Boston College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Boston College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Boston College admitted about 16.2% of first-year applicants for fall 2024 and gives international students no need-based aid, only the full-tuition Gabelli Presidential Scholarship. Here are the $95,258 cost for 2026-27, English and test rules, the essay and the 1 November 2026 and 4 January 2027 deadlines.

Boston College admission requirements for international students are the standard Common App file plus three extras: an English test score (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo), proof after admission that your family can pay, and a lot of patience with the money question. SAT and ACT scores are optional. Boston College admitted 5,632 of 34,779 first-year applicants for fall 2024, an acceptance rate of about 16.2%, and it ties for No. 31 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition.

The hard part for most international families is cost. Boston College (BC) charges $75,070 in tuition for 2026-27, and tuition, fees, a standard room and meals come to $95,258. BC’s international admissions page says plainly that need-based aid is not available to students who are not US citizens or permanent residents. The one large award you can compete for is the Gabelli Presidential Scholarship, a full-tuition merit award given to about 18 first-year students a year, and you must apply by 1 November 2026 to be considered. For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision I closes on 1 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision close on 4 January 2027.

Boston College ranking

In the U.S. News 2027 Best Colleges edition, Boston College tied with Tufts University at No. 31 among National Universities. BC’s own news office had reported a No. 36 placement in the previous edition, so this is a five-place rise. Boston University sits just behind at No. 34, and Northeastern is at No. 42, which means four of the city’s private universities fall inside the top 45.

Rankings tell you little about whether BC fits you. What they do tell an international family is that BC competes for the same students as schools that offer far more aid, which is worth remembering when you build your list.

Boston College acceptance rate and class profile

The most recent Common Data Set that BC has published is the 2024-25 edition, which covers the class that started in fall 2024.

Measure (fall 2024 first-years)Figure
Applications34,779
Admitted5,632
Enrolled2,394
Acceptance rateabout 16.2%
Early Decision applications4,288
Early Decision admits1,434 (about 33%)

Admitted from the waitlist352
SAT middle 50% (30% of enrollees submitted)1460 to 1520
ACT middle 50% (15% submitted)33 to 35

BC does not publish an acceptance rate for international applicants on its own pages. The ED rate looks attractive at about one in three, but ED is binding, and BC will not give an international student need-based aid to make an ED offer affordable. I would only apply ED if your family has already confirmed it can pay about $100,000 a year from its own money.

Boston College tuition for international students in 2026-27

International students pay the same rates as US students. BC’s trustees set 2026-27 tuition at $75,070, a 3.76% rise in total charges. The billed costs for a first-year student in a standard residence hall are:

Item (2026-27)Cost
Tuition$75,070
Health fee ($646) and student activity fee ($708)$1,354
Housing, standard first-year hall ($5,635 a semester)$11,270
Residential meal plan ($3,782 a semester)$7,564
Tuition, fees, room and board$95,258
First-year orientation fee (once)$670
Student ID (once)$50
Student health insurance (if you cannot waive it)$4,723 ($2,083 fall, $2,640 spring)
Books and supplies (BC’s estimate)$1,300 to $2,200

Add the one-time $500 enrolment confirmation fee, flights and personal spending, and a first-year international student should budget well over $100,000. BC marks all fees as proposed and subject to change.

Does Boston College give scholarships to international students?

Only one route is realistic. BC’s international admissions page says need-based financial aid is not available to non-US citizens or non-permanent residents, so international students are expected to cover the full cost. US federal aid is also closed to you.

The exception is merit:

  • Gabelli Presidential Scholars Program: a four-year, full-tuition scholarship for about 18 incoming first-year students. BC’s programme FAQ confirms it is open to all applicants who apply by 1 November, international students included.
  • How to be considered: submit a complete application (ED I, ED II or Regular Decision) by 1 November 2026. There is no separate form and no minimum GPA or SAT.
  • Selection: BC looks for top academic records, leadership and service. Scholars usually come from the top 1 to 2% of the national applicant pool. Finalists receive an offer of admission and are invited to campus, at BC’s expense, for interviews before final selection.
  • Value: full tuition, which is $75,070 at 2026-27 rates. BC also says that if the award does not meet a Scholar’s full need, it adds grant aid, and it funds summer programmes.

