Texas A&M Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines

Texas A&M Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
Texas A&M engineering graduate admission for fall 2027: EngineeringCAS, $148 international fee, GRE optional in Mechanical and ECE, IELTS 6.0 minimum, PhD stipend floor of $2,000 a month and a $41,016 nine-month cost estimate.

Texas A&M engineering graduate admission for international students goes through EngineeringCAS, a central application for every College of Engineering graduate programme at College Station. International applicants pay $148, need TOEFL or IELTS unless exempt, and send three letters and a short personal statement. The GRE depends on the department; Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering both list it as optional. For fall 2027, Mechanical Engineering wants PhD applications by 15 December 2026 for funding priority, and ECE closes international applications on 1 February 2027.

Texas A&M also costs far less than private schools near it in the rankings, such as Johns Hopkins and Northwestern. The university’s international office estimates $41,016 for a nine-month academic year for an engineering graduate student, tuition, fees, insurance and living costs included. Funded PhD students get at least $2,000 a month and have resident tuition and required fees paid. All facts below were checked on Texas A&M pages on 29 October 2026 unless another source is named.

Texas A&M engineering ranking

In the U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools edition, released on 7 April 2026, the Texas A&M College of Engineering is tied at No. 14 in Best Engineering Schools, sharing the place with UCLA. The college’s own news release from the same day says it remains in the top 10 among public universities. VnExpress International’s top 30 list (9 April 2026) shows the same position.

For an international applicant the size of the college matters as much as the rank. Texas A&M has one of the largest engineering colleges in the US, with departments that many peer schools do not have, including Petroleum, Nuclear, Ocean, and Biological and Agricultural Engineering.

Departments and graduate degrees

The College of Engineering offers the Master of Science (MS, usually thesis-based), the Master of Engineering (MEng, coursework-based) and the PhD, with a Doctor of Engineering in some areas. Departments that take graduate students through EngineeringCAS:

  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Biological and Agricultural Engineering
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Engineering Technology and Industrial Distribution
  • Industrial and Systems Engineering
  • Materials Science and Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Nuclear Engineering
  • Ocean Engineering
  • Petroleum Engineering

Not every department offers every degree, so confirm the exact degree on the college’s degree programmes page before you choose it in EngineeringCAS. The MS versus MEng choice matters for international students: the MS usually comes with a thesis and a closer link to a professor, which is how many master’s students later find research assistant pay, while the MEng is shorter and coursework only.

Texas A&M engineering graduate admission requirements

The college lists these EngineeringCAS requirements:

  1. Online application: create an EngineeringCAS account, select Texas A&M University and pick your programme.
  2. Personal statement: one to one and a half pages on your interest in the programme and how the degree fits your career goals.
  3. Transcripts: unofficial copies from every institution you attended for review. Official transcripts are required only after admission.
  4. Three letters of recommendation: submitted online by your recommenders.
  5. Application fee: $148 for international applicants ($90 Texas A&M fee plus a $58 EngineeringCAS processing fee).
  6. English proficiency: TOEFL or IELTS for international applicants who are not exempt.
  7. GRE: only if your department requires it.
  8. Resume or CV: optional at college level; some departments ask for it.

GRE policy by department

The college says GRE requirements vary by programme and that a strong score may help applicants with a lower GPA or from universities Texas A&M does not know well. Scores go to code 4119 for engineering and usually stay valid for five years.

DepartmentGRE for fall 2027 applicants
Mechanical EngineeringNot required; considered if submitted
Electrical and Computer EngineeringOptional for all applicants
Other departmentsCheck the department page; requirements vary

That advice about unfamiliar schools is aimed at many African applicants. If your university is rarely seen in US admissions offices, a good quantitative score is one of the few ways to give a committee a common yardstick.

English requirements

The Office of Admissions sets these university minimums for graduate applicants. Departments may set higher scores.

TestMinimum
TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026)80
TOEFL iBT (taken on or after 21 January 2026, new scale)4.5 overall, at least 4.0 in each section
TOEFL Essentials8.5
IELTS Academic6.0 overall (IELTS General not accepted)
GRE Verbal Reasoning146, subject to department approval

The admissions page does not list the Duolingo English Test, so do not rely on it. TOEFL and IELTS scores must be within two years, and the College of Engineering asks you to sit the test at least eight weeks before your department deadline. TOEFL scores go to code B887 for engineering applicants.

Citizens of countries on the Office of Admissions exemption list, and anyone who completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree entirely at an accredited US institution, meet the requirement without a test. I could not see the full country list, so check it before assuming Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya is included. Also note that Texas law sets a higher English standard for graduate assistants who teach. If you hope to work as a teaching assistant, a strong test score helps even if you are exempt for admission.

Transcripts and credentials

Texas A&M is strict about what counts as an official transcript, and these rules matter after admission:

  • An official transcript must carry an original signature or seal. Photocopies, scans, faxes and notarised copies are not accepted.
  • Consolidated transcripts and provisional mark-sheets are not treated as official. Request individual semester or year mark-sheets.
  • Transcripts not in English need an official English translation from a recognised translation service.
  • Credential evaluations are not accepted in place of transcripts. The page does not ask for WES.
  • Universities outside the US can email transcripts to admissions@tamu.edu.
  • Texas A&M keeps a bachelor’s degree equivalency list by country. If your country is not listed, ask admissions@tamu.edu.

Application deadlines for fall 2027

Each department sets its own dates. These are the published dates for two of the largest departments.

