The Abia Poly cut off mark for Computer Engineering Technology is 100 in the UTME, which is JAMB’s national minimum for polytechnics for 2026/2027. Abia State Polytechnic, now called Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, has not published a separate cut-off for ND Computer Engineering. Some blogs say you need “120 and above” for the school, but no school notice backs that figure.
2027/2028 update: Abia Poly cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
A score of 100 only makes you eligible to be considered. Computer Engineering is one of the courses young people in Aba and across the South East ask about most, because it sits between electronics and IT, so the score that actually wins a place is higher. Below are the verified figures, a safe target score (my advice), the exact JAMB subject combination, O’level rules, what is known about Abia Poly’s screening, a worked example and the CAPS steps.
Abia Poly Computer Engineering Technology cut off mark at a glance
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Status |
|---|---|---|
| JAMB minimum UTME score for polytechnics | 100 | Official (JAMB 2026 policy meeting, reported by NAN on 11 May 2026) |
| Abia Poly departmental cut-off for Computer Engineering | Not published | No official figure found for 2025/2026 or 2026/2027 |
| “120 and above” figure seen on blogs | 120 | Unofficial (o3schools, 3 February 2026; no school notice cited) |
| Programme level | National Diploma (ND), full time | ND entry is through the UTME and JAMB CAPS |
| School | School of Engineering Technology | Wikipedia, citing the JAMB brochure |
| Name on JAMB’s course list | Computer Engineering | Myschool reprint of the JAMB brochure list for Abia State Polytechnic |
| UTME subjects | English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry | JAMB polytechnic brochure as reprinted by Myschool; no Abia Poly remark |
| Screening fee and dates | Not published officially | Check the polytechnic portal |
| Admission deadline set by JAMB | 31 December 2026 for polytechnics | Official (NAN, 11 May 2026) |
Computer Engineering appeared on the course list in the polytechnic’s 2025/2026 ND/HND admission advert, so the department was admitting in the last session with a published advert. JAMB’s course list for the school names it simply “Computer Engineering”; the ND is a technology diploma, which is why most people call it Computer Engineering Technology.
Abia Poly Computer Engineering cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics and monotechnics | Official |
| 2026/2027 | 120 | “Scored up to 120 and above” on a blog’s Abia Poly screening post | Unofficial |
| 2025/2026 | 100 | JAMB national minimum for polytechnics | Official (reported by Nairametrics, 8 July 2025) |
| Any year | None | Abia Poly cut-off for Computer Engineering specifically | Never published in any source I found |
JAMB kept the polytechnic minimum at 100 in both 2025 and 2026, and its 2026 policy meeting said the approved minimums must be strictly followed. A polytechnic is free to admit above that line, and engineering and design courses often fill with higher scores, but Abia Poly has never announced a figure for Computer Engineering. If a website quotes an exact Abia Poly Computer Engineering cut-off such as 140 or 150, ask it for the school notice behind the number.
Safe target score for Computer Engineering at Abia Poly (my advice)
This table is my judgement as an admissions adviser, based on how ND engineering and technology courses fill in South East polytechnics. It is not an Abia Poly rule, and the school has not published merit lists with scores.
| Your UTME score | My read for ND Computer Engineering at Abia Poly |
|---|---|
| Below 100 | Not eligible for any ND course this session |
| 100 to 119 | Eligible, but weak for an engineering or technology course |
| 120 to 139 | Possible, and above the figure blogs quote |
| 140 to 159 | Reasonable for Computer Engineering |
| 160 to 179 | Competitive. This is the range I would aim for. |
| 180 and above | Strong. You should not lose a place on score alone. |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 160, with credits in English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry from one sitting if possible. Computer Engineering attracts more applicants than most ND engineering courses, so I set the target a little above what I would suggest for Mechanical or Welding and Fabrication.
Catchment and state of origin
Abia Poly is owned by the Abia State Government, but it has not published a catchment list or a quota split for 2026/2027. It admits candidates from every state. I would not count on any indigene advantage unless the school’s own notice mentions one.
