Tufts University admission requirements for international students are the Common App (or Coalition or QuestBridge) application, the Tufts short answers, school records with national exam results, one teacher and one counselor recommendation, and an English test if your schooling was not in English. SAT and ACT scores are optional. Tufts admitted 3,957 first-year students for fall 2024 from just over 34,000 applicants, an acceptance rate of about 11.5%, and it ties for No. 31 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition.
What sets Tufts apart for international families is aid. Tufts says it meets 100% of the demonstrated financial need of every admitted student, regardless of citizenship, and in 2024-25 it gave institutional aid averaging $80,079 to 231 nonresident undergraduates. However, Tufts reads aid requests when it decides (it is need-aware), it offers no merit scholarships, and you must ask for aid when you apply or you lose it for all four years. The 2026-27 cost of attendance is $97,152 before travel and insurance. For fall 2027, Early Decision I closes on 2 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision close on 4 January 2027.

Tufts University ranking
Tufts ties with Boston College at No. 31 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition. Boston University follows at No. 34 and Northeastern at No. 42. For an international applicant the more useful comparison is that Tufts is the only one of those four Boston-area schools that promises to meet full need for admitted international students.
Tufts acceptance rate and class profile
These figures come from Tufts’ Common Data Set 2024-2025, which describes the class that entered in fall 2024. It is the latest edition posted by Tufts’ Office of Institutional Research.
| Measure (fall 2024 first-years) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Applications | about 34,300 |
| Admitted | 3,957 |
| Enrolled | 1,801 |
| Acceptance rate | about 11.5% |
| SAT middle 50% (38% of enrollees submitted) | 1480 to 1540 |
| ACT middle 50% (18% submitted) | 33 to 35 |
| Total undergraduates | 7,126 |
Tufts does not post a separate international acceptance rate on its own pages, and it did not break out Early Decision admits in the CDS. Because Tufts is need-aware, an international applicant who asks for large aid competes for a limited budget, so the effective rate for that group is likely lower than 11.5%. That should not stop you asking for aid. It should push you to make every other part of the file as strong as possible.
Tufts tuition for international students in 2026-27
Everyone pays the same tuition. Tufts publishes this cost of attendance for first-years and entering transfers living on campus in 2026-27:
| Item (2026-27) | Cost |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $74,862 |
| Fees (health and wellness, activity) | $1,696 |
| Housing (average) | $11,220 |
| Food (average) | $9,374 |
| Books and supplies | $1,000 |
| Personal expenses | $1,846 |
| Total | $97,152 |
| Travel | varies by distance from home |
| Health insurance | extra, unless covered by a family plan that qualifies |
Housing and food are averages, not exact bills. Juniors and seniors living on campus have a higher budget of $98,520. The Tufts Tuition Pact, which makes tuition free from fall 2026 for US families earning under $150,000, is for US students only.
Does Tufts give financial aid to international students?
Yes, need-based aid. Tufts states that it meets 100% of the demonstrated need of every admitted student, regardless of citizenship. The 2024-25 Common Data Set shows 231 nonresident undergraduates receiving institutional aid that year, an average of $80,079 each and $18.5 million in total. That is real money, and it is why Tufts belongs on the list of any strong international student who needs help.
The rules are strict, though:
- Need-aware admission: Tufts’ admissions blog places Tufts in the group of colleges that are need-aware and meet full need. Asking for aid can affect an international applicant’s chances.
- Ask at the start: you must say on your application that you want aid. Tufts will not consider you if you ask only after admission.
- First year decides all four: international students who do not receive aid in their first year are generally not eligible later.
- No merit scholarships: Tufts gives no merit-based scholarships to undergraduates.
- UWC graduates: the Davis United World Scholars Program adds a need-based grant of up to $10,000 a year.
CSS Profile or ISFAA at Tufts
International applicants seeking aid file the CSS Profile. If the CSS Profile fee or online form would cause real hardship, you can instead upload the free International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) with your tax documents through your Tufts applicant account. Tufts gives no CSS Profile fee waivers to applicants. If you are admitted after filing the ISFAA, you must complete the CSS Profile within 5 to 7 days of your decision, using a fee waiver code that appears on your applicant status page, and then send tax documents through College Board’s IDOC.
| Round | CSS Profile (or ISFAA) | Foreign tax returns, in English and US dollars |
|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I | 16 November 2026 | 1 December 2026 |
| Early Decision II | 15 January 2027 | 1 February 2027 |
| Regular Decision | 1 February 2027 | 15 February 2027 |
Tufts does not accept documents by email. If your family has no tax return because income is informal, explain that in writing through IDOC and supply whatever proof of income exists, such as an employer letter.
Testing and English requirements
Tufts is test-optional for first-year applicants and has no minimum or cut-off score. Self-reported scores are due on the same date as the school report for each round.
You need an English test if English is not your primary language, unless you have studied at an English-medium school for at least three years. Tufts accepts:
- IELTS
- TOEFL
- PTE
- Duolingo English Test
Tufts lists no minimum or recommended scores on its international FAQ page. An InitialView or Duolingo interview can be added to show your spoken English. Students who were in ESOL classes may be asked for proof of proficiency even after three years in English-medium schooling.
What goes into a Tufts application
- Application platform: Common App, Coalition Application on Scoir, or QuestBridge.
- Tufts short answer questions.
- Transcripts: four years of internal results (three years of grades plus current marks), sent directly by your school. Photocopies are not accepted.
- National exam results and predicted marks for exams still to come, such as WAEC, A Levels or IB.
- Senior year grades and mid-year grades by 15 February 2027.
- Counselor recommendation and School Report.
- One teacher recommendation from a core academic subject.
- English test result, unless waived.
- Portfolio for BFA and combined BFA plus BA or BS applicants.
- Fee: $75, waived if you are an international citizen applying for need-based aid.
Documents must be in English. Translations must come from an English teacher, a school official, a professional translator or an EducationUSA office, never from you or your family.

