The MOUAU Geology cut off mark is 150 in the UTME, with Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike as your first choice. MOUAU set that minimum for every course in its 2026/2027 screening notice and gave no separate figure for Geology. So 150 is the official number, and anything else you read is somebody’s guess.
2027/2028 update: MOUAU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Clearing 150 lets you register for screening; the place itself goes to the stronger applicants. Below are the official figures, my safe target score, the JAMB brochure rules for Geology (including an O’level detail many candidates miss), how MOUAU screening works, a worked example, the CAPS steps and what you study.
MOUAU Geology cut off mark: the official figures
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Source |
|---|---|---|
| MOUAU minimum UTME score (every course) | 150, with MOUAU as first choice | MOUAU screening notice, via Myschool reprint (20 June 2026) |
| JAMB national minimum for universities | 150 | JAMB 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026) |
| Departmental cut-off for Geology | Not published | MOUAU has released no course figure |
| Screening fee | ₦2,000 through Remita | MOUAU screening notice |
| College | College of Physical and Applied Sciences (COLPAS) | MOUAU department list |
| UTME subjects | Use of English + any three of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Geography | JAMB brochure (Myschool reprint) |
| Safe target score | 190 and above | My advice, not a MOUAU figure |
Cut-off history for Geology at MOUAU
| Session | Figure | What it means | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Lowest UTME score allowed to register for MOUAU screening, all courses, MOUAU as first choice | MOUAU notice signed by the Registrar, read through Myschool’s reprint |
| 2026 (national) | 150 | JAMB’s floor for every university | Official, JAMB policy meeting |
| 2025/2026 | Not verified | Blogs say 150, but I could not open MOUAU’s own 2025 notice | Unconfirmed |
| Any year, Geology only | Not published | MOUAU has never released a merit cut-off for this course in any source I found | No official figure |
MOUAU uses one floor of 150 for every course. Any “MOUAU Geology departmental cut-off” on a blog has no MOUAU document behind it. The merit line is set after screening and is not made public.
Safe target score for Geology at MOUAU (my advice)
Geology usually draws fewer applicants than courses like Computer Science or the engineering degrees, but a place is still not automatic. The bands below are my own judgement. MOUAU has not published them.
| Your UTME score | My read for MOUAU Geology |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible to register for MOUAU screening |
| 150 to 169 | Eligible to register; risky on merit |
| 170 to 189 | Possible with good O’level grades from one sitting |
| 190 to 219 | Competitive |
| 220 and above | Strong |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 190, with your O’level credits from one sitting. That leaves a cushion if Geology turns out more crowded than usual in your year.
MOUAU is a federal university, so it takes students from every state. It has not said how it shares places between merit, catchment areas and educationally less developed states. Do not count on your state of origin to rescue a weak score; plan as if merit decides.
JAMB subject combination for Geology at MOUAU
JAMB’s brochure entry for Geology, as reprinted by Myschool, allows any three of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Geography, plus the compulsory Use of English. MOUAU has no remark on the entry, so the general rule applies.
| UTME subject | Status |
|---|---|
| Use of English | Compulsory |
| Any three of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Geography | Your choice of three |
No single subject is compulsory beyond English, but I would not walk in without Chemistry and Mathematics. Mineralogy, geochemistry and geophysics lean on both, and most other Nigerian universities want them for Geology, which matters if you later change institution. Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, or Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology, are the safest sets. Economics, Government and Agricultural Science are not on the list.
O’level requirements for Geology
| Requirement | What applies |
|---|---|
| General rule | Five credits in English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and any other subject |
| MOUAU remark | None shown on the brochure entry |
| Sittings | MOUAU’s notice says the number of sittings is weighted, so one sitting ranks you higher |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO, NABTEB |
| Awaiting result | MOUAU told candidates not to register for screening until their results were out |
Two things stand out. Biology is a required credit, so a candidate with Physics but no Biology credit does not meet the brochure rule. And Physics is not required at O’level, although I would still use it as your fifth subject because it supports the geophysics side of the degree.
