The Cornell Johnson MBA is the Two-Year MBA of Cornell University’s SC Johnson Graduate School of Management, taught in Ithaca, New York, and ranked No. 15 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools list. For fall 2027 entry, the Cornell Johnson MBA Round 2 deadline is 5 January 2027 and Round 3 closes on 6 April 2027. You will complete a goals statement, choose between an “Impact” essay and a “Table of Contents” essay, send one or two recommendations and a test score (or request a waiver), and, unless you are exempt, meet one of the higher English minimums among top US business schools.
Johnson admitted 29.3% of applicants for fall 2025 entry, according to U.S. News data reported by Poets&Quants. Its Class of 2027 is 42% international, with a median GMAT of 710. The 2026-27 budget is $127,278, merit scholarships are automatic, international students can borrow without a cosigner through a credit union partner, and a STEM-certified Management Science path gives eligible graduates up to 36 months of US work on OPT. I checked the figures in this Cornell Johnson guide on 29 October 2026.
Cornell Johnson MBA ranking
U.S. News released its 2026 Best Business Schools ranking, part of its 2026 Best Graduate Schools, on 7 April 2026. Johnson placed No. 15 for the full-time MBA, just behind Michigan Ross (No. 13) and Duke Fuqua (No. 14). Poets&Quants (6 April 2026) and Clear Admit (9 April 2026) published the same tables.
Cornell Johnson acceptance rate and class profile
Poets&Quants puts the Cornell Johnson acceptance rate at 29.3% for the class that entered in fall 2025, from 2,972 applications, close to the 28.1% and 29.9% of the two years before. The latest full profile I could confirm is for that class, the Class of 2027, as reported by Clear Admit; Johnson had not published a Class of 2028 profile on the pages I could read.
| Two-Year MBA Class of 2027 | Figure |
|---|---|
| New students | 276 |
| Median GMAT | 710 |
| Median undergraduate GPA | 3.4 |
| Average work experience | 5.3 years |
| International students | 42% |
| Countries represented | 34 |
| Women | 38% |
| Average age | 29 |
| Veterans and active service members | 14% |
Johnson’s application guide adds that the middle 80% of applicants score between 660 and 740 on the GMAT. Johnson did not report a GMAT Focus average or GRE scores for this class.
Cornell Johnson MBA requirements for international students
According to Johnson’s MBA application requirements and FAQs page, the Two-Year MBA needs:
- Bachelor’s degree: required before enrolment. Full-time work experience is not required, though students average about five years.
- Transcripts: unofficial copies to apply, showing all coursework. Report grades exactly as your university gives them; do not convert them to a 4.0 GPA. Non-English records need a certified translation, and Johnson recommends WES.
- Resume: outlining your professional accomplishments.
- Test score or waiver: GMAT (including the 10th Edition), GRE or Executive Assessment, no minimum.
- Essays: a goals statement, one of two essays, and an optional essay.
- Recommendations: one required, up to two allowed, on the GMAC Common Letter of Recommendation.
- English test: unless you are exempt.
- Application fee: $250, non-refundable.
- Interview: by invitation, sent with the initial notification for each round.
Fee waivers cover US military members and veterans, Forté MBALaunch participants, Peace Corps volunteers, Teach for America alumni and current Cornell students. Johnson does not list a waiver by country, so most African applicants will pay the full $250. Request any waiver by email at least three business days before the deadline.
Test scores and the test waiver
Scores are valid for five years from submission, and Johnson uses your highest total. The GMAT code is 5JW-BM-96 and the GRE code is 8296. You can ask for a waiver if you meet at least one of these: a STEM, business or quantitative degree with a 3.0 GPA or second-class upper honours (or an international equivalent); a CPA or CFA qualification or equivalent; or full-time analytical or quantitative work shown on your resume. A waiver request needs a 100-word statement and gets a reply in five to seven business days. One catch: waiver applicants are still considered for merit scholarships, but the Sage Scholarship requires a test score.
