UNTH School of Nursing Admission Requirements 2027/2028: Entrance Exam and Form

UNTH School of Nursing asks for five O’level credits, an entrance exam and an interview for its three-year General Nursing programme. See the calendar, the JAMB question, NMCN status and why the 2027/2028 intake is unconfirmed.

UNTH School of Nursing admission requirements, as the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, publishes them, are five O’level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, from WAEC and/or NECO at no more than two sittings, followed by an entrance exam and an interview. The school’s pages describe a three-year General Nursing programme that admits about 60 students a year, with forms from December to January, the exam around April, the interview in June and lectures from October. No cut-off mark has ever been published for it.

2027/2028 update: UNTH School of Nursing admission requirements and entrance exam process usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the rules on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official information (UNTH’s school pages and the 2026/2027 notices of its College of Nursing Sciences). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

I could not find any official UNTH advert for a fresh General Nursing intake for 2025/2026 or 2026/2027. Since 2024, UNTH’s nursing training has been reorganised under a new College of Nursing Sciences (CONSUNTH), which has matriculated ND/HND and BNSc students and sold BNSc forms through JAMB. The old three-year certificate route may have been replaced. This guide sets out what is confirmed, what is not, how to cover both routes, and how to avoid fake form sellers.

Is UNTH School of Nursing still admitting for General Nursing?

Nobody outside the school can confirm it right now. UNTH’s own website gives this timeline:

DateWhat UNTH publishedWhat it tells you
January to July 2020School of Nursing page: three-year General Nursing, five credits, about 60 a yearThe certificate programme was running
July 2024UNTH Schools page last updated; still lists General Nursing with the same calendarThe page was not rewritten when the college was formed
October 2024Post-basic schools reported as part of the College of Nursing Sciences, UNTHThe schools now sit under one college
3 May 2025First CONSUNTH matriculation: ND/HND and BNSc students (2024/2025)Diploma and degree nursing had started
9 April 20262025/2026 matriculation report mentions BNSc students onlyNo sign of a General Nursing set in that report
19 June 2026BNSc Post-UTME notice: 180 UTME minimum, form on nursing.unth.edu.ngThe degree admits through JAMB

Across Nigeria, many hospital schools of nursing have been turned into colleges of nursing sciences that award the ND and HND in Nursing and admit through JAMB. Enugu State did the same with its own school, which became the Enugu State College of Nursing Sciences. UNTH’s 2025 matriculation of ND/HND students fits that pattern. Until the college publishes a General Nursing advert, I would treat the three-year certificate as uncertain and plan for the JAMB routes as well.

Does UNTH School of Nursing require JAMB? Cut-off figures

The General Nursing pages do not mention JAMB. The college’s other nursing routes do, and JAMB now sets a separate minimum for colleges of nursing.

The 150 applies only if the school admits through JAMB. My safe target, as consultant advice: score 180 or more in the 2027 UTME. That clears the college of nursing minimum with room to spare and also qualifies you for the BNSc form, so a single score covers every nursing door at UNTH.

O’level and UTME subjects for nursing at UNTH

RequirementDetail
O’level subjectsEnglish Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, all at credit
Exams acceptedWAEC and/or NECO (NABTEB not mentioned)
SittingsOne or two
UTME subjects (if JAMB is used)Use of English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics. This is the combination UNTH’s own 2026/2027 BNSc notice lists
Age, awaiting result, sexNot stated on the school pages

Physics is the subject that catches people out. It is on the O’level list, and it is one of the four UTME subjects for the degree. If your Physics is a pass grade, fix it now with another WAEC or NECO sitting rather than hoping the school will overlook it.

How the UNTH School of Nursing entrance exam and interview work

UNTH has published the yearly calendar but not the exam format, the subjects or the pass mark. This is the cycle from the school pages:

StageUsual monthWhat to do
Sale of formsDecember to JanuaryApply on the school’s portal (the website links to schools.unthportal.org/son/)
Entrance examAround AprilRevise English and the three sciences at SSCE level
InterviewJuneBring original certificates and be ready to explain why you chose nursing
ResumptionOctoberPay fees and complete medical screening as directed

With roughly 60 places a year, and many more applicants in a state like Enugu, both the exam and the interview are competitive. Expect a written paper covering English and the sciences, then a panel that checks your documents, communication and attitude to patient care.

Worked example (illustrative)

  1. Candidate: Chiamaka has B3 English, C4 Mathematics, B2 Biology, C5 Chemistry and C6 Physics, from WAEC and NECO combined.
  2. O’level check: five credits in the right subjects at two sittings. She meets the UNTH General Nursing requirement.
  3. UTME: she scores 192 in 2027 with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. That is 42 above JAMB’s 2026 college of nursing minimum and 12 above the 2026 BNSc floor.
  4. Result: if the General Nursing form comes out, she applies. If UNTH only advertises the BNSc or ND route, she is still eligible to apply. Her weak point is Physics, so that is where her revision time goes.