Direct Entry into MOUAU Geology
| Route | What the brochure says |
|---|---|
| General A level route | Two A level passes from Geology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Geography |
| MOUAU remark | None shown on the brochure entry |
With no MOUAU remark, the general A level rule is the guide. MOUAU’s screening notice did not cover Direct Entry details, so if you hold an ND or HND in a geology-related field, confirm with the department that it takes diploma holders before you buy the DE form. You still need the O’level credits above.
How MOUAU screening works for Geology applicants
MOUAU’s 2026/2027 notice, signed by the Registrar, Dr (Mrs) Nkeiruka Charity Mbanasor, set the rules below for UTME candidates. The same notice covered every department, Geology included. Expect the 2027/2028 exercise to look similar, but go by the new notice once it is out.
| Detail | MOUAU 2026/2027 screening |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates with 150 or more in the 2026 UTME who chose MOUAU first; others could first change to MOUAU on the JAMB portal |
| Registration opened | 6 June 2026, online through www.mouau.edu.ng |
| Registration and validation | portal.mouau.edu.ng |
| Fee | ₦2,000 through Remita, by card or cash at any bank |
| O’level | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB results uploaded to JAMB CAPS at an accredited CBT centre |
| How O’level counts | O’level results and the number of sittings are weighted |
| Awaiting results | Candidates were told not to register until their results were out |
| Payment problems | portal@mouau.edu.ng |
| Closing date and test date | Not stated in the notice as reprinted |
The notice does not mention a written Post-UTME test, so I would not assume one. The safest plan is to expect MOUAU to rank you on your UTME score and your O’level grades, with a single sitting counting in your favour. Keep checking the portal anyway, because the notice told candidates to look there for screening results and admission status, and any extra step would be announced there too.
Worked example: two Geology candidates
MOUAU has not published an aggregate formula. This example only measures each score against the official minimum and my safe target, so treat it as illustrative.
Ebuka scored 203 in the UTME with Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. His WAEC, from one sitting, shows B2 in Chemistry, B3 in Mathematics, B3 in Biology, C4 in English and C5 in Physics.
- Eligibility: 203 minus 150 = 53. He clears MOUAU’s minimum.
- Against my safe target: 203 minus 190 = 13. He sits just above my target.
- O’level check: English, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, one sitting. The rule is met.
- Advice: keep MOUAU first, register early and accept on CAPS as soon as an offer shows.
Adaeze scored 176, and her O’level has no Biology credit. She clears 150 by 26 marks, but she does not meet the brochure’s O’level rule for Geology. Before screening she should write NECO or WAEC GCE to add a Biology credit, or consider a course whose O’level rule she already meets.
How to apply for Geology at MOUAU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN. JAMB replies with the profile code you need to buy the UTME form.
- Register the UTME with MOUAU as first choice: pick Geology and sit Use of English plus three of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Geography. If another school is already your first choice, do a JAMB change of institution before MOUAU opens screening.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: go to a JAMB-accredited CBT centre with your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result. MOUAU’s notice makes this upload a condition for screening.
- Register for screening: when MOUAU announces the exercise on www.mouau.edu.ng, register and validate on portal.mouau.edu.ng with your JAMB registration number.
- Pay the screening fee: it was ₦2,000 in 2026/2027, paid on the Remita invoice the portal generates. Print the receipt and every slip.
- Watch the portal and CAPS: MOUAU posts screening results and admission status on its portal, and the offer itself appears on JAMB CAPS.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept in 2026.
- Pay acceptance and complete clearance: MOUAU has not published its acceptance fee or school fees in any source I reached. Pay only the amount on the invoice from your MOUAU portal.
Warning
Some websites print a MOUAU “departmental cut-off” for Geology, and some people sell admission “slots”. MOUAU’s notice set one minimum of 150 for every course, and every genuine offer shows on JAMB CAPS. Pay MOUAU only through the Remita invoice from its own portal.
