UNTH School of Midwifery Admission Requirements 2027/2028: Entrance Exam and Form

UNTH School of Midwifery runs an 18-month post-basic course for nurses registered with the NMCN. See who can apply, the likely documents, how UNTH sells post-basic forms, NMCN status and options for school leavers.

UNTH School of Midwifery admission requirements come down to one rule the school states plainly: you must already be a qualified nurse registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). The school at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, runs only post-basic midwifery, an 18-month course that leads to the NMCN midwifery qualifying exam. It does not take school leavers, it does not use JAMB, and it has no cut-off mark.

2027/2028 update: UNTH School of Midwifery admission requirements and entrance process usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the rules on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official information (UNTH’s school page and its 2026/2027 post-basic notices). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

The school has trained midwives since March 1977 and holds full NMCN approval, but it has not put a form fee, closing date or O’level list on its page, and I found no official 2026/2027 advert. Below is what UNTH has confirmed, what its sister post-basic schools ask for (a good guide to what midwifery will ask), how the application usually works at UNTH, and where school leavers who want to become midwives should look instead.

Who can apply to UNTH School of Midwifery?

Only nurses who have finished general nursing training and are registered with the NMCN. That is the one entry condition UNTH prints, and it rules out several groups who often search for this school:

You areCan you apply? What to do instead
A registered nurse (RN) with a current licenceYesPrepare for the entrance exam and interview
A final-year student nurseNot yetPass the NMCN nursing exam and get your registration first
A school leaver with O’level creditsNoBasic midwifery elsewhere, or nursing first (see below)
A BNSc graduate registered as a nurseYes, as a registered nurseConfirm with the school whether graduates follow the same intake
A community health worker (CHEW or CHO)NoCommunity midwifery or nursing routes, depending on your goal

What the school is likely to ask for (based on UNTH’s other post-basic schools)

The midwifery page does not list documents or experience. Two other UNTH post-basic schools do, and their rules give you a sensible checklist. Treat this as preparation advice, not a published midwifery rule.

If you have all of these, you are in a strong position for midwifery too. If your O’level is missing Physics or Mathematics, ask the school directly before you buy anything, because the midwifery page is silent on O’level subjects.

UNTH School of Midwifery entrance exam and form

UNTH has not published the midwifery exam format, fee or calendar. What we do know is how its post-basic schools sell forms:

  • The 2026/2027 Nurse Anaesthetist notice put forms online at www.unthportal.org, with a written and oral exam and interview after the form window closed.
  • The ophthalmic school says it sells forms from February and holds its entrance exam in July.
  • The perioperative school scheduled its 2024 entrance exam for 7 to 9 August 2024 and then postponed it, announcing the change on UNTH’s website.

So expect a form on the UNTH portal, a written exam on nursing and midwifery basics, and an oral interview. There is also a national rule that may affect timing. An NMCN circular reported by Nairametrics in February 2024 said colleges with approved ND/HND Nursing programmes could admit up to 60 candidates a year into Post Basic Midwifery, in September. UNTH’s College of Nursing Sciences runs ND/HND nursing, but the school has not said whether that September pattern applies to it.

Worked example (illustrative)

  1. Applicant: Nkechi qualified as a registered nurse in 2024 and has worked on a medical ward in Enugu for two years. Her practising licence is current.
  2. Entry check: she is registered with the NMCN, which is the rule UNTH publishes. She meets it.
  3. Safety check: she has credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology from one WAEC sitting and two years of experience, so she would also pass the stricter rules UNTH uses for its other post-basic schools.
  4. Preparation: she revises reproductive anatomy, normal pregnancy and labour, and basic newborn care, and practises answering “Why midwifery?” for the interview.

How to apply to UNTH School of Midwifery, step by step

  1. Renew your licence: make sure your NMCN practising licence is current before the form opens. An expired licence is the fastest way to be screened out.
  2. Gather documents: nursing certificate, NMCN registration and licence, O’level result(s), birth certificate, and a letter of service or experience from your employer. Get a medical fitness report ready too, since UNTH’s ophthalmic school asks for one.
  3. Watch official channels: UNTH’s news page (unth.edu.ng) and the portal at www.unthportal.org. Ignore social media posts with private phone numbers.
  4. Buy and fill the form online: pay only on the UNTH portal and print your form and receipt.
  5. Sit the exam and interview: bring original certificates and your printed slip, and arrange your own accommodation if you are travelling, as UNTH told nurse anaesthetist applicants to do in 2026.
  6. Accept and settle in: the school will give fees and resumption details with the admission letter. If you are employed, sort out study leave or sponsorship early.

Warning

Pages offering a “UNTH School of Midwifery form” to school leavers, or asking you to call a private number to buy one, are not from UNTH. The school admits registered nurses only, and UNTH’s post-basic forms are sold on its own portal.

No basic midwifery at UNTH: options for school leavers

If you are fresh from secondary school and want to become a midwife, UNTH cannot take you straight into midwifery. You have two practical routes:

RouteWhereWhat you need
Nursing first, then post-basic midwiferyUNTH’s College of Nursing Sciences (BNSc; ND/HND matriculated in 2025)UTME with English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics; 180 minimum for the 2026/2027 BNSc form
Basic midwiferyEnugu State options, such as the state College of Nursing Sciences, which awards RM among its qualificationsCheck the state’s own notice for requirements

I would pick nursing first if you can. A nurse who later adds midwifery holds two registrations, which opens more jobs in hospitals and abroad. For the nursing route at UNTH, see our UNTH BNSc cut-off mark guide, and register for the UTME on time using our JAMB 2027 registration guide.

About the UNTH School of Midwifery

The Midwives Board of Nigeria approved UNTH to train midwives with effect from March 1977, at a joint meeting with the Nursing Council in Ikeja, and training started that month. The pioneer principal was the late Mrs Priscilla Egbuciem. The course ran for 12 months until 2006, when a new curriculum extended it to 18 months. The school’s page is signed by Mrs L. C. Anukwe, DDME/Principal, and its motto is “safe motherhood through quality education”.

The school lists two awards: one from the Committee of Heads of Basic and Post Basic Nursing Institutions in Nigeria for the best candidate in the March 2006 final qualifying exam, and an NMCN outstanding performance award for the March 2008 exam. It also claims 100% pass rates in external exams in recent years, a claim UNTH has not backed with published figures.

Accreditation

The NMCN’s December 2025 list shows UNTH’s midwifery programme with full approval dated January 2021. The council’s earlier August 2022 list gave the School of Post Basic Midwifery, UNTH, a quota of 50 students. The NMCN legend says full approval runs for five years, so check that the school’s approval has been renewed when you apply.

What you study in 18 months

  • Reproductive anatomy and physiology, conception and foetal development.
  • Antenatal care, normal labour and delivery, and care after birth.
  • Obstetric emergencies, complications of pregnancy and referral.
  • Newborn care, family planning and community midwifery.
  • Supervised deliveries and the NMCN final qualifying exam for registration as a midwife.

Registered nurse-midwives work in labour wards, antenatal clinics, primary health centres and maternity homes, and many go on to public health, family planning or teaching roles.

Mistakes UNTH midwifery applicants make

  • Applying before registration: a nursing result or certificate is not the same as NMCN registration.
  • Letting the licence lapse: renew it before the form window, not after.
  • Waiting for a WhatsApp broadcast: UNTH posts its post-basic adverts on its own site and portal.
  • Not arranging study leave: 18 months is a long time away from a ward. Talk to your employer early about leave or sponsorship.
  • Treating old blog fees as current: no midwifery form fee has been published by UNTH.
