This guide covers the USC Marshall MBA requirements for international students, the essay, English rules, scholarships, STEM and salaries.

USC Marshall MBA ranking
U.S. News placed Marshall No. 25 among full-time MBA programmes in its 2026 Best Business Schools list, released on 7 April 2026. Poets&Quants, which builds its own composite ranking, put Marshall at No. 24 in its 2026 list. Either way, Marshall sits in the band just below the top 20, alongside schools such as UGA Terry, Georgia Tech Scheller and WashU Olin.
USC Marshall MBA acceptance rate and class profile
Marshall publishes its acceptance rate, which many schools do not. For the fall 2025 intake it received 1,914 applications and admitted 31%. Poets&Quants, using the data schools report to U.S. News, gives the same 1,914 applications, a 31.4% acceptance rate and a yield of 29.33%, which means fewer than a third of admitted applicants enrolled. A school with that yield admits more people than it seats, which helps you as an applicant.
| Entering class 2025 | Figure |
|---|---|
| Class size | 176 |
| Average GMAT | 742 |
| Average GRE | 322 |
| Average undergraduate GPA | 3.55 |
| Average age | 28 |
| Average work experience | 6 years |
| Women | 31% |
| International | 43% |
| Underrepresented minorities (share of domestic students) | 22% |
Marshall reports averages only. It does not publish medians, and its class profile does not say which GMAT edition the 742 average is based on. The current GMAT Focus Edition runs on a different scale from the older exam, so compare your score using GMAC’s concordance before you decide whether you are above or below the class.
USC Marshall MBA requirements for international students
- A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent. Marshall has no minimum GPA and does not ask you to convert your grades to a 4.0 scale.
- A professional resume.
- The required essay, plus an optional essay (required for reapplicants).
- A copy of your academic transcripts uploaded with the application. Transcripts that are not in English need the original plus a translation.
- TOEFL or IELTS, unless you qualify for the waiver below.
- GMAT or GRE scores if you choose to send them. Testing is optional.
- No recommendation letters. Marshall says it does not accept them.
- No application fee.
Marshall recommends at least two years of full-time work experience. The fall 2025 class averaged six years, so if you have two or three years, your essay has to show why now is the right time.
English requirements
TOEFL or IELTS is required for most international applicants. Marshall does not print a minimum score on its admissions page; it points you to USC’s English Language Proficiency Policies. You may qualify for a waiver if your bachelor’s degree is from a non-U.S. institution where English was the sole medium of instruction, and you prove it with an official transcript, diploma or letter from the university. Many universities in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and other Anglophone countries can issue such a letter, so ask your registrar early. The TOEFL code is 4852.
GMAT and GRE
Tests are optional and there is no minimum. If you submit, upload a copy of the score report with the application and have the testing service send the official report (GMAT code 389-9C-23, GRE code 4852). I would still take the test if your degree is from a university U.S. admissions officers rarely see, because a solid quantitative score is the fastest way to show you can handle the core courses.
USC Marshall MBA deadlines 2026-2027
| Round | Application deadline | Decision by |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 (closed) | 15 October 2026 | 15 December 2026 |
| Round 2 | 5 January 2027 | 31 March 2027 |
| Round 3 | 1 March 2027 | 15 May 2027 |
| Round 4 | 15 April 2027 | 15 June 2027 |
| Round 5 | Rolling after 15 April 2027 | Space available |
Visa timing
Round 2 decisions arrive by 31 March 2027. Round 3 and Round 4 decisions come in May and June, which leaves little time for the I-20, the SEVIS fee and an F-1 visa interview before an August start. Apply in Round 2 if you can.
How to apply, step by step
- Check the English waiver: Ask your university for an official letter confirming English was the sole language of instruction, or book TOEFL or IELTS.
- Decide on a test: Take the GMAT or GRE if you want to strengthen your academic case; skip it only if your transcript already shows strong quantitative work.
- Prepare transcripts: Scan every transcript, with an English translation where needed.
- Update your resume: Lead each role with results and numbers.
- Write the 400-word goals essay and, only if useful, the optional essay.
- Submit by 5 January 2027 through Marshall’s online application. There is no fee to pay.
- Interview if invited: Interviews are by invitation.
- After admission: Send official scores, confirm your funding and request the I-20.
USC Marshall MBA essays 2026-2027
| Essay | Prompt (summary) | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Required essay | Your short-term (three to five years after the MBA) and long-term (a decade or more) career goals, and how a USC Marshall MBA will help you reach them | 400 words |
| Optional essay (required for reapplicants) | Anything about you that is not elsewhere in the application; reapplicants explain what has changed | 500 words |
How to answer the goals essay
With one essay and no recommendation letters, this 400 words carries more weight than at most schools. Spend about a third on the short-term goal (a specific role, industry and type of employer), a short paragraph on the long-term goal, and the rest on why Marshall in particular. Marshall is in Los Angeles with strong links to entertainment, technology and the Pacific Rim, so name the courses, clubs or regions that fit your plan.
