The Carnegie Mellon Tepper MBA is a 21-month, STEM-designated full-time MBA in Pittsburgh, ranked No. 16 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools list. For fall 2027 entry, international applicants have two rounds left: Round 2 closes on 8 January 2027 and Round 3, the last round open to international candidates, closes on 3 March 2027. You need one test score (GMAT, GMAT Focus, GRE or Executive Assessment) or an approved waiver, one written essay of up to 500 words, a two-minute video essay, one recommendation and a $200 fee.
The entering class is small (144 students in the Class of 2027) and 38% of it holds a non-US passport, including students from Nigeria, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Eswatini and Mauritius. About one in four applicants gets in. Tuition for 2026-27 is $84,186 a year, and the school’s full budget for a single student comes to $120,798 a year. I checked every figure in this Tepper MBA guide against Carnegie Mellon’s own pages on 29 October 2026.
Tepper MBA ranking
U.S. News released its 2026 Best Business Schools ranking, part of the 2026 Best Graduate Schools, on 7 April 2026. Tepper placed No. 16 among full-time MBA programs, tied with Vanderbilt Owen, according to the published tables reported by Poets&Quants and Clear Admit. That puts it just behind Cornell Johnson (No. 15) and just ahead of UCLA Anderson and Texas McCombs (both No. 18).
Tepper’s reputation rests on quantitative work: operations, analytics, finance and the business side of technology. The MBA curriculum is STEM designated, and the school offers 14 concentrations plus an entrepreneurship track. If you want a numbers-heavy MBA with a close link to a top computer science university, this is the school’s main selling point.
Tepper MBA acceptance rate and class profile
Tepper does not print an acceptance rate on its own site. U.S. News data analysed by Poets&Quants in August 2026 shows 2,056 applications for the class that entered in fall 2025 and an acceptance rate of 24.3%, with 28.8% of admitted students enrolling. The school’s official profile of that class, the Class of 2027, gives the figures below.
| Class of 2027 (entered fall 2025) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Class size | 144 students |
| International citizens | 38% |
| Countries represented | 21 (school’s count) |
| GMAT (10th edition) average / median | 707 / 710 (middle 80%: 700 to 740) |
| GMAT Focus average / median | 659 / 655 (middle 80%: 595 to 715) |
| GRE Quant / Verbal average | 163 / 159 |
| Executive Assessment average | 155 |
| GPA average / median | 3.33 / 3.38 (middle 80%: 2.80 to 3.79) |
| Work experience average / median | 5.2 years / 5 years |
| Average age | 29 |
| Acceptance rate (U.S. News data via Poets&Quants) | 24.3% |
Two numbers stand out for international applicants. The middle 80% GPA band starts at 2.80, so a second class upper or a modest grade average from a demanding university does not rule you out if your test score and work record are strong. And the GMAT Focus range is wide (595 to 715), which tells you the committee reads the whole file. Poets&Quants also reported in October 2025 that Tepper’s international enrolment had dropped by about 30% over two years, so the school has a reason to want strong international candidates.
Tepper MBA requirements for international students
Everything is submitted online. Here is what the 2026-27 application asks for, taken from the official Tepper full-time MBA application page.
- Degree: a four-year US bachelor’s degree or an equivalent foreign degree.
- Calculus: one semester of college calculus with a B or better. If you lack it, you must complete Tepper’s Calculus Fundamentals course before you start.
- Resume: one to two pages, 12-point standard font, with the start and end month and year for every role.
- Essays: one written essay (500 words maximum), one video essay (up to two minutes) and an optional essay.
- Recommendation: one, written on the GMAC Common Letter of Recommendation, ideally by a current or former supervisor.
- Transcripts: unofficial scans for every degree, showing the degree name, conferral date and grading scale. Web printouts are not accepted. Non-English transcripts need an official translation.
- Test: an official GMAT, GMAT Focus, GRE or Executive Assessment score, or an approved test waiver.
- English test: TOEFL or IELTS, unless you qualify for a waiver.
- Fee: $200 by card. It is waived if you attend a Tepper admissions event, and for reapplicants from the past year.
Test policy and waivers
Scores are valid for five years. If you sat a test more than once, Tepper uses your highest total from a single sitting; it does not take GMAT superscores as the official score, though the committee sees every score you send. The Executive Assessment is meant for applicants with heavy quantitative coursework or STEM work experience. Test waivers are decided case by case on academic readiness, are answered within 10 business days of the deadline, and do not affect scholarship eligibility.
