Oji River College of Health Technology Opticianry admission has no JAMB cut-off mark. Enugu State College of Health Technology, Oji River admits Opticianry students through its own form and entrance exam. Its last traced advert, for 2024/2025, asked for an O’level certificate and sold the form for ₦10,000 at the admission office, and the entrance exam held on Saturday 10 August 2024 after a postponement. Opticianry was named again among the college’s programmes in November 2025. No 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 advert has been found.
2027/2028 update: The admission requirements and entrance exam process at Oji River College of Health Technology usually stay the same from one year to the next, so what is on this page is what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. The latest advert we could trace is the 2024/2025 one, reprinted by an admissions blog; no 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 notice has turned up. If the 2027/2028 advert changes anything, we will update this page.
Below you will find the dated facts, the O’level subjects to have (using the national diploma rule as a benchmark, since the college has published no list), how the entrance exam worked in the last cycle on record, the application steps, how a dispensing optician differs from an optometrist and the ODORBN check to make before you pay fees.

Is there a JAMB cut-off mark for Opticianry at Oji River?
No cut-off mark has been published, and I could not find any source saying Opticianry applicants at this college must sit the UTME. The 2024/2025 advert, as reprinted by Myschool, asked only for an O’level certificate and sent candidates to the college’s own entrance exam. What an Opticianry applicant has to pass here is the college’s entrance exam.
If the college ever moves a programme onto JAMB’s list as a National Diploma, the national minimum for polytechnics and monotechnics would apply. JAMB fixed that at 100 for 2025/2026 and kept it at 100 for 2026/2027 at its policy meeting of 11 May 2026. Until the college says so, treat that figure as background only.
| Session | What happened at the college | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2024/2025 | Forms on sale from June 2024 at ₦10,000; entrance exam moved from Saturday 27 July to Saturday 10 August 2024, and form sales closed that day | Myschool reprints, 21 June and 23 July 2024 (blog reprints of college notices) |
| 2024 (August) | State government announces a revamp of the college and asks students to resume | Enugu State Government, 25 August 2024 |
| 2025 (November) | Oji River council pays full fees for 47 indigenes admitted into eight programmes, opticianry among them | The Sun, 12 November 2025 |
| 2025/2026 | No admission advert found | Searches up to 29 October 2026 |
| 2026/2027 | No admission advert found | Searches up to 29 October 2026 |
Those 2024 dates and the ₦10,000 price belong to the 2024/2025 cycle. They are useful as a guide to timing, since the form came out in June and the exam held in August that year, but they are not 2026 or 2027 figures.
O’level subjects for Opticianry at Oji River
The college has not published a subject list for Opticianry. The only requirement in the advert reprint is an O’level certificate, with a reminder that candidates must meet the programme’s entry requirements before applying. That leaves the details to the admission office, so here is what I would have before buying the form. It follows the national ND rule set by NBTE, which I use as the benchmark; it is not the college’s published list.
| Subject | National ND benchmark (NBTE) |
|---|---|
| English Language | Credit |
| Mathematics | Credit |
| Physics | Credit; optics is physics |
| Two of Chemistry, Biology or Health Science, Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing | Credits |
This is the entry rule in NBTE’s March 2021 curriculum for the National Diploma in Dispensing Opticianry: five credits at no more than two sittings. It is the national ND rule, not a list from the Oji River college, which has not said what level its programme is. Physics is the one I would never apply without, because lens work is applied optics from the first semester.
One admissions blog (Studentship, June 2025) lists credits in English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry plus a National Diploma “in a relevant field” for this college. The national Opticianry programme is itself an ND that school leavers enter with O’levels, and it requires Physics, which that blog list leaves out. I read the line as copied from another template. Ask the admission office.
How the Oji River entrance exam works for Opticianry
The college sets its own entrance exam. It has not published the subjects tested, the pass mark, the number of questions or how it ranks candidates, and no aggregate formula has been released. From the 2024/2025 cycle, these points are on record:
- Forms were sold at the college’s admission office in Oji River, not through JAMB.
- The form cost ₦10,000 in 2024. Myschool also advertised past questions for ₦4,500, but that was Myschool’s own product, not a college fee.
- The exam was first fixed for Saturday 27 July 2024, then moved to Saturday 10 August 2024. Form sales closed on the exam day.
- Studentship’s June 2025 page describes an online form and payment by card or at First Bank for the same session. The Myschool reprint says the admission office, and the college’s own notice was not available to me, so confirm the method in Oji River.
Worked example (illustrative)
Take Chiamaka, who has B2 in Physics, C4 in Mathematics, C6 in English, C5 in Biology and C6 in Economics from WAEC 2026. Under the NBTE list she has English, Mathematics and Physics, and Biology as one of the two extra sciences. Economics is not on the list, so she is one credit short of the national rule. She asks the admission office whether the college applies that rule; if it does, she sits NECO in November for a Chemistry credit. Going by 2024, when forms came out in late June and the exam held in August, she revises Physics and Mathematics through July.
The steps in that example are my planning advice. The college has not published a scoring method, and a pass in its exam is what decides the offer.
