Michigan Ross MBA 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GMAT, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines

Michigan Ross MBA 2027 for International Students: Ranking, GMAT, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadlines
Michigan Ross admitted about 30% of MBA applicants for fall 2025, gave merit scholarships to over three in four of its newest class and offers a STEM track. Here are the essays, test options, the $115,939 non-resident budget and the 4 January 2027 deadline.

The Michigan Ross MBA is the two-year, full-time MBA of the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business in Ann Arbor, ranked No. 13 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools list. For fall 2027 entry, the Michigan Ross MBA Round 2 deadline is 4 January 2027 and Round 3 closes on 29 March 2027. You will write a 300-word career essay and a 200-word “Impact and Growth” essay, send a GMAT Focus, GRE or Executive Assessment score (or a quantitative readiness statement instead), and prove English proficiency if your degree was not taught entirely in English.

Ross admitted 30.2% of applicants for fall 2025 entry, according to U.S. News data reported by Poets&Quants, which makes it one of the more reachable schools in the top 15. Its newest class, the Class of 2028, has an average GMAT Focus score of 687 and is 31% international, down sharply from 40% a year earlier. The 2026-27 first-year budget for a non-resident is $115,939, more than three in four of the new class received a merit scholarship, and Ross offers a STEM-designated track. I checked the figures in this Michigan Ross guide on 29 October 2026.

Michigan Ross MBA ranking

U.S. News released its 2026 Best Business Schools ranking, part of its 2026 Best Graduate Schools, on 7 April 2026. Ross placed No. 13 for the full-time MBA, one place above Duke Fuqua and two above Cornell Johnson. Poets&Quants (6 April 2026) and Clear Admit (9 April 2026) published the same tables. Two public schools ranked higher: Berkeley Haas (No. 10) and Virginia Darden (No. 11, tie).

Michigan Ross acceptance rate and class profile

Poets&Quants puts the Michigan Ross acceptance rate at 30.2% for the class that entered in fall 2025, up from 28.9% a year earlier. Ross has not released an acceptance rate for the Class of 2028, which started in fall 2026. Here are both recent classes side by side.

The Class of 2027 figures come from the Ross class profile page; the Class of 2028 figures come from Poets&Quants’ October 2026 report on the new class. Ross told Poets&Quants the drop in international students came from fewer international applications and fewer admitted international candidates choosing to enrol. For you, that cuts both ways: fewer international applicants means less competition from your own pool, but it also signals how hard the US visa and job climate has become.

Michigan Ross MBA requirements for international students

The official Ross full-time MBA admissions pages list these components:

  1. Bachelor’s degree: the equivalent of a US bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by the time you apply.
  2. Transcripts: unofficial copies of all degrees to apply. If admitted, Ross asks for official documents authenticated through World Education Services (WES), and non-English records need a certified literal translation.
  3. Test score or SQAR: GMAT Focus, GRE or Executive Assessment. If you do not submit a score, you can send a Statement of Quantitative Academic Readiness (SQAR) about your quantitative background.
  4. One-page resume.
  5. Essays: Career Aspirations, Impact and Growth, and an optional essay.
  6. Recommendation: Ross has asked for one, on the GMAC Common Recommendation form, ideally from a current or former supervisor.
  7. Interview: by invitation, with a current Ross student or an alum.
  8. Application fee: $200 on the most recent fee page I could load, with a waiver for citizens of countries on the UN least-developed countries list.
  9. English test: if English is not your native language and your degree was not taught only in English.

The fee waiver matters for many African applicants. Countries such as Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Senegal and Mozambique are on the UN list; Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya are not. Confirm the fee, the recommendation rule and the waiver list inside the 2026-27 application, because the requirements page I could load showed an older cycle.