English language requirement
| Test | Tepper recommended minimum |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (older scale) | 25 in each section |
| TOEFL iBT (new 1 to 6 scale) | 5 overall, with at least 5 in each section |
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 overall and 7.0 in each band |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 |
You are exempt if your bachelor’s or graduate degree was taught only in English. Your transcript or degree certificate should say so; if it does not, get a letter from your registrar. Many Nigerian, Ghanaian and Kenyan universities teach in English, but the letter is what the committee needs to see, so request it early.
Tepper MBA deadlines 2026-2027
Round 1 closed on 30 September 2026. These are the dates still ahead for fall 2027 entry.
| Round | Deadline | Decision | Open to international applicants? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round 2 | 8 January 2027 | 10 March 2027 | Yes |
| Round 3 | 3 March 2027 | 22 April 2027 | Yes (final round for internationals) |
| Round 4 | 5 May 2027 | Rolling | No |
| Round 4 Final | 15 June 2027 | Rolling | No |
Visa timing
Round 3 is the last round Tepper accepts from international applicants. A 22 April decision leaves only a few months for the I-20, the SEVIS fee and a US visa interview, and appointment waits in Lagos, Abuja, Accra and Nairobi can be long. If you can be ready by 8 January 2027, apply in Round 2.
Tepper MBA essays and how to answer them
The written essay has a 500-word ceiling and you pick one of two prompts. The video essay is required and the optional essay has no stated word limit.
| Essay | What it asks | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Written essay, option 1 | A time you acted without having all the answers: how you handled it and what happened | 500 words |
| Written essay, option 2 | How you hope to change professionally and personally during the MBA: development goals and the steps you will take | 500 words |
| Video essay | Your post-MBA career goals: target roles, industries or companies, how you will judge options, and the link to your long-term plans | 2 minutes |
| Optional essay | Context such as a resume gap, your choice of recommender or, for reapplicants, how your file has improved | No limit stated |
Option 1: acting without all the answers
Choose a real decision where the information was missing and the stakes were yours. A supply shortage, a project handed to you mid-crisis, or a regulatory change with no guidance all work. Spend one short paragraph on the situation, most of the essay on how you reasoned (what you knew, what you assumed, how you limited the risk) and close with the result and what you would do differently. Tepper is an analytics school, so show your thinking in numbers where you can.
Sample opening, for illustration: “Three weeks after I took over the Kano distribution route, the naira lost a fifth of its value overnight and our supplier stopped quoting prices. I had eleven trucks, forty retailers expecting stock, and no reliable cost figure to plan with.”
Option 2: how you hope to transform
This prompt rewards self-awareness. Name two or three specific gaps (for example, leading people senior to you, or building financial models for investors), say why they matter for your goal, and tie each one to something at Tepper: a course, a concentration, a club or a lab. Avoid general statements about “growth”; the committee wants a plan.
The video essay
Two minutes is about 250 spoken words. Say the role you want straight after the MBA, the industry, two or three example employers, and how that step leads to your long-term goal. Practise with a timer, look at the camera and speak at a relaxed pace. Applicants with a strong accent sometimes rush to sound fluent; slow down instead, because clarity is what the committee is checking.
Sample opening, for illustration: “Right after Tepper I want to join an operations strategy team at a firm like Amazon or McKinsey, working on supply chains in emerging markets.”
Interview format
Interviews are required and by invitation only. Invitations start going out within a week of each round deadline and can arrive at any time before the decision date. The Tepper MBA admissions team runs them, and the questions are behavioural: teamwork, leadership, a success, a failure and your goals. Prepare five or six short stories from your work that you can adapt to any of these themes, and be ready to explain your career goal in under a minute.
What the Tepper admissions committee looks for
- Evidence you can handle a quantitative curriculum: a solid test score, calculus, and analytical work on your resume.
- A clear and realistic career goal. The video essay is built around it.
- Teamwork. Tepper classes are small, and the interview asks directly about working with others.
- A recommendation from someone who has supervised you, with specific examples.
- Fit with Pittsburgh and the school’s technology and analytics focus.
Tepper MBA tuition and cost of attendance 2026-27
Carnegie Mellon’s Student Financial Services office publishes one standard budget for a single graduate student in the full-time MBA. International students pay the same tuition as US students.
| Item (2026-27, standard single budget) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $84,186 |
| Housing | $10,350 |
| Food | $5,176 |
| Books, course materials and supplies | $1,450 |
| Travel allowance | $3,220 |
| Personal expenses | $10,524 |
| Activity, transportation and technology fees | $1,040 |
| Health insurance | $3,352 |
| Estimated loan fees (federal borrowers) | $1,500 |
| Total for the year | $120,798 |
The full-time MBA runs four semesters, so plan on roughly double this figure across the programme, and more if tuition rises for 2027-28. Married students have larger budgets ($131,980 a year for a couple without children). The school also requires a laptop, estimated at $1,500, which is not in the total.