BC’s Common Data Set for 2024-25 shows only 20 nonresident undergraduates receiving institutional aid, at an average of $39,634. With so few awards, plan as if you will pay the full price, and treat the Presidential Scholarship as a long shot. Our list of the best American scholarships for international students covers colleges with wider aid.

CSS Profile, ISFAA and financial documents

Because BC gives no need-based aid to international students, you do not file the CSS Profile or the ISFAA for BC. What you do file is the Certification of Finances, and only after you are admitted. BC sends admitted students a link to the form, which lists the costs for the coming year. BC does not issue the I-20 until it has checked that your sponsor can meet those costs, and it asks applicants not to send the form before a decision.

Testing and English requirements

BC is test-optional, and the policy also covers scholarship review. If you send scores, BC superscores the SAT and ACT. Use SAT code 3083 and ACT code 1788. Enrolled students who reported scores must later send official reports.

English proficiency is a separate matter. Non-US citizens must submit one of these:

TestBC’s recommended minimum
TOEFL iBT100
IELTS Academic7.5
Duolingo English Test130

These are recommendations, not cut-offs. BC does not superscore English tests and ignores TOEFL MyBest scores. It does not accept TOEFL ITP Plus, the TOEFL iBT Home Edition, TOEFL Essentials or IELTS Indicator. BC says the requirement can be waived if you meet one of three conditions, which you should confirm with the admissions office if you studied in English. Students at national-curriculum schools in China are encouraged, but not required, to add an InitialView interview.

What goes into a Boston College application

  1. Common Application: choose Early Decision or Regular Decision, then pick one of BC’s four undergraduate schools. You do not need a major, except for engineering and nursing.
  2. Writing supplement: one essay of up to 400 words from four prompts, submitted on the Common App. Human-Centered Engineering applicants answer a fifth prompt.
  3. Transcript: sent by your school, with national exam results or predicted grades where your system uses them.
  4. School Report and counselor recommendation.
  5. Two teacher evaluations: preferably from English, social studies, science, mathematics or a foreign language.
  6. Mid-Year Grade Report: required for Regular Decision and deferred ED applicants.
  7. English test result: TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo.
  8. Application fee: $85. Common App fee waivers are limited to US citizens and permanent residents.

BC’s page gives these dates without years. I have added the years for the 2026-27 cycle, which matches the supplement prompts BC labels 2026-27.

Scholarship deadline

If you want to be considered for the full-tuition Gabelli Presidential Scholarship, your application must be complete by 1 November 2026, even if you are applying Regular Decision. An application sent in December can still win admission but will miss scholarship review.

How to write the Boston College supplemental essay

BC asks for one 400-word essay, chosen from four prompts. Paraphrased, they ask you to describe a meaningful family or community tradition, to discuss your most meaningful conversation partner and the questions you have explored together, to write about a time someone reduced you to a single story, and to propose a fourth value to add to BC’s “Be” statements. All four connect to BC’s Jesuit focus on reflection and the whole person.

Pick the prompt you can answer with one concrete scene. The tradition prompt suits many African and Asian applicants because family and community customs are easy to show in detail, but only if you use it to say something about who you are now. A good structure:

  • Open in a specific moment: a place, a sound, a line someone said.
  • Explain what the moment shows about your values in two or three sentences.
  • Spend the middle on how that value shapes a choice you have made.
  • End by linking it to how you would live in a community like BC’s, without listing BC facts.

A sample opening, for illustration only: “Every December my grandmother counts the plates twice, because in our compound nobody eats until the neighbour’s children have been served. At sixteen I was the one carrying the plates, and I started to notice who was missing…”

Keep AI tools out of the writing itself. BC says all content must be your own and that AI may be used only as a guide.

