Vassar College admission requirements for international students follow the same Common App process as for US applicants, with three additions: an English test if your last three years of secondary school were not taught in English, a recommended InitialView or Vericant interview, and a financial aid file sent with your application if you want aid. SAT and ACT scores are optional, and you write one 300-word Vassar essay from a choice of two prompts.
Vassar says plainly that it is need aware when it reads applications from international students, and it meets the full demonstrated need of admitted students who applied for aid with their admission application. The most recent class profile Vassar publishes on its admission site, for the Class of 2028, shows an 18.6% acceptance rate with 18.2% of the class international. For fall 2027 entry the Early Decision I deadline is 15 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision both close on 1 January 2027. I checked everything below on Vassar’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Vassar College ranking
Vassar is #12 among National Liberal Arts Colleges in the U.S. News 2027 edition, released in September 2026, according to the published list as reproduced on the College Confidential forum. That makes it the highest-ranked college in this group of five, and the top-ranked civilian liberal arts college in New York State on that list (West Point is ranked above it). In the 2026 edition Vassar was tied #13.
Vassar College acceptance rate and class profile
Vassar’s admission office posts a profile of the Class of 2028, which entered in fall 2024. It is the newest class profile on Vassar’s admission site. Vassar has also released a 2025-26 Common Data Set, but I could not open it, so its figures are not used here.
| Measure (Class of 2028, fall 2024) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Applications | 12,447 |
| Acceptance rate | 18.6% |
| First-years enrolled | 665 |
| International students (including dual citizens) | 18.2% |
| Countries represented (outside the US) | 57 |
| Average SAT (submitters) | 1488 |
| Average ACT (submitters) | 33 |
| Students who applied without test scores | 56% |
That international share is high for a US liberal arts college. Nearly one in five students in that class held a non-US citizenship, and more than half the class applied without SAT or ACT scores. Vassar does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants.
Vassar College tuition for international students (2026-27)
Vassar’s Student Financial Services publishes these yearly charges for 2026-27. Books, personal costs and travel are not listed on that page, so the total below covers billed items only and is my sum.
| Cost item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $76,140 |
| On-campus housing and food | $19,800 |
| Mandatory fees | $1,020 |
| Health insurance (full year) | $3,591 |
| Billed total with health insurance | $100,551 |
| On-campus apartment and food (instead of housing and food) | $20,300 |
Add your own estimate for books, a winter wardrobe, personal spending and two return flights a year. Aid budgets at Vassar are built on the full cost of attendance, so these indirect costs count when Vassar works out your need.
Vassar scholarships for international students: how aid works
- Need-aware admission: Vassar states that it is need aware for international applicants. Applying for aid can affect your decision.
- Full need met: Vassar meets full demonstrated need for admitted students who apply for aid with their admission application.
- First year only: if you are admitted without aid in your first year, Vassar will not fund you in later years.
- No aid for international transfers: international transfer applicants cannot receive Vassar aid, so apply as a first-year if you need money.
- US citizens abroad: US citizens and permanent residents at schools outside the US are admitted without regard to finances.
Vassar’s aid is need-based. Its international pages do not list merit scholarships, so do not count on one.
How to apply for Vassar financial aid as an international student
- CSS Profile: opens on 1 October. Vassar’s CSS code is 2956. If your parents are divorced, separated or never married and live apart, each completes a Profile. Vassar does not give CSS fee waiver codes and does not accept the paper ISFAA.
- IDOC documents: after your Profile is processed, the College Board emails IDOC instructions. Vassar’s international aid instructions list parent tax returns for the latest year filed (translated into English), a statement of earnings from each parent’s employer saying whether pay is gross or net, the International Business/Farm Supplement if your parents own a business or farm, and the Certification of Finances.
- Deadlines: 15 November 2026 for Early Decision I, 1 January 2027 for Early Decision II, and 1 February 2027 for Regular Decision.
- Tracking: check progress in the Vassar applicant portal, not IDOC’s document portal, which Vassar warns may be incomplete.
Vassar admission requirements for international students: the application
| Part | What Vassar asks for |
|---|---|
| Application | Common App or Coalition Application, or QuestBridge for eligible students |
| School documents | A complete, school-certified transcript for every marking period, plus national exam results such as GCSE, IB MYP or CBSE board exams |
| Recommendations | Counselor and teacher recommendations; a translated letter needs the signed original too |
| Vassar essay | One of two prompts, 300 words or fewer |
| Your Space | Optional section for creative work or anything not covered elsewhere |
| SAT or ACT | Optional, with a declaration deadline if you apply without them |
| English proficiency | TOEFL, IELTS Academic or Duolingo unless your last three years were taught in English |
| Interview | InitialView or Vericant recommended for TOEFL and IELTS takers |
| Arts portfolio | Optional, for well-developed talent in music, art or dance |
Every document must be in English. If your transcript is in another language, send a certified original and an English translation, preferably from an agency. If an agency is too costly, Vassar accepts a translation by a school official or English teacher. Final terminal exams such as A Levels, IB or the French bac are required before you enrol. Vassar’s admission pages do not state the application fee; QuestBridge finalists and eligible students can use a Vassar fee waiver.