English language requirement

Ross accepts the TOEFL iBT, IELTS and PTE, and scores must be valid when you apply. You are exempt if you earned an accredited undergraduate degree where English was the sole language of instruction, which covers most Nigerian, Ghanaian and Kenyan university degrees; ask your registrar for a letter confirming this. The TOEFL code is 1839. For IELTS or PTE, choose “University of Michigan-Ann Arbor” as the recipient. The Ross pages I read did not state a minimum score.

Michigan Ross MBA deadlines 2026-2027

Ross announced these dates on its admissions blog in June 2026. Round 1 closed on 8 September 2026.

RoundApplication deadline
Round 2Monday, 4 January 2027
Round 3Monday, 29 March 2027

Ross has historically sent interview invitations a few weeks after each deadline. It strongly encourages international applicants to apply in Round 1 or Round 2 so there is time for the visa process.

Treat 4 January 2027 as your deadline

Round 3 on 29 March 2027 leaves very little time for an I-20, the SEVIS fee and a US visa interview before classes begin in late summer. Ross itself advises international applicants to use Round 1 or 2.

Michigan Ross MBA essays and how to answer them

EssayWhat it asksLimit
Part 1: Career Aspirations (required)Your short-term career goal, and how you will use the Ross MBA and its offerings to reach your first role after graduation300 words
Part 2: Impact and Growth (required, choose one)(a) A time something important did not go as planned, and what you did next; (b) a project of more than six months that ended well, and what kept you committed; (c) a specific time your actions had a positive impact on your community or an individual200 words
Optional essayContext for outliers, such as an employment gap, academic record, choice of recommender or extra coursework; bullet points allowed250 words

Part 1: Career Aspirations

Ross says to answer both parts specifically, so treat it as two questions. Spend about 100 words on the goal: job title, industry, type of employer and why it follows from your experience. Spend the rest on Ross: name courses, clubs or programmes that fill a skills gap. Ross teaches through action-based learning, including its MAP (Multidisciplinary Action Project) course, where teams work on a real company problem. If you have a gap in practical strategy or operations work, explain how a MAP-style project would close it.

Sample opening, for illustration: “After Ross, I plan to join the operations practice of a strategy consulting firm such as McKinsey or BCG, working on manufacturing and supply chain projects like the cement plant turnaround I led in Ogun State.”

Part 2: Impact and Growth

Two hundred words means one story, told tightly. Pick the prompt that suits your strongest example, state which prompt you chose at the top as Ross asks, and spend most of the words on your actions and what changed. The setback prompt works well if you can show a real decision after the failure. The community prompt works if the impact is concrete: number of people, money raised, a policy changed.

Sample opening, for illustration: “Prompt: a time something important did not go as planned. Three weeks before launch, our mobile-money pilot in Kumasi failed its central bank compliance review.”

The optional essay

Ross allows bullet points here, which makes it a good place to explain your grading scale, a gap year during an ASUU strike, or why your recommender is not your current boss. Keep it to facts.

Michigan Ross interview format

Interviews are by invitation only and are conducted by a current Ross student or an alum. Ross says the interview looks at how you present your experience and achievements and how you work with others. The pages I read did not give the length or say whether interviews are virtual or in person, so check your invitation. Prepare stories on teamwork, leadership, failure and why Ross, and be ready to talk about your goals in more depth than the 300-word essay allowed.

What the Ross admissions committee looks for

  • A short-term goal tied to the specific Ross resources you name.
  • Readiness for the quantitative core, shown through a test score or, if you skip the test, a convincing SQAR.
  • Teamwork. Ross teaches through group projects, and the interview tests how you work with others.
  • Follow-through on long projects and recovery from setbacks, which is what the Impact and Growth prompts probe.
  • Positive impact on a community or individual.

