UMass Amherst admission requirements for international students follow a short checklist: the Common Application with the UMass questions, an $85 fee that cannot be waived, transcripts for grades 9 to 11 or your secondary school exam results, one recommendation letter, and proof of English such as IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 or Duolingo 115. The SAT and ACT are optional. Qualified international first-years are considered automatically for academic merit awards of up to $16,000 a year, with no separate application.
UMass Amherst admitted about 60% of first-year applicants for fall 2025 and 65% for fall 2026. For fall 2027 entry, the Early Action deadline is 5 November 2026 and Regular Decision closes on 15 January 2027. The estimated 2026-27 cost for an international undergraduate is $69,465, including the mandatory health plan. All of this was checked on UMass Amherst’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

| National Universities | No. 59 |
| Top Public Schools | No. 24 (tie), up from No. 29 |
| Artificial intelligence (public schools) | No. 11 |

| Best value for in-state students (public schools) | No. 31 |
UMass Amherst acceptance rate and class profile
The 2025-26 Common Data Set covers the first-years who started in fall 2025, and the admissions statistics page covers fall 2026.
| Measure | Fall 2025 (2025-26 CDS) | Fall 2026 (UMass admissions statistics) |
|---|---|---|
| First-year applicants | 53,117 | About 52,500 |
| Admitted | 31,813 | About 65% of applicants |
| Acceptance rate | 59.9% | 65% |
| International applicants | 6,714 | Not shown |
| International admits | 3,634 (54.1%) | Not shown |
| International first-years enrolled | 447 | 376 |
| First-years enrolled | 5,315 | About 5,200 |
| SAT middle 50% (24.9% submitted) | 1330 to 1480 | Not shown |
| ACT middle 50% | 30 to 34 | Not shown |
The Class of 2029 (fall 2025) had an average high school GPA of 4.06, and score submitters averaged SAT 1394 and ACT 31.1. About 62% of all applicants used Early Action. The text of the Common Data Set residency table is partly garbled in the copy we could read, so treat the international split as approximate. Even so, the pattern is clear: international applicants are admitted at a lower rate than the overall pool, so strong grades matter.
The Commonwealth Honors College took about 640 first-years in fall 2025, with an average GPA of 4.42 and average SAT of 1432.
UMass Amherst tuition for international students in 2026-27
International students pay the out-of-state tuition rate, plus a mandatory health plan and higher allowances for housing and food over breaks. These are UMass’s 2026-27 estimates, which still need final approval from the Board of Trustees. UMass says this itemised estimate matches the educational expenses on the I-20.
| Cost item (2026-27) | International student |
|---|---|
| Tuition and fees | $43,819 |
| Housing (including breaks) | $10,188 |
| Meals | $9,838 |
| Student Health Benefit Plan (mandatory) | $2,470 |
| Books | $1,200 |
| Miscellaneous | $1,000 |
| Travel | $950 |
| Total cost of attendance | $69,465 |
For comparison, the out-of-state U.S. total is $63,983 and the Massachusetts resident total is $39,896. Tuition and some fees vary by college and major, and the health plan figure is finalised the summer before the year begins.
UMass Amherst scholarships for international students
International students cannot receive U.S. federal aid, and UMass says most of its aid needs a FAFSA. What international first-years can get is merit money awarded by the Admissions Office.
- Amount: academic awards of up to $16,000 a year for qualified international first-year undergraduates.
- Application: none; you are considered automatically when you apply for admission, and the award appears in your admission letter.
- Early Action: EA applicants receive full consideration for merit scholarships, and any award comes with the EA admission packet.
- Renewal: UMass admissions awards renew for up to four years (eight semesters) if you stay full time and make satisfactory academic progress.
- Transfers: international transfer students are not eligible for these awards.
- Other sources: some schools, majors and campus offices offer their own scholarships after you enrol.
For context, the Chancellor’s Award for U.S. applicants from outside Massachusetts is $10,000 to $18,000 a year. UMass’s international pages give their own ceiling of $16,000, so use that figure when you plan.
UMass Amherst admission requirements for international students
- Common Application: complete it including the UMass questions.
- Fee: $85, which UMass does not waive for international students.
- Transcripts: official records for grades 9 to 11, or your secondary school exam results, plus any college coursework.
- One recommendation letter.
- English proficiency: required of all non-native English speakers unless UMass grants a waiver.
- SAT or ACT: optional for first-year applicants.
- Portfolio or audition: architecture, art, dance and music applicants should contact the department early; your application must be on file first.
You need no visa or immigration documents to apply. After admission you must show funds for your first calendar year, excluding travel, and explain how you will pay for later years.
Testing policy
SAT and ACT scores are optional for first-year applicants. Only about a quarter of fall 2025 enrollees sent an SAT score, and those who did scored very high (middle 50% of 1330 to 1480), so send a score only if it is in or above that range.
English requirements
| Test | Minimum (first-year applicants) |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (taken before 21 January 2026) | 80, no section below 20 |
| TOEFL iBT (taken after 21 January 2026) | 4.5, no section below 4 |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5, no subscore below 6.0 |
| Duolingo English Test | 115 |
| Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency | 176, no subscore below 169 |
UMass does not accept IELTS Indicator, TOEFL ITP Plus for China, TOEFL Essentials or PTE Academic Online, and it does not superscore, including TOEFL MyBest. Scores must be under two years old when you apply. Four years at an English-medium secondary school following a British or American curriculum can earn a waiver, but UMass decides case by case. You may also send an unscripted third-party interview as extra evidence, though it is optional.