Abia Poly Computer Engineering subject combination and O’level requirements
| Requirement | ND Computer Engineering |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry |
| O’level | Five credits in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry plus any two of Biology/Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing, Basic Electronics/Basic Electricity, Auto Mechanics, Metal Work, Further Mathematics, English Language, Geography and Economics/Commerce |
| English Language | The brochure states that an O’level credit in English Language is required |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO and NABTEB are the usual ones; the 2025/2026 advert names SSCE and NECO |
| Sittings | Not stated by Abia Poly; two sittings is the common polytechnic limit |
| Abia Poly remark in the brochure | None |
| Interview, drawing test or practical | None published |
There is no choice to make in the UTME for this course. JAMB’s brochure fixes the three subjects after English as Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and it carries no special remark for Abia State Polytechnic. If you register Biology or Further Mathematics in place of Chemistry, you are outside the brochure and CAPS can reject the offer.
At O’level the core is Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and the brochure adds that a credit in English Language is required. For the remaining slots, Further Mathematics, Technical Drawing or Basic Electronics are the most useful picks for this course, because they line up with what you meet in the first semester. Biology, Geography or Economics also count if that is what you have.
The 2025/2026 advert reprint says candidates need “at least four (4) Passes” at SSCE or NECO, and then the text is cut off. That line does not match the five credits in JAMB’s brochure. Plan for five credits, with Mathematics, Physics and English Language among them. That is the national ND pattern, and it keeps every option open, including a later move to HND.
Direct Entry and the HND route
There is no Direct Entry into the first year of an ND, and JAMB’s brochure lists no Direct Entry requirement for this course. ND Computer Engineering admission goes through the UTME and CAPS. After the ND and a year of industrial attachment, you can apply for HND Computer Engineering directly to the polytechnic, outside CAPS, if the school runs the HND in that session.
For HND admission, a blog (schoolings.org, page updated 12 March 2026) reprinted a notice it credits to the polytechnic’s management: a ₦5,000 form, five O’level credits, an ND at Lower Credit or above, a one-year industrial attachment, and a screening test with no make-up date. I have not seen the original notice, so treat those details as unconfirmed. Our Abia Poly HND admission requirements page covers that route.
How Abia Poly screening works
I could not find an official 2026/2027 screening notice from Abia Poly. Its website did not load for me, and Myschool, which usually reprints polytechnic adverts, has none for this session. What follows comes from the 2025/2026 advert reprinted by Myschool and from a blog description of the 2026/2027 form, so check every detail on the portal before you pay.
| Detail | What is known | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Who can apply | Candidates who chose Abia State Polytechnic in the UTME and scored at least the minimum | JAMB rule; blog says first choice |
| Minimum UTME score | 100 (JAMB); some blogs say 120 | 100 official; 120 unofficial |
| Eligibility line in 2025/2026 advert | “At least four (4) Passes at SSCE/NECO level” (the reprint cuts off after this) | Myschool reprint, 26 July 2025 |
| Payment | Generate an invoice on the portal and pay at a bank | Blog (o3schools, 3 February 2026) |
| After payment | Complete the form, upload documents, print the acknowledgement and an exam slip | Blog; suggests a screening test |
| Fee | Not published | Unknown |
| Aggregate formula | Not published | Unknown |
The exam slip in the blog description points to a written or computer test. Abia Poly has not said what the test covers or how it weighs it against your UTME score. For an engineering or technology course, I would revise the same Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry you wrote in the UTME, plus English, because that is what polytechnic screening tests usually draw on.
Worked example for an ND Computer Engineering applicant
Abia Poly has not published an aggregate formula, so start by measuring how far your UTME score is from the 100 minimum and from a safe target. Take Emeka, who scored 168 with credits in English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Further Mathematics from one sitting.
- Eligibility: 168 minus 100 = 68. He is well above JAMB’s minimum.
- Against the blog figure: 168 minus 120 = 48. Even if Abia Poly used 120, he clears it.
- Against my safe target: 168 minus 160 = 8. He is in the competitive band, though not by much.
