ABSU Physics Education Cut-Off Mark 2027/2028 and Admission Requirements

ABSU’s minimum for Physics Education is 150 in the UTME. See the JAMB course name, UTME and O’level rules, Direct Entry, the NUC record and how ABSU screens.

The ABSU Physics Education cut off mark is 150 in the UTME. Abia State University (ABSU) set that minimum for every regular degree course in its 2026/2027 screening notice, for candidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice. There is no separate published figure for Physics Education, so 150 makes you eligible and your O’level grades decide the rest.

2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

On JAMB the course is listed as Education and Physics. This page covers the exact UTME, O’level and Direct Entry lines from the JAMB brochure, a safe target score, how ABSU screens, and the NUC record, which shows denied as the latest result for this course at ABSU. Read that section before you pay any fee.

ABSU published a single 150 minimum for all courses in 2026/2027. A Physics Education cut-off on any blog is not from ABSU. The working cut-off is whatever score the last admitted candidate had, and ABSU does not release it.

Safe target score for Physics Education at ABSU (my advice)

Science education courses draw fewer applicants than Medicine, Nursing or Computer Science, and many students in them first applied for another course. Competition is usually moderate. The table is my advice, not an ABSU rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for ABSU Physics Education
Below 150Not eligible for screening
150 to 159Eligible; your O’level grades decide most of it
160 to 179A reasonable chance with clean credits
180 and aboveStrong

I would aim for at least 165, with good grades in Physics and Mathematics. Physics teachers are scarce in many Nigerian schools, so the course is worth taking seriously if you enjoy the subject.

JAMB subject combination and O’level for Physics Education at ABSU

RequirementWhat the JAMB brochure says
Course name on JAMBEducation and Physics
UTME (general line)Physics, Mathematics or Chemistry plus one other subject
UTME (ABSU remark)None (remarks name OAU, UNIBEN, UNILAG, ABU and others, not ABSU)
O’level (general line)Five credits including English Language, Physics, Mathematics and two other science subjects, or NTC/NBC
O’level (ABSU remark)None
Direct Entry (general line)Two A-level passes in Physics and Mathematics, or NCE credit/merit in relevant subjects
Direct Entry (ABSU remark)None, and no “No Direct Entry” remark names ABSU

The general UTME line is loose: Physics, then Mathematics or Chemistry, then one other subject. I would write Use of English, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. That combination satisfies the line however it is read, matches what most other universities ask for in their remarks, and leaves Industrial Physics and Mathematics Education open if you change course.

O’level checklist

  • English Language: credit
  • Mathematics: credit
  • Physics: credit
  • Two other science subjects (Chemistry and Biology or Further Mathematics are the usual pair): credits
  • NTC or NBC results are also named in the brochure line

Direct Entry

You need two A-level passes in Physics and Mathematics, or an NCE with credit or merit in relevant subjects, such as Physics/Mathematics or Physics/Chemistry. ABSU has no remark on this course, so the general line applies. Confirm the entry level with ABSU before you buy the Direct Entry form.

NUC accreditation: what the record shows for ABSU Physics Education

NUC’s publication of accreditation results from 1990 to 2025 (uploaded in September 2026) lists ABSU’s Education Physics with this run of results: Interim, Full, Interim, Full, Denied. The latest entry is Denied, and no maturity date follows it. The extracted text does not line up each result with its year, so I cannot tell you which exercise produced the denial.

A denied result means the programme failed NUC’s minimum standards at its last visit. NUC’s then acting Executive Secretary, Chris Maiyaki, told the ICIR in February 2024 that a programme that keeps failing can receive an outcome statement that leads to admissions into it being suspended. I found no NUC or ABSU statement saying whether ABSU has since been revisited for Physics Education, or whether it admitted new students into it in 2026/2027. The course is still on ABSU’s JAMB course list as of 29 October 2026.

