Darden MBA admission requirements for international students are short on paper: a resume, unofficial transcripts, a GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment score (or an approved waiver), two 200-word short answers, a 90-second video essay, one recommendation, a $250 fee and an interview. If your bachelor’s degree was not taught in English, you also need an English test, although Darden sets no minimum score. The University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business is tied at No. 11 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools ranking, and its Class of 2027 is 30% international.
For entry in August 2027, Early Action and Round 1 have closed, so the deadline most international applicants should now work towards is Round 2 on 7 January 2027, with decisions on 17 March 2027. The first-year cost of attendance for an international student in 2026-27 is $125,420, of which $88,240 is tuition and fees. Every admitted applicant is considered for merit scholarships automatically, and Darden says two private lenders will lend to international students without a U.S. cosigner.

Darden MBA ranking
U.S. News published its 2026 Best Business Schools list (part of the 2026 Best Graduate Schools) in April 2026. Darden tied for No. 11 among full-time MBA programmes, level with Yale School of Management. Stanford returned to No. 1 in the same edition. Rankings move by a few places each year, so I would treat Darden as a firm member of the group just below the M7 and the top ten rather than read much into one position.
For an international applicant the ranking matters most at the recruiting stage. Consulting firms and banks that hire MBAs into U.S. offices visit a fairly fixed list of schools, and Darden is on it, as the employment figures further down show.
Darden MBA class profile and acceptance rate
These are the figures Darden released for the Class of 2027, the class that started in August 2025. Darden publishes averages (means), not medians, for test scores.
| Measure | Class of 2027 |
|---|---|
| Students enrolled | 361 |
| International students | 30%, from 28 countries |
| Average GMAT (10th edition) | 725 |
| Average GMAT Focus | 671 |
| Average GRE | 322 |
| Average undergraduate GPA | 3.54 |
| Average work experience | 5.67 years |
| Average TOEFL (from Darden’s international page) | 106 |
Darden does not publish an acceptance rate on its own admissions pages. Clear Admit lists Darden’s acceptance rate as 39.4% without tying it to a class year, so read it as a rough guide. Admit rates for international applicants are not published at all.
Darden MBA requirements for international students
The checklist is the same for every applicant. International candidates have extra rules on English, transcripts and degree length.
- Undergraduate degree: equivalent to a four-year U.S. bachelor’s. Darden says it also recognises degrees earned in three years, which helps applicants from countries with three-year degrees.
- Transcripts: upload unofficial transcripts as scanned PDFs. Records not in English need complete, literal translations. If you are admitted you send official transcripts, and Darden warns that the offer will be withdrawn if they differ from what you uploaded.
- Test score: GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment. Darden treats the tests the same, accepts the GMAT superscore and asks you to report all valid scores. Verified scores must arrive within one week of the deadline. School codes: GMAC KC7-0X-86, ETS 4629.
- Test waiver: reviewed case by case. An approved waiver removes the need for a verified score.
- Resume: required.
- Short answers: two questions, 200 words each.
- Video essay: one randomly generated question, 90 seconds to answer.
- Recommendation: one required, a second optional. The recommender should have supervised your work, usually within the last few years. Darden says purely academic referees are typically less helpful.
- Application fee: $250, with waivers only in select circumstances, such as some admissions events.
- Interview: required before anyone is admitted.
If you need help briefing your recommender, our guide to recommendation letters with samples covers how to give a referee the right examples, and the same approach works for an MBA reference.
English language requirements
- You must take an English test if your bachelor’s degree was taught in a language other than English.
- You do not need one if your bachelor’s was taught in English. Darden “strongly” encourages a test if your bachelor’s was not in English but your master’s or PhD was.
- Accepted tests: TOEFL, IELTS, PTE and the Duolingo English Test.
- Darden has no minimum score. The average TOEFL in the class is 106.
- TOEFL scores are valid for two years. The TOEFL code is 5820. For IELTS, search “University of Virginia – Darden School of Business”; for Duolingo, search “UVA Darden”.
Many applicants from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and other English-speaking African countries studied in English and can skip the test. Keep a letter or transcript note from your university confirming English-medium instruction in case anyone asks.
Darden MBA deadlines 2026-2027
Every round admits students to the class that starts in August 2027. Darden encourages international applicants to apply in Round 1 or Round 2 so there is time for the visa.
| Round | Application deadline | Decision released |
|---|---|---|
| Early Action (closed) | 9 September 2026 | 28 October 2026 |
| Round 1 (closed) | 7 October 2026 | 9 December 2026 |
| Round 2 | 7 January 2027 | 17 March 2027 |
| Round 3, March | 1 March 2027 | 2 April 2027 |
| Round 3, April | 1 April 2027 | 5 May 2027 |
| Round 3, May | 1 May 2027 | 28 May 2027 |
If you are admitted you pay non-refundable deposits that later count towards tuition. In Round 2 that is $2,000 by 26 April 2027 and another $2,000 by 17 May 2027. Darden notes that scholarship winners may be given an earlier deposit date.
