Cornell University admission requirements for international students start with choosing one of Cornell’s undergraduate colleges, because each college writes its own essay questions. You then submit the Common App, the Cornell supplement, SAT or ACT scores, an English test unless you are exempt, a school report, a counsellor letter, two teacher letters and an $85 fee or waiver. Cornell is need-aware for international students and says it meets 100% of the demonstrated need of the international undergraduates it admits.
For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision closes on 1 November 2026 and Regular Decision on 2 January 2027, and the international aid application is due on the same day as your admission application. Cornell admitted about 8.4% of first-year applicants in its 2025-26 Common Data Set. The 2026-27 cost of attendance is $99,734 before travel and health insurance. I checked these details on Cornell’s admissions and financial aid pages on 29 October 2026.
Cornell admission requirements for international students: key facts
- Application: Common Application plus the Cornell supplement for your chosen college or school.
- Fee: $85. Waivers are available if you meet a Common App waiver criterion, face financial hardship and plan to apply for aid.
- Tests: SAT or ACT required, self-reported, using your highest section scores.
- English test: required unless English is your native language or has been your main language of instruction for the past four years. IELTS 7.5, Duolingo 130 or TOEFL 100 are the most competitive scores.
- Aid policy: need-aware for international students; 100% of demonstrated need met for those admitted.
- Aid form: CSS Profile, Cornell code 2098. International applicants are generally not eligible for CSS fee waivers.
- Aid deadline: the same day as your application, 1 November 2026 (ED) or 2 January 2027 (RD). Miss it and you cannot get aid at any point as an undergraduate.
- Named international scholarships: Levitan Family Scholarships and, for students from India, Tata Scholarships.
Cornell ranking
Cornell is tied at #14 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition, released on 22 September 2026. It is the largest Ivy League university by undergraduate enrolment, with more than 16,000 undergraduates according to Cornell, so it ranks lower than some smaller Ivies while offering a much wider range of majors.
Cornell acceptance rate and class profile
Cornell’s 2025-26 Common Data Set, covering students who started in fall 2025, reports 72,523 applicants and 6,077 admitted, an acceptance rate of about 8.4%. Early Decision applicants had a much higher rate: 1,889 of 10,057, about 18.8%. Cornell does not publish a separate admit rate for international applicants.
| Measure | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| First-year applicants (fall 2025 entry) | 72,523 | Cornell Common Data Set 2025-26 |
| Admitted | 6,077 (about 8.4%) | Cornell Common Data Set 2025-26 |
| Enrolled | 3,827 | Cornell Common Data Set 2025-26 |
| Early Decision | 10,057 applied, 1,889 admitted (about 18.8%) | Cornell Common Data Set 2025-26 |
| SAT middle 50% (enrolled, score submitters) | 1490 to 1550 | Cornell Common Data Set 2025-26 |
| ACT middle 50% | 33 to 35 | Cornell Common Data Set 2025-26 |
| Class of 2029 countries represented among admits | 115 | Cornell Daily Sun, March 2025 |
The fall 2025 class applied under a test-optional policy, so those score ranges come only from students who chose to submit. Cornell now requires scores again, so expect the range for future classes to look similar or slightly higher.
Cornell tuition for international students in 2026-27
International students pay the endowed-college tuition rate whichever Cornell college they join. The lower New York resident rate at the state contract colleges (Agriculture and Life Sciences, Human Ecology, and Industrial and Labor Relations) applies only to New York residents. Cornell raised tuition by 3.76% for 2026-27.
| Cost item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $73,946 |
| Mandatory fees (student activity fee $424, Cornell Health fee $600) | $1,024 |
| Housing | $13,744 |
| Food | $7,604 |
| Books and course materials | $1,234 |
| Personal expenses | $2,182 |
| Transportation | Varies by home region |
| Total before travel | $99,734 |
The Cornell Student Health Plan is not in this total. It is billed only to students without an approved policy, and its cost is not counted in the aid estimate, so check whether your award will cover it.
