The Minnesota Carlson MBA is the full-time, two-year MBA at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management in Minneapolis. It is ranked No. 32 by U.S. News (2026 edition) and admitted 39.5% of applicants for the fall 2025 intake, according to Poets&Quants. It is also one of the few schools that runs a separate, STEM-designated Management Science MBA alongside the regular programme, and it names Prodigy Finance and MPOWER as loan options for international students.
The 1 October round has passed, so your Deadline is 1 December 2026. If you live outside the U.S., the last round open to you is 1 February 2027. Non-resident tuition for 2026-27 is $64,460 a year, plus $7,602.40 in fees for international students. Below are the Carlson MBA requirements for international students, the essays, the impromptu video, the interview, costs, scholarships and career outcomes.

Minnesota Carlson MBA ranking
U.S. News ranked Carlson No. 32 among full-time MBA programmes in its 2026 Best Business Schools list, released on 7 April 2026, tied with Ohio State’s Fisher College. Poets&Quants places Carlson at No. 43 in its own 2026 composite ranking. Minneapolis and St. Paul host the headquarters of several Fortune 500 companies in retail, health care, food and medical devices, and that corporate base shapes where Carlson graduates work.
Minnesota Carlson MBA acceptance rate and class profile
Carlson does not publish an acceptance rate on its pages. Poets&Quants, analysing data reported to U.S. News, gives these figures:
| Intake | Applications | Acceptance rate | Yield | Enrolled |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2025 | 435 | 39.5% | 31.4% | 54 |
| Fall 2024 | 450 | 45.8% | 43.9% | 72 |
| Fall 2023 | 375 | 46.9% | 49.4% | 87 |
Carlson draws a small applicant pool, so a well-prepared application has a good chance. The class has been shrinking, though: 87 students in 2023 and 54 in 2025. A smaller class means more attention from the career centre but fewer scholarship slots, which is another reason to apply early.
| Carlson full-time MBA class profile | Figure |
|---|---|
| Typical cohort size | About 75 |
| Average GMAT | 664.4 |
| Average GRE total | 317.7 |
| Median GPA | 3.5 |
| Average work experience (as listed) | 3.4 to 7 years |
| Average age | 29 |
| International | Around 20% of recent cohorts |
Carlson’s class profile page does not state which intake it describes, and it gives no GMAT Focus average or share of women. Undergraduate backgrounds were business and commerce (29%), social science (22%), science (20%), engineering (16%), economics (7%) and humanities (5%).
Minnesota Carlson MBA requirements for international students
- A degree equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor’s. Applicants with a three-year Indian degree may be considered.
- Unofficial transcripts for review, with the original-language document and an English translation. Official transcripts are needed only after admission. Third-party evaluations are not accepted in place of transcripts, and you should not post paper copies.
- A personal statement of about three pages.
- An impromptu video essay.
- A resume or CV of no more than three pages, with month and year for each role.
- Two professional recommendations through the GMAC Common Letter of Recommendation; Carlson emails the form to your recommenders.
- GMAT or GRE less than five years old, or an approved waiver. There is no minimum score. Codes: GMAT D2N-VJ-15, GRE 8387.
- Proof of English proficiency.
- The $75 non-refundable application fee.
- An interview, by invitation.
English requirements
Every applicant must prove English proficiency. You are exempt if you completed at least the last two years of a bachelor’s degree, or one year of full-time graduate study, in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Anglophone Africa or the English-speaking Caribbean. That exemption covers graduates of universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and other English-speaking African countries, with official transcripts. Education entirely in English in a country where English is not official, such as India, can also count with documented proof. Otherwise, scores under two years old must meet these minimums:
| Test | Carlson minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (before 21 January 2026) | 87 total; Reading 22, Listening 20, Speaking 23, Writing 22 |
| TOEFL (on or after 21 January 2026) | 5 total, with 4.5 in each section |
| IELTS | 7.0 overall, no band below 6.5 |
| PTE Academic | 65 |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 overall and 120 Literacy |
Test waivers
You must meet all of these: a four-year degree from an accredited U.S. university or its international equivalent; a GPA of at least 3.2 in your most recent degree (3.0 for STEM majors); and at least one of progressively responsible full-time work experience, a master’s or doctorate, the CPA or CFA, or four years of U.S. military service. Request the waiver before you submit. GPA conversion from non-U.S. scales is not explained on Carlson’s page, so ask admissions how your grades will be read.

Applicants outside the U.S.
Your final chance is 1 February 2027, but the 1 December 2026 round gives you more time for the I-20, which Carlson issues only after verifying your funds, and for a U.S. visa appointment.