- O’level check: the three core sciences plus English and Further Mathematics, all credits, uploaded to CAPS. Nothing rules him out.
Many Nigerian polytechnics rank candidates by a mix of UTME score and screening score. Purely to show how such a mix works, take the UTME score divided by 8 (out of 50) plus a screening score out of 50. Emeka’s 168 gives 21 points, and a screening score of 32 out of 50 would give him 53 out of 100. A candidate with 125 and the same screening score would have about 47.6. The gap shows why a few extra UTME marks still help after you have cleared the minimum. This formula is an illustration only. Abia Poly has not published one.
Your chances of getting Computer Engineering at Abia Poly
- Computer Engineering usually draws more applicants than Mechanical or Welding and Fabrication, so expect stiffer competition than for those courses.
- A UTME score in the 150s or above, with credits in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English on CAPS, puts you in a good position.
- If your score is near 100, a place in Computer Engineering is unlikely. Be ready to accept a related engineering course if the school offers one on CAPS.
- Polytechnics usually keep admitting until JAMB’s deadline, which was 31 December 2026 for the 2026/2027 session, so keep checking CAPS after the first list.
If the school offers you Electrical/Electronic Engineering instead, I would think hard before rejecting it. The first year shares a lot with Computer Engineering (circuits, electronics, workshop practice and mathematics), and an HND in either course leads to similar jobs in electronics and ICT support.
How to apply for Computer Engineering at Abia Poly, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: text NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME correctly: pick Computer Engineering with Use of English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. JAMB still lists the school as Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, even though it was renamed Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in November 2024.
- Fix your choice if needed: if Abia Poly was not your choice, do a JAMB change of institution before screening opens. To move into this course from another one, see JAMB change of course.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do this at a JAMB accredited centre. JAMB cannot offer you admission while CAPS shows no O’level result.
- Fill the screening form: on the Abia Poly applicant portal (portal.abiastatepolytechnic.edu.ng), generate the invoice, pay, complete the form, upload your documents, and print the acknowledgement and exam slip.
- Sit the screening: go with your slip, UTME result slip and O’level results if a test is held.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept the offer. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
- Pay acceptance and clear: Abia Poly has not published its acceptance fee in any official source I reached. Pay only through an invoice generated on the school portal, then complete clearance at the school.
Warning
Admission into Abia Poly comes through JAMB CAPS. If anyone offers you a “special list” slot for money, walk away. A genuine offer appears on your CAPS page, and genuine school payments are made through a portal invoice in your name.
If you still need to sit the UTME, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and revise with our JAMB Chemistry syllabus. When results come out, see how to check your JAMB result.
Studying Computer Engineering Technology at Abia Poly
ND Computer Engineering sits in the polytechnic’s School of Engineering Technology at the Aba campus on the Aba to Owerri Road, near Enyimba International Stadium. The course trains you to build, test, install and repair computer hardware and the electronics inside it, with enough programming to work close to the hardware.
What you study
- Electrical circuit theory and basic electronics, from resistors and diodes to transistors and amplifiers
- Digital electronics: logic gates, number systems, counters and registers
- Computer hardware, assembly and maintenance of PCs and peripherals
- Programming, usually starting with a structured language and moving towards assembly language for microprocessors
- Microprocessors and microcontrollers, and how they talk to sensors and other devices
- Data communication and basic computer networking
- Technical drawing, workshop practice and engineering mathematics
- Communication in English and the general studies courses required for all ND students
Expect long practical sessions in electronics and workshop labs. Students who do well are usually comfortable with Mathematics and Physics and enjoy taking things apart to see how they work.
Duration and accreditation
Under the standard NBTE structure, the ND runs for two years full time. Students who want the HND then do a one-year industrial attachment (SIWES or IT) before applying, and the HND usually asks for an ND at Lower Credit or above. Abia Poly has not published a course-specific timetable, so treat this as the national pattern.