Early Action gives full merit scholarship and Honors College consideration and an answer by the end of January. You have a few extra days compared with schools whose early deadline is 1 November.
How to write the UMass Amherst essays, with a sample opening
Your Common App personal statement (250 to 650 words) is the main essay. UMass’s application guide also lists three short UMass questions of about 100 words each: why you chose your major, why you want to attend UMass Amherst, and one community you belong to and how you would add to campus because of it. The guide does not say whether these are required, so answer them anyway; leaving them blank wastes a chance to make your case.
At 100 words, each answer needs one specific fact. For “why UMass”, name something you can only get there, such as a particular major, the Commonwealth Honors College or the Five College exchange with nearby colleges. For the community question, community can mean your town, religion, language, income background or beliefs, so pick the one that has shaped you most.
A sample opening for illustration only, for the community question: “In my neighbourhood in Kumasi, the evening football match on the dusty pitch was where disputes were settled and new boys learned the rules.” Then say in two sentences what that taught you and how you would bring it to a residence hall or club.
What happens after you apply
- Applicant portal: track documents and see your decision online.
- Decision: EA results by the end of January 2027; RD results in March 2027. EA waitlisted students are reviewed again with mid-year grades.
- Merit award: appears in your admission letter if you qualify.
- Confirm your place: pay the non-refundable enrolment fee by 1 May 2027.
- Visa sponsorship email: UMass’s International Programs Office emails you with the subject “Visa Sponsorship”. Do not request your I-20 until you get it.
- Visa: with your I-20 you pay the SEVIS fee and book an F-1 interview.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Missing the UMass questions: the Common App must include the UMass questions to be complete.
- Asking for a fee waiver: UMass says a waiver request suggests you cannot fund your studies.
- Using an unaccepted English test: IELTS Indicator, TOEFL Essentials and PTE Academic Online do not count.
- Sending a low SAT: submitters’ scores are very high, and an average score can hurt more than help.
- Requesting an I-20 too early: wait for the Visa Sponsorship email.
- Applying as a transfer for scholarships: international transfer students are not eligible for merit awards.
Costs that scholarships do not cover
The top international award of $16,000 still leaves about $53,000 of the $69,465 budget. Housing and meals together are $20,026, the health plan is $2,470, and UMass’s $950 travel line may not cover a long-haul flight. Add the SEVIS and visa fees, winter clothing and summer months. Costs usually rise each year, while a merit award stays the same.
Majors and strengths
UMass Amherst has 10 academic colleges and 111 bachelor’s degree programmes, a 16 to 1 student-faculty ratio and 1,500 full-time faculty. Its 2027 U.S. News programme ranks are strongest in computing (No. 11 public for AI, No. 12 for computer science), and the Isenberg School of Management is ranked No. 36 among public business programmes. Biology was the most popular declared major in the Class of 2029. Its four-year graduation rate is 75%, and 92% of first-years return for a second year.
Campus and city
The campus is in Amherst, a college town in western Massachusetts. UMass is part of the Five College Consortium with Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke and Hampshire colleges, so you can take some classes at those schools. Undergraduate enrolment was about 22,700 in fall 2026, 28% of them from outside Massachusetts. Winters are cold and snowy.
UMass Amherst graduate admissions for international students
Graduate applicants apply to a specific programme, and programmes can set higher English scores. The Graduate School’s minimums are TOEFL iBT 80 (or 4 on the new scale), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 115 and PTE 53. Admitted graduate students must show funding for a full 12-month year before the I-20 is issued. UMass says several funding opportunities are open to international graduate students, mostly through departments.

Who should apply to UMass Amherst
UMass suits you if you have top grades (the Class of 2029 averaged a 4.06 high school GPA), want computer science, AI, engineering, biology or business at a large research university, and can fund most of a $69,465 budget. Apply Early Action by 5 November 2026 if your file is ready.
If you need full funding, UMass alone is not enough, because its international awards are partial. Pair it with need-based options from our list of the best American scholarships for international students.
