UNIUYO French Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

UNIUYO’s minimum for French (Department of Foreign Languages) is 150, first choice only. JAMB’s brochure says UNIUYO accepts a French proficiency certificate in place of the O’level credit; see that, the DE rules and my safe target.

The UNIUYO cut off mark for French is 150 in the UTME, and that is the figure 2027 candidates should plan with. The University of Uyo set 150 as the minimum for its 2026/2027 Post-UTME and Direct Entry screening, and only for candidates who chose UNIUYO as their first choice. French is taught in the Department of Foreign Languages in UNIUYO’s Faculty of Arts, and UNIUYO did not publish a separate figure for it.

2027/2028 update: UNIUYO cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

UNIUYO does not publish a departmental cut-off for French or for any other course. The 150 is a gate into screening, and the department then fills its places on merit, so the score of the last person admitted sits above 150 and changes every year. My safe target score for French at UNIUYO is 210 or more; that is my own advice, explained below, and it is not a UNIUYO figure.

The 150 floor and first-choice rule held for the last two sessions. French has a small applicant pool because of the subject rule, so the score you need is usually lower than for English or History.

Safe target score for French at UNIUYO (my advice)

This table is my judgement as an admissions adviser. UNIUYO has never published these bands, so treat them as planning numbers.

Your UTME scoreMy read for French at UNIUYO
Below 150Not eligible for UNIUYO screening in any course
150 to 169Eligible to apply, but a French place is unlikely; you may be offered a related course instead
170 to 189A fair chance, helped by good O’level grades
190 to 209Good chance
210 and aboveStrong. This is the range I would aim for.

French has fewer qualified applicants than most arts courses, because the UTME requires French and few schools teach it. That keeps the merit line modest. For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 190, ideally 210, and pair it with clean O’level credits in the subjects listed below.

Merit, catchment and the federal quota

UNIUYO is a federal university, so it admits under the federal guidelines that JAMB applies: 45% of places on merit, 35% for catchment states and 20% for educationally less developed states. UNIUYO has not published which states it treats as its catchment in any source I reached. In practice, a candidate who misses the merit list can still be picked on catchment or ELDS, which is one reason two people with the same score can get different results.

UTME subject combination and O’level requirements for French at UNIUYO

RequirementFrench at UNIUYO
UTME subjectsUse of English, French and any two other Arts or Social Science subjects
O’levelFive credits including French and English Language plus one other Arts subject. UNIUYO remark: accepts a Proficiency Certificate in French (including UNIUYO’s own, or one from the Alliance Française)
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO or NABTEB (GCE also accepted by most universities); confirm on the portal
SittingsJAMB’s brochure gives no UNIUYO sitting rule for French; one sitting is safer
Direct EntryTwo A level passes including French and one other Arts subject. UNIUYO remarks: accepts NCE plus an O’level credit in English Language; accepts NCE with credit in French
Other requirementNo course test or interview is mentioned in the 2026/2027 notice

French is compulsory in JAMB’s UTME line, and very few secondary schools teach it to WAEC level, so this is the course where the subject rule screens out most people. The UNIUYO remark helps: if you have no O’level French credit, a Proficiency Certificate in French, including one from the University of Uyo itself or from the Alliance Française, is accepted in its place. JAMB’s general line for this course does not name Mathematics. UNIUYO’s Basic Studies route asks for English and Mathematics, and many Nigerian arts departments look for a Maths credit at clearance, so having one is the safe position.

UNIUYO’s 2026/2027 advert lists the programme as Foreign Languages (French), and JAMB lists it for UNIUYO as French.

Basic Studies: another way into French

UNIUYO also runs a one-year Basic Studies programme that feeds all its faculties. The 2026/2027 advert, signed by the Registrar, Mrs Blossom E. Okorie, asks for five credits including English and Mathematics plus three relevant subjects at not more than two sittings, says no JAMB score is required, and lets successful students move into 200 level through JAMB Direct Entry if they meet the course criteria. The form cost ₦15,500, and admission is usually through a CBT screening test. Arts candidates can use it too: the advert lists the Faculty of Arts among those Basic Studies feeds.

How UNIUYO Post-UTME screening works

The 2026/2027 notice was titled “Sale of Admissions form for 2026/2027 Post-UTME/Direct Entry Screening Exercise”. It opened screening to UTME candidates with 150 or more who picked UNIUYO first, and to Direct Entry candidates who picked UNIUYO first in JAMB DE.

UNIUYO’s notice calls the process a “screening exercise” and says nothing about a written or CBT test for regular candidates, so I can’t tell you there is a test or that there isn’t. Prepare as if there will be one, using the JAMB syllabus for your four subjects.

Worked example for a French candidate

UNIUYO has not published how it ranks candidates, so the useful calculation is the gap between your score, the 150 minimum and the safe target.

