UNIUYO English Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

UNIUYO’s minimum for English is 150 in the UTME, first choice only. JAMB’s brochure adds a UNIUYO Mathematics credit rule and a 9-point Direct Entry rule; both are here with my safe target and the screening steps.

The UNIUYO cut off mark for English is 150 in the UTME, and that is the figure 2027 candidates should plan with. The University of Uyo set 150 as the minimum for its 2026/2027 Post-UTME and Direct Entry screening, and only for candidates who chose UNIUYO as their first choice. English is in UNIUYO’s Faculty of Arts, and UNIUYO did not publish a separate figure for it.

2027/2028 update: UNIUYO cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

UNIUYO does not publish a departmental cut-off for English or for any other course. The 150 is a gate into screening, and the department then fills its places on merit, so the score of the last person admitted sits above 150 and changes every year. My safe target score for English at UNIUYO is 230 or more; that is my own advice, explained below, and it is not a UNIUYO figure.

The floor has been 150 with the first-choice rule for the last two sessions, and the Faculty of Arts was among the nine faculties in the 2023/2024 supplementary exercise. English is one of the busier arts courses because it feeds teaching, media and law-adjacent careers.

Safe target score for English at UNIUYO (my advice)

This table is my judgement as an admissions adviser. UNIUYO has never published these bands, so treat them as planning numbers.

Your UTME scoreMy read for English at UNIUYO
Below 150Not eligible for UNIUYO screening in any course
150 to 189Eligible to apply, but an English place is unlikely; you may be offered a related course instead
190 to 209A fair chance, helped by good O’level grades
210 to 229Good chance
230 and aboveStrong. This is the range I would aim for.

English is usually the most competitive course in an arts faculty after Law-type courses, and at UNIUYO it shares applicants with the new communication and media programmes. For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 210, ideally 230, and pair it with clean O’level credits in the subjects listed below.

Merit, catchment and the federal quota

UNIUYO is a federal university, so it admits under the federal guidelines that JAMB applies: 45% of places on merit, 35% for catchment states and 20% for educationally less developed states. UNIUYO has not published which states it treats as its catchment in any source I reached. In practice, a candidate who misses the merit list can still be picked on catchment or ELDS, which is one reason two people with the same score can get different results.

UTME subject combination and O’level requirements for English at UNIUYO

RequirementEnglish at UNIUYO
UTME subjectsUse of English, Literature in English, one other Arts subject and another Arts or Social Science subject
O’levelGeneral line: five credits including Literature in English, English Language and three Arts or Social Science subjects. UNIUYO remark: credit passes in Mathematics and two other Arts or Social Science subjects
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO or NABTEB (GCE also accepted by most universities); confirm on the portal
SittingsJAMB’s brochure gives no UNIUYO sitting rule for English; two sittings is the usual allowance, one is safer
Direct EntryTwo A level passes including Literature in English and one other Arts subject. UNIUYO remarks: a minimum of nine points in two or three GCE A level subjects or equivalent; NCE pass in relevant subjects or A level in English Language and Literature in English
Other requirementNo course test or interview is mentioned in the 2026/2027 notice

JAMB’s brochure has two UNIUYO rules for this course. At O’level, “ADELEKE and UNIUYO” require a credit in Mathematics on top of English and Literature, which many arts candidates do not expect. In Direct Entry, UNIUYO asks for at least nine points across two or three A level subjects. Literature in English is compulsory in the UTME, so do not register Government, CRS and Economics alone.

UNIUYO’s department appears as English in its 2026/2027 advert, while JAMB lists the course for UNIUYO as English Language. Choose that entry on JAMB.

Basic Studies: another way into English

UNIUYO also runs a one-year Basic Studies programme that feeds all its faculties. The 2026/2027 advert, signed by the Registrar, Mrs Blossom E. Okorie, asks for five credits including English and Mathematics plus three relevant subjects at not more than two sittings, says no JAMB score is required, and lets successful students move into 200 level through JAMB Direct Entry if they meet the course criteria. The form cost ₦15,500, and admission is usually through a CBT screening test. Arts candidates can use it too: the advert lists the Faculty of Arts among those Basic Studies feeds.

How UNIUYO Post-UTME screening works

The 2026/2027 notice was titled “Sale of Admissions form for 2026/2027 Post-UTME/Direct Entry Screening Exercise”. It opened screening to UTME candidates with 150 or more who picked UNIUYO first, and to Direct Entry candidates who picked UNIUYO first in JAMB DE.

UNIUYO’s notice calls the process a “screening exercise” and says nothing about a written or CBT test for regular candidates, so I can’t tell you there is a test or that there isn’t. Prepare as if there will be one, using the JAMB syllabus for your four subjects.

Worked example for an English candidate

UNIUYO has not published how it ranks candidates, so the useful calculation is the gap between your score, the 150 minimum and the safe target.

Take Mfoniso Akpan, who scored 214 with B2 in English, B3 in Literature in English, C4 in Mathematics, B3 in Government and C5 in CRS from one sitting.

