Boston University Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Boston University admitted 12.8% of first-year applicants for fall 2025 and gives international students merit scholarships only. Here are the $98,419 cost for 2026-27, the Presidential and Trustee Scholarships, English and test rules, and the 2 November 2026 and 5 January 2027 deadlines.

Boston University admission requirements for international students are the usual Common App package plus a few extra documents: your school records and senior-year grades, a counselor report, one teacher evaluation, an English test score, a copy of your passport and proof that your family can pay. SAT and ACT scores are optional. BU admitted 9,853 of 76,776 first-year applicants for fall 2025, an acceptance rate of about 12.8%, and it sits at No. 34 among National Universities in the U.S. News 2027 edition, its highest ever placement.

The money side is where international applicants need to read carefully. BU’s full cost of attendance for 2026-27 is $98,419, and BU says its need-based grant aid is not available to international students, apart from a few partner organisations. What you can compete for is merit money: the Presidential Scholarship pays half of tuition and the Trustee Scholarship pays full tuition and fees. For fall 2027 entry, Early Decision I closes on 2 November 2026, and Early Decision II and Regular Decision close on 5 January 2027, with 1 December 2026 as the cut-off for scholarship consideration.

Boston University ranking

U.S. News published its 2027 Best Colleges edition on 22 September 2026. BU tied for No. 34 among 422 ranked National Universities, alongside UT Austin, UC Davis, UC Irvine, Illinois, Wisconsin and Florida. That was an eight-place rise from No. 42 in the 2026 edition, and BU’s own news office calls it the university’s best placement so far.

Ranking (U.S. News 2027 edition)BU’s position
National Universities, overallNo. 34 (tied)
Undergraduate biomedical engineeringNo. 13
Study abroad programmesNo. 21
Undergraduate economicsNo. 31

Two other Boston schools placed just above BU: Boston College and Tufts tied at No. 31. Northeastern, across the city, tied at No. 42. If you are building a Boston list, our guides to Tufts and Boston College cover their rules for international applicants.

Boston University acceptance rate and class profile

These numbers come from BU’s Common Data Set 2025-2026, which describes the class that started in fall 2025.

Measure (fall 2025 first-years)Figure
Applications76,776
Admitted9,853
Enrolled3,449
Acceptance rateabout 12.8%
Early Decision applications6,907
Early Decision admits2,165 (about 31%)
Average high school GPA3.86
SAT middle 50% (36% submitted)1420 to 1510
ACT middle 50% (10% submitted)33 to 34

BU does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants. The Early Decision figure looks friendlier, but the ED pool is self-selected and binding, so read it with care. I would only apply ED to BU if it is clearly your first choice and your family has already worked out that it can pay the full cost, because the merit scholarships are competitive and nothing else will close the gap.

Boston University tuition for international students in 2026-27

International students pay the same tuition as everyone else. BU’s published cost of attendance for 2026-27 is below.

Item (2026-27)Cost
Tuition$73,024
Fees$1,570
Housing (varies by room type)$13,170
Food (most dining plans)$7,570
Books and supplies$1,000
Personal expenses$1,455
Local transport$630
Total cost of attendance$98,419

The billed part (tuition, fees, housing and food) comes to $95,334. Over four years, at today’s prices, the total is close to $394,000, and BU’s trustees normally raise tuition each year. For the I-20 you will need to show liquid funds for at least the first year.

Does Boston University give scholarships to international students?

Yes, but only merit scholarships. BU’s financial aid office says it cannot offer need-based university scholarships or grants to international students, except through select partner organisations. The BU Promise, which meets 100% of demonstrated need without loans, covers US citizens and permanent residents only. International students also cannot receive US federal aid.

That leaves these options:

  • Presidential Scholarship: half of tuition per year for students entering from fall 2026, which would be $36,512 at the 2026-27 tuition rate. It is open to international students. You are considered automatically if your complete application arrives by 1 December.
  • Trustee Scholarship: full tuition plus mandatory fees, renewable for four years. About 20 students join the programme each year. You must submit the Common App and all documents by 1 December and write one extra essay of up to 600 words. BU’s Trustee page does not say whether international students qualify, although current Trustee Scholars include students who finished high school in Turkey and Singapore. Ask the admissions office before you count on it.
  • Talent awards: BU says some merit awards go to athletes, performers and artists.
  • Outside funding: BU points international families to scholarships from their own governments and to private loans, which usually need a creditworthy US co-signer.

