The Abia Poly Statistics cut off mark is 100 in the UTME, the national minimum JAMB set for polytechnics for 2026/2027. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba (Abia State Polytechnic on JAMB’s portal) has not published a departmental cut-off for ND Statistics, and the “120 and above” figure on blogs is unofficial.
2027/2028 update: Abia Poly cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Statistics is one of the courses named in the polytechnic’s 2025/2026 ND/HND advert, it is on JAMB’s list for the school, and HND Statistics appears in a reprint of the HND list. It is usually less crowded than Computer Science, which makes it a smart choice for a candidate with good Mathematics and a middling UTME score. Here are the verified figures, my safe target score, the subject combination, screening, a worked example and the CAPS steps.
Abia Poly Statistics cut off mark at a glance
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Status |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB minimum UTME score for polytechnics | 100 | Official (JAMB 2026 policy meeting, reported by NAN on 11 May 2026) |
| Abia Poly departmental cut-off for Statistics | Not published | No official figure found for 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 |
| “120 and above” figure seen on blogs | 120 | Unofficial (o3schools, 3 February 2026; no school notice cited) |
| Programme level | National Diploma (ND), full time | ND entry is through the UTME and JAMB CAPS |
| School | School of Science and Industrial Technology | Wikipedia, citing the JAMB brochure |
| UTME subjects | English and Mathematics plus two related subjects (Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography or similar) | Myschool’s brochure page for ND Statistics did not load; confirm on JAMB’s e-brochure |
| Screening fee and dates | Not published officially | Check the polytechnic portal |
| Admission deadline set by JAMB | 31 December 2026 for polytechnics | Official (NAN, 11 May 2026) |
Abia Poly Statistics cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics and monotechnics | Official |
| 2026/2027 | 120 | “Scored up to 120 and above” on a blog’s Abia Poly screening post | Unofficial |
| 2025/2026 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics | Official (reported by Nairametrics, 8 July 2025) |
| Any year | None | Abia Poly cut-off for Statistics specifically | Never published in any source I found |
So the figure that has held for two sessions running is JAMB’s 100. Abia Poly has never published a Statistics number of its own, and it has not released merit lists with scores, so nobody outside the admissions office knows the lowest score that actually got in.
Safe target score for Statistics at Abia Poly (my advice)
My judgement as an admissions adviser, not an Abia Poly rule.
| Your UTME score | My read for ND Statistics at Abia Poly |
|---|---|
| Below 100 | Not eligible for any ND course this session |
| 100 to 119 | Eligible, but borderline |
| 120 to 139 | Fair chance |
| 140 to 159 | Good chance |
| 160 and above | Very strong for Statistics. |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for 130 or more. Statistics rarely draws the crowds that Computer Science and Accountancy do, and polytechnics often fill it with candidates who were moved from those courses on CAPS. A score of 130 to 140 with a strong Mathematics credit should place you well.
Catchment and state of origin
Abia Poly is owned by the Abia State Government, but it has not published a catchment list or a quota split for 2026/2027. It admits candidates from every state. I would not count on an indigene advantage unless the school’s own notice mentions one.
Abia Poly Statistics subject combination and O’level requirements
I tried JAMB’s polytechnic brochure for ND Statistics on Myschool three times on 29 October 2026, under different categories, and each page loaded without the requirement text. So I cannot quote JAMB’s line for this course or say whether Abia Poly has a remark. What I can give you is the pattern from an official polytechnic source nearby, and a combination that fits it.
| Requirement | What to plan with | Status |
|---|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics and two of Economics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography or Biology/Agricultural Science | Pattern from Federal Poly Nekede’s brochure; confirm on JAMB’s e-brochure |
| Safest UTME choice | English, Mathematics, Economics and Physics | My advice: fits every common version of the rule |
| O’level | Five credits including English Language and Mathematics, plus three from Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, Economics, Geography, Further Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Studies/ICT | Federal Poly Nekede pattern; Abia Poly has not published its own |
| Sittings | Usually up to two; the 2025/2026 advert reprint mentions “one or two sittings” | Confirm on the school’s notice |
| Abia Poly remark | Unknown (brochure page did not load) | Unverified |
Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, another South East polytechnic, publishes its own revised admission brochure. For ND Statistics it asks for Mathematics and any two of Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Biology/Agricultural Science and Geography, with O’level credits in English, Mathematics and three others. That is a different school, but polytechnic Statistics requirements follow the same JAMB template, so it is a fair guide.
My recommendation is English, Mathematics, Economics and Physics in the UTME. Economics and Physics both appear in every version of the Statistics combination I have seen, so you are covered whichever way JAMB words it. Then check Abia Poly’s entry on the e-brochure during registration before you pay.