How to apply for Opticianry at Oji River College of Health Technology
- Confirm that sales are open: visit or call the admission office at the college in Oji River. With no official website found, the office is the safest source of the current form price, closing date and exam date.
- Check the O’level rule for Opticianry: ask which five subjects need credits, whether two sittings are accepted, and whether awaiting results are allowed.
- Buy the form from the college: in 2024 it was ₦10,000 at the admission office. Pay only through the channel the college gives you and keep the receipt.
- Fill and submit the form: choose Opticianry as your programme, attach passport photographs and copies of your O’level result and birth certificate or age declaration, and submit before the closing date.
- Write the entrance exam: go with your receipt or exam slip. Revise English, Mathematics, Biology and Chemistry at SSCE level, since those are the subjects most health exams draw from.
- Check the list and accept: when your name appears, pay the acceptance fee and the other fees the college lists. In 2025 the Oji River council listed acceptance, tuition, accreditation, development, examination, sanitation, sports and hostel charges among what it paid for its scholars, which gives you an idea of the separate items to expect.
- Only if the college says JAMB is needed: create a JAMB profile by sending NIN and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019, register the UTME with the college as your choice, upload your O’level to JAMB CAPS, then accept the offer on CAPS before paying the college. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each screen.
Warning
No official website for this college turned up in our searches, and sites that look official can belong to agents. Buy the form only at the college or through a payment channel the admission office gives you in writing, and never pay anyone who promises a guaranteed place.
Your chances of admission into Opticianry
The college does not publish an intake quota, and no applicant numbers have been released, so nobody can give you real odds. Two facts help. In November 2025 every one of the 47 Oji River indigenes sponsored by the local council was offered admission, across eight programmes. The council was paying their fees, so this tells you the college admitted candidates who met its requirements; it does not tell you how many outsiders were turned down.
Opticianry is a small, specialised programme, and I would expect fewer applicants than for the college’s better known courses. The college publishes no figures, so this is my judgement. A Physics credit and solid preparation should put you in a good position.
The college’s condition is the second thing to weigh. In August 2024 the Enugu State Government said the college had fallen from its former standing, announced a revamp and asked students to return after a security breach near the school. The government said the suspects had been arrested and the victims, one of them a student, freed, and that more security personnel had been posted to Oji River. Visit the campus, ask current students about lectures and clinical postings, and ask the college to show you its accreditation letter for Opticianry.
What you study in Opticianry
Dispensing opticians make up and fit the glasses that optometrists and eye doctors prescribe: they read the prescription, choose and measure lenses and frames, cut and fit the lenses, and adjust the finished spectacles to the wearer. The college has not published its course list. The topics below come from NBTE’s national ND curriculum, which ODORBN helped develop.
- Basic and physical optics, and ophthalmic lenses
- Ocular anatomy and physiology, and introduction to health and diseases
- Clinical optical dispensing and ophthalmic instruments
- Optical laboratory work: surfacing, cutting and fitting lenses
- Safety and first aid, primary health care management and professional ethics
- Practice management, entrepreneurship, a seminar and a project
Dispensing optician or optometrist?
The two are regulated by the same board but trained differently. An optometrist examines eyes and prescribes lenses, and in Nigeria trains through a university degree. A dispensing optician fills and fits the prescription. If you want to test eyes, look at the degree route; our ESUT Optometry cut-off mark guide covers one option in Enugu. If you like precise hands-on work and might run an optical shop one day, dispensing is the fit.
Duration and award
The college has not published how long its programme runs or what it awards. NBTE’s national ND in Dispensing Opticianry runs two academic sessions of two semesters each, followed by one year of Supervised Ophthalmic Laboratory Experience (SOLE). Ask the admission office whether Oji River follows that curriculum.
Accreditation and licensing
ODORBN registers dispensing opticians, and under NBTE’s curriculum it conducts the final qualifying examination for the ND. I could not confirm that ODORBN has approved the Opticianry programme at Oji River, and the college has published nothing on it. Since you need to pass the board’s exam and register to practise, ask to see the approval letter before paying school fees.
Do not confuse this college with the Oji River campus of the Enugu State College of Nursing Sciences. The state government reported in April 2025 that the nursing college had opened campuses in Nsukka and Oji River after accreditation. That is a separate institution with its own admissions, and nursing is not one of the College of Health Technology’s programmes.
Careers
- Optical shops and eye clinics, dispensing and fitting spectacles
- Optical laboratories that surface and fit lenses
- Hospital eye departments, alongside optometrists and ophthalmologists

Mistakes Opticianry applicants make
- Waiting for a JAMB cut-off: none has been published. The college’s own form and exam decide admission.
- Planning with 2024 dates: the 27 July and 10 August 2024 exam dates and the ₦10,000 price were for 2024/2025.
- Buying forms from strangers: buy at the college or through a channel it names.
- Skipping the accreditation question: ask whether ODORBN has approved the programme before paying school fees.
- Missing a science credit: Physics is the credit I would never apply without for Opticianry.
If you also plan to write the UTME for a university or polytechnic place, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and, if you later want to switch schools, JAMB change of institution.