Several ABSU education courses share this result in the same record, including Chemistry Education, Mathematics Education, Biology Education and Integrated Science. Others are listed as full, such as Business Education, Agricultural Science Education and Education Government (Political Science Education). Before you pay acceptance or school fees, ask the ABSU admissions office or the Faculty of Education in writing whether Physics Education is admitting and what its current NUC status is. If it is not admitting, the closest option at ABSU is Pure and Industrial Physics (listed by NUC as Physics, full).

How ABSU screens Physics Education applicants

The Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, signed ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice. I could not open the original on the ABSU website, so the details below come from two reprints that agree with each other: Osilight (posted 9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026). The notice covers every regular degree course, education courses included.

DetailWhat the 2026/2027 notice said
Who could applyCandidates who chose ABSU as first or second choice, or who changed to ABSU, and scored 150 or more in the UTME
Direct EntryBasic five O’level credit passes under ABSU’s entry requirements
Where to registerOnline at www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng
What to uploadUTME result, O’level result and degree certificate where applicable, on the ABSU portal (www.portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal
Fee₦2,000 by e-payment through the banks named in the notice, or by debit card
Missing the screeningCandidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission”
Written testNot mentioned; the notice describes online document screening
Closing dateNot stated in the reprints

The bank names came out garbled in the reprint, so pay through the options shown on the ABSU portal itself. Since the notice mentions no written test, ABSU ranks you on what it can see: your UTME score and your O’level grades.

Worked example for Physics Education candidates

ABSU has not published an aggregate formula. To show how O’level grades can move you up or down, I use an illustrative method common at Nigerian universities: UTME score divided by 8 (up to 50 points) plus O’level points for five relevant subjects, where A1 = 10, B2 = 9, B3 = 8, C4 = 7, C5 = 6 and C6 = 5 (up to 50 points). This is my example, not ABSU’s formula.

  1. Ikenna scored 164 with B3 in English, A1 in Mathematics, B2 in Physics, B3 in Chemistry and C4 in Biology. UTME points: 164 ÷ 8 = 20.5. O’level points: 8 + 10 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 42. Illustrative total: 62.5.
  2. Ebuka scored 185 with C6 in English, C6 in Mathematics, C5 in Physics, C6 in Chemistry and C6 in Biology. UTME points: 185 ÷ 8 = 23.125. O’level points: 5 + 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 = 26. Illustrative total: 49.125.
  3. The result: Ikenna finishes about 13 points ahead despite 21 fewer UTME marks, because his O’level grades are much stronger.

How to apply for Physics Education at ABSU, step by step

  1. Get a JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the SIM linked to that NIN. The code arrives by SMS.
  2. Register the UTME with the right course name: pick Education and Physics at Abia State University, with Use of English, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. ABSU screened first and second choice candidates in 2026/2027, but first choice is still the cleaner position. To move ABSU up later, use a JAMB change of institution.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at an accredited JAMB CBT centre once your result is out. Check that English, Mathematics, Physics and your two other sciences are all on the upload.
  4. Register for ABSU screening: when the notice is out, go to www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng, pay the screening fee (₦2,000 in 2026/2027) and upload your UTME result and O’level on the ABSU portal.
  5. Keep your receipts: save the payment receipt and a printout of the completed screening form for clearance.
  6. Check your status: watch the ABSU portal and your JAMB CAPS page. ABSU offers show on CAPS first.
  7. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gives four weeks. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  8. Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU’s acceptance and school fees were not in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on your ABSU portal invoice.

Before you pay

NUC’s latest recorded result for ABSU Physics Education is Denied. Confirm with ABSU’s admissions office that the course is admitting before you pay any fee, and pay only through the ABSU portal. Every genuine offer appears on JAMB CAPS.

JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 admission deadline for public universities such as ABSU (News Agency of Nigeria, 11 May 2026) and kept that date when it restored CAPS in September (Nairametrics, 28 September 2026). JAMB also said in May 2026 that any admission done outside CAPS is illegal, so your CAPS page is the record that counts.