Minnesota Carlson MBA essays 2026-2027
| Essay | Prompt (summary) | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Personal statement | Why an MBA now and your short- and long-term goals; what excites you about Carlson and any Enterprise programme; how you have built more inclusive communities | About 3 pages |
| Impromptu video | One question, unseen in advance | 120 seconds to prepare, 120 seconds to record, one attempt |
| MBA affinity fellowship essay (if applying) | How your goals align with the mission of NBMBAA, Prospanica, ROMBA or Forté | 1 page per organisation |
| Funds Enterprise scholarship statement (if applying) | Why the Finance Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship and the Funds Enterprise would help your career | 1 page |
| Optional | Gaps, academic weaknesses, quantitative ability, recommender choice, or reapplicant updates | 1 page |
The personal statement
Treat the three parts as three sections of roughly a page each. For the first, name a target role and industry, ideally one that hires in the Twin Cities, and say what you lack today. For the second, name Carlson specifics, especially one of its Enterprise programmes, where students work on real projects. For the third, use one concrete episode where you made a team or community more open to people who were left out, and say what changed.
For illustration: “At our Lagos plant, night-shift technicians never attended safety reviews because we held them at 10 a.m. I moved one review a month to 6 a.m., and reported incidents fell within a quarter.”
The impromptu video
You get two minutes to think and two minutes to speak, with one official attempt. Use the practice questions until you can give a clear answer in three parts: your point, an example, and what it shows about you. Check your internet connection, light and sound first.
The Carlson interview
Interviews are by invitation after an initial review, sent by email. You can do it on campus or over Zoom. Carlson asks you to treat it like a job interview and to dress in business professional clothes, even online. Expect questions on your goals, why Carlson, teamwork and leadership.
What the admissions committee looks for
- Clear goals that connect to Carlson’s Enterprise programmes and the Minneapolis job market.
- Evidence of building inclusive teams, which is one of the three essay questions.
- Quick, composed thinking on camera in the impromptu video.
- Two professional recommenders who know your recent work.
- Academic readiness through a test score or a strong waiver case.
Minnesota Carlson MBA tuition and cost of attendance
| Item, 2026-27 (first year) | International student |
|---|---|
| Tuition (non-resident and international) | $64,460 |
| Fees, including $652 in international student fees | $7,602.40 |
| Room and board, Twin Cities (estimate) | $19,108 |
| Personal and miscellaneous (estimate) | $4,000 |
| Transportation (estimate) | $2,350 |
| Books and supplies (estimate) | $1,000 |
| Loan fees (estimate) | $740 |
| Estimated total | About $99,260 |
Minnesota residents and those from reciprocity areas (North Dakota, Wisconsin and Manitoba) pay $49,100 in tuition instead. The total above is my sum of Carlson’s listed figures. A $1,500 non-refundable tuition deposit, applied to your first term, secures your seat: $1,000 at admission and $500 by 20 June.
Costs not covered
- Global experience fees, which vary by destination.
- The optional MBA club fee ($450) and partner fee ($150).
- Winter clothing for Minneapolis, where winters are long and very cold.
- The SEVIS fee, U.S. visa fee and flights.
- Extra proof of funds for a spouse or children.
Minnesota Carlson MBA scholarships for international students
Carlson offers merit-based scholarships and named fellowships, and every admitted Full-Time and Management Science MBA applicant is considered automatically. The tuition page does not list award amounts, the share of students funded, or any citizenship limits. Two awards have their own statements in the application:
- MBA affinity fellowships linked to NBMBAA, Prospanica, ROMBA and Forté, each with a one-page essay.
- The Finance Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship through the David S. Kidwell Funds Enterprise, with a one-page statement.
Carlson’s MBA programme has no built-in assistantships, though graduate assistant jobs across the university are open to MBA students; Carlson lists a minimum of $28.93 an hour for labour-represented roles and advises against relying on one.
Loans for international students
International students cannot get U.S. federal loans, and the university’s own lending requires a U.S. co-signer. Carlson names Prodigy Finance and MPOWER as options for international students without endorsing either. Both lend without a co-signer to eligible nationalities, so check whether your country is covered before you count on them. For other funding, see our list of American scholarships for international students.
STEM designation and OPT
The regular Full-Time MBA is not STEM-designated. The Management Science MBA is a separate degree under CIP code 52.1301, which qualifies for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, up to 36 months of work in total. It has the same 64 credits, deadlines and scholarship process, but 12 of its credits are STEM electives and 4 are required analytics credits. The cohort is small, roughly nine students a year, and shares classes and career services with the full-time MBA. You must choose it at application because the two cannot be swapped after you enrol. If U.S. work time after graduation matters to you, apply to the Management Science MBA.
Minnesota Carlson MBA salary and employment
Carlson pools three graduating years (2023 to 2025), including Management Science MBA graduates, in its employment statistics:
- 86% had offers and 80% had accepted offers within 90 days of graduation.
- Average base salary: $135,912, ranging from $60,000 to $195,000. No median is published.
- Average signing bonus: $31,242.
- Graduates without U.S. work authorization averaged $137,634 in base salary, slightly above those with authorization ($134,385).
- 3% accepted jobs outside the U.S.
| Industry | Share of hires, 2023 to 2025 |
|---|---|
| Consulting | 22% |
| Healthcare, products and services | 17% |
| Financial services | 13% |
| Consumer packaged goods | 11% |
By function, 27% went into consulting, 25% into marketing and sales, and 19% into finance and accounting. Employers named include Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs and Procter & Gamble.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Applying to the Full-Time MBA when you need STEM OPT; you cannot switch to Management Science later.
- Requesting a test waiver after submitting.
- Missing the 1 February 2027 cut-off if you live outside the U.S.
- Uploading an evaluation report instead of your actual transcripts.
- Writing a three-page statement that never answers the inclusive communities question.
- Self-certifying mark sheets instead of using university or government attestation.
- Assuming Prodigy or MPOWER covers your country without checking.
Who should apply to Minnesota Carlson, and who shouldn’t
Apply if you want a mid-sized U.S. city with large corporate employers in health care, retail and consumer goods, project-based learning through the Enterprise programmes, and a realistic admit rate. Graduates from Anglophone Africa benefit from the English exemption and the named no-co-signer loan options.
Think twice if you want a large international community (around 20% of recent classes), a published median salary, or a STEM path without committing to the Management Science MBA at the application stage.
