Carleton College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline

Carleton College Admission Requirements for International Students 2027: Acceptance Rate, Tuition, Scholarships and Deadline
Carleton is free to apply, test optional and meets full need without loans, but international aid is limited. Here are the 18% acceptance rate, the $104,746 international cost estimate, the CSS Profile or ISFAA rules and the 15 November 2026 and 15 January 2027 deadlines.

Carleton College admission requirements for international students are simple: apply free through the Common App, Coalition App or QuestBridge, send your transcript, a counselor report and two teacher recommendations, add a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score if you studied in another language, and complete Carleton’s Certification of Finances. Carleton is test optional and charges no application fee. It meets 100% of demonstrated need for every student it admits, but its funding for international students is limited, so asking for aid makes admission more competitive.

Carleton admitted 18% of 8,226 applicants for the Class of 2030, which started in fall 2026, and 12% of that class are international citizens. In the U.S. News 2027 edition it is No. 16 among National Liberal Arts Colleges. For fall 2027 entry, the Fall Early Decision deadline is 15 November 2026 and the Winter Early Decision and Regular Decision deadline is 15 January 2027. All figures below were checked on Carleton’s own pages on 29 October 2026.

Carleton ranking and acceptance rate

In the U.S. News 2027 Best Colleges edition, released on 22 September 2026, Carleton is No. 16 among National Liberal Arts Colleges. The Carletonian, the student newspaper, reported that this was Carleton’s first fall out of the top 10 in about 30 years; in the 2026 edition it was No. 10 (tied). The college has led U.S. News’s separate Best Undergraduate Teaching list for 15 straight years as of the 2026 edition, which says more about daily life in class than the overall rank does.

International citizens12%, plus 9% dual citizens

Carleton’s 2025-26 Common Data Set, which covers students who started in fall 2025, gives an admit rate of about 21.8%, with SAT scores of 1460 to 1530 and ACT scores of 32 to 35 for the middle 50% of enrolled students who submitted them. The class profile page does not list test ranges, so use the CDS figures as the guide. Carleton does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international applicants.

Carleton tuition for international students in 2026-27

Item2026-27 amount
Tuition$75,186
Housing$10,194
Food$9,120
Student activity fee$480
Comprehensive fee (billed)$94,980
Estimated cost of attendance for international students$104,746

The $104,746 figure comes from Carleton’s international admissions page. It adds books, personal costs, travel, health insurance and break expenses to the billed fee, which makes it more realistic than the headline number. Carleton also warns families to expect yearly increases of about 4 to 5%, so plan four years around a rising total.

Carleton scholarships for international students: how aid works

Carleton gives aid on need. There is no merit scholarship, and Carleton offers no athletic scholarships either. The rules for international applicants are:

  • Full need without loans: Carleton says it meets 100% of demonstrated need without loans and has no income caps for aid eligibility. A site banner says loans will be replaced in need-based packages from 2027-28, the year the next class starts.
  • Limited international funding: Carleton says funding for international students is limited, and only a very limited number of international scholarships go out in Early Decision. In practice that makes admission need-aware for international aid applicants: your request for aid is weighed against a fixed budget.
  • No second chance: Carleton will not consider a new or revised aid application once you have received your offer of admission. Ask for aid when you apply, or plan to pay the full cost for four years.
  • Aid stays level: the international aid page says your level of aid stays the same for all four years, and you do not reapply each year.
  • What students actually receive: in 2025-26 the average need-based aid package was $71,866 and a family on aid paid an average of $21,763. For the Class of 2029, 60% received need-based aid, with an average of $78,988. Aid offers also include campus work of about $3,200 in the first year.

Forms: CSS Profile or ISFAA, plus the Certification of Finances

  1. Tick the financial aid box on your admission application.
  2. Show your need with either the CSS Profile (Carleton code 6081, $25 fee) or the free International Student Application for Financial Assistance (ISFAA), which you send to admissions. Both custodial and noncustodial parents complete a CSS Profile if you use it.
  3. Complete the Certification of Finances (CoF). Every international applicant fills this in, even without an aid request. It appears on your applicant status page after you apply and shows how much your family can pay. Carleton uses it for immigration paperwork too.
  4. Translate documents properly. Documents not in English need an official translation. You may not translate your own documents; an EducationUSA office can point you to a translator.