Take Ndifreke Ukpong, who scored 196 with B3 in English, B2 in French, C4 in Literature, C5 in Government and C4 in Mathematics.

  1. Eligibility: 196 minus 150 = 46. Ndifreke clears UNIUYO’s minimum by 46 marks.
  2. Against my safe target: 210 minus 196 = 14. Ndifreke is 14 marks short of the score I would call strong, but inside my good-chance band.
  3. O’level check: English, French and three other credits, with Mathematics included. Nothing rules her out.
  4. What I would advise: at 196 she has a good chance. Keep French first and keep the French credit visible on CAPS.

Aniema Okon scored 160 with no O’level French, but a Proficiency Certificate in French from the Alliance Française. 160 minus 150 = 10, so Aniema can apply. Under the UNIUYO remark her Alliance Française certificate can stand in for the O’level French credit. Her score is low, so she should confirm the certificate is accepted at screening and prepare hard.

Some Nigerian universities rank candidates with a 50:50 aggregate: UTME score divided by 8 (out of 50) plus the screening score scaled to 50. UNIUYO has not published this or any formula, so this is only an illustration. On that method, Ndifreke’s 196 becomes 24.50, and a 64% screening score adds 32, for an aggregate of 56.50 out of 100.

How to apply for French at UNIUYO, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME with UNIUYO first: pick French (listed by JAMB as “French”) with English, French and two other Arts or Social Science subjects. If UNIUYO ended up as your second choice, do a JAMB change of institution before UNIUYO opens its form.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at an accredited CBT centre and check that every subject and grade shows correctly on your JAMB profile.
  4. Create an account on the UNIUYO portal: go to admissions.uniuyo.edu.ng, register with your details and verify the account.
  5. Pay ₦2,000 with Remita: generate the RRR on the portal and pay it; keep the receipt.
  6. Complete the form and upload documents: fill every section, upload the requested documents as PDF files, then print the 2026/2027 Screening Exercise Slip.
  7. Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept within the window JAMB gives you.
  8. Pay acceptance and do clearance: UNIUYO has not published its acceptance fee in any official source I reached, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay anything.

Warning

UNIUYO’s 2026/2027 notice screened only candidates who chose UNIUYO first. If UNIUYO is your second choice, do a JAMB change of institution before the screening form opens.

JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 deadline for public universities; that date has now passed. Supplementary or late lists can still show up on CAPS, so if you applied, keep checking your status. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains what each status means.

In 2023/2024 UNIUYO ran a supplementary admission for candidates who had registered for its screening but missed their first-choice course. The Registrar’s notice took candidates with 140 and above into limited vacancies in nine faculties: Agriculture, Arts, Management Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Science, Social Sciences, Education, and Vocational Education, Library and Information Science. Arts was one of those faculties, so a candidate who missed a more competitive course could apply for a programme listed there, possibly including French. UNIUYO does not run a supplementary exercise on a fixed schedule, and its 2026/2027 floor is 150, so treat the old 140 as history.

Studying French at UNIUYO

French is offered by the Department of Foreign Languages in UNIUYO’s Faculty of Arts. Many Nigerian French degrees include a period of immersion in a French-speaking country or at the Nigeria French Language Village, Badagry; UNIUYO has not confirmed its arrangement or the programme length in sources I reached.

Accreditation

I could not find an NUC accreditation report that names French at UNIUYO, so its current status is not confirmed here. UNIUYO lists the course in its 2026/2027 advert and JAMB carries it on UNIUYO’s course list, which shows it is admitting. Ask the department for its latest NUC result before you pay acceptance.

What you study

  • Language: French grammar, phonetics, oral and written expression, and translation.
  • Literature: French and francophone African literature.
  • Civilisation: history and culture of France and francophone countries.
  • Immersion and project: a language immersion period (arrangement not confirmed) and a final-year essay.

Careers after French

  • Translation and interpreting
  • Teaching French (with a teaching qualification)
  • Diplomacy, international organisations and border or customs work
  • Tourism, hospitality and businesses that trade with francophone neighbours

If your score falls short of your first course, read our guide to JAMB change of course and how to check your JAMB result and what to do with the score. For another federal option nearby, see our UNICAL cut-off mark guide.

Mistakes that cost French applicants a UNIUYO place

  • Treating 150 as the admission score: it only lets you into screening.
  • Leaving UNIUYO as second choice: the 2026/2027 notice screened first-choice candidates.
  • Registering the UTME without French: it is compulsory in JAMB’s line.
  • Assuming any French certificate works: the remark names a Proficiency Certificate, including UNIUYO’s and the Alliance Française’s; confirm others with the department.
  • O’level missing on CAPS: admission cannot be processed without it.
  • Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: the acceptance fee and clearance at UNIUYO are separate steps.

If you are writing the UTME again in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and how to do a JAMB change of institution.