Aid warning
Tick the financial aid box when you submit. Tufts will not consider an international student for aid after admission, and an international student who starts without aid generally cannot get it in later years.
How to write the Tufts supplemental essays
According to a 2026-27 summary by an admissions consultancy, all applicants answer a 150-word question on how they have learned about and engaged with Tufts, plus one 200-word school-specific prompt. Arts and Sciences applicants describe a favourite assignment from the past two years. Engineering applicants describe a project they built, designed or improved and their role in it. SMFA and combined-degree applicants write about a piece in their portfolio. Check the exact wording in the Common App before you write.
For the 150-word “engagement” answer, give evidence. Name the virtual session you attended, the student blog post that changed your mind, or the professor whose work you read, and say what you did with that information. Do not pad it with campus clichés.
For the 200-word school prompt, choose a piece of work small enough to describe in detail. A sample opening for the engineering prompt, for illustration only: “Our school’s borehole pump failed every dry season, so in Year 11 three of us took apart the float switch on a Saturday and found that the problem was not the motor at all…” Then say what you changed, what went wrong, and what you would do now.
What happens after you apply
- Applicant Status Page: Tufts sends login details. Use it to check for missing items and to upload the ISFAA or portfolio.
- Aid file: meet the CSS Profile and tax document dates for your round.
- Decision: mid-December 2026 (ED I), early February 2027 (ED II) or by 1 April 2027 (RD). Aid packages come with or soon after the decision once your file is complete.
- CSS Profile if admitted: ISFAA filers complete it within 5 to 7 days.
- Enrol: ED students commit and withdraw other applications; RD students reply by 1 May 2027.
- I-20 and visa: document the funds you will use (your family contribution plus the Tufts grant), then book the F-1 interview.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Leaving the aid box unticked and hoping to ask later.
- Applying ED with an aid request but no clear idea of what the family can pay each year.
- Missing the 16 November CSS Profile date in ED I because it falls two weeks after the application.
- Asking a relative to translate transcripts.
- Sending photocopied transcripts instead of school-sent records.
- Writing the “Why Tufts” answer about Boston rather than about Tufts.
Costs that Tufts aid does not cover
Tufts builds its aid around the cost of attendance, so a full-need award covers most of the $97,152. You will still face costs outside that budget or outside what the grant pays:
- The family contribution Tufts calculates from your CSS Profile, which can be more than you expect.
- Health insurance, if your family plan does not qualify.
- Flights, the SEVIS fee and visa fees before you arrive.
- Warm clothing for Massachusetts winters.
- Housing during winter break if you stay in the US.
- A laptop if you do not already have one.
Majors and strengths
Tufts combines a liberal arts college feel with a research university. International relations is its best-known undergraduate major, and Tufts is also strong in economics, biology, computer science, community health and engineering. The SMFA lets art students take a BFA or a combined degree with Arts and Sciences or Engineering. Graduate schools include the Fletcher School of law and diplomacy and medical, dental and veterinary schools.
Campus and city
The main campus sits on a hill in Medford and Somerville, a few miles north-west of downtown Boston, with a Green Line stop close by. SMFA students study at the museum school in Boston, and the health sciences schools are in Boston and Grafton. Campus life is residential, and Boston and Cambridge are close for internships and weekends.
Graduate admissions at Tufts
Graduate applicants apply directly to the relevant school: the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering, the Fletcher School, the Friedman School of Nutrition, or the medical, dental and veterinary schools. Deadlines, fees, English minimums and funding differ by programme. PhD students are usually funded; most master’s students pay their own way or rely on outside scholarships. The undergraduate full-need promise does not apply to graduate study.

Who should apply to Tufts
Apply if you have top grades, you need financial aid, and you want a mid-sized university close to Boston with strong international relations, sciences or engineering. Tufts’ full-need promise makes it one of the better reaches for families who cannot pay the full price.
Think carefully if you need aid and Tufts is your only reach. Being need-aware means some strong aid applicants are turned down. Pair it with need-blind schools such as MIT or Amherst, and with generous meet-need schools such as Duke and Yale.
FAQ on Tufts University admission requirements for international students
What is the Tufts acceptance rate for international students?
Tufts does not publish a separate international rate on its own pages. The overall first-year rate for fall 2024 was about 11.5%, and international students who ask for aid face a need-aware review.
Does Tufts give full scholarships to international students?
Tufts has no merit scholarships, but it meets 100% of demonstrated need for admitted international students. For a family with very low income, that can cover close to the full cost.
Is Tufts need-blind for international students?
No. Tufts describes itself as need-aware and meeting full need, so asking for aid can affect your admission decision. You must still ask when you apply.
What English test score does Tufts require?
Tufts accepts IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo but lists no minimum score. Applicants with at least three years at an English-medium school do not need a test.
Sources and updates
I checked these details on Tufts’ own pages on 29 October 2026: the admissions international student aid page, the international applicant FAQ, the checklist and deadlines page, the Student Financial Services pages for the 2026-27 cost of attendance and aid deadlines, the president’s announcement of the Tufts Tuition Pact, an Inside Admissions blog post on need-aware policies, and the Common Data Set 2024-2025. The U.S. News page could not be opened, so the rank comes from published reports of the 2027 edition. The supplemental essay wording comes from a consultant’s 2026-27 summary and should be checked in the application. We update this guide when Tufts changes its dates, costs or aid rules.
