FUTIA Computer Engineering Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Requirements

FUTIA’s minimum UTME score for Computer Engineering is 160. The course is new from 2026/2027 after NUC approval. See subjects, O’level, screening, fees and a safe target score for 2027/2028.

The FUTIA Computer Engineering cut-off mark is 160 in the UTME. The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) declared 160 as its minimum at JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting on 11 May 2026, and its 2026/2027 supplementary admission notice, signed by the Registrar, Mrs. Offiongita E. Nkang, repeats 160 for candidates who chose FUTIA first. FUTIA has not published a separate departmental cut-off for Computer Engineering, so 160 is the only official figure.

2027/2028 update: FUTIA cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Computer Engineering is new at FUTIA. It is one of the 12 programmes the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved for FUTIA in a letter dated 11 September 2026, with the first intake in 2026/2027. It sits between Electrical/Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, covering the hardware side of computing.

Below you will find the official figures, a safe target score (my advice, clearly labelled), the UTME and O’level requirements, what FUTIA’s screening involves, a worked example, the CAPS and portal steps, and what you study in Computer Engineering at FUTIA.

Because Computer Engineering only opened in 2026/2027, there is no earlier figure to compare. FUTIA applied its general 160 minimum to the new programmes, and nothing in the NUC approval statement or the supplementary notice set a higher bar. Older reprints of JAMB’s FUTIA course list predate the approval, so when you register for the 2027 UTME, check that Computer Engineering appears under FUTIA on the JAMB e-brochure or registration portal.

Safe target score for Computer Engineering at FUTIA (my advice)

This is my judgement as an admissions adviser, not a FUTIA rule. FUTIA admits from the pool of candidates who clear 160 and does not publish the score of the last person admitted to each course.

Your UTME scoreMy read for Computer Engineering at FUTIA
Below 160Not eligible for FUTIA this cycle
160 to 169Eligible, but a place depends on how many applied (better odds in a supplementary round)
170 to 184A reasonable chance with good O’level grades
185 and aboveStrong. This is the range I would aim for.

Computer Engineering pulls candidates who missed Computer Science, so demand can rise quickly once people know it exists. In its first year it was on FUTIA’s 29 October 2026 supplementary list, which suggests places were still open. For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 185 and make sure every O’level subject the course needs is a credit.

Catchment and quotas

FUTIA is a federal university, and federal universities generally admit under merit, catchment and educationally less developed states (ELDS) quotas. FUTIA has not published its own split or a catchment list, so plan on merit: your UTME score and O’level grades.

UTME subject combination and O’level for Computer Engineering at FUTIA

RequirementComputer Engineering at FUTIA
UTME subjectsUse of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. JAMB’s usual combination; confirm on the JAMB e-brochure.
O’levelFive credits: English Language, Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (general brochure line; several universities accept another science in place of Further Mathematics)
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO or NABTEB (FUTIA charges ₦3,000 to verify O’level results)
SittingsBlog reprints of FUTIA’s requirements say not more than two; FUTIA’s own notice was not available to confirm
Direct EntryThree A level passes in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics (JAMB general line; FUTIA has not published its own DE rules)
AgeA 2024 blog reprint says candidates should be at least 16 in the year of admission

The UTME line is the standard engineering one: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The O’level line is where people get caught. JAMB’s general brochure entry lists Further Mathematics among the five credits, though several universities (FUTMINNA and Bells, for example) accept any other science instead. FUTIA has not published its rule, so if you do not have Further Mathematics, confirm with FUTIA before you rely on this course.

FUTIA has not published course-by-course subject requirements on any page I could read, so the lines above are JAMB’s general ones from Myschool’s brochure reprint, checked on 3 November 2026. The brochure pages carried no FUTIA-specific remark, so FUTIA is expected to follow the general line.

How FUTIA screening works

FUTIA’s screening runs through its portal, portal.futia.edu.ng. FUTIA has not published an aggregate formula or confirmed whether its screening includes a written test, and I found no official statement either way.

Worked example for a Computer Engineering candidate

FUTIA has not published how it ranks candidates, so this example is illustrative. Many Nigerian universities convert the UTME score to 50 marks (score divided by 8) and add 50 marks from screening. I use that method only to show how the numbers work.

