Ibadan Descendants Union Scholarship 2027: Full Tuition for Ibadan Indigenes, Requirements and Deadline
The Ibadan Descendants Union (IDU USA) scholarship pays full tuition for Ibadan indigenes in Nigerian higher institutions. Eligibility, GPA, documents, the email to use and the 21 August 2027 deadline.

The Ibadan Descendants Union scholarship pays the full tuition of financially disadvantaged students of Ibadan origin at Nigerian universities and other higher institutions. It is run by the Ibadan Descendants’ Union of Greater Washington USA (IDU USA), and the money goes straight to your school. You apply by email with a transcript, a recommendation letter from your HOD or Dean, a short statement, a photo and proof of need.

The 2026 round closed on 21 August 2026. The deadline for the 2027 round is 21 August 2027. The union’s windows are short and have moved between March, July and August over the years, and late emails are not considered, so keep your documents ready.

(based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). Past windows were short and moved around: 1 to 31 July in 2024 and 15 to 31 March in 2025. One 2026 listing gave 31 August instead of 21 August; the earlier date is the safe one to plan for.

Strict window

In past rounds the union said applications sent outside the window, by Nigerian time, would not be considered, and only successful candidates are contacted. Applying is free. Never pay anyone who offers to submit, “fast track” or guarantee your application.

Because the window has opened as early as March, the safest plan is to have the full package ready from the start of each year and to send it as soon as the call appears, rather than waiting for August.

Who can apply for the IDU scholarship

  1. Origin: you are a native of Ibadan. You will give your family house or compound address and local government area.
  2. Study: you are enrolled in, or have been accepted by, a Nigerian university or other higher institution as a full-time student.
  3. Standing: you are in good academic and moral standing.
  4. Need: you can show evidence of financial need.
  5. Grades: your most recent official transcript shows a cumulative GPA of at least 3.65/4.0 or 4.65/5.0.

Grade bars have changed between rounds. The 2025 and 2026 listings give 3.65/4.0 or 4.65/5.0, while the 2024 call and one 2026 listing give 3.25. Go by the figure in the union’s current call. Both men and women can apply.

To put the higher bar in context: on the 5.0 scale most Nigerian universities use, 4.50 and above is First Class, so 4.65 means a strong First Class record. If you are on 4.0 to 4.6, watch for the union’s current figure; in a year when it is 3.25, you may qualify comfortably.

Eligibility edge cases

  • Raised outside Ibadan: the test is origin. If your family house or compound is in Ibadan, you meet the wording even if you grew up in Lagos or abroad.
  • From elsewhere in Oyo State: students from Ogbomoso, Oyo town, Iseyin or Saki are Oyo indigenes but not Ibadan natives, so they fall outside this award.
  • Polytechnics and colleges: the call says “other higher institutions”, so a full-time polytechnic or college of education student with a qualifying GPA fits the wording.
  • Private universities: not excluded. Since the award is full tuition, the union may look harder at need for a high-fee school.
  • Part-time, sandwich and distance learning: excluded by the full-time rule.
  • Postgraduate students: the listings do not mention postgraduate study. Ask by email before you apply.

Documents and details to include in your IDU email

ItemNotes
Recent passport photographPassport size, clear
Official transcriptMost recent academic year, showing your cumulative GPA
Evidence of needAnything that shows your family cannot meet your fees
Short statementA brief paragraph: why you should be selected, your course and how it will benefit society
Recommendation letterFrom your Head of Department or your Dean

In the body of the email, the union has asked for these details:

  • Full name (surname, first name, middle name)
  • Family house or compound address and local government area
  • Name and full address of your institution
  • Current level or year of study
  • Year of admission and expected graduation year
  • A working email address

The 2024 call also told applicants not to send certificates, awards or membership of civic groups, so send only the items above. For help with the HOD letter, see our recommendation letter guide.

What counts as evidence of need

The union has not listed specific documents, so use what honestly shows your situation. Common choices are a letter from a parent or guardian explaining their work and income, a death certificate if a parent has died, a letter from your religious leader or community head confirming your circumstances, or a statement of outstanding school fees from your bursary office. One or two clear documents are better than a pile of loose papers.

How to write the IDU short statement

The union asks for a brief paragraph, not an essay. In about 150 to 250 words, cover three points in this order: why you should be selected (your grades and your situation), what you study, and how your course will benefit society. The readers are Ibadan people abroad giving back to home, so a link to Ibadan itself helps.

A sample opening: “I am a 300 level Nursing student at the University of Ibadan with a CGPA of 4.71, and the only child of a widowed mother who sells foodstuff at Bodija market. After graduation I plan to work in a primary health centre in my local government, where one nurse currently serves several wards.” It gives the grade, the need and the benefit to the community in two sentences. Use your own facts.

Avoid long accounts of hardship and general praise of education. Put your CGPA in the first line, since the grade bar is the first thing the panel checks.

How to apply for the Ibadan Descendants Union scholarship

  1. Collect the documents early: ask your HOD or Dean for the letter and request your transcript as soon as your results are out.
  2. Write your statement: one solid paragraph on why you, your course and its benefit to society.
  3. Scan everything: save each item as a clear PDF or image with a sensible file name.
  4. Write the email: put your personal and school details in the body and attach the files.
  5. Send it inside the window: email Iduofgreaterwashington@gmail.com before 21 August 2027.

A clean email layout

Use a clear subject line such as “IDU USA Scholarship Application 2027: Adeyemi Kehinde, LAUTECH”. In the body, list the six details the union asked for as short lines, then one sentence naming the attachments. Attach five files named plainly (“Transcript-Adeyemi-Kehinde.pdf”, “HOD-letter-Adeyemi-Kehinde.pdf” and so on). Paste the statement into the body as well as attaching it, in case the reader opens the email on a phone.

Most free email services limit attachments to around 20 to 25MB per message, so compress large scans. Send from an address you check often, since only successful candidates hear back.

What happens after you apply

The union reviews the emails received inside the window and contacts only the students it selects. It has not published how many awards it makes, how it scores applications or when results come out. Successful students have their tuition paid directly to the school, so expect the union to confirm your registration and fee details with your institution.

If you hear nothing by the end of the year, assume you were not selected and apply again in the next window with an updated transcript.

Costs tuition will not cover

The award is tuition only. Hostel or rent, feeding, books, transport, departmental dues and project costs stay with you. At public universities, where tuition for Nigerian students is often a smaller part of the yearly bill than accommodation and upkeep, plan for those from another source.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sending the email after the window closes, or before it opens.
  • Attaching a statement of result instead of a transcript that shows the cumulative GPA.
  • Getting the recommendation letter from a lecturer instead of the HOD or Dean.
  • Adding certificates, awards and club memberships the union said not to send.
  • Leaving out the family compound address, which is how the union checks Ibadan origin.

Who should apply, and who should not

Apply if your family is from Ibadan, you are a full-time student at a Nigerian university or other higher institution, your cumulative GPA meets the current bar, and you can show your family struggles with fees. It is most valuable to students at schools where tuition is a large part of the bill.

Skip it if you are not an Ibadan native, you study part time, or your GPA is below the figure in the current call. Freshers with no university result should email the union first rather than send an incomplete application.

FAQ

Can I apply for the IDU scholarship as a fresh student?

It covers your full tuition, paid to your school on your behalf. No fixed naira amount is published.

When is the Ibadan Descendants Union scholarship deadline?

The deadline is 21 August 2027. The window has been short in every round, so send your email well before that date.
