SMU Cox MBA ranking

U.S. News placed SMU Cox at No. 36 among full-time MBA programmes in its 2026 Best Business Schools ranking, released on 7 April 2026. It shares that spot with Texas A&M’s Mays Business School in College Station. Poets&Quants’ own 2026 ranking puts Cox at No. 42. For an international applicant, the ranking matters less than where Cox graduates actually work: its Class of 2025 went mostly into financial services, technology, consulting and real estate jobs.

SMU Cox MBA acceptance rate and class profile

Cox does not publish an acceptance rate; its admissions page simply calls the process highly selective. Poets&Quants, using data reported to U.S. News, gives these figures for the last three cycles:

IntakeApplicationsAcceptance rateYieldEnrolled
Fall 202586527.1%35.5%83
Fall 202476429.3%37.5%84
Fall 202366524.1%46.3%74

Applications rose by about 30% in two years, so admission has become a little harder to predict. A yield of about 35% means many admitted students go elsewhere, which is one reason Cox uses large merit scholarships to compete for the people it wants.

SMU Cox full-time MBA profileFigure
Class size83
Average GMAT Focus633
Average GRE318
Average GPA3.5

Average work experience5 years

These are the figures on Cox’s full-time MBA admissions page, labelled as the 2025 class. The class size of 83 matches the fall 2025 enrolment that Poets&Quants reports, so it describes the students who started in August 2025. Cox does not publish a median GMAT, a GMAT range or the share of women on that page.

SMU Cox MBA requirements for international students

  • A completed bachelor’s degree. Cox says a three-year bachelor’s from an international institution is accepted as equivalent, which helps applicants from countries with three-year degrees.
  • Unofficial transcripts from every institution where you took 12 or more credit hours. They must show the university, the degree date, the course of study and every course with grades. Non-English transcripts need a certified (Cox’s international page says notarized) English translation with the original.
  • A one-page, results-focused resume.
  • At least two years of full-time work experience. Most admitted students have three to six years.
  • Two professional references, given as names and contact details only. Cox does not ask for recommendation letters and contacts references only if it has questions, after telling you.
  • Three essays (two for most applicants plus an optional one; MA/MBA dual-degree applicants write two more).
  • GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment scores are optional. If you send one, it must be from the last five years.
  • TOEFL or IELTS if English is not your native language.
  • No application fee.

Test-optional policy

Cox says it will keep a test-optional policy for upcoming entry terms across its MBA and specialised master’s programmes. If you submit a score, the committee looks at your highest total and has no preference between the GMAT, GRE and EA. Admitted students who reported a score must send the official report.

Should you test anyway? I would, if your undergraduate grades are weak in quantitative subjects or come from a university the committee may not know well. A score near or above the 633 average gives Cox a number it can compare across countries, and that tends to help with merit scholarships, which are decided at the same time as admission.

English requirements

International applicants whose native language is not English must send TOEFL or IELTS results. The TOEFL institution code is 6660, and both tests are valid for two years. Cox’s international applicants page says it does not accept other score reports, and neither that page nor the admission criteria page lists a minimum score or a waiver. If you studied in English, for example in Nigeria, Ghana or Kenya, email gradadmissions@smu.edu before you book a test and ask whether you need one. Get the answer in writing.

Financial documents and the I-20

After admission, every international student completes a Financial Certification Form showing they can pay for the first year. Cox issues the I-20 only after you are admitted, pay the $2,000 tuition deposit and have your funding verified. Cox says submitting the form early significantly speeds up the I-20, which matters if your country has long visa interview waits.

SMU Cox MBA deadlines 2026-2027

These dates are for students starting in fall 2027. All deadlines are 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

Round 2 (scholarship priority)5 January 202712 March 202715 April 2027
Round 32 March 202716 April 20276 May 2027
Round 42 April 202728 May 2027Two weeks after admission

For international applicants

Rounds 3 and 4 are open to you on paper, but a Round 4 decision on 28 May 2027 leaves very little time for the Financial Certification Form, the I-20 and a visa interview before August. Apply by 5 January 2027 if you need both a scholarship and a visa.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Check your degree: Confirm your bachelor’s is complete. A three-year international degree is accepted.
  2. Decide on testing: Choose whether to send a GMAT, GRE or EA score, and book TOEFL or IELTS if you need one (TOEFL code 6660).
  3. Collect transcripts: Scan unofficial transcripts from every institution where you took 12 or more credit hours, with certified English translations.
  4. Tighten your resume to one page with numbers for each achievement.
  5. Choose two references and tell them Cox may call.
  6. Write the classmates essay, goals essay and, if needed, the optional essay.
  7. Submit by 5 January 2027. There is no fee.
  8. Interview with admissions, and possibly the Career Management Center, if invited.
  9. After admission: Pay the $2,000 deposit, send the Financial Certification Form and official transcripts within 30 days of the deposit, then apply for your visa.

SMU Cox MBA essays 2026-2027

EssayPrompt (summary)Limit
Classmates essayFive things you want your classmates to know about you, including academic and professional experience not shown elsewhere250 words
Career goalsYour short-term career goals and long-term professional ambitions, naming target industry, function, sector or organisation100 words
OptionalAnything else: a unique experience, work gaps, academic problemsNo limit stated
ReapplicantWhat you have done since your last application to strengthen your candidacy250 words
MA/MBA only (two essays)Your planned impact on the arts or non-profit community; a time your opinion of an arts or non-profit organisation changed250 words each

Five things your classmates should know

This is the most personal part of the application, and 250 words for five items means about 50 words each. Pick five facts that show different sides of you: one from work, one from your community or family, one skill or habit, one value, and one thing people would not guess. Write each as a small story with a concrete detail. Avoid listing traits (“I am hardworking”) because every applicant claims them.