Deadline warning
Round 3 is the last chance for August 2027 entry, but a May admit has only a few months to get an I-20 and a U.S. student visa. If you are applying from outside the United States, aim for Round 2 on 7 January 2027.
Darden MBA essays 2026-2027 and how to answer them
Darden replaced its longer essays with two 200-word short answers and, new this cycle, a video essay. Two hundred words is roughly two short paragraphs, so each answer has room for one clear story or one clear plan.
Short answer 1: Relationships Matter Here
The prompt: what would you want your classmates to know about you that is not on your resume? Darden teaches through daily case discussion, so the committee wants to know what you will add to that room.
- Pick one thing, a belief, a habit, a side project or a part of your background, and show it through one specific moment.
- Link it to how you will behave with classmates, in learning teams, clubs or the section.
- Avoid repeating your job. If the reader could find it on your resume, it does not belong here.
Sample opening, for illustration: “Every Saturday for four years I sold my mother’s pepper sauce at a Lagos market, and it taught me more about pricing than my finance degree did.”
Short answer 2: Careers With Purpose
The prompt asks you to describe your short-term post-MBA goal by industry, function, geography and company size or mission, and how it fits your long-term career vision. It is a goals essay squeezed into 200 words.
- Name the role in plain terms, for example “a consultant in the Washington DC office of a strategy firm, working on public sector clients.”
- Answer every part the prompt lists: industry, function, geography and company size or mission.
- Give one sentence on why now and one on how this first job builds toward the long-term vision.
- If you plan to work in the U.S. after graduating, a goal in an industry that sponsors visas, such as consulting, finance or technology, reads as realistic.
Sample opening, for illustration: “Right after Darden I want to join the healthcare practice of a strategy consulting firm in the United States, advising hospital groups on how to expand outpatient care.”
Video essay
You get one question from a pool written by the Admissions Committee and 90 seconds to answer. You cannot see the question in advance. Practise speaking for 90 seconds on common prompts (a mistake you learned from, a team you led, why an MBA) with your phone camera, check your lighting and sound, and keep notes off screen.
Darden MBA interview
- Required for admission, and invitations are a positive sign whenever they arrive.
- Lasts up to 45 minutes.
- Conducted by an Admissions Committee member or a second-year student. Both carry equal weight.
- Blind: the interviewer has not read your application or resume.
- Held on Grounds in Charlottesville, on Zoom, or occasionally at other locations.
- Early Action applicants could book open interviews from August to the end of September. In Rounds 1 to 3, interviews are by invitation after your file is reviewed.
Because the interviewer has not read your file, you must tell your story from the start: who you are, what you have done, why an MBA, why Darden and what you want to do next. International applicants interviewing over Zoom should test their connection beforehand and keep a phone hotspot ready, since a dropped call wastes your limited time.
What the Darden admissions committee looks for
- Readiness for the case method: you will speak in class almost every day, so they look for people who communicate clearly and listen well. The interview and video essay test this directly.
- Academic ability: your test score and transcript must show you can handle finance, accounting and analytics in a fast first year.
- Professional impact: results you produced at work, ideally with numbers, and evidence that people trusted you with more responsibility.
- Clear and realistic goals: the second short answer asks for detail because recruiting starts weeks after you arrive.
- Community: Charlottesville is a small city and students spend a lot of time together. The first short answer exists to find out what kind of classmate you will be.
Darden MBA tuition and cost of attendance 2026-2027
Darden’s budget for the first year (Class of 2028) charges international students slightly more tuition than other out-of-state students and adds a larger travel allowance.
| Item (2026-27) | International student |
|---|---|
| Tuition and fees | $88,240 |
| Darden MBA case fees | $1,100 |
| UVA student health insurance | $4,220 |
| Computer | $2,000 |
| Housing (9 months) | $13,788 |
| Food (9 months) | $7,140 |
| Personal expenses (9 months) | $4,932 |
| Transportation | $4,000 |
| Total cost of attendance | $125,420 |
For comparison, a Virginia resident’s total is $118,196 and a non-Virginia U.S. student’s is $123,196. Add $7,000 for a spouse and $4,000 for each other dependent on your I-20. A two-year budget is roughly double the first-year figure, but Darden has only published the 2026-27 numbers, so check the second-year figure when it comes out.
