

  • Psychology: developmental, educational and social psychology, and theories of personality.
  • Counselling theory and skills: counselling approaches, interviewing, group counselling and ethics.
  • Assessment: psychological testing, measurement and evaluation, and career assessment.
  • Applied areas: career and vocational guidance, marriage and family counselling, and rehabilitation.
  • Practice: supervised counselling practicum and teaching practice in schools.

Degree title, duration and accreditation

MOUAU’s official department list confirms Guidance and Counselling under COED. The degree title (B.Sc (Ed) or B.Ed) was not stated in any official source I reached. Education degrees in Nigeria usually run for four years through UTME, but MOUAU has not confirmed this for the course in what I found. No NUC accreditation status for the programme appeared in the sources I checked, so I am not claiming one; ask the department before you accept an offer. Graduates who want to teach in Nigerian schools also need to register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) after graduation. Practising counsellors in Nigeria often join the Counselling Association of Nigeria (CASSON).

Careers

  • School counsellor in secondary schools, a role many state education boards fund.
  • Career guidance and student support in universities, polytechnics and colleges.
  • Counselling in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, prisons and social welfare services.
  • Human resources, staff welfare and employee assistance roles.
  • Postgraduate study in counselling or educational psychology.

Biology is a good UTME subject for this course; our JAMB Biology syllabus lists the topics. If you are writing again in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts.

Mistakes that cost Guidance and Counselling applicants a MOUAU place

  • Relying on a Mathematics pass: the general entry allows it, but MOUAU has not published that waiver.
  • Treating 150 as an admission score: it only gets you into screening.
  • MOUAU not first choice: required by the notice.
  • Combining several sittings: MOUAU weights the number of sittings.
  • Registering while awaiting results: MOUAU told awaiting candidates to wait.
  • Ignoring CAPS: your offer appears there first, and the four-week acceptance window is short.

MOUAU Guidance and Counselling cut off mark: frequently asked questions

What subjects do I need in JAMB for Guidance and Counselling at MOUAU? Use of English plus any three subjects under the general JAMB entry. MOUAU has no special remark on it, so a mix such as Biology, Economics and Government is a safe choice.

Can I study Guidance and Counselling at MOUAU without a credit in Mathematics? The general JAMB entry accepts a Mathematics pass, but MOUAU has not published that it accepts one. Get a Mathematics credit to be safe.

Is 170 good for Guidance and Counselling in MOUAU? 170 clears the 150 minimum and falls in the band I call a reasonable chance. Good O’level grades from one sitting will matter at that score.

Is Guidance and Counselling the same as Educational Psychology at MOUAU? No. MOUAU lists Guidance and Counselling as a department, while Educational Psychology appears only as a unit on the college’s own page. Choose Guidance and Counselling on your JAMB form.

Sources and updates

The 150 minimum, the MOUAU first-choice rule, the 6 June 2026 opening, the ₦2,000 Remita fee, the portal address, the awaiting-result rule and the weighting of O’level grades and sittings come from MOUAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr (Mrs) Nkeiruka Charity Mbanasor, as reprinted by Myschool on 20 June 2026; I could not open the original on mouau.edu.ng. The national minimum of 150, the 31 October 2026 admission deadline, the four-week acceptance window and the warning that admissions outside CAPS are illegal come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). The NCE exemption is from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting as reported by Nairametrics (11 May 2026) and from JAMB’s NCE and ND special registration guide (June 2026), which also ends degree admissions into colleges of education from 2026/2027. College and department names come from MOUAU’s official Academic Department by Faculty page (last modified 19 June 2026) and the College of Education’s own About COED page, which lists Educational Psychology as a unit. The general UTME, O’level and Direct Entry lines come from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Guidance and Counselling; neither that entry nor the Educational Psychology, Guidance and Counselling entry carries a MOUAU remark. TRCN registration and CASSON membership are general knowledge about the profession in Nigeria. The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration. MOUAU’s fees, the degree title, the programme duration and the accreditation status were not published in any source I reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if MOUAU publishes a departmental cut-off or new requirements.