For illustration: “1. I learned accounting at nine, keeping the sales book for my mother’s provisions shop in Ibadan, and I still balance every budget I own by hand first.”

Career goals in 100 words

Name a function, an industry and, ideally, the type of employer in Dallas or Texas that hires for it. Then add one sentence on where that leads in ten years and one on why your background makes the plan believable. Cox’s Class of 2025 placed mostly in financial services, technology, consulting and real estate, so goals in those areas are easy for the committee to picture.

For illustration: “In the short term I want to join a Dallas real estate investment firm as an associate in acquisitions, using the underwriting work I did on 40 retail sites in Accra.”

Optional essay

Use it for a gap in employment, a weak semester, a grading scale the committee may not recognise, or a choice not to submit a test score if your quantitative record needs explaining. Keep it short and factual even though no limit is given.

The SMU Cox interview

Interviews are by invitation after your file is reviewed. The first is with a member of the admissions team. Some applicants then have a second interview with the Career Management Center, which tests whether your goals are realistic for the Dallas market. Each lasts 30 to 45 minutes and can be virtual or in person, which suits applicants outside the U.S. Prepare a clear answer on why Dallas and why Cox, and know which employers you would target.

What the admissions committee looks for

  • At least two years of full-time work with measurable results on the resume.
  • Evidence you can handle the quantitative core, from grades, a test score or your job.
  • Goals specific enough that the career centre can see how to help you reach them.
  • A personality that will add to a class of about 80, shown in the five-things essay.
  • Professional references who will confirm what you claim if Cox calls.

SMU Cox MBA tuition and cost of attendance 2026-27

SMU is a private university, so there is no in-state discount. Cox lists these costs for a nine-month academic year:

Item (2026-27)Amount
Tuition$51,337
University and programme fees$11,100
Health centre fee$300
Total tuition and fees$63,067
Housing$24,528
Other living costs$11,347
Estimated total for the year$98,942
One dependantAdd $9,000
Each additional dependantAdd $4,500

Over two years, before scholarships and before any tuition increase for the second year, that is close to $200,000. This is the number to plan around when you prepare the Financial Certification Form, although the form itself asks for proof of the first year only.

Costs not covered

  • A $100 orientation fee and a $250 international student fee, which Cox says may apply.
  • The $2,000 deposit is part of tuition, but you pay it before your I-20 is issued.
  • Flights, the SEVIS fee and the visa application fee.
  • Transport around Dallas, which many students handle by buying a car.
  • Health insurance if the university plan is billed separately from the fees above; ask the financial aid office.

SMU Cox MBA scholarships for international students

Cox considers every admitted applicant, domestic and international, for merit scholarships during the admission review. There is no separate form. Cox says the average award for the Class of 2026 was over $70,000, and Rounds 1 and 2 are the priority deadlines for scholarships and fellowships. Cox’s admissions page does not name individual scholarships or say how many students receive one.

For loans, Cox mentions a variety of loan and private scholarship options and recommends the FAFSA, which is for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens. It does not name Prodigy Finance, MPOWER or any loan without a U.S. co-signer. Ask gradfinaid@smu.edu what international students used last year. For outside funding, see our list of American scholarships for international students.

STEM designation and OPT

SMU announced on 7 May 2021 that its Full-Time MBA and its working professional MBA programmes were STEM-designated, after the Board of Trustees approved the change. The MBA concentrations in supply chain management and business analytics already had the designation. For an F-1 student, a STEM-designated degree means you can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension after the first 12 months of OPT, so up to three years of U.S. work after graduation. Confirm the CIP code on your I-20 with SMU’s international office when you enrol.

SMU Cox MBA salary and employment

Cox’s employment report for the two-year full-time MBA Class of 2025 gives these results:

  • 82% accepted a job within three months of graduation, and 88% within six months.
  • Median base salary $123,000; mean $126,000.
  • Median signing bonus $20,000; mean $25,000.
  • 69% of accepted jobs came through school-facilitated channels.
  • Internships for the Class of 2026 paid an average of $8,400 a month.
IndustryShare of classMedian base

Technology26%$125,000
Consulting12%$175,000
Real estate12%$72,500
Energy, healthcare, manufacturing, consumer goods5% eachNot disclosed

By function, finance and accounting took 36% of graduates and general management 24%. The report lists about 200 companies that hired Cox full-time MBA students for jobs or internships over three years, including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Deloitte, Amazon, Microsoft, Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey, Kearney and Bank of America. The report does not separate outcomes for international students, so ask the career centre how many F-1 graduates found sponsored jobs.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Assuming test-optional means test-free for scholarships. A strong score can still move your award.
  • Leaving out transcripts from a short programme where you took 12 or more credit hours.
  • Sending translations that are not certified.
  • Writing five things your classmates should know as five adjectives.
  • Using the 100-word goals essay for background instead of goals.
  • Applying in Round 4 and running out of time for the I-20 and visa.
  • Forgetting that the deposit is due before the I-20 is issued.

Who should apply to SMU Cox, and who shouldn’t

Apply if you want a STEM MBA with a small class, have two to six years of experience, and see your future in Texas finance, real estate, technology or consulting. The test-optional policy and zero fee make Cox cheap to try, and the scholarship averages are large.

Think twice if you want a global brand for a job outside the U.S., or if you cannot cover close to $99,000 a year without knowing your scholarship. Applicants without two years of full-time work are not eligible.