English language requirement
If you are not a native English speaker and did not earn a degree in an English-speaking country, you need one of these, taken within the last two years:
| Test | Johnson Two-Year MBA minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 100 overall, with at least 25 in each section |
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 overall, with at least 7.0 in speaking and writing |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 overall |
| TOEFL MyBest or TOEFL Essentials | Not accepted |
The exemptions are unusually specific. You are exempt if you are a citizen of the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ghana or Canada, or hold a degree from one of those countries. Citizens of India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Singapore are named as not exempt by citizenship. You are also exempt with a degree from any other country if you document that English was the sole language of instruction. So a Ghanaian applicant is exempt by citizenship, while a Nigerian or Kenyan applicant needs an official letter from the university confirming English-only instruction, or a test score. Johnson says residency and work experience do not count and that exception requests are rarely approved. You may submit a TOEFL with one or more sections at 25 or lower, but if admitted you may have to complete Johnson’s EISS summer English programme.
Cornell Johnson MBA deadlines 2026-2027
Round 1 closed on 17 September 2026. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time; deposit deadlines fall at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
| Round | Application deadline | Initial notification (interview invitations) | Final notification | Deposit and documents due |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round 2 | 5 January 2027 | 3 March 2027 | 26 March 2027 | 30 April 2027 |
| Round 3 | 6 April 2027 | 7 May 2027 | 21 May 2027 | 4 June 2027 |
Admitted students pay a non-refundable $1,500 deposit by the round’s deadline and a second $1,500 deposit by 4 June 2027. Johnson says it does not grant deposit extensions.
Round 3 is risky for visas
A Round 3 final decision on 21 May 2027 leaves about ten weeks before the programme starts in early August, which is little time for an I-20, the SEVIS fee and a visa interview. Johnson also says applying earlier gets priority for merit scholarships. International applicants should treat 5 January 2027 as the deadline.
Cornell Johnson essays and how to answer them
| Essay | What it asks | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Goals statement (required) | Complete two sentences naming the role, company and industry you want right after the MBA and 5 to 10 years later, then answer a short question on how your qualities and Johnson’s resources will get you to the first goal | No word limit stated |
| Essay 1: Impact (choose one) | How you intend to make a meaningful impact on the Johnson community | 350 words |
| Essay 2: Table of Contents (choose one) | A table of contents for the story of your life | 350 words, or a multimedia file under 3 minutes and 25 MB |
| Optional essay | Clarify anything in your application; required for reapplicants | 350 words |
The goals statement
Be precise: a named role, a named company or type of company, and an industry for each goal. The short follow-up answer should link one or two of your strengths to one or two Johnson resources, such as an immersion course or a club tied to your target industry. If you are invited to interview, Johnson says you may be asked to expand on these goals, so keep them consistent with what you will say out loud.
Sample sentence, for illustration: “Immediately after my MBA, I will be an investment banking associate in the power and utilities group at a firm such as Citi, advising on renewable energy deals.”
Impact or Table of Contents?
Choose the Impact essay if you have a clear record of building things in your communities and can map that onto specific Johnson clubs or roles. Choose Table of Contents if your life story has distinct chapters that explain who you are: a move between countries, a change of career, a family business. Chapter titles should be specific and a little personal, with one or two lines under each. The multimedia option suits you only if you can make it look clean; a messy video hurts more than plain text.
Sample chapter titles, for illustration: “Chapter 1: Learning to count change at my mother’s provision shop in Ibadan. Chapter 2: The physics teacher who made me retake every test I passed.”
Cornell Johnson interview format
Johnson sends interview invitations with the initial notification for each round, along with waitlist-without-interview and denial decisions. Final decisions follow the interviews on a rolling basis. The pages I read did not describe the length or say whether interviews are in person in Ithaca or virtual, so check your invitation. Prepare to explain your goals in more detail than the goals statement, as Johnson says it may ask, plus standard questions on teamwork, leadership and why Cornell.
What the Johnson admissions committee looks for
- Precise, realistic goals, since the goals statement asks for a named role, company and industry.
- Analytical readiness, through a test score or a strong quantitative degree or job.
- Leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skill, which are what Johnson asks recommenders to describe.
- Contribution to a small, close community in Ithaca.
- Strong English, given its high test minimums.
Cornell Johnson tuition and cost of attendance
Johnson’s official tuition and financing page gives one budget for the 2026-27 year of the Two-Year MBA:
| Item (2026-27) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $88,934 |
| First-year fee (non-refundable, first semester only) | $1,500 |
| Student activity fee | $100 |
| Health fee | $600 |
| Housing | $19,962 |
| Meals | $5,768 |
| Books and supplies | $2,464 |
| Transportation | $3,754 |
| Miscellaneous | $4,196 |
| Total | $127,278 |
The budget shows a $600 health fee and no separate health insurance line, so ask whether student health insurance is billed on top. Ithaca is cheaper to live in than New York City, but the housing line of almost $20,000 is not small.