  1. Nkoyo’s UTME: 183 minus 160 = 23. Nkoyo clears the FUTIA minimum by 23 marks, and falls 2 short of my safe target of 185.
  2. Nkoyo’s illustrative aggregate: 183 divided by 8 = 22.88, plus half of a 60% screening score (30) = 52.88 out of 100.
  3. Effiong’s UTME: 167 minus 160 = 7. Effiong is eligible, but only just.
  4. Effiong’s illustrative aggregate: 167 divided by 8 = 20.88, plus half of a 55% screening score (27.5) = 48.38 out of 100, about 4.5 points behind Nkoyo.
  5. What I would advise: Nkoyo should keep Computer Engineering as the course choice. Effiong should watch CAPS for a Transfer Approval to a related FUTIA course and accept it if FUTIA matters more than Computer Engineering.

Even on this made-up formula, the 16-mark UTME gap between the two candidates becomes about 2 aggregate points before screening starts, which is hard to close on screening alone.

How to apply for Computer Engineering at FUTIA, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME: choose Computer Engineering with Use of English plus Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and make FUTIA your first choice. If you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution before FUTIA’s screening opens.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: FUTIA issued a notice to Post-UTME candidates about uploading O’level results. Do it at an accredited JAMB centre as soon as your result is out.
  4. Register on the FUTIA portal: create and verify an account on portal.futia.edu.ng, pay the ₦2,000 screening fee and complete the screening form.
  5. Check and accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, go to Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept the offer if it is the course you want. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  6. Pay acceptance and verification: on the FUTIA portal, pay the ₦30,000 acceptance fee and the ₦3,000 O’level verification fee.
  7. Complete registration: fill your biodata, register your courses and collect your matriculation number on the portal.
  8. Pay school fees in full: FUTIA’s 2026/2027 fee schedule (Myschool, 23 September 2026) requires 100% payment at registration and scrapped the old 70/30 instalment plan. Engineering and non-engineering programmes have separate charges.

Warning

Every genuine FUTIA admission shows on JAMB CAPS, and FUTIA’s fees are paid through portal.futia.edu.ng. Do not pay anyone who promises a Computer Engineering place or a list slot.

For the 2026/2027 cycle, JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the deadline for public universities, and that date has now passed. FUTIA released its supplementary form two days before it, on 29 October 2026. If you are planning for 2027/2028, start from the 2027 UTME: read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and how to check your JAMB result.

Studying Computer Engineering at FUTIA

FUTIA was established by the Federal Government in June 2021 as one of two new federal universities of technology (the other is in Jigawa State). Its Vice-Chancellor is Prof. Leo Daniel. The university lists six focus areas: Aviation and Space Technology, Oil and Gas, Maritime and Ship Building, Computing Technology, Biotechnology and Informatics, and Agricultural Technology. Its academic units are called Schools, not Faculties. Computer Engineering is in the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology.

Accreditation

Computer Engineering is one of 12 new programmes FUTIA announced on 14 October 2026. The NUC letter, dated 11 September 2026, followed a resource verification visit and gives approval to commence. That lets FUTIA admit students; it is not accreditation, which NUC normally carries out as the first set approaches graduation. Professional council approval for the programme is not confirmed.

What you study

  • Circuit theory, electronics and digital logic design
  • Computer architecture and microprocessors
  • Embedded systems and microcontroller programming
  • Computer networks and data communication

For UTME revision, start with our JAMB Chemistry syllabus.

Mistakes that cost Computer Engineering applicants a FUTIA place

  • Treating 160 as an admission score: it is the minimum to apply, and the score that gets you in is usually higher.
  • The wrong UTME subjects: Computer Engineering needs Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. A wrong combination cannot be fixed after the exam.
  • FUTIA not as first choice: the 2026/2027 notices limited screening to candidates who chose FUTIA first.
  • O’level not on CAPS: FUTIA cannot offer you admission until your result is uploaded.
  • Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: the acceptance fee, verification fee and full school fees are separate steps on the FUTIA portal.