Michigan Ross tuition and cost of attendance

The University of Michigan is a public university, so Michigan residents pay less. International students pay the non-resident rate. The official Ross financial aid budget for 2026-27 is:

Item (2026-27, year 1)Non-resident
Tuition ($41,793 a semester)$83,586
Registration fees$493
Food and housing$22,276
Books and supplies$2,000
Personal costs, including health insurance$7,360
Federal loan fees$224
Total$115,939

Ross says the budget includes a $500 International Student Service fee for each fall and winter term, and international students must carry the university’s international health insurance. The page also shows a yearly non-resident tuition of $83,946 in one place, which does not match the semester rate or the total; I have used the figures that add up and would confirm with Ross financial aid. Ross is about $25,000 cheaper per year than NYU Stern, and Ann Arbor rents are far lower than New York’s.

Michigan Ross scholarships for international students

Ross merit scholarships are automatic: you are considered when you apply, with no separate form. The Ross admissions blog (March 2026) says awards can be significant and may renew for the second year, and that leadership and professional background often weigh in the decision. Poets&Quants reported that more than 75% of the Class of 2028 received a merit scholarship, which is a high share for a top-15 school.

Ross also has scholarships that need an application, listed for admitted students on its iMpact portal, but the public pages I read do not name them or say which are open to international students. The Consortium route is limited to its eligible members, who apply through the Consortium instead of the Ross application. For outside funding, see our list of scholarships for African students.

Loans without a US cosigner

The Ross financing pages I read discuss federal loans (for US citizens and permanent residents) and private loans in general terms. They do not name a no-cosigner lender for international students, and they do not mention Prodigy Finance or MPOWER. Ask Ross financial aid before you count on a loan to cover your I-20 proof of funds.

Is the Michigan Ross MBA STEM designated?

Through a track. In fall 2020 Ross launched a STEM-designated track open to all full-time MBA students, so the designation depends on the electives you take. According to Clear Admit’s report at the launch, you complete 18 credit hours of approved electives in areas such as big data, marketing analytics and fintech. Graduates of the track can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. If US work after the MBA is part of your plan, choose your electives with the track in mind from your first semester, and confirm the current course list with Ross.

Michigan Ross MBA salary and employment

These are the Class of 2025 results, as summarised by Clear Admit from the Ross employment report (December 2025). Of 366 graduates, 280 were seeking jobs.

Class of 2025 outcomeFigure
Had a job offer within 3 months86%
Had a job offer within 6 months92%
Median base salary$170,000
Received a signing bonus91% (median $30,000)
Consulting33.5% (median base $190,000)
Financial services19.5% (median base $175,000)
Technology13.1% (median base $143,000)
Health care10.2% (median base $138,500)
Consumer packaged goods8.9% (median base $125,000)

The top hirers were BCG, McKinsey, Amazon, Deloitte and Bain. About 81% of accepted offers came through school-facilitated channels. Only 3% of graduates took jobs outside the US, at a median base of $120,000. Ross does not publish a separate offer rate for international graduates.

Costs not covered by the budget

  • The application fee if you do not qualify for a waiver, plus test and score report fees.
  • WES authentication of your transcripts after admission.
  • The SEVIS I-901 fee and the US visa fee.
  • Flights, winter clothing (Ann Arbor winters are cold and snowy) and a rental deposit.
  • Travel for recruiting events in New York, Chicago or Seattle.
  • Summer costs if your internship is in an expensive city.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Writing a general “why MBA” essay instead of answering both parts of the career prompt.
  • Forgetting to name the chosen prompt at the top of the Impact and Growth essay.
  • Skipping the test and sending a thin SQAR. If your degree had little maths, a good GMAT Focus or GRE score is the safer proof.
  • Assuming the STEM OPT extension comes with the degree. At Ross it depends on completing the STEM track.
  • Missing the fee waiver if you are from a UN least-developed country.
  • Leaving the application to Round 3.

Who should apply to Michigan Ross

Ross suits you if you want consulting, product or general management, health care or manufacturing roles, and if you learn best by doing real projects. A strong merit scholarship record and a lower budget than the New York schools also help if cost is your main worry. Ross is less suited to you if you want to be in a big city during the MBA, or if you need STEM OPT but would rather not plan your electives around a track.