Physics Education at ABSU: the programme

Physics Education is in ABSU’s College of Education at the Uturu main campus in Isuikwuato LGA. ABSU started in 1981 as Imo State University and became Abia State University after Abia State was created in 1991. The course prepares you to teach Physics in secondary schools, so you study Physics to degree level along with education courses.

What you study

ABSU has not published a course outline that I could reach. A Physics Education degree in Nigeria usually covers:

  • Mechanics, waves and optics, electricity and magnetism, heat and modern physics, with practicals.
  • Mathematics for physics: calculus, vectors and differential equations.
  • Education foundations: psychology of learning, philosophy and sociology of education.
  • Physics teaching methods, improvising apparatus for school laboratories, and assessment.
  • Teaching practice in a secondary school and a final-year project.

Degree, duration and teaching practice

Science education degrees in Nigeria are usually awarded as B.Sc (Ed) and take four years for UTME entrants, with Direct Entry candidates normally starting at 200 level. I could not reach an ABSU page that confirms the title or duration. Teachers also register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria after graduating.

Careers

  • Physics teacher in secondary schools, where qualified Physics teachers are in short supply.
  • Science teacher in technical colleges and tutorial centres.
  • Technical and laboratory support roles, with extra training.
  • Curriculum, testing and education publishing work.
  • Postgraduate study in physics, science education or educational technology.

If Chemistry is one of your UTME subjects, revise with our JAMB Chemistry syllabus. If you are writing in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts, and when results are out, see how to check your JAMB result. If your score or subjects do not fit, our JAMB change of course guide shows how to switch before admission closes.

Mistakes that cost Physics Education applicants an ABSU place

  • Picking “Physics” on JAMB: the teaching course is Education and Physics.
  • Only one other science at O’level: the line asks for two besides Physics and Mathematics.
  • Paying fees without checking the course is admitting: NUC’s latest recorded result for it is denied.
  • Stopping at 150: that score only makes you eligible for screening.
  • Not registering for screening: the notice says such candidates will not be considered.
  • Missing the CAPS window: JAMB gives four weeks to accept.

ABSU Physics Education: frequently asked questions

What subjects do I need for Physics Education in ABSU? For the UTME, Use of English, Physics, Mathematics or Chemistry, and one other subject; Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry is the safest set. At O’level you need five credits including English, Physics, Mathematics and two other sciences.

Is 155 enough for Physics Education at ABSU? 155 is above ABSU’s 150 minimum, so you can be screened, but your O’level grades will have to carry you. I would aim for 165 or more.

Is Physics Education in ABSU accredited by NUC? NUC’s 1990 to 2025 results show denied as the latest result for ABSU’s Education Physics. Get written confirmation from ABSU that the course is admitting before paying fees.

Can I use NCE for Direct Entry into Physics Education at ABSU? Yes. The brochure accepts NCE credit or merit in relevant subjects, or A-level Physics and Mathematics, and ABSU has no remark against Direct Entry for this course.

Sources and updates

The 150 minimum, the first and second choice rule, the Direct Entry line, the ₦2,000 fee, the registration and upload steps and the warning about candidates who fail to register come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, as reprinted by Osilight (9 June 2026) and Myschool (8 June 2026); I could not open the original on the ABSU website. The national minimum of 150, the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities, the four-week CAPS window and the warning on admissions outside CAPS come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026), and the confirmation that the deadline stands from Nairametrics (28 September 2026). The JAMB course name comes from ABSU’s JAMB course list on Myschool, and the UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules from Myschool’s reprint of the JAMB brochure entry for Education and Physics. The accreditation history comes from NUC’s accreditation results, 1990 to 2025 publication, and the remarks on non-performing programmes from the ICIR interview with NUC’s Chris Maiyaki (17 February 2024). Campus and history details come from Wikipedia. The safe target table and the worked example are my own advice and illustration. ABSU’s fees, the exact degree title and the duration were not published in any source I reached. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated if ABSU publishes a departmental cut-off, new requirements or a new accreditation result.
