UC San Diego Jacobs Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines

UC San Diego Jacobs Engineering Graduate Admission 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GRE, Funding and Deadlines
UC San Diego’s Jacobs School (No. 9 in U.S. News 2026 engineering) mostly does not require the GRE, charges international applicants $155, and funds most PhD students while MS students pay their own way. Here are English minimums, 2026-27 costs and fall 2027 deadlines by department.

UC San Diego Jacobs engineering graduate admission for international students runs department by department. You apply through UC San Diego’s graduate application, pick one department in the Jacobs School of Engineering, and that department decides. Most Jacobs departments no longer ask for the GRE, the university minimum for English is TOEFL iBT 85 (4.5 on the new TOEFL scale) or IELTS 7, and the application fee for international applicants is $155, with no university fee waiver for international students.

On money, PhD students are usually funded and master’s students usually pay their own way. Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, for example, says a typical PhD salary is about $3,600 a month plus tuition and fees, while MS students get little support. For fall 2027 entry, PhD deadlines fall between late November and mid December 2026, and MS deadlines run from early January to July 2027 depending on the department. Everything below was checked on UC San Diego’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering ranking

In the U.S. News 2026 Best Graduate Schools edition (Best Engineering Schools, released 7 April 2026), the Jacobs School of Engineering is ranked No. 9 in the United States, not tied. The school’s own page also describes it as the second largest engineering school in California, with 288 faculty and more than 9,100 students across six departments.

Rank matters less than fit for graduate study. A PhD is an apprenticeship with one adviser, so the strength of the lab you join counts for more than the school’s overall position. For a self-funded MS, the useful questions are cost, the job market in San Diego and California, and whether the curriculum matches the job you want.

Departments and graduate programmes at Jacobs

Jacobs offers the MS, the Master of Advanced Study (MAS), the MEng and the PhD, and Bioengineering runs MD/MS and MD/PhD tracks with the School of Medicine. Admission is handled by each department, and almost all of them admit for fall only.

DepartmentMain graduate options
BioengineeringMS (thesis or exam option), MS Med, MEng, MEng in medical device engineering, PhD
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)MS and PhD in computer science; MS and PhD in computer engineering (apply to one only)
Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE)MS and PhD across 13 disciplines; four “impacted” areas must be chosen at application
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE)MS and PhD
NanoEngineering and Chemical EngineeringMS and PhD in chemical engineering and nanoengineering
Structural EngineeringMS in structural engineering, structural health monitoring, or geotechnical engineering; PhD

In ECE, the four impacted areas are Computer Engineering (EC79), Electronic Circuits and Systems (EC78), Intelligent Systems, Robotics and Control (EC80), and Machine Learning and Data Science (EC93). The department says you cannot switch into these later, so pick the right code on day one.

GRE requirement by department

Older advice online still says you need the GRE. At UC San Diego it is optional or unwanted in nearly every Jacobs department.

DepartmentGRE policy (latest cycle published)
ECENot required for MS or PhD for fall 2027
CSENot required for MS or PhD (fall 2026 page); valid scores may be sent
MAEOptional, no minimum; admitted students typically sit at the 85th to 90th percentile in quantitative if they submit
BioengineeringNot required, and the department recommends you do not submit scores
NanoEngineering and Chemical EngineeringWaived for all applicants; scores may still be sent
Structural EngineeringWaived for MS; not required but strongly recommended for PhD

If you have a strong quantitative score, it can help in MAE and Structural Engineering PhD admissions. In Bioengineering, leave it out. UC San Diego’s GRE institution code is 4836.

English language requirements

The university minimums, repeated on the ECE fall 2027 page, are:

TestMinimum
TOEFL iBT4.5 on the new scale (85 on the previous 0 to 120 scale)
IELTS AcademicBand 7
Duolingo English Test120
PTE Academic65

Some departments add speaking minimums. Bioengineering asks for TOEFL speaking 23, IELTS speaking 7 and a Duolingo speaking subscore of 150. You are exempt if you hold a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree with a grade of B (3.0) or better from a university where English is the sole language of instruction, checked against the IAU World Higher Education Database (WHED). Many applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and other English-medium systems qualify, but confirm that your university appears in WHED and that your transcript or a registrar’s letter shows English as the medium.

Application fee and fee waivers

The UC San Diego graduate application fee is $135 for US citizens, permanent residents and undocumented applicants, and $155 for international applicants. The Graduate Division says international applicants are not eligible for its fee waiver. A few departments run their own limited waivers. CSE offers a small number for international PhD applicants based on contributions to diversity, social justice work or overcoming adversity, and you must submit at least two weeks before the deadline to request one.

Deadlines for fall 2027 entry

ECE has already published its fall 2027 dates. For the other departments, the dates below are last cycle’s dates moved forward one year (based on this year’s date; confirm on the official page when the call opens). Applications for fall 2027 opened on 2 September 2026.

Deadline warning

Bioengineering closes earliest, on 24 November 2026 for every degree level, and ECE deadlines are 11:59 pm California time. CSE fee waiver requests need your application in at least two weeks before the deadline.

PhD funding at UC San Diego Jacobs

Jacobs says most PhD students are supported through research and teaching assistantships, and it encourages students to apply for outside fellowships too. Department pages give more detail:

  • MAE: PhD students are typically funded by fellowships, teaching assistantships or graduate student researcher positions, at a typical salary of about $3,600 a month plus tuition and fees.
  • Bioengineering: Most full-time PhD students are supported through fellowships, traineeships and research assistantships that include a stipend plus tuition, fees and health insurance.
  • NanoEngineering and Chemical Engineering: PhD support exists but is described as limited, and research assistantships depend on a match with a faculty member who has grant money.