BU does not pay visa fees, summer or winter housing, or tax on scholarship money for international students, so budget for those even if you win an award. For a wider list of US awards, see our guide to the best American scholarships for international students.

Because there is no need-based aid, you do not file the CSS Profile or the ISFAA for BU as an international applicant. You file the Certification of Finances instead (see below).

Boston University admission requirements for international students: the application parts

BU counts you as international if you are not a US citizen or permanent resident. You apply through the Common Application and send:

  1. Common Application: with the personal essay and the BU questions, including the “Why BU” short essay.
  2. Secondary school records: official transcripts sent by a school official. Records in another language need a notarised English translation plus the original.
  3. Senior-year grades: first marking period grades for ED; first semester grades for RD. IB, A Level and other exam-based students also send predicted results.
  4. Counselor recommendation and School Report.
  5. One teacher evaluation.
  6. English test results: TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic or Duolingo, unless English is your first language.
  7. Certification of Finances: the Confidential Statement for Financing Studies with a bank statement or signed bank letter, dated within 12 months of your start date, in English, showing liquid funds in the sponsor’s name.
  8. Passport copy: a PDF of the photo page.
  9. Optional: SAT or ACT scores, and an InitialView or Vericant interview.

Some programmes have subject rules. The College of Engineering wants one year of calculus, and Questrom School of Business wants calculus or precalculus with AP Statistics. IB students meet both with HL or SL Math Analysis and Approaches or HL Math Applications and Interpretations.

Testing policy

BU is test-optional for all first-year applicants through fall 2028, including scholarship candidates. You choose at submission whether to have SAT or ACT scores considered and cannot change that choice later. Self-reported scores are fine for the application, but you must send official reports before you enrol. BU superscores both tests. Codes: SAT 3087, ACT 1794.

English requirements

TestScore BU calls competitiveNotes
TOEFL iBT90 to 100, with at least 20 per section; 5.0 or higher on score reports from 21 January 2026Code 3087; Home Edition accepted

Duolingo English Test125 to 135Total and subscores reviewed

BU does not accept IELTS Indicator, TOEFL ITP Plus or TOEFL Essentials. Waiver requests must reach BU by the application deadline on the English Proficiency Waiver Request Form, and the decision is at BU’s discretion. An interview does not replace a test score.

Boston University deadlines for fall 2027

BU’s deadlines page lists the dates without years. Applications for fall 2027 fall in late 2026 and early 2027, as below.

Deadline warning

Early Decision I closes on 2 November 2026, and for ED your Certification of Finances must arrive by that same date or BU will not review your file. If you want the Presidential or Trustee Scholarship, everything must be in by 1 December 2026, even if you apply Regular Decision.

How to write the Boston University supplemental essay

BU asks one main supplemental question for 2026-27: what about being a student at BU most excites you, in up to 300 words (this wording is from a consultant’s write-up; check it in your Common App). There is also an optional upload space for extra material such as research or a writing sample.

The question is a “why us” essay, and readers have seen every answer about Boston being a great student city. What works is detail that only fits BU:

  • Name the school or college you are applying to and one or two specific things there: a course, a lab, a minor, the study abroad programmes, or a BU Hub requirement you actually like.
  • Link each detail to something you have already done. One concrete link is worth more than a list of five programmes.
  • Say what you would add to BU, not only what BU would give you.
  • Leave out ranking talk and generic praise of Boston.

Sample opening, for illustration only:

“Our school lab in Kumasi had one working microscope, so I learned to draw what I saw before the next group took it. At BU I want to study biomedical engineering, where I could finally turn those sketches into devices that someone can use…”

If you go for the Trustee Scholarship, the 600-word essay asks about a book, film, podcast or experience that connected you to your personal history, or a time you felt out of your comfort zone or marginalised. Treat it as a second personal statement with a different story from your main Common App essay.

How to show you can pay

Every F-1 or J-1 applicant sends the Confidential Statement for Financing Studies with the application, uploaded through the Common App (My Colleges, Other Information) or the MyBU Applicant Portal. Follow these rules or the document will be sent back:

  1. Dates: statements dated within 12 months of your start date.
  2. Language: in English, or with a translation.
  3. Type of funds: cash in bank accounts. Shares, property and other non-liquid assets do not count.
  4. Names: the account holder must be the sponsor who signs the form.
  5. Amount: enough for one year of study costs.

Keep copies. You will need the same evidence for your visa interview and at the US border.