On accreditation, the history matters. In 2022 the NBTE withdrew Abia State Polytechnic’s accreditation, and reports said students were barred from NYSC mobilisation. The Abia State Government announced on 1 September 2022 that accreditation had been restored after it released ₦450 million and held talks with the NBTE. I could not confirm the current NBTE status of ND Computer Engineering itself, so ask the department, or check the NBTE’s list of accredited programmes, before you pay fees. Engineering technicians and technologists in Nigeria are regulated by COREN, so if you plan to practise later, check what COREN asks of ND and HND holders when you get to that stage.
Computer Engineering or Computer Science at Abia Poly?
| Point | ND Computer Engineering | ND Computer Science |
|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Hardware and electronics, with programming close to the hardware | Software, programming and information systems |
| UTME subjects after English | Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (fixed) | See the Computer Science post |
| Lab work | Electronics labs and workshops | Mostly computer labs |
| Typical first job | Hardware or network technician | Programmer, IT support or data entry |
Both courses appear on JAMB’s list for Abia State Polytechnic. Pick by what you enjoy: if soldering a circuit sounds better than writing code all day, Computer Engineering is the closer fit. Our Abia Poly Computer Science cut-off mark post has the requirements for the other option.
Careers after the ND
- Computer hardware technician in repair shops, schools, banks and offices
- Network support and installation work for ICT firms and internet providers
- Technician roles in telecoms and electronics companies
- Self-employment in computer and phone repairs, CCTV and solar inverter installation
- HND Computer Engineering, and later a top-up degree route if you want a B.Eng or B.Tech

Mistakes that cost Computer Engineering applicants a place at Abia Poly
- Treating 100 as a safe score: it is the minimum to apply, and Computer Engineering fills with higher scores.
- Registering Biology instead of Chemistry: the brochure fixes Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry for this course.
- No credit in English or Mathematics: the brochure asks for a credit in both.
- O’level missing on CAPS: JAMB cannot process your admission without it.
- Searching for the new name only: JAMB and CAPS still show Abia State Polytechnic.
- Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: acceptance fee payment and clearance at the school are separate steps.
Abia Poly Computer Engineering cut-off: frequently asked questions
Is 140 enough for Computer Engineering in Abia Poly? It is enough to apply, since JAMB’s minimum for polytechnics is 100, and it beats the 120 that blogs quote. For a comfortable chance in Computer Engineering I would still aim for 160 or more.
Can I study Computer Engineering at Abia Poly without Chemistry? Not by the brochure. JAMB lists Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as the UTME subjects after English, and Abia State Polytechnic has no waiver remark allowing a substitute.
Is Computer Engineering at Abia Poly accredited by NBTE? I could not confirm the current NBTE status of this specific course. The school’s accreditation was withdrawn in 2022 and later restored, so ask the department or check the NBTE list before paying fees.
Does Abia Poly offer HND Computer Engineering? The polytechnic runs HND programmes in its engineering school, and its 2025/2026 advert covered ND and HND. Confirm that HND Computer Engineering is admitting in your session before you plan around it.
Sources and updates
The 100 minimum for polytechnics and the 31 December 2026 admission deadline come from the News Agency of Nigeria report of JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026). The 2025 figure of 100 is from Nairametrics (8 July 2025) and matching Blueprint and AllAfrica reports. The UTME and O’level requirements are from JAMB’s polytechnic brochure as reprinted by Myschool (ND Computer Engineering brochure page), which has no Abia Poly remark. The course list is from the Myschool list of Abia State Polytechnic courses and Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic’s 2025/2026 ND/HND admission advert reprinted by Myschool (26 July 2025). The “120 and above” figure and the screening form steps are from o3schools (3 February 2026) and are unofficial. The HND details are from a schoolings.org reprint (12 March 2026) that I could not match to an original notice. The renaming to Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic on 7 November 2024 and the school’s location are from Wikipedia and news reports of the renaming. The 2022 accreditation withdrawal and restoration are from news reports and the Abia State Government (1 September 2022). Course content and careers describe the standard NBTE ND, not an Abia Poly handbook. The safe target scores and the worked example are my own advice. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated when Abia Poly publishes its 2027/2028 notice.