Cornell Johnson scholarships for international students
Johnson’s merit scholarships are awarded automatically at admission, with no separate application, and earlier applicants get priority. The tuition page does not list award names or amounts, and it does not say which awards are open to international students. Two named awards appear in the application guide:
- Park Leadership Fellows: open only to US citizens and permanent residents in the Two-Year MBA, selected through an extra 500-word essay and a Leadership Exploration and Assessment Day after the interview.
- Sage Scholarship: requires a GMAT, GRE or EA score, so do not take a waiver if you want to be considered.
For outside funding, see our list of scholarships for African students and our guide to American scholarships for international students.
Loans without a US cosigner
Johnson offers Two-Year MBA students a no-cosigner loan through Quorum Federal Credit Union. International students can borrow up to tuition plus $10,000 for other costs, whether they have no US credit history or good US credit. The details and application link are emailed to admitted international students. The page does not mention Prodigy Finance or MPOWER.
Is the Cornell Johnson MBA STEM designated?
Yes, through the Management Science path. Cornell’s course catalogue lists a Two-Year Residential Management Science MBA (STEM certified), a path within the Two-Year MBA with an emphasis on data analytics and technology. Johnson announced the designation in April 2020. The catalogue says F-1 students in the programme qualify for the STEM OPT extension and may work in their field in the US for up to 36 months in total. Ask admissions how and when you enter the Management Science path so your course choices count.
Cornell Johnson MBA salary and employment
These are the Class of 2025 results, as summarised by Clear Admit from Johnson’s employment report (January 2026). Of 285 Two-Year graduates, 239 were seeking jobs.
| Class of 2025 outcome | Figure |
|---|---|
| Had an offer within 3 months | 85% |
| Accepted an offer within 3 months | 83% |
| Median base salary | $175,000 |
| Mean base salary | $158,426 |
| Mean signing bonus | $39,795 |
| Financial services | 41% (average base $166,253) |
| Consulting | 28% (average base $171,625) |
| Technology and telecoms | 11% (average base $129,592) |
| Consumer packaged goods | 5% (average base $126,000) |
| Health care and pharma | 4% (average base $135,400) |
| Manufacturing | 4% (average base $132,125) |
The median base has held at $175,000 for three years running. Top employers included Amazon, McKinsey, Citi, EY, Microsoft and Morgan Stanley. About 95% of graduates stayed in the US, and 4% took jobs in Asia and the Middle East and North Africa. With 41% going into financial services, Johnson is a strong choice for banking despite its distance from Wall Street. Johnson does not publish a separate offer rate for international graduates.
Costs not covered by the budget
- The $250 application fee, test fees and score reports.
- A TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo test if you are not exempt.
- Translation and WES evaluation of transcripts.
- The SEVIS I-901 fee and the US visa fee.
- Winter clothing for Ithaca, flights and a rental deposit.
- Trips to New York City for recruiting, and any summer English programme Johnson asks you to take.
- The second year, which the published budget does not show separately.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Assuming an English-taught degree exempts you without paperwork. Outside the listed countries, you must document English as the sole language of instruction.
- Ignoring section scores. Johnson accepts a TOEFL with a section at 25 or lower, but admitted students with weak sections may have to attend its EISS summer English programme before classes.
- Converting a second-class upper or a 5-point CGPA to a 4.0 GPA yourself. Johnson asks for grades as your university reports them.
- Writing vague goals. The goals statement wants a named role, company and industry.
- Taking a test waiver and losing a shot at the Sage Scholarship.
- Missing a deposit deadline; Johnson does not extend them.
Who should apply to Cornell Johnson
Johnson suits you if you want finance or consulting, value an Ivy League degree and a small class, and like the idea of a quiet college town with New York City within reach for recruiting. Its no-cosigner loan and STEM path help if you are self-funding and hope to work in the US. It is a weaker fit if you want to be in a big city every day, if your English scores fall short of its high minimums, or if a technology career on the West Coast is your main goal.
