UNN Cut-Off Mark for Philosophy 2027/2028: Entry Requirements, O’Level Rules and Screening

UNN needs 160 in the UTME to screen for Philosophy in 2027/2028 and has published no departmental cut-off. See the UTME and O’level requirements, Direct Entry, an aggregate example, the score to aim for and what the course at UNN covers.

The UNN cut off mark for Philosophy for 2026/2027 is 160 in the UTME, the minimum the University of Nigeria, Nsukka set in its screening notice of 13 July 2026 for candidates who chose UNN first. UNN has not published a departmental merit or catchment cut-off for Philosophy for 2026/2027 or 2025/2026, and I have not found a sourced estimate for it, so any exact “UNN Philosophy cut-off” is unofficial.

2027/2028 update: UNN cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

You will also see 200 quoted. That is the minimum UNN declared at the JAMB 2026 policy meeting, reported on 11 May 2026. UNN takes screening applications from 160, its declared benchmark was 200, and Philosophy, with a small yearly intake, still ranks candidates and admits the strongest. This guide covers the UTME and O’level requirements, Direct Entry, how screening worked, an aggregate example, merit and catchment, the score I would aim for and what the course at UNN is actually like.

The 160 is the gate for screening. The departmental cut-off is the lowest score finally admitted into Philosophy after ranking, and UNN does not announce it. The target score later on is my advice, labelled as such.

UNN Philosophy cut-off history

Only the figures below trace back to UNN or JAMB. None of them is specific to Philosophy.

I have not seen even a blog estimate for Philosophy at UNN that names a source. If a website gives you an exact “Philosophy cut-off” for UNN, ask where it came from, because UNN itself has not released one.

One official figure from 2025/2026 is still useful. When UNN advertised unfilled places in October 2025 (its “advert” or shopping window), the list counted vacancies, not scores. Combined Social Sciences had 140 unfilled places on that list. A vacancy count is not a cut-off, but a programme with that many empty seats was clearly not oversubscribed that year, which is worth knowing if you are looking for a fallback inside the faculty.

UTME subject combination and O’level for Philosophy at UNN

For Philosophy, the JAMB brochure’s general entry is any three subjects plus Use of English, and five O’level credits including English Language and four other relevant subjects. Several universities add their own remarks, but the brochure page I checked carries no UNN-specific remark for Philosophy, so the general entry is the baseline for UNN.

RequirementPhilosophy at UNN
UTME subjectsUse of English plus any three subjects; I would pick Arts or Social Science subjects such as Literature in English, Government and CRS
O’level (JAMB general entry)Five credits including English Language and four other relevant subjects
Faculty general ruleFive credits including English and a science subject, in not more than two sittings
MathematicsNot named in the general entry; many universities ask for at least a pass, and I would have a credit
Direct Entry (JAMB general entry)Any two A’level passes; confirm UNN’s own DE rule on your JAMB profile
Minimum UTME to apply160, with UNN as first choice

UNN’s Faculty of Social Sciences admissions page has a row for Philosophy, but the requirements printed in it (Biology, Health Science and a nursing certificate) clearly belong to a different programme, so I have not relied on it. What the faculty page does say clearly is its general rule: five credits including English and a science subject, in at most two sittings. Put together, a safe O’level profile for Philosophy at UNN is credits in English, Mathematics, one Science subject such as Biology, and two Arts or Social Science subjects.

The “any three subjects” rule is wide enough to let science candidates apply. Even so, choose subjects that fit the course: Literature in English, CRS or IRS, and Government match the reading and argument you will do in the first year, and they also keep Sociology, Social Work and Religion and Cultural Studies open if Philosophy does not work out.

Direct Entry into Philosophy

JAMB’s general entry for Philosophy accepts any two A’level passes. The brochure page has no UNN remark for Direct Entry, and I could not find a current UNN department page stating its own DE rule. Diploma and NCE holders should check UNN’s entry on their JAMB DE profile before paying for registration. Whatever route you take, UNN’s 2026/2027 notice required DE candidates’ A’level results to be verified by NIPEDS.

UNN screening for 2027/2028: what Philosophy candidates had to do

UNN’s 2026/2027 notice of 13 July 2026 described an online screening registration. It gave no test date, no venue and no exam format, so as far as the official notice goes there was no written post-UTME paper for Philosophy. Anyone selling “2026/2027 UNN post-UTME questions” for this course is selling something the notice never mentioned.