ProgrammeFall 2027 deadlineSpring entry deadline (each year)
Mechanical Engineering PhD15 Dec 2026 (funding priority); 1 Feb 2027 (final)1 Sep (international)
Mechanical Engineering MS1 Mar 20271 Sep
Mechanical Engineering MEng1 Jun 20271 Oct
Electrical and Computer Engineering (international, all degrees)1 Feb 20271 Jul

ECE also says you should submit by 1 February to be considered for departmental fellowships. In practice, international PhD applicants should treat mid-December as the real deadline in any department, because funding is decided first for early files.

Deadline

Mechanical Engineering PhD applicants who want funding should submit by 15 December 2026. ECE’s international deadline for fall 2027 is 1 February 2027.

PhD funding at Texas A&M engineering

Texas A&M funds most engineering PhD students through graduate assistantships: research (GAR), teaching (GAT) and non-teaching roles of about 20 hours a week. From 1 October 2026 the university minimum for a doctoral GAT or GAR on a 50% appointment is $2,000 a month. Departments and advisers often pay more, so ask for the figure in writing.

Under a university mandate, PhD students employed as GATs, GARs or graduate assistant lecturers have resident tuition and required university and college fees covered. The cover lasts at least through the fifth year for students admitted without a master’s degree, or the fourth year for those admitted with one. It does not cover course-specific fees, international student service fees or international student insurance, so budget for those yourself.

Other funding the college lists:

  • College and university fellowships worth from $500 to more than $30,000.
  • Competitive awards of $1,000 or more a year, which may bring in-state tuition rates with them. For a non-Texan that can cut tuition sharply, so ask your department whether its award qualifies.
  • External fellowships, many of them portable between universities.
  • Travel awards for conferences once you are enrolled.

To keep any assistantship or fellowship you must hold at least a 3.0 GPA and register full time (9 credit hours in fall and spring, 6 in summer).

MS and MEng funding

The college’s funding page speaks of “graduate students” without separating master’s from PhD, and the tuition mandate excludes master’s students. Most international MS and MEng students pay their own way. Some MS students later find research or grading work through their adviser, and an assistantship can bring resident tuition with it. Do not count on it when you show funds for your I-20.

Tuition and cost of attendance

Texas A&M International Student and Scholar Services publishes the estimate used for I-20 funding. Its 2026 figures for a College of Engineering graduate student for fall and spring (nine months) are:

Item9-month estimate
Tuition (non-resident rate)$14,641
Fees (College of Engineering graduate)$8,356
Health insurance$3,023
Living expenses$14,996
Total$41,016

Summer is not included. Engineering fees are higher than the $3,136 charged in standard graduate programmes, which is why the engineering line costs about $5,200 more. Actual costs depend on how many credit hours you take.

Costs not covered

  • Summer tuition and living costs if your programme runs through summer.
  • SEVIS and visa fees, plus flights to Houston or Austin and the drive to College Station.
  • Getting around College Station, which is a college town rather than a big city, so budget for a bike or shared rides.
  • Housing deposits and furniture.
  • For funded PhD students, international student fees and insurance, which the tuition mandate does not cover.

STEM OPT after graduation

Engineering degrees fall under CIP family 14 on the Department of Homeland Security’s STEM Designated Degree Program list. After an MS, MEng or PhD you can use 12 months of OPT and then apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension with an E-Verify employer. Confirm the CIP code on your I-20 with Texas A&M International Student and Scholar Services.

How to contact potential PhD advisers

At a large college like Texas A&M, a professor’s grant money often decides whether a PhD offer comes with funding, so a good email can matter. Keep it short.

  1. Find two or three matching labs: read each professor’s last two papers and lab page.
  2. Write a clear subject line: for example, “Fall 2027 PhD applicant: produced-water treatment, petroleum engineering”.
  3. Say one concrete thing: your closest project or result, and how it links to their work.
  4. Ask one question: whether they are taking students for fall 2027.
  5. Attach a one-page CV: and follow up only once after two weeks.

A short opening, for illustration only:

“Dear Dr [Name], I am a civil engineering graduate of [University], [Country], applying to the Texas A&M Civil Engineering PhD for fall 2027. My final-year project tested [material] for low-cost road bases in a tropical climate, and your recent work on [topic] uses a similar method. Are you considering new PhD students for fall 2027?”

How to write the personal statement for Texas A&M

The college asks for one to one and a half pages, so you have about 600 to 800 words. Be concrete.

  • First paragraph: the engineering problem you want to work on and why it matters to you, in plain language.
  • Middle: one or two projects, internships or jobs, with numbers where you have them (loads tested, code written, cost saved).
  • Fit: name faculty or research centres at Texas A&M and say what you would contribute.
  • Career: what you plan to do with the degree. For an MEng, a clear industry goal reads well.
  • If you have a weak semester, explain it in one or two sentences and move on.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Converting your GPA: Mechanical Engineering tells applicants to report the GPA their institution calculates, not to convert it to a 4.0 scale.
  • Uploading a consolidated transcript only: it will not count as official later. Request semester mark-sheets now.
  • Sitting the TOEFL late: take it at least eight weeks before the deadline.
  • Choosing the MEng by accident: if you want research, apply for the MS or PhD.
  • Three-year degrees: check the bachelor’s equivalency list by country before you pay the fee.
  • Assuming funding comes with admission: read your offer; master’s admits usually get no money.

Who should apply

Texas A&M suits applicants who want a top-20 engineering name at a public-university price, especially in petroleum, nuclear, ocean, civil, aerospace and agricultural engineering, fields that matter in many African economies. It is also a sensible PhD target for students with solid research experience who want a funded place at a very large college with many advisers.

It is less suited to students who want a big-city life or who need a Duolingo-only route. It also requires real planning if you want to work as a teaching assistant, because of the higher English standard for TAs.
