University at Buffalo admission requirements for international students are simple to meet on paper: one application through the Common App, the SUNY App or Coalition on Scoir, a $50 fee, your secondary school transcripts, a personal essay, one recommendation letter and an English score such as IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 70 or Duolingo 105. The SAT and ACT are optional. Every admitted international first-year is considered automatically for the Flagship Scholarship, which UB’s international brochure puts at up to $15,000 a year.
UB admitted about 81% of all first-year applicants and 94% of international applicants for fall 2025. For fall 2027 entry the Early Action deadline is 1 November 2026 and the Regular Decision completion deadline is 1 February 2027, with later applications taken until classes fill. The estimated 2026-27 cost for an international undergraduate is $61,030, health insurance included. All of this was checked on UB’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

University at Buffalo acceptance rate and class profile
UB’s 2025-26 Common Data Set covers the first-years who started in fall 2025. It breaks down applicants by residency, so you can see how international applicants fared.
| Applicant group (fall 2025) | Applied | Admitted | Enrolled | Acceptance rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All first-years | 45,637 | 36,780 | 5,155 | 80.6% |
| New York residents | 36,127 | 28,935 | 4,533 | 80.1% |
| Out-of-state U.S. | 4,739 | 3,340 | 189 | 70.5% |
| International | 4,771 | 4,505 | 433 | 94.4% |
Only 26.7% of enrolled first-years sent SAT scores. Among them, the middle 50% scored 610 to 690 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and 610 to 700 in Maths; ACT submitters scored 27 to 31. UB’s international pages say most admitted applicants who sent scores had an SAT of 1170 or higher or an ACT of 25 or higher. UB had 21,192 undergraduates in fall 2025, of whom 2,359 were international (nonresident) students.
University at Buffalo tuition for international students in 2026-27
UB’s international admissions office publishes this estimate for undergraduates on F-1 or J-1 visas for 2026-27.
| Cost item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $29,070 |
| Fees (including the international student fee and SUNY health insurance) | $6,466 |
| On-campus housing and dining (double room, Flex 19 meal plan) | $18,606 |
| Related expenses (books, supplies, transport, personal costs) | $6,888 |
| Total | $61,030 |
For comparison, the 2025-26 total in UB’s international brochure was $60,552. Health insurance is already inside the fees line, which makes UB’s total more complete than some budgets that leave insurance out. Flights from your home country are not listed separately.
University at Buffalo scholarships for international students
International students cannot receive U.S. federal or New York State aid. UB offers two merit scholarships that first-year international students can receive.
| Scholarship | Amount | How you get it | Renewal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flagship Scholarship | Varying amounts; UB’s international brochure says first-year awards go up to $15,000 a year | Automatic for admitted international first-years with no completed college credits; no separate application | Up to four years with good academic standing; can be combined with other UB awards |
| Presidential Scholarship | Four-year award; UB does not publish the amount | Separate application through the University Honors College | Four years if you keep the Honors College standards |
The Flagship Scholarship uses a holistic review of your whole file, not only GPA and test scores, and you must start in the fall or spring semester as a first-time student. The Honors College priority date is 15 December 2026, so apply for admission and the Honors College well before then if you want the Presidential Scholarship.
University at Buffalo admission requirements for international students
- Application: choose one of the SUNY Application (select “Buffalo, University at”), the Common App (“SUNY University at Buffalo”) or Coalition for College on Scoir. The fee is $50 and is not refunded.
- Transcripts: official secondary school records with an English translation for anything not in English.
- Personal essay: part of UB’s holistic review.
- One recommendation: from a school counsellor, teacher, community member or employer.
- English proficiency: a test score unless you are exempt (see below).
- SAT or ACT (optional): SAT code 2925, ACT code 2978, sent by the testing agency.
- Applicant Status Page: after you apply, UB emails you a link where you track missing items.
UB says it looks for students who do well in class, take part in activities outside class and keep a healthy balance between the two. It gives credit for AP, IB and A-level results.
Testing policy
UB is test optional for admission and for scholarships, and it says students who leave out scores are not at a disadvantage. Send a score only if it strengthens your file.