How to apply to UNTH School of Nursing, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the 2027 UTME: choose Nursing with Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Check the JAMB e-brochure for how UNTH’s College of Nursing Sciences is listed and make it your first choice if UNTH is where you want to be.
  3. Upload your O’level to CAPS: at an accredited CBT centre, have every WAEC or NECO result you plan to use added to your JAMB record, then confirm the grades on CAPS.
  4. Watch the official channels from November: UNTH’s news page (unth.edu.ng), the school site (nursing.unth.edu.ng) and its portal. A General Nursing form, if it returns, would follow the December to January window.
  5. Write the exam and attend the interview: take your printed slip and original certificates, and keep copies of every payment receipt.
  6. Accept on CAPS if JAMB is used: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, open Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.
  7. Pay acceptance and clear: UNTH has not published an acceptance fee for any nursing route. Pay only through the channel named in your official admission letter.

If you already registered with another school as first choice and want UNTH, read our guide to the JAMB change of institution before the admission window closes.

Warning

Blog and forum posts announcing a “UNTH School of Nursing form” with a private phone number to call are not from UNTH. The college’s own 2026 notice told applicants to avoid agents and process everything at the Department of Nursing. Never pay a personal account for a form, a slot or an admission list.

About the UNTH School of Nursing

The school began as a Specialist Hospital School of Nursing and was approved in January 1971 to train general nurses with the University of Nigeria. A Nursing Council of Nigeria inspection team gave final approval in March 1972, and on 1 April 1973 it became the School of Nursing, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital. Its first principal was the late Mrs I. C. Amobi. The school website now names Mrs C. C. Ndubuka as principal and gives the postal address as P.M.B. 01129, Enugu.

Accreditation: what the NMCN list shows

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) published an updated list of approved schools in December 2025. UNTH’s lines read:

UNTH programmeNMCN status (date as printed)
NursingFull, January 2020
MidwiferyFull, January 2021
Post Basic Anaesthetic NursingProvisional, June 2021
Post Basic Cardiothoracic NursingFull, February 2021
Post Basic Peri-Operative NursingFull, December 2018
Post Basic Ophthalmic NursingFull, February 2021

The NMCN legend says full approval lasts five years, so a January 2020 date is past that window on paper. The earlier August 2022 list gave the school a quota of 75 students a year. Ask the school for its current approval letter before you accept any offer.

What General Nursing students learn

  • Anatomy, physiology and the basic sciences behind patient care.
  • Fundamentals of nursing, the nursing process and bedside skills.
  • Medical, surgical, paediatric and maternal nursing, with ward postings in a large teaching hospital.
  • Community health and pharmacology, ending with the NMCN qualifying examination for registration as a nurse.

Once registered, nurses can specialise through post-basic courses. UNTH itself runs midwifery, anaesthesia, perioperative, ophthalmic and cardiothoracic programmes for registered nurses.

Mistakes UNTH nursing applicants make

  • Skipping the UTME: the BNSc needed at least 180 in 2026, and any diploma intake through JAMB needs at least the college of nursing minimum. Without a UTME score, you are left waiting on a certificate form that may not come.
  • Paying a “form agent”: UNTH sells forms through its own portals and receipts.
  • Dropping Physics: it is required at O’level and in the UTME combination.
  • Applying for a post-basic course as a school leaver: midwifery, anaesthesia, perioperative, ophthalmic and cardiothoracic nursing at UNTH are for registered nurses only.
  • Relying on old blog dates: a 2024 article about the December form does not prove a 2027 intake.

For revision, the JAMB Biology syllabus and JAMB Chemistry syllabus list the topics, and our guide to JAMB 2027 registration dates tells you when to register.

UNTH School of Nursing: frequently asked questions

Is UNTH School of Nursing form out for 2027/2028? Not as of 29 October 2026. No official General Nursing advert had appeared for 2025/2026, 2026/2027 or 2027/2028; the last cycle UNTH advertised for school leavers was the BNSc Post-UTME in June 2026.

Does UNTH School of Nursing accept JAMB? The General Nursing pages do not mention JAMB, but the college’s BNSc admits through JAMB with a 180 minimum. Write the UTME with English, Biology, Chemistry and Physics so you qualify either way.

How many students does UNTH School of Nursing admit? About 60 a year, according to UNTH’s schools page. The NMCN list of August 2022 gave it a quota of 75.

What is the price of UNTH School of Nursing form? UNTH has never published a General Nursing form fee on its website. For comparison, the 2026/2027 BNSc Post-UTME form was ₦20,000 plus a ₦2,000 confirmation fee.

Sources and updates

The three-year programme, intake of about 60, December to January forms, April exam, June interview and October start come from the UNTH Schools page (last updated 30 July 2024). The five O’level credits, the school’s history and approval dates come from UNTH’s School of Nursing page (2020), and the current principal, address and portal link from the school website, nursing.unth.edu.ng. The ND/HND and BNSc matriculation of 3 May 2025 and the 2025/2026 ceremony of 9 April 2026 come from UNTH news reports. The 180 BNSc minimum, the ₦20,000 form and the anti-agent warning come from the official notice CONSUNTH announces sale of Post-UTME forms for 2026/2027 BNSc programme (19 June 2026). NMCN statuses are from the council’s list of approved schools (December 2025), and the quota of 75 from its August 2022 list. The 150 minimum for colleges of nursing is from JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026), as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria. The 180 safe target and the worked example are my advice and illustration. Checked on 29 October 2026; this page will be updated when UNTH publishes a 2027/2028 nursing notice.