Cornell scholarships for international students: how aid works
Cornell’s aid is need-based. For international students, admission is need-aware, so a request for aid is one of the factors in the decision. For the international undergraduates it admits, Cornell says it meets 100% of demonstrated need. Depending on total family income, the package can combine Cornell grants, an annual work-study award and what Cornell calls reasonable loans.
- Levitan Family Scholarships: full scholarships for a small group of international students with significant need who attended secondary school outside the US. Recipients keep a GPA of at least 3.0 and write annual update letters.
- Tata Scholarships: for students who attended secondary school in India and qualify for need-based aid.
- Cornell grants: the main source of aid, set by your CSS Profile.
- Work-study: an annual amount you earn through a campus job.
- Loans: included in some packages, depending on family income.
Cornell says nearly half of its undergraduates receive Cornell grants. It also says families earning up to $125,000 with typical assets receive grant aid covering tuition, and families earning up to $75,000 receive aid covering the full cost of attendance. Those thresholds are described for the whole undergraduate body; for international families the CSS Profile result decides the actual award.
A tax point many students miss: grant aid above tuition and mandatory fees is taxable in the US, and Cornell withholds 14% of that excess for international students unless a tax treaty applies. If you need aid that ignores your request in admission, compare Cornell with need-blind options in our best American scholarships for international students list.

Testing policy for fall 2027
Cornell requires the SAT or ACT for all first-year applicants. You can self-report scores on the Common App or in the Cornell applicant portal. Cornell uses your highest section scores across test dates and takes part in SAT Score Choice. For the ACT it considers your superscore; the Science section is not required.
- SAT code: 2098. ACT code: 2726.
- Enrolling students must send official scores. If they do not match what you reported, Cornell can withdraw the offer.
- Recruited athletes send official scores during the application.
English requirements: TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo
You do not need an English test if English is your native language or has been your main language of instruction for the past four years. Everyone else must show proficiency. Cornell lists the scores below as the most competitive, so treat them as targets.
| Test | Most competitive score |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT taken before January 2026 | 100 |
| TOEFL iBT taken from January 2026 (new 1 to 6 scale) | 5.0 minimum, 5.5 recommended |
| IELTS Academic | 7.5 |
| Duolingo English Test | 130 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency | 191 |
You can self-report your score on the Common App or through Cornell’s English Language Proficiency Form in the portal. Official scores are needed only if you enrol.
Application parts
- Common Application with your personal essay and activities.
- Cornell supplement with the essays for your chosen college. You can send it after the Common App, but Cornell encourages you to meet the deadline.
- Official transcript showing completed and in-progress courses, plus mid-year grades when available.
- School Report from your counsellor or a school official.
- Counsellor recommendation from your counsellor, principal or head teacher.
- Two teacher recommendations.
- SAT or ACT scores.
- English proficiency score, unless exempt.
- Portfolio or design supplement for some architecture, art and design programmes.
- Optional music supplement for exceptional musicians.
Cornell supplemental essays for fall 2027 by college
Cornell has no university-wide supplement essay this year. You answer only the prompt or prompts for the college you choose.
| College or school | What you write | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Arts and Sciences | An intellectual passion, question or idea and the parts of the liberal arts curriculum you would use to explore it | 650 words |
| Agriculture and Life Sciences | Your interest in your major and its roots; what draws you to CALS | Two essays, 350 words each |
| Architecture, Art and Planning | B.Arch, BFA or URS essay on your interest in that field | 650 words |
| Brooks School of Public Policy | Your interest in a policy major (plus a DC Start essay if applying to it) | 650 words (DC Start 350) |
| SC Johnson College of Business | The business student you are and how you fit Dyson or the Nolan School of Hotel Administration | 650 words |
| Duffield College of Engineering | Why engineering; why Cornell Engineering; four short answers | Two of 200 words, four of 100 words |
| Human Ecology | An experience linked to the college’s mission and your major | 550 words |
| Industrial and Labor Relations | The issues you care about and how they align with ILR | 650 words |
How to write the Cornell supplemental essays
- Pick the right college first. Your essay must explain why that particular college suits you. Read the majors list for each college before you choose.
- Name courses, labs and programmes. Arts and Sciences and Engineering readers expect you to know what the college offers. Two or three specific links beat a long list.