English requirements
| Test | Minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (including MyBest) | 70, or 4 on the scale used from 21 January 2026 |
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 |
| Duolingo English Test | 105 |
| PTE Academic or PTE Academic Online | 50 |
| SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing | 500 |
| ACT English and Reading | 18 |
| IB English A (HL or SL) | 5 |
| IGCSE or O-level English First Language | C |
| AS or A-level English | C |
Scores must be less than two years old at admission. You may send self-reported scores for the first review, then official ones. You are exempt from the test if you are a native English speaker, educated entirely in English, and a citizen of Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, Guam, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore or the United Kingdom. Applicants from Ghana, South Africa or India, for example, are not on that list and need a score or one of the exam results above.
University at Buffalo deadlines for fall 2027
| Step | Date |
|---|---|
| Applications open | 1 August 2026 |
| Early Action (non-binding) | 1 November 2026 |
| Honors College priority consideration | 15 December 2026 |
| Housing application opens | 21 January 2027 |
| Regular Decision completion deadline | 1 February 2027 (rolling afterwards until capacity) |
| Enrolment deposit | 1 May 2027, or 10 days after admission if later |
| Housing deposit | 7 May 2027 |
UB’s Common Data Set says Early Action decisions go out on an ongoing basis, so a complete file in early November can bring a decision before the end of the year.
Early Action closes 1 November 2026
Early Action is non-binding and gives you the fastest decision. If your file will not be complete by then, aim for 15 December so you still meet the Honors College priority date.
How to write the UB essays, with a sample opening
UB asks for one personal essay. If you use the Common App, this is your main personal statement, so it serves every college on your list. Choose one experience, describe what you did, and show what changed in how you think or act. UB’s readers want to see academic drive alongside a life outside class, so an essay that shows both works well.
The Honors College application is separate and is where a sharper academic voice helps. Name the subject that holds your attention and what you would do with honors seminars or research.
A sample opening for illustration only: “Our chemistry lab had one working Bunsen burner, so I learned to plan every experiment around a twelve-minute turn.” From there, explain how that limitation shaped the way you study and what you want from a lab-heavy major.
What happens after you apply
- Status page: UB emails a unique link within days; use it to track documents.
- Decision: Early Action files hear on a rolling basis; Regular Decision files after 1 February are reviewed while space remains.
- Scholarship: the Flagship Scholarship is decided at admission and shown in your offer.
- Deposit and housing: pay the enrolment deposit by 1 May 2027 and the housing deposit by 7 May 2027.
- Immigration steps: send proof of funding for your I-20, then pay the SEVIS fee and book your F-1 visa interview.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Submitting more than one application: UB asks for only one of SUNY, Common App or Coalition.
- Assuming you are exempt from English tests: the exemption needs citizenship of a listed country, native English and education entirely in English.
- Missing the Honors date: the Presidential Scholarship requires a separate Honors College application.
- Sending documents without translations: anything not in English needs an English translation.
- Waiting for February: applying after Early Action is allowed, but places in popular majors and housing fill.
Costs that scholarships do not cover
A $15,000 Flagship Scholarship, if you receive the top amount, still leaves about $46,000 of the $61,030 budget. Housing and dining alone are $18,606. Add flights, the SEVIS and visa fees, a winter coat and boots for Buffalo winters, and summer months if you stay for research or a job. Keep at least one full year of costs documented, because your I-20 depends on it.
Majors and strengths
UB has a full range of schools: arts and sciences, engineering and applied sciences (computer science, computer engineering, electrical, mechanical, civil, biomedical and aerospace engineering), management, nursing, pharmacy (including a six-year PharmD), public health, architecture and planning, and the Jacobs School of Medicine, which runs undergraduate programmes such as biomedical sciences and neuroscience. Newer options include AI and Policy Analysis and AI and Quantitative Economics. UB gives transfer credit for AP, IB and A-level results.
Campus and city
UB has campuses in Buffalo and the suburb of Amherst in western New York. It is about 20 minutes by car from Niagara Falls, 90 minutes from Toronto and about an hour by plane from New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington. Winters are cold and snowy. On-campus housing for first-years is booked through the housing application that opens on 21 January.

Graduate applicants apply to a specific programme, and each department sets its own deadline, test requirements and funding. Who should apply to UB
UB suits you if you want a large research university with strong engineering, health and pharmacy programmes, have solid grades, and can cover most of a $61,030 budget. With 94% of international applicants admitted for fall 2025, it is a dependable choice for a balanced list, and its English exemption for Nigerian and Kenyan citizens educated in English saves some African applicants a test fee.
If your family needs the full cost covered, UB alone will not do it, because its aid for international students is merit-based and partial. Add full-need colleges from our list of best American scholarships for international students.