Darden MBA scholarships for international students
Darden says international students are considered for all its merit-based scholarships. There is no separate form: the committee decides awards during admission and you hear about any scholarship with your decision letter. Awards range from a modest stipend up to full tuition and fees. In September 2025 Darden announced more than 100 new MBA scholarships.
| Award | What it is | Open to international students? |
|---|---|---|
| Darden merit scholarships | Automatic consideration at admission; stipend up to full tuition and fees | Yes |
| Oculus Fellowships | Competitive Darden scholarship; may need a supplemental process; can cover full tuition and fees | Darden says competitive awards are open to students from all parts of the globe |
| Batten Scholars Program | Competitive Darden scholarship | As above |
| Batten Media Fellowships | Competitive Darden scholarship | As above |
| Lemuel E. Lewis Bicentennial Award | Competitive Darden scholarship | As above |
| Jefferson Scholars Foundation fellowships | Selected and awarded by the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, an external partner | Check with the foundation |
| AccessDarden | Need-based grants that eligible admitted students can apply for each year | Darden does not say; ask the financial aid office |
| Darden Worldwide Scholarship | Covers the programme fee for one global course for every full-time MBA student | Yes |
Darden does not publish dollar amounts for individual awards. Its Early Action round is described as having the highest scholarship volume, and the international page encourages first-round applications for funding. If money decides whether you can attend, apply early in the cycle.
Loans without a U.S. cosigner
Darden says two private lenders lend to international full-time MBA students without a U.S. cosigner. Its page does not name them, and the loans come from the lenders, not from Darden. For the Class of 2029, international loan applications open in early April 2027 through the admitted student portal. You can also look at our list of scholarships for African students for external funding to combine with a Darden award.
Is the Darden MBA STEM designated?
Partly. Darden offers a management science specialisation that is eligible for the STEM OPT extension. A 2022 post on Darden’s career blog explains that students who complete it can add 24 months of STEM OPT to the standard 12 months of OPT, up to 36 months of U.S. work without employer sponsorship, provided the employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Darden has not described the whole MBA as STEM designated, so if you want the extension, plan your electives around the specialisation and confirm the current rules with UVA’s international student office.
Darden MBA salary and employment
Results for the Class of 2025, from Darden’s November 2025 employment release and Poets&Quants’ report on it:
| Measure | Class of 2025 |
|---|---|
| Graduates seeking jobs | 327 |
| Received an offer within 3 months | 90.2% |
| Accepted an offer within 3 months | 89.3% |
| Median base salary | $175,000 |
| Average base salary | $162,578 |
| Median signing bonus | $30,000 |
| Consulting | 37.3% of hires |
| Financial services | 26.0% |
| Technology | 16.1% |
Employers named by Darden include Amazon, Bain, Bank of America, Barclays, Boston Consulting Group, Capital One, Emerson, JPMorgan Chase, McKinsey and Visa. Darden did not publish separate outcomes for international graduates, who usually face a harder search because many employers will not sponsor H-1B visas.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Waiting for Round 3: a late admit leaves little time for the visa interview, and much of the scholarship money is gone by then.
- Uploading transcripts that do not match the official ones: Darden withdraws offers when they differ. Upload the exact document your university will send.
- Using up both short answers on the resume: the first question asks for what is not on your resume.
- A vague goal: “work in finance somewhere” does not answer a prompt that asks for industry, function, geography and company type.
- Forgetting the interview is blind: applicants assume the interviewer knows their background and skip the basics.
- Budgeting only for tuition: tuition is about 70% of the $125,420 cost of attendance.
Costs not covered
- Summer months: the housing, food and personal figures cover nine months only, and financial aid does not cover non-enrolment periods. Your summer internship normally pays for this.
- Deposits: up to $4,000 before you arrive, credited to tuition later.
- Getting here: the $250 application fee, GMAT or GRE fees, English test fees, visa application and SEVIS fees, and flights beyond the $4,000 transport allowance.
- Family: $7,000 for a spouse and $4,000 per extra dependent on top of the published budget.
- Setting up: furniture, a car or bicycle, winter clothing and rent deposits, which the budget does not list separately.
Who should apply to Darden
Darden suits applicants who want a general management education, enjoy speaking in class and are aiming for consulting or finance, where most of the class ends up. With a class of about 360 in a small university city, it also suits people who want a close community. It is a weaker fit if you want to stay in a big city during the MBA, if you want a very large international network, or if you dislike case discussion and prefer lectures. If you need full funding to attend at all, apply anyway, but also apply to schools with large named scholarships for your region.

Sources and updates
I checked these details on Darden’s own pages on 29 October 2026: the application guidelines, the deadlines and deposits page, the interviews and international students pages, the 2026-27 cost of attendance, the scholarships and financial aid pages, Darden’s June 2026 announcement of the 2026-27 essays and deadlines, its November 2025 employment release and a March 2022 Darden career blog post on the STEM OPT specialisation. The ranking is from U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools (April 2026), as reported by Poets&Quants and Clear Admit. Darden’s class profile page did not display its figures, so the Class of 2027 numbers and the 39.4% acceptance rate come from Clear Admit’s summary of Darden’s release, and the average base salary from Poets&Quants. We update this guide when Darden changes its dates, costs or requirements.