Uploads (each under 100KB)Birth certificate, LGA identification, testimonial, First School Leaving Certificate, JAMB result slip, O’level result(s)
Direct EntryDE candidates with UNN as first choice also registered; A’level results had to be verified by NIPEDS

The route was unn.edu.ng, then UNN Portal at the top right (unnportal.unn.edu.ng), then Prospective Students and the screening form. You entered your JAMB number, generated and paid the Remita invoice, came back to fill personal and O’level details (centre and exam numbers included), uploaded the documents, reviewed, submitted and printed the acknowledgement slip. Date of birth cannot be changed after you submit, so check it twice.

How UNN ranks Philosophy candidates (aggregate example)

UNN has not published its aggregate formula. Neither the 2026/2027 screening notice nor the 2025/2026 advert notice gives weights or grade points. The 2025/2026 advert notice did refer to a separate screening score with a 160 threshold, but it did not say how that score is worked out.

Several Nigerian education blogs describe the same method, and it is the one you will see most often: 60% of your UTME score plus 40% of an O’level score built from four relevant subjects, where A1 = 100, B2 = 90, B3 = 80, C4 = 70, C5 = 60 and C6 = 50. Treat the example below as an illustration of that blog method. It is not an official UNN formula.

StepWorking
UTME score210
O’level: English LanguageB3 = 80
O’level: Literature in EnglishC4 = 70
O’level: CRSB2 = 90
O’level: GovernmentC6 = 50
O’level total (out of 400)290
60% of UTME210 × 0.6 = 126
40% of O’level290 × 0.4 = 116
Aggregate (out of 400)126 + 116 = 242

That Philosophy candidate reaches 242 out of 400. The C6 in Government costs the most here: a B3 instead would add 12 points, about the same as 20 more UTME marks. The blog sources do not say which four subjects UNN counts for Philosophy, so this is an illustration only.

Merit, catchment and ELDS for Philosophy at UNN

UNN is a federal university, so it admits under the federal guideline widely reported as 45% merit, 35% catchment and 20% educationally less developed states (ELDS). That is national policy. UNN has not published its own split for Philosophy or any other course.

  • Merit: the highest-ranked candidates from any state fill this list first, so it carries the highest cut-off.
  • Catchment: UNN has not published a catchment list. It is generally understood to be the South-East states; confirm on JAMB CAPS or with the UNN admissions office before you plan around it.
  • ELDS: a federal designation. UNN does not publish its own ELDS list, and I would ignore any blog that names states “for UNN”.
  • State of origin: what counts is the state on your JAMB profile, backed by the LGA identification letter UNN asks for at screening.

Philosophy at UNN admits a small class. The department’s own history page says intake grew from about 15 to 20 students a year to more than 30, which is still small next to Sociology or Economics. With so few seats, a handful of strong first-choice applicants can push the last admitted score up, while in a weak year the department may take candidates moved from other Social Science courses.

My advice (not a UNN figure): aim for 210 or more in the UTME with good O’level grades for a comfortable chance on merit. From a catchment state, about 195 to 205 with strong grades is a realistic try. Under about 185, prepare a second option.

Step by step: from JAMB profile to resuming for Philosophy at UNN

  1. Get or recover your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone number linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to register.
  2. Choose UNN first, and choose Philosophy by name: UNN screens only first-choice candidates. Getting the course right at registration saves you a change of course later.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result must show on your JAMB profile. For 2026/2027 UNN wanted it on CAPS and on the UNN portal by 5 August 2026. An accredited CBT centre can do the CAPS upload for you.
  4. Register for UNN screening: when the notice comes out (it came on 13 July in 2026), fill the form on unnportal.unn.edu.ng, pay through Remita and print your slip.
  5. Watch CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access My CAPS and Admission Status. On a phone, switch the browser to desktop view.
  6. Accept or reject: read the course name before you click. If CAPS shows a Transfer Approval, UNN is offering you a course other than Philosophy, and you must respond to it first.
  7. Print the JAMB admission letter and pay acceptance: pay UNN’s acceptance fee on the UNN portal. Blogs report ₦25,000, but I found no official 2026/2027 figure, so go by the amount the portal shows you.
  8. Clearance: follow the faculty’s clearance instructions with your originals. Nobody can “secure” a UNN place for you on CAPS for a fee.