At O’level, Mathematics is the subject that matters most. A B or A in Mathematics, plus Further Mathematics or Economics, tells the department you can handle the course. The 2025/2026 advert reprint mentions “at least four (4) Passes” at SSCE or NECO before the text cuts off. JAMB asks for five credits, so plan with five.
Direct Entry and the HND route
There is no Direct Entry into the first year of an ND. ND Statistics admission is through the UTME and CAPS only. After the ND and one year of industrial attachment, you apply to the polytechnic directly for the HND, outside CAPS. HND Statistics is on the HND list in a blog reprint credited to the polytechnic, so you can stay at Abia Poly for the full ND and HND.
For HND admission, a blog reprint credited to the polytechnic’s management lists a ₦5,000 form, five O’level credits, an ND at Lower Credit or above, a one-year industrial attachment and a screening test with no make-up date. I have not seen the original notice. Our Abia Poly HND admission requirements page goes through it in detail.
How Abia Poly screening works
I could not find an official 2026/2027 screening notice from Abia Poly. Its website did not load for me, and Myschool, which usually reprints polytechnic adverts, has none for this session. What follows comes from the 2025/2026 advert reprinted by Myschool and from a blog description of the 2026/2027 form, so check every detail on the portal before you pay.
| Detail | What is known | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Who can apply | Candidates who chose Abia State Polytechnic in the UTME and scored at least the minimum | JAMB rule; blog says first choice |
| Minimum UTME score | 100 (JAMB); some blogs say 120 | 100 official; 120 unofficial |
| Eligibility line in 2025/2026 advert | “At least four (4) Passes at SSCE/NECO level” (the reprint cuts off after this) | Myschool reprint, 26 July 2025 |
| Payment | Generate an invoice on the portal and pay at a bank | Blog (o3schools, 3 February 2026) |
| After payment | Complete the form, upload documents, print the acknowledgement and an exam slip | Blog; suggests a screening test |
| Fee | Not published | Unknown |
| Aggregate formula | Not published | Unknown |
The exam slip in the blog description points to a written or computer test. Abia Poly has not said how it weighs that test against your UTME score, so the safest plan is a strong UTME score plus clean O’level results.
Worked example for an ND Statistics applicant
Take Uchenna, who scored 128 in English, Mathematics, Economics and Physics. Her NECO from one sitting has credits in English, Mathematics, Economics, Physics and Further Mathematics.
- Eligibility: 128 minus 100 = 28. She clears JAMB’s minimum.
- Against the blog figure: 128 minus 120 = 8.
- Against my safe target: 128 minus 130 = minus 2. She is just below it, so a good screening result matters for her.
- UTME combination: Mathematics, Economics and Physics fit every version of the rule I have seen.
- O’level check: five credits including English and Mathematics, with Further Mathematics as a strong extra.
Purely to show how a combined ranking works, take the UTME score divided by 8 (out of 50) plus a screening score out of 50. Uchenna’s 128 gives 16, and a screening score of 36 lifts her to 52 out of 100, ahead of a candidate with 150 (18.75) who scores 30 in screening (48.75). This formula is an illustration only. Abia Poly has not published one.
Your chances of getting Statistics at Abia Poly
- Statistics is usually one of the less crowded science courses at a polytechnic, so a score in the 120s or 130s is often workable.
- Strong Mathematics at O’level counts for more here than in most courses.
- Candidates refused Computer Science are sometimes offered Statistics on CAPS. If that happens, take it seriously: the skills overlap a lot.
- JAMB asked polytechnics to finish 2026/2027 admissions by 31 December 2026, so offers can come late. Keep checking CAPS.
Statistics also gives you more options after school than its reputation suggests. Data analysis is wanted in banks, telecoms, research firms, NGOs and government, and an ND holder who learns a tool like Excel, SPSS or Python can find work quickly.
How to apply for Statistics at Abia Poly, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME correctly: pick Statistics with English, Mathematics and the two subjects JAMB’s e-brochure lists (Economics and Physics is my safe pick). JAMB still lists the school as Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, even though it was renamed Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in November 2024.
- Fix your choice if needed: if Abia Poly was not your choice, do a JAMB change of institution before screening opens. To move into Statistics from another course, see JAMB change of course.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB accredited centre. JAMB cannot approve an offer while CAPS shows no O’level result.
- Fill the screening form: on the Abia Poly applicant portal (portal.abiastatepolytechnic.edu.ng), generate the invoice, pay, complete the form, upload your documents, and print the acknowledgement and exam slip.
- Sit the screening: go with your slip, UTME result slip and O’level results if a test is held.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: Abia Poly has not published its acceptance fee in any official source I reached. Pay only through an invoice generated on the school portal, then complete clearance.