For illustration: “Within three years of graduating, I want to lead pricing strategy for a streaming platform entering West African markets, building on four years of subscriber analytics at a Lagos telecom company.”
How to use the optional essay
Use it for a low grade in a core course, a gap in employment, or a three-year degree. Keep it factual and short. Since Marshall does not take recommendation letters, the optional essay is also a reasonable place to describe a leadership result that your resume cannot show.
The Marshall interview
Interviews are by invitation only. Marshall’s admissions page does not describe the format, and admissions consultancies describe past interviews as conversational. Prepare a two-minute account of your goals, two or three stories about leading people or projects, and a clear reason for choosing Los Angeles. Because there are no recommenders, expect the interviewer to probe your work experience in more detail.
What the admissions committee looks for
- Clear short-term and long-term goals, the only required essay topic.
- Professional experience; the class averaged six years.
- Academic readiness, shown through your transcript and, if you submit one, a test score.
- English fluency, shown by a test score or proof of English-medium study.
- Fit with a Los Angeles programme that recruits heavily from the Pacific Rim and Latin America.
USC Marshall MBA tuition and cost 2026-2027
| Cost | First year (2026-27) | Second year |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | $86,295 | $78,450 |
| USC central services and health fees | $1,922 | $1,844 |
| MBA programme fees | $3,000 | $400 |
| PRIME fee | $3,850 | None |
| Student health insurance (waivable) | $3,988 | $3,787 |
| Total | $99,055 | $84,481 |
These are Marshall’s estimates based on 2026-27 rates. The second-year figures are based on the same rates, and Marshall says to expect tuition to rise by about 3% to 5% a year, so budget a little more for year two. The total is about $183,500 for the two years before housing and living costs.
Costs not covered
- Housing and food in Los Angeles, which Marshall does not include in the table above.
- Transport. Many students in Los Angeles need a car.
- Books, a laptop and recruiting trips.
- Visa costs: the SEVIS I-901 fee, the visa application fee and flights.
- Extra proof of funds for a spouse or children.
USC Marshall MBA scholarships for international students
Every admitted candidate is considered for Marshall scholarships automatically, and you hear about any award at the same time as your admission decision. There is no separate form. Marshall does not publish amounts or say how many students receive awards.
| Award | Who can get it |
|---|---|
| Marshall merit scholarships | All admitted candidates are considered, including international students |
| Consortium (CGSM) Fellowship | U.S. citizens, permanent residents and DACA recipients only; covers full tuition and mandatory fees |
| Schoen Family Scholarship for Veterans | Veterans with at least three years of continuous active duty in the last 10 years |
| ROMBA Fellowship | LGBTQ+ candidates who complete an interest form |
For loans, Marshall says international students are not eligible for U.S. federal aid but may qualify for private loans with a U.S. co-signer. Its financing page does not list Prodigy Finance or MPOWER. If you have no U.S. co-signer, check those lenders yourself and confirm that they cover USC. For outside funding, see our guide to American scholarships for international students.
STEM designation and OPT
Marshall offers a STEM-certified specialization in management science within the full-time MBA. Students who complete it take STEM-qualified courses for roughly half of their electives. Completing it makes you eligible to apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, on top of the standard 12 months of OPT. If you want to work in the U.S. after graduating, plan your electives around this from the first year.
USC Marshall MBA salary and employment
Marshall reports these figures for the Class of 2025 full-time MBA:
- 71% employed within 90 days of graduation.
- Average salary: $142,184. Marshall does not publish a median.
- Average signing bonus: $35,896.
| Industry | Average starting salary |
|---|---|
| Consulting | $167,211 |
| Financial services | $148,744 |
| Technology | $136,056 |
| Entertainment | $117,667 |
The 71% placement rate is lower than at many peer schools, and Marshall does not split outcomes by citizenship or list its current top employers on the class profile page. International students should ask the career centre how many visa-holders in the last class found U.S. jobs, and in which industries.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Writing a generic goals essay. It is the only required essay, so a weak one sinks the application.
- Booking TOEFL without checking the English-medium waiver first.
- Applying in Round 3 or 4 and running out of time for the visa.
- Budgeting with tuition only. Fees and insurance add more than $12,000 in the first year, before rent.
- Assuming the MBA is STEM by default. Only the management science specialization is STEM-certified.
- Counting on a U.S. private loan without a U.S. co-signer.
Who should apply to USC Marshall, and who shouldn’t
Apply if you have several years of experience, want a career in Los Angeles or the Pacific Rim, and are interested in consulting, finance, technology or entertainment. The free application and optional test also make Marshall a sensible addition to your list if you are applying to several schools.
Think twice if you need a full scholarship to attend, since Marshall does not publish award amounts, or if you want the strongest U.S. job placement figures in this ranking band.