Under the university catalogue rules, a teaching assistant or researcher appointed at 25% time or more for a full quarter qualifies for remission of tuition and fees. Ask the department in writing whether your offer also covers nonresident supplemental tuition, because that charge is large for international students. Get the full package, including the number of guaranteed years, in your offer letter before you accept.

MS funding: plan to pay yourself

Every department page we checked says the same thing. MAE says assistantships are rare and very competitive for MS students. Bioengineering offers no financial support to MS or MEng students. NanoEngineering and Chemical Engineering offers none either, although MS students can apply for TA posts, which bring some fee help at 25% time or more. Treat any TA job as a bonus and leave it out of your budget.

Tuition and costs for 2026-27

UC graduate tuition is set by the University of California Office of the President. The 2026-27 schedule lists these annual systemwide charges for graduate academic students such as MS and PhD students:

Charge (2026-27)Annual amount
Systemwide tuition$13,722
Student services fee$1,344
Nonresident supplemental tuition (international students)$15,102
Total before campus fees and health insurance$30,168

UC San Diego adds campus-based fees and the graduate student health insurance plan on top of this, and you need rent, food and transport in one of California’s more expensive cities. UC San Diego’s Financial Aid Office publishes a graduate cost of attendance, but its figures did not load when we checked, so take the current number from that page before you prepare your bank statement. Self-supporting programmes such as the MAS degrees set their own fees.

Named fellowships open to international students

Jacobs does not publish one central fellowship that international applicants apply to separately. Departments nominate admitted PhD students for university and departmental fellowships, so your application itself is the fellowship application. Outside the university, look at your own government’s schemes and at country-specific programmes such as the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, which is run through US embassies and commissions in each country.

STEM OPT after graduation

Engineering and computer science degrees normally fall under the US Department of Homeland Security STEM designated degree list, which allows a 24-month STEM OPT extension after the standard 12 months of OPT. Eligibility depends on the CIP code printed on your I-20, so ask the department for the code of your exact programme before you enrol.

Application documents

  • Statement of purpose: required by every department; it is the single most read part of a PhD file.
  • Letters of recommendation: usually three, from people who have seen your academic or research work.
  • Transcripts: uploaded with the application; the department confirms official records after admission. The pages we checked do not ask for a WES evaluation.
  • GPA: the university minimum is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. MAE says most admits are between 3.5 and 4.0 and applicants below 3.2 are rarely admitted. CENG/NANO says a typical admit has 3.4 or higher.
  • English test scores: sent directly by ETS, IELTS or Duolingo unless you meet the WHED exemption.
  • CV: list publications, projects, internships and any final year project with your supervisor’s name.

How to contact potential PhD advisers

At UC San Diego, PhD admission is decided by the department committee, but a faculty member who wants you can tip the decision, especially where research assistantships depend on a professor’s grants. Read two or three recent papers from each lab first. Then write a short email: who you are, the paper you read and one specific question or idea, how your project connects, and a request to know whether they are taking students for fall 2027. Attach your CV, not your transcript.

Sample opening (for illustration): “Dear Professor [Surname], I read your 2025 paper on soft robotic grippers and tried a simplified version of your contact model in my final year project at the University of Lagos. I am applying to the MAE PhD programme for fall 2027 and would like to know whether you expect to take new students.”

Send it in October or November, before the PhD deadlines. One polite follow-up after two weeks is fine. No reply is common and does not mean rejection.

How to write the statement of purpose for UC San Diego

Open with the research question that pulls you. In the second section, show evidence: your final year project, a publication, an internship, or a lab skill, described with what you did and what you found. Then name two or three Jacobs faculty members and explain how your interests match their current work. Close with your career goal and why a UC San Diego degree gets you there. Keep it to the length the application box allows, write in plain English, and cut anything a professor could read in any other applicant’s file.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Choosing the wrong ECE code. The four impacted areas cannot be entered later.
  • Missing the early Bioengineering date. 24 November catches people who plan around mid December.
  • Converting your CGPA yourself. Report your grades on your university’s own scale, such as a Nigerian 5.0 scale or a first class/second class upper classification, and let the committee read the transcript. Do not invent a 4.0 figure.
  • Assuming the English waiver applies. Your university must appear in WHED as English-medium and your grade must be B or better.
  • Counting on an MS assistantship. Departments say plainly that MS funding is rare.
  • Three-year degrees. Most African engineering degrees run four or five years and are fine. If you hold a three-year bachelor’s, ask the department before paying the $155 fee.

Costs not covered by a typical offer

  • Application fees of $155 per programme, plus test fees and score reports
  • The SEVIS I-901 fee and the US visa application fee
  • Flights, first month’s rent and a deposit before your first stipend payment arrives
  • Campus fees and health insurance for self-funded MS students
  • Summer support for some PhD students if the offer covers only the academic year
  • A laptop, books and conference travel not paid by your lab

Who should apply

Apply for the PhD if you have a clear research interest that matches at least two Jacobs labs, a strong GPA (MAE says 3.5 or above is typical), and some research evidence such as a thesis or paper. The PhD is where UC San Diego’s funding is.

Apply for the MS only if you or a sponsor can cover roughly $30,000 a year in systemwide charges plus campus fees, insurance and San Diego living costs. I would not apply for the MS hoping to find a TA job to pay the bills; the departments themselves warn against that.