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal: BC confirms receipt and gives you an applicant portal. Check it for missing documents, especially the counselor report and teacher evaluations.
  2. Scholarship stage: if you applied by 1 November and you are a Presidential finalist, BC contacts you early in the new year with an admission offer and an invitation to campus interviews.
  3. Decision: 15 December 2026 (ED I), 15 February 2027 (ED II) or 1 April 2027 (RD).
  4. Deposit: pay the $500 enrolment confirmation fee. RD students reply by 1 May 2027. ED students withdraw all other applications.
  5. Certification of Finances and I-20: complete the form from BC’s link, BC checks your funds, then issues the I-20.
  6. Visa: pay the SEVIS fee and book your F-1 interview. Bring the same bank evidence you gave BC.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Applying ED without confirming that the family can pay the full cost. There is no need-based aid to fall back on.
  • Missing the 1 November scholarship deadline while applying Regular Decision.
  • Sending a TOEFL Home Edition or IELTS Indicator score, which BC does not accept.
  • Sending financial documents before admission. BC asks you to wait for its link.
  • Using the supplement to list BC facts instead of telling one story about yourself.
  • Forgetting predicted grades or national exam results when your school system uses them.

Costs that BC aid does not cover

Even a Gabelli Presidential Scholar pays more than $20,000 a year at 2026-27 rates, because the award covers tuition only. On top of the $20,188 for fees, housing and meals, you should plan for:

  • Health insurance of $4,723 if your own plan does not meet BC’s waiver rules.
  • One-time orientation ($670) and ID ($50) fees in the first semester.
  • Books, estimated at $1,300 to $2,200.
  • Flights, the SEVIS fee and the visa application fee.
  • Winter clothing; Boston winters are long and cold.
  • Housing during breaks if you cannot travel home.

Majors and strengths

BC has four undergraduate schools. The Carroll School of Management is the best known internationally, with large finance and accounting programmes. Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences covers economics, the sciences, computer science, political science and the humanities, and is where most pre-medical students sit. Connell School of Nursing and Lynch School of Education and Human Development admit students directly, and BC has added Human-Centered Engineering, which has its own essay prompt. Expect a core curriculum with philosophy and theology courses, in line with BC’s Jesuit tradition.

Campus and city

BC’s main campus is in Chestnut Hill, a suburb on the western edge of Boston, at the end of the Green Line B branch. You get a green, self-contained campus with the city a train ride away. Many first-year students live on the Newton campus and take a shuttle. The student body is mostly American; nonresidents were 639 of 9,654 undergraduates in fall 2024, so expect fewer international peers than at Boston University or Northeastern.

Graduate admissions at Boston College

Graduate and professional programmes admit through their own schools, such as the Morrissey Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Carroll School of Management, Connell School of Nursing, Lynch School and Boston College Law School. Each sets its own deadlines and English minimums. For 2026-27, BC Law tuition is $75,280 and the full-time Carroll MBA is $70,390. BC’s student services office runs a separate financial aid page for international graduate students; PhD students are usually funded through the department, while master’s students mostly pay their own way.

Boston College compared with similar colleges

CollegeU.S. News 2027 rankAid for international studentsFirst fall 2027 deadline
Boston CollegeNo. 31 (tied)No need-based aid; about 18 full-tuition Presidential Scholarships1 November 2026 (ED I)
Tufts UniversityNo. 31 (tied)Need-aware, meets 100% of demonstrated need for admitted students; no merit awards2 November 2026 (ED I)

Northeastern UniversityNo. 42 (tied)No need-based aid; automatic merit scholarships1 November 2026 (ED I and EA)

If you need help paying, Tufts is the only one of these four that reads your family’s finances and promises to meet full need, though it is need-aware and harder to get into. BC, BU and Northeastern all expect international families to pay unless a merit award comes through.

Who should apply to Boston College

Apply if your family can pay close to $100,000 a year, you want a residential campus near a big city, and you are drawn to business, nursing, the sciences or a liberal arts education with a strong core. Strong students who need full funding can still apply by 1 November and hope for the Presidential Scholarship, as long as BC is one of several reaches.

Look elsewhere if you need need-based aid. Colleges such as MIT and Amherst are need-blind for international students and meet full need, and Duke and Yale also fund international students generously.

Sources and updates

I checked these figures on Boston College’s own pages on 29 October 2026: the undergraduate admission pages for applying and for international students, the Gabelli Presidential Scholars Program FAQ, the Student Services tuition and fees page for 2026-27, the BC News report on 2026-27 tuition from May 2026, and the Boston College Common Data Set 2024-2025, the latest edition BC has posted. The U.S. News profile page could not be opened, so the 2027 rank comes from published reports of the new edition. Deadline years are added by us because BC’s page lists dates only. We update this guide when BC changes its dates, costs or aid rules.