Warning
Admission into Abia Poly comes through JAMB CAPS. If anyone offers you a “special list” slot for money, walk away. A genuine offer appears on your CAPS page, and genuine school payments are made through a portal invoice in your name.
If you still need to sit the UTME, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts, and when results come out, see how to check your JAMB result.
Studying Statistics at Abia Poly
ND Statistics is in the School of Science and Industrial Technology at the Aba campus on the Aba to Owerri Road. The course trains statistical assistants who collect, clean, summarise and present data.
What you study
- Descriptive statistics and probability
- Statistical inference and sampling methods
- Mathematics for statistics, including algebra and calculus basics
- Economic and social statistics, index numbers and time series
- Computer applications and statistical software
- SIWES, communication skills and general studies
This is the usual NBTE pattern for ND Statistics. Abia Poly has not published its own course outline.
Duration and accreditation
Under the standard NBTE structure, the ND runs for two years full time. Students who want the HND then do a one-year industrial attachment (often called IT) before applying, and the HND usually asks for an ND at Lower Credit or above. Abia Poly has not published a course-specific timetable, so treat this as the national pattern.
In 2022 the NBTE withdrew Abia State Polytechnic’s accreditation, and reports said students were barred from NYSC mobilisation. The Abia State Government announced on 1 September 2022 that accreditation had been restored after it released ₦450 million and held talks with the NBTE.
In October 2025 the rector, Dr Christopher Okoro, told journalists that all 33 of the polytechnic’s programmes now had full accreditation and that 17 new programmes had been approved (reported by NAN on 1 October 2025). He also said the school had stopped issuing statements of result, now uploads results online within six weeks of exams, and puts QR codes on certificates so employers can verify them. Those are the rector’s words as reported. I could not check ND Statistics on the NBTE’s own list, so ask the department to confirm its status before you pay fees.
Careers after the ND
- Statistical assistant or data officer in ministries, local governments and agencies
- Field enumerator and data supervisor for surveys and research projects
- Data entry and reporting roles in banks, hospitals, schools and businesses
- Monitoring and evaluation assistant with NGOs
- HND Statistics, then a degree or data analysis certifications

Mistakes that cost Statistics applicants
- Leaving out Mathematics in the UTME: every version of the rule requires it.
- Picking unusual subjects: Literature, CRS or Government do not appear in any Statistics combination I have seen.
- A weak Mathematics grade: a C6 may meet the rule, but it puts you behind other applicants.
- O’level missing on CAPS: JAMB cannot approve the offer.
- Not checking the e-brochure: the requirement text could not be confirmed for this page, so check it when you register.
Abia Poly Statistics: frequently asked questions
What subjects should I write in JAMB for Statistics in Abia Poly? Use of English, Mathematics and two related subjects. English, Mathematics, Economics and Physics fits every common version of the rule; confirm Abia Poly’s entry on JAMB’s e-brochure.
Is 120 enough for Statistics in Abia Poly? It clears JAMB’s 100 and matches the unofficial 120. Your chance is fair, and a good screening result and a strong Mathematics credit will help.
Can I study Statistics at Abia Poly without Physics? Likely yes. In the common pattern, Physics is one of several options, and Economics and Geography can fill the slots. Confirm on the e-brochure, since the JAMB line for Abia Poly could not be checked.
Is there HND Statistics at Abia Poly? HND Statistics appears on a blog reprint of the polytechnic’s HND list. You would need an ND at Lower Credit or above and one year of industrial attachment.
Sources and updates
The 100 minimum for polytechnics and the 31 December 2026 admission deadline come from the News Agency of Nigeria report of JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026). The 2025 figure of 100 is from Nairametrics (8 July 2025) and matching Blueprint and AllAfrica reports. Myschool’s reprint of JAMB’s polytechnic brochure page for ND Statistics did not show the requirement text when I checked it on 29 October 2026, so the subject pattern given here is from Federal Polytechnic Nekede’s revised admission brochure (School of Industrial and Applied Sciences), labelled as such. The course list is from Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic’s 2025/2026 ND/HND admission advert reprinted by Myschool (26 July 2025) and the Myschool list of Abia State Polytechnic courses. The “120 and above” figure and the screening form steps are from o3schools (3 February 2026) and are unofficial. The HND details are from a schoolings.org reprint (page updated 12 March 2026) that I could not match to an original notice. The renaming to Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic on 7 November 2024 and the school’s location are from Wikipedia and news reports of the renaming. The 2022 accreditation withdrawal and restoration are from news reports and the Abia State Government (1 September 2022). The rector’s statement on full accreditation, new programmes, online results and QR-coded certificates is from the NAN report of 1 October 2025. The safe target scores and the worked example are my own advice. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated when Abia Poly publishes its 2027/2028 notice.