JAMB told public universities to finish 2026/2027 admissions by 31 October 2026. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status you may see, and our guide on checking your JAMB result covers what to do with your score.
Studying Geology at MOUAU
Geology is one of six departments in MOUAU’s College of Physical and Applied Sciences (COLPAS). The others are Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Statistics. MOUAU sits at Umudike, about 10 km from Umuahia in Abia State. The Federal Government set it up in November 1992 as a university of agriculture, so science departments like this one share the campus with a large agriculture and veterinary community.
What you study
MOUAU has not put a course outline for this department online in any source I reached. A Nigerian B.Sc in Geology normally covers the areas below.
- Foundation year: chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology and general studies.
- Earth materials: mineralogy, crystallography and petrology of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
- Earth history: stratigraphy, palaeontology and sedimentology.
- Structures: structural geology and geological map interpretation.
- Applied geology: petroleum geology, hydrogeology, engineering geology, economic geology and geophysics.
- Field mapping: field trips and an independent mapping exercise, usually in the later years.
- SIWES and project: an industrial placement and a final year project.
Duration and accreditation
A B.Sc in Geology at a Nigerian university normally takes four years for UTME entrants, and Direct Entry students join at 200 level. MOUAU’s own duration for this programme is not confirmed in the sources I reached. I could not confirm the programme’s current NUC accreditation status either. Geoscientists in Nigeria register with the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG), so ask whether MOUAU graduates have any issue registering. Before you pay acceptance, ask the department whether the programme is fully accredited and admitting.

Mistakes that cost Geology applicants a MOUAU place
- No Biology credit: the brochure asks for Biology at O’level, even though Biology is optional in the UTME.
- Arts or commercial subjects in the UTME: Economics, Government or Agricultural Science are not on the Geology list.
- Treating 150 as safe: it only lets you register for screening.
- Choosing MOUAU second: the notice asked for MOUAU as first choice.
- Leaving O’level off CAPS: the notice requires the upload before screening.
- Registering while awaiting results: MOUAU told candidates to wait until results were out.
- Paying anyone outside the portal: MOUAU fees go through the Remita invoice from its portal.
If you need to switch course or school after the UTME, read JAMB change of course and JAMB change of institution.
MOUAU Geology cut off mark: frequently asked questions
Is Physics compulsory for Geology in MOUAU? No. The JAMB entry lets you pick any three of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Geography, and Physics is not a required O’level credit. Having it still helps.
Do I need Biology for Geology in MOUAU? At O’level, yes: the brochure rule lists Biology with English, Chemistry and Mathematics. In the UTME it is optional.
What score is safe for Geology in MOUAU? MOUAU only publishes the 150 minimum. In my view 190 or more, with one-sitting O’level, gives you a solid chance.
Can I use Geography for Geology in JAMB? Yes. Geography is one of the five subjects you can choose from, so Chemistry, Mathematics and Geography is a valid combination.
Sources and updates
The 150 minimum, the first-choice rule, the 6 June 2026 opening, the ₦2,000 Remita fee, the portal addresses, the awaiting result instruction and the weighting of O’level grades and sittings come from MOUAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice signed by the Registrar, Dr (Mrs) Nkeiruka Charity Mbanasor, as reprinted by Myschool on 20 June 2026; I could not open the original on mouau.edu.ng. The national minimum of 150, the 31 October 2026 admission deadline and the four-week CAPS acceptance window come from reports of JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026) by the News Agency of Nigeria and News Central. The college and department names come from MOUAU’s Academic Department by Faculty page (updated 19 June 2026). The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules come from JAMB’s brochure entry for Geology as reprinted by Myschool; the entry shows no MOUAU remark. MOUAU has not published a departmental cut-off, an aggregate formula, a screening test date, acceptance fees or school fees in any source I reached, and I could not confirm accreditation. The safe target scores are my advice. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated when MOUAU releases its 2027/2028 screening notice.