- Start from your own experience. A question you asked in class, a family business or a farm problem at home makes a stronger opening than a statement about the college’s reputation.
- For Engineering, use every short answer. Do not repeat the same activity in two answers.
- Keep the Common App essay separate. The personal essay tells readers who you are; the Cornell essay tells them what you will study and why there.
An Agriculture and Life Sciences opening, written for illustration only:
“In 2023 my uncle’s cassava farm in Ogun lost half its harvest to mosaic disease, and nobody in our village could tell him which cuttings were safe to plant again.”
The sentence names a real problem, a place and a gap in knowledge. The essay can then link it to plant science courses and research at CALS.
Fall 2027 application deadlines

Majors and academic strengths
Cornell’s undergraduate colleges cover an unusual range: agriculture and life sciences, architecture and art, arts and sciences, public policy, business and hotel administration, engineering, human ecology, and industrial and labor relations. That makes Cornell one of the few Ivy League universities where you can study hotel management, animal science or labour relations next to physics or English.
Engineering, computer science, the life sciences, economics and hotel administration are among its best-known programmes. Because you apply to one college, moving later to another college takes an internal transfer, so choose carefully.
Campus and city
Cornell’s main campus is in Ithaca, a small city in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, about four to five hours by road from New York City. The campus is large and hilly, with gorges and waterfalls nearby. Winters are long and cold, so budget for proper winter clothing. Cornell also has Cornell Tech in New York City, which is mainly for graduate study.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Submitting the CSS Profile after the application deadline. For international students the dates are the same.
- Choosing a college for its admit rate rather than its majors, then writing a weak essay about it.
- Assuming the New York resident tuition applies to everyone at the contract colleges.
- Skipping the English test without four years of English-medium schooling.
- Forgetting that loans and work-study can be part of the package.
- Not budgeting for the 14% tax withholding on grant aid above tuition and fees.
- Applying Early Decision without checking that the family can meet the expected contribution.
Costs aid doesn’t cover
- SAT, ACT and English test fees.
- The CSS Profile fee, which international applicants usually pay themselves.
- The US visa application fee and SEVIS I-901 fee. Check current amounts on the US State Department and SEVP sites.
- Flights to New York and the bus or shuttle to Ithaca.
- Winter coats, boots and bedding.
- Tax withheld on grant aid above tuition and fees.
- The Cornell Student Health Plan if your award does not include it.
Graduate admissions at Cornell
Graduate research degrees at Cornell are run through the Graduate School, which applies a university-wide English proficiency requirement, while professional schools such as the Johnson business school, the law school and Weill Cornell Medicine admit separately. Each field sets its own deadlines and tests, and PhD funding is usually arranged by the field. Check your programme page before you apply.
Cornell compared with peer universities
| University | Aid policy for international applicants | Testing for fall 2027 | Early round | Regular deadline | Our guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cornell | Need-aware; 100% of need met (grants, work-study, some loans) | SAT or ACT required | Early Decision, 1 Nov 2026 | 2 Jan 2027 | This page |
| Brown | Need-blind for international students | SAT or ACT required | Early Decision, 1 Nov 2026 | 5 Jan 2027 | Brown guide |
| Columbia | Need-aware | Test-optional for 2026-27 | Early Decision, 1 Nov 2026 | 1 Jan 2027 | Columbia guide |
| Johns Hopkins | Need-aware; 100% of need met without loans | SAT or ACT required | Early Decision I, 1 Nov 2026 | 2 Jan 2027 | Johns Hopkins guide |
Brown is the only one of these that ignores international aid requests in admission. If you want a smaller Ivy with no loans in the package, also look at our Yale scholarships guide.
Who should apply to Cornell
Apply if you know which field you want and Cornell has a college built around it, especially in agriculture, engineering, hotel administration, labour relations or the life sciences. Cornell suits students who want a big university with a strong Ivy League name and do not mind a small town and cold winters.
If you need a large aid package, I would still apply, but add need-blind universities such as MIT, Brown and Yale. Cornell’s package can include loans and work-study, so compare offers carefully.