  1. Eligibility: 214 minus 150 = 64. Mfoniso clears UNIUYO’s minimum by 64 marks.
  2. Against my safe target: 230 minus 214 = 16. Mfoniso is 16 marks short of the score I would call strong, but inside my good-chance band.
  3. O’level check: English, Literature and Mathematics at credit, which meets UNIUYO’s remark, plus two other arts or social science credits.
  4. What I would advise: at 214 she is in my good-chance band. I would keep English first and push for a strong screening result.

Kufre Edet scored 172 with B3 in English and Literature but D7 in Mathematics. 172 minus 150 = 22, so Kufre can apply. The D7 in Mathematics breaks UNIUYO’s remark for English, so even a better score would not fix his file. He should resit Mathematics or choose a course without the rule.

Some Nigerian universities rank candidates with a 50:50 aggregate: UTME score divided by 8 (out of 50) plus the screening score scaled to 50. UNIUYO has not published this or any formula, so this is only an illustration. On that method, Mfoniso’s 214 becomes 26.75, and a 64% screening score adds 32, for an aggregate of 58.75 out of 100.

How to apply for English at UNIUYO, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME with UNIUYO first: pick English (listed by JAMB as “English Language”) with English, Literature in English, one other Arts subject and one Arts or Social Science subject. If UNIUYO ended up as your second choice, do a JAMB change of institution before UNIUYO opens its form.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at an accredited CBT centre and check that every subject and grade shows correctly on your JAMB profile.
  4. Create an account on the UNIUYO portal: go to admissions.uniuyo.edu.ng, register with your details and verify the account.
  5. Pay ₦2,000 with Remita: generate the RRR on the portal and pay it; keep the receipt.
  6. Complete the form and upload documents: fill every section, upload the requested documents as PDF files, then print the 2026/2027 Screening Exercise Slip.
  7. Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept within the window JAMB gives you.
  8. Pay acceptance and do clearance: UNIUYO has not published its acceptance fee in any official source I reached, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay anything.

Warning

UNIUYO’s 2026/2027 notice screened only candidates who chose UNIUYO first. If UNIUYO is your second choice, do a JAMB change of institution before the screening form opens.

JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 deadline for public universities; that date has now passed. Supplementary or late lists can still show up on CAPS, so if you applied, keep checking your status. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains what each status means.

In 2023/2024 UNIUYO ran a supplementary admission for candidates who had registered for its screening but missed their first-choice course. The Registrar’s notice took candidates with 140 and above into limited vacancies in nine faculties: Agriculture, Arts, Management Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Science, Social Sciences, Education, and Vocational Education, Library and Information Science. Arts was one of those faculties, so a candidate who missed a more competitive course could apply for a programme listed there, possibly including English. UNIUYO does not run a supplementary exercise on a fixed schedule, and its 2026/2027 floor is 150, so treat the old 140 as history.

Studying English at UNIUYO

English sits in UNIUYO’s Faculty of Arts. A B.A. in Nigeria normally runs for four years; UNIUYO has not confirmed the length in sources I reached.

Accreditation

I could not find an NUC accreditation report that names English at UNIUYO, so its current status is not confirmed here. UNIUYO lists the course in its 2026/2027 advert and JAMB carries it on UNIUYO’s course list, which shows it is admitting. Ask the department for its latest NUC result before you pay acceptance.

What you study

  • Language: phonetics and phonology, syntax, semantics and the English language in Nigeria.
  • Literature: poetry, drama and prose from Africa, Britain and America, plus literary theory.
  • Skills: stylistics, creative writing, and research methods.
  • Final year: a long essay (project) in language or literature.

Careers after English

  • Teaching (with a teaching qualification) and lecturing after postgraduate study
  • Writing, editing, publishing and content work
  • Media, public relations and corporate communication roles
  • Civil service, administration and graduate entry into Law

If your score falls short of your first course, read our guide to JAMB change of course and how to check your JAMB result and what to do with the score. For another federal option nearby, see our UNICAL cut-off mark guide.

Mistakes that cost English applicants a UNIUYO place

  • Treating 150 as the admission score: it only lets you into screening.
  • Leaving UNIUYO as second choice: the 2026/2027 notice screened first-choice candidates.
  • No credit in Mathematics: JAMB’s brochure says UNIUYO requires it for English.
  • No Literature in English in the UTME: it is compulsory in the subject line.
  • O’level missing on CAPS: admission cannot be processed without it.
  • Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: the acceptance fee and clearance at UNIUYO are separate steps.

If you are writing the UTME again in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and how to do a JAMB change of institution.

UNIUYO cut off mark for English: frequently asked questions

Is Mathematics compulsory for English at UNIUYO? Yes, at O’level. JAMB’s brochure says UNIUYO requires a credit in Mathematics plus two other Arts or Social Science subjects for English.

Is 200 enough for English at UNIUYO? 200 clears the 150 minimum comfortably and gives you a fair chance. English is one of the busier arts courses, so I would aim for about 230.

How many points does UNIUYO need for English Direct Entry? JAMB’s brochure says UNIUYO requires at least nine points in two or three GCE A level subjects or equivalent, with Literature in English among them.

Does UNIUYO accept second choice candidates for English? The 2026/2027 notice screened only candidates who chose UNIUYO first. Do a change of institution if UNIUYO was your second choice.