Tepper MBA scholarships for international students
Every admitted applicant is considered for the Tepper School MBA Scholarship automatically, based on the strength of the application. The school does not publish award amounts. Most named fellowships are also decided during admission without a separate form, and only a few carry citizenship rules.
| Award | Who it is for | How to be considered |
|---|---|---|
| Tepper School MBA Scholarship | All admitted applicants, merit based | Automatic |
| Marc & Sally Onetto Graduate Fellowship | Preference for students from EU countries and French-speaking African countries | One-page essay, “Why I Should Receive the Marc & Sally Onetto Graduate Fellowship” |
| Angel G. Jordan Fellowship | Outstanding incoming full-time MBA students | Automatic |
| Jean-Jacques Servan-Schreiber Fellowship | Outstanding incoming full-time MBA students | Automatic |
| Forté Fellowship | Women, selected through admission; Tepper funded | Through the admission review |
| Murat Ozyegin Fellowship | Turkish students with high financial need; up to $30,000 in year one | Essay and release statement |
| Consortium Fellowship | Members of the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management; $10,000 to full tuition | Separate Consortium application |
If you are from Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon or another French-speaking African country, the Onetto Fellowship is worth the extra page. For broader funding ideas, see our list of American scholarships open to international students.
Loans without a US cosigner
International students cannot take US federal loans. Carnegie Mellon says some private loans are open to its students “with or without a co-signer” through its FASTChoice comparison tool, but it does not name any specific lender for international students, and Tepper’s pages do not mention Prodigy or MPOWER. Check FASTChoice after admission and ask Student Financial Services which lenders accept international borrowers without a cosigner.
STEM designation and OPT
Tepper describes its MBA curriculum as STEM designated and says F-1 students graduating from it may apply for the 24-month STEM extension of Optional Practical Training. With the standard 12 months of OPT, that gives up to three years of US work authorisation after graduation, which also means up to three chances at the H-1B lottery.
Tepper MBA salary and employment
The latest official report covers the Class of 2025.
| Class of 2025 outcome | Figure |
|---|---|
| Received an offer within 3 months of graduation | 83% |
| Median base salary | $160,000 |
| Mean base salary | $154,846 |
| Average signing bonus | $38,610 |
| Consulting | 35.7% of hires |
| Technology | 25.1% |
| Financial services | 9.9% |
| Top employers by hires | Amazon, PwC, McKinsey & Company, Deloitte, Boston Consulting Group, Republic Services, Google, Jefferies, Ford Motor Co., Kearney |
The report does not break out results for international graduates. Consulting and technology firms are the usual sponsors of H-1B visas for MBA hires, which suits Tepper’s placement mix, but plan your job search from the first semester.
Costs not covered by the official budget
- The $200 application fee and test fees (GMAT, GRE or EA, plus TOEFL or IELTS).
- Credential translation, courier charges and any transcript evaluation you choose to buy.
- The SEVIS I-901 fee and the US visa application fee.
- Flights to Pittsburgh and the deposit for an apartment, often due before your first loan disbursement.
- A laptop ($1,500 estimated by the school).
- Winter clothing; Pittsburgh winters are cold and snowy.
- Recruiting travel, club dues and treks in the first year.
- Living costs during the summer internship if it is unpaid or in an expensive city.
Common mistakes international applicants make
- Waiting for Round 3. It is the last round for internationals, and it leaves the least time for visas and scholarship negotiation.
- Skipping the calculus check. Without a B or better in college calculus you must take the Calculus Fundamentals course before starting.
- Uploading a web printout of your transcript. Tepper rejects these; scan the signed transcript with its grading scale.
- Assuming an English-medium degree waives the TOEFL automatically. You need the documents or a registrar letter that say so.
- Writing a vague video answer. The prompt asks for target roles, industries or companies; name them.
- Sending a recommendation from a senior executive who barely knows you instead of the manager who saw your work.
Who should apply to Tepper
Tepper suits you if you want consulting, technology, operations or analytics roles, you are comfortable with heavy quantitative work, and you prefer a small class where people know each other. It is also a sensible choice if you need the STEM OPT extension. It suits you less if you want a large-city lifestyle or a programme centred on, say, media or luxury brands. With a 24.3% acceptance rate, I would pair it with at least one school in the 30% to 35% range.