Do not stop at CAPS

Accepting on JAMB CAPS and paying UNN’s acceptance fee are two separate steps, and you need both. JAMB’s 2026 policy gives candidates four weeks to accept an offer on CAPS before it can be lost. Accept, print the admission letter, pay on the UNN portal and keep every receipt.

UNN’s homepage already lists 2026/2027 notices for its primary admission list, the Direct Entry list and lists for candidates with disabilities and foreign candidates, and Myschool reported on 25 October 2026 that the list can be checked on CAPS. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status message.

Studying Philosophy at UNN: history, courses and careers

UNN’s brief history of the Department of Philosophy says it was the first Philosophy department in a Nigerian university. It started in 1972/73 as Philosophy and Classics, became a sub-unit of the Department of Religion in the Faculty of Social Sciences from 1974/75, and became a full department in 1981. That is why Philosophy sits in Social Sciences at UNN rather than in Arts. The department is on the Nsukka campus and the programme runs for four years for UTME entrants.

One detail to know before you accept: the same history page says the first graduates in 1976 received a B.A. (Hons.), and that students have long argued for a B.Sc. like the rest of the faculty because JAMB listed the course as B.Sc. Check the degree title on your admission letter and in the current handbook.

The department describes a programme focused on man and society. Courses named on its history page include:

  • Logic and the philosophy of science
  • Social and political philosophy, and the philosophy of law
  • African philosophy (the department says it was the first in Nigeria to develop African philosophy courses)
  • Existentialism
  • Philosophy of religion and Islamic philosophy
Where graduates workExamples
LawMany philosophy graduates go on to study Law; a first degree also opens some graduate-entry routes
Media and writingJournalism, broadcasting, editing and speech writing (two of the department’s first graduates produced TV programmes for NTA and ABS Enugu, according to its history page)
Public service and policyAdministrative roles, policy research, think tanks and NGOs
Teaching and religionTeaching, seminaries and religious organisations
Further studyM.A. or Ph.D. in philosophy, ethics, law or public policy

Common mistakes Philosophy applicants make

  • Treating Philosophy as an automatic admission: the class is small and still ranked.
  • No Science credit: the Faculty of Social Sciences general rule asks for one.
  • No Mathematics: it may not be named for Philosophy, but most fallback courses in the faculty need it.
  • Trusting the garbled faculty row: Philosophy does not need Health Science or a nursing certificate.
  • Choosing UNN second: UNN screens first-choice candidates only.

UNN cut off mark for Philosophy: frequently asked questions

Is 190 enough for Philosophy in UNN? It clears the 160 screening minimum, so you can be screened, but it is below UNN’s declared 200 and the 210 I would aim for. It has a chance only with very good O’level grades, most likely on the catchment list.

What JAMB subjects do I need for Philosophy at UNN? Use of English plus any three subjects under JAMB’s general entry. I would choose Arts or Social Science subjects such as Literature in English, Government and CRS.

Is Philosophy in UNN B.A. or B.Sc.? UNN’s own department history says graduates have received a B.A. (Hons.), while students have pushed for a B.Sc. Check the title on your admission letter and the current handbook.

Which faculty is Philosophy in at UNN? The Faculty of Social Sciences on the Nsukka campus. It moved there from Arts in the 1970s, when it became part of the Department of Religion.

Sources and updates

The 160 minimum, screening dates, fees, eligibility rules and portal steps come from the UNN Registrar’s notice 2026/2027 Screening Exercise for Admission of 13 July 2026. The 200 figure comes from Vanguard’s 11 May 2026 report of the JAMB policy meeting (via AllAfrica), and the national 150 minimum and four-week CAPS acceptance window from the News Agency of Nigeria report of the same day. The 2025/2026 figure of 160 and the vacancy count come from reprints of UNN’s October 2025 advert notice. The general JAMB entry for Philosophy comes from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure, which shows no UNN remark for this course. The faculty’s five-credit rule comes from the Faculty of Social Sciences admission requirements page (its Philosophy row is misaligned and was not used). The department’s founding dates, course list, intake and degree-title history come from UNN’s history of the Department of Philosophy on socialscs.unn.edu.ng. The 45/35/20 quota is national policy, not a UNN figure. The aggregate method is a blog method, not a published UNN formula, and the ₦25,000 acceptance fee is an unofficial report. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if UNN publishes departmental cut-offs.