Testing policy
Vassar is test-optional. If you send scores, you can self-report them, and Vassar superscores, taking your best section scores across dates. You must tell Vassar if you are applying without scores by 22 November 2026 for Early Decision I or 8 January 2027 for Early Decision II and Regular Decision. The last test dates Vassar accepts are November for ED I and December for the January rounds. Admitted students who self-reported must send official scores in the spring, and Vassar can withdraw an offer if they do not match.
English requirements
You need an English test if English was not the language of instruction at your secondary school for the last three years. Vassar accepts:
- TOEFL iBT, TOEFL PBT and TOEFL iBT Home Edition (not TOEFL Essentials)
- IELTS Academic (not IELTS General Training)
- Duolingo English Test
Vassar reviews only your highest score from a single sitting and publishes no minimum score. Official results from the testing agency are strongly preferred; if paying for official TOEFL or IELTS reports is a hardship, your counselor can upload a PDF score report with your registration number and test centre details, and you send the official report if you enrol. Duolingo scores must come straight from Duolingo.
Interviews for international applicants
Vassar does not offer alumni or student interviews to international applicants. It recommends an InitialView or Vericant interview if you take TOEFL or IELTS. If you take Duolingo, Vassar reviews the interview portion of your Duolingo test instead.
Vassar deadlines for fall 2027 entry
| Round | Application deadline | Test-optional declaration | Aid deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Decision I (binding) | 15 November 2026 | 22 November 2026 | 15 November 2026 |
| Early Decision II (binding) | 1 January 2027 | 8 January 2027 | 1 January 2027 |
| Regular Decision | 1 January 2027 | 8 January 2027 | 1 February 2027 |
Vassar’s requirements page does not list decision release dates, so watch your applicant portal. Its pages give dates without years; the years above follow the fall 2027 cycle.
Do not miss the test-optional declaration
If you apply without SAT or ACT scores, Vassar asks you to say so by 22 November 2026 (ED I) or 8 January 2027 (ED II and Regular Decision).
How to write the Vassar supplemental essay
For 2026-27, Vassar asks you to choose one of two prompts and answer in 300 words or fewer, according to the Koppelman Group’s guide to this year’s supplement. One asks about an important part of your identity and how it has shaped your life or your interactions with others, under Vassar’s idea of “engaged pluralism”. The other asks about the community or communities you come from and how they shaped you. Confirm the exact wording in the Common App.
Both prompts ask about identity and community, so the risk is a generic essay about “diversity”. Pick one specific part of who you are, and show it through a scene and a consequence. An international applicant has an advantage here, but only if the essay is about you, not a tour of your country.
There is also the optional “Your Space” section, where you can add poetry, short stories, art, photography or video links. Use it if you have real work to show. Leave it empty rather than filling it with a second essay.
A sample opening, for illustration only:
“At my grandmother’s church in Kumasi, the hymns are in Twi and the sermon is in English, and for years I translated the parts my cousins from London missed.”
From there, the essay can show what being the go-between taught the writer and how they would use it in a Vassar seminar.
What happens after you apply
- Applicant portal: Vassar posts your checklist and your aid document status there.
- Interview: book InitialView or Vericant early if you took TOEFL or IELTS.
- Exam results: send national exam results (such as WAEC, CBSE board or GCSE) with your transcript; final results such as A Levels, IB or the French bac are required before you enrol.
- Decision: Vassar posts decisions in the applicant portal; its requirements page does not give release dates. Early Decision admits withdraw other applications.
- Official scores: if you self-reported SAT or ACT scores, send official reports in the spring after you commit.
- Visa: once you enrol, Vassar issues the I-20 for your F-1 student visa interview, and the Office of International Services helps with arrival.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Applying for aid late: aid must go in with your admission application, and admitted students without aid in year one never get it later.
- Taking the wrong test: TOEFL Essentials and IELTS General Training are not accepted.
- Forgetting the test-optional declaration: it has its own deadline.
- Untranslated documents: everything must be in English, with the certified original and a translation, ideally from an agency.
- Not sending national exam results: Vassar wants results such as GCSE, IB MYP or CBSE board exams with your transcript.
- Applying as an international transfer when you need aid: Vassar gives no aid to international transfers.
Costs that aid does not cover
- The CSS Profile fee, with no Vassar fee waiver codes.
- English test and interview platform fees.
- Visa, SEVIS and passport fees and your first flight.
- Winter clothing; the Hudson Valley gets real winters.
Graduate admissions at Vassar
Vassar is an undergraduate college and does not run graduate degree programmes, so this guide covers bachelor’s admission only. Its outcomes data shows that Vassar graduates are admitted to law school at an 88% rate and to medical school at an 80% rate, which matters if you plan a professional degree later.
Majors and campus life at Vassar
Vassar has 2,514 students, a 7:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class of 19. It offers 50 majors, 65 correlates (Vassar’s word for minors) and three dual-degree programmes. The campus covers about 1,000 acres and is kept as an arboretum. Students in the Class of 2028 spoke 49 languages, and 94% of graduates are employed, in school or on a fellowship or volunteer programme six months after graduating. Vassar is in Poughkeepsie, in New York’s Hudson Valley.

Who should apply to Vassar
Apply if you want a flexible liberal arts curriculum, small classes and a large international community, and you write well about who you are. With 50 majors and an optional arts portfolio, it suits students whose interests cross the arts and sciences.
It is a weaker fit if you need merit money, if you are applying as an international transfer and need aid, or if you want a big-city campus. I would apply to Vassar alongside other full-need colleges; our list of the best American scholarships for international students is a good place to find them.