What happens after you apply

  1. Portal check: BU emails you MyBU Applicant Portal details. Check it weekly for missing items.
  2. Mid-year grades: your counselor sends them; exam-based curricula send predicted results.
  3. Decision: 14 December 2026 for ED I, 8 February 2027 for ED II and by 1 April 2027 for RD. Merit awards come with the admission decision.
  4. Deposit: ED students pay the enrolment deposit in January or late February; RD students reply by 1 May 2027. The housing deposit is $650 and is not refundable.
  5. I-20 and visa: once you enrol, BU issues the I-20 from your financial documents. You then pay the SEVIS fee and book the F-1 interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Applying ED when the family cannot pay about $98,000 a year without a scholarship. ED is binding, and BU has no need-based aid to fall back on.
  • Missing 1 December. A complete RD application sent on 4 January is still on time for admission but too late for merit scholarship review.
  • Uploading bank statements that are too old, in a local language, or held in the name of a relative who did not sign the sponsor form.
  • Sending an IELTS One Skill Retake or a TOEFL Essentials result, which BU does not accept.
  • Assuming an interview can replace an English test score.
  • Forgetting predicted grades for A Level, IB or WAEC-style exam systems.
  • Writing a “Why BU” essay that could be pasted into any Boston application.

Costs that BU scholarships do not cover

Even a Trustee Scholarship leaves housing and food, about $20,740 in 2026-27, unpaid. A Presidential Scholarship leaves roughly $62,000 a year. Then add:

  • Flights to and from Boston each year.
  • Visa fees and the SEVIS fee, which BU does not pay.
  • Summer and winter break housing.
  • US tax on the part of a scholarship that pays for housing or food.
  • Health insurance: Massachusetts requires it, and students without a qualifying plan must buy BU’s student plan, billed with first-semester charges.
  • Winter clothing, laptop and phone.

Graduate admissions at Boston University

Graduate applicants apply directly to the BU school that runs the programme, such as the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the College of Engineering, Questrom School of Business, the School of Public Health or the School of Social Work. Deadlines, fees and English minimums differ by school, so read the requirements on the programme’s own page. PhD students are often funded through fellowships or assistantships, while most master’s students pay their own way. The undergraduate rules above, including the merit-only aid policy, do not apply to graduate study.

Majors and campus life at BU

BU’s campus runs along Commonwealth Avenue beside the Charles River, inside the city of Boston, with the Green Line running down the middle. You are a short train ride from Fenway, Back Bay and Cambridge. Winters are cold and snowy.

The U.S. News subject ranks point to the strongest undergraduate areas: biomedical engineering, economics, business and finance through Questrom, psychology and brain sciences, and study abroad. BU also has well-known schools of communication, public health, music and theatre. All undergraduates take BU Hub general education courses, so you will study outside your major as well.

Boston University compared with similar colleges

Brandeis UniversityNo. 59 (tied)Wien International Scholarship meets full need for selected students3 November 2026 (CSS Profile for early rounds)

The real difference is the money. Lehigh and Rochester both read your need-based aid request, even if they are need-aware, while BU does not offer need-based grants to international students at all. For a family that needs help, Lehigh, Rochester or Brandeis may be the better bet. Rochester is also far easier to get into, at about 42% in fall 2025 against BU’s 12.8%.

Who should apply to Boston University

Apply if you want a big research university inside a major city, your family can pay most of the $98,419 yearly cost, and your grades put you in the running for a Presidential Scholarship. BU also suits students who want biomedical engineering, business or communication at a school with large international numbers.

Think twice if you need large need-based aid. BU will not provide it, and a merit award is never guaranteed. In that case, put your effort into need-blind colleges such as Amherst or MIT, and keep BU only as a choice you could pay for.

Sources and updates

I checked every figure here on Boston University’s own pages on 29 October 2026: the undergraduate admissions pages for international applicants, deadlines, the Presidential and Trustee Scholarships and the 2026-27 cost of attendance; the Financial Assistance page on aid for international students; the Provost’s Trustee Scholars page; the Common Data Set 2025-2026; and BU Today’s report of 22 September 2026 on the U.S. News rankings. The U.S. News profile page could not be opened, so the overall rank comes from BU’s own report and the Boston Globe’s coverage of the 2027 edition, and peer ranks from Poets and Quants. The supplemental essay wording comes from a consultant’s summary of the 2026-27 Common App and should be checked in the application itself. We update this guide when BU changes its dates, costs or scholarship rules.