Carleton admission requirements for international students: the application parts

  1. Application: Common App, Coalition App or QuestBridge. Carleton states it has no preference.
  2. Fee: none.
  3. Transcript: grades from your first three years of secondary school, your final-year schedule and first-term final-year grades when they are ready.
  4. Counselor recommendation (School Report).
  5. Two academic teacher recommendations.
  6. English test if English is not your main language of instruction.
  7. Certification of Finances (international applicants only).
  8. Optional: interview, arts supplement (visual arts, music, theatre, dance or film) and SAT or ACT scores. Creative writing portfolios are not accepted.

Carleton’s admission criteria page says the strongest candidates take four years each of English and mathematics and three or more years each of science, social science and a foreign or classical language, with advanced courses where the school offers them.

Testing policy: permanently test optional

Carleton made test-optional admission permanent for all applicants in 2025. If you send the SAT or ACT, the writing section is not needed and you can self-report; enrolling students later submit official reports.

English requirements

You need TOEFL, IELTS or the Duolingo English Test if English is not spoken in your home or your classes have not been taught in English for the last four years. Carleton gives these as the scores of students who are “best prepared,” not as hard cut-offs.

TestScore guidance
TOEFL iBT (new scale, from 2026)5.5 or above
TOEFL iBT (taken before 2026)100 or above
IELTS7.0 or above
Duolingo English Test130 or above

Interviews

Interviews are optional and many admitted students never have one. You can interview on campus, virtually or with an alumni representative in some regions, from early June until 15 January of your final year. Carleton also accepts InitialView and Vericant interviews, which are useful for international applicants who cannot reach an alumni interviewer.

Winter Early Decision (binding)15 January 202715 February 20271 March 2027

Carleton’s deadline page lists days and months without a year; the years above follow from the 2027-28 CSS Profile named on the international page. Late Regular Decision applications are read only if space remains. International admitted students receive their decision online and by courier.

Deadline

Fall Early Decision closes on 15 November 2026, and your aid form and Certification of Finances are due by the same date. Carleton will not open a new aid application after you are admitted.

How to write Carleton’s optional essay

Carleton has asked for a short “Why Carleton” style supplement in past years. For the 2026-27 cycle, essay guides report that the required supplement was dropped and replaced by one optional box asking whether anything is missing from your application, with a 250-word limit. Check the Carleton section of your Common App before you write, since the application itself is final.

If the box is there, use it for something your file would otherwise miss:

  • Context the transcript cannot give: a grading system US readers may not know, a term lost to strikes or school closures, or a family responsibility that limited activities.
  • A real link to Carleton: the trimester calendar (three ten-week terms), the 880-acre Cowling Arboretum, or the fact that 69% of students study off campus. Mention something you would actually use.
  • One concrete story, not a list of achievements already in the activities section.

A short opening, written for illustration only:

“Our school’s chemistry lab had one working Bunsen burner, so I learned titration by candlelight during the 2024 power cuts, and that is the reason a ten-week trimester of lab work sounds like a luxury to me.”

The opening ties a specific memory to a specific feature of Carleton. Keep the rest just as concrete and stop well before 250 words if you have said what you needed to.

What happens after you apply

  1. Applicant status page: check it within a few days for missing items and the Certification of Finances.
  2. Test scores (if any): Carleton needs them by 20 November for Fall ED and 20 January for Winter ED and Regular Decision.
  3. Midyear grades: send first-term final-year grades as soon as your school issues them.
  4. Decision: 15 December, 15 February or 1 April depending on the round. If you asked for aid, the aid offer comes with the admission letter.
  5. Early Decision deferrals: an ED applicant who is deferred moves into Regular Decision and is no longer bound.
  6. After you confirm: Carleton issues your I-20 using the Certification of Finances, and you book the F-1 visa interview.

Common mistakes international applicants make

  • Skipping the aid box to look “cheaper.” Carleton will not take an aid application after admission, so this can leave you admitted with no way to pay.
  • Forgetting the Certification of Finances. It is required even if your family pays in full.
  • Translating your own documents. Carleton does not accept self-translations.
  • Treating the English scores as minimums to scrape past. They describe well-prepared students; a 100 on the old TOEFL scale is the guide, not a target to fall short of.
  • Sending a weak SAT. The test is optional; scores well below 1460 do not help.
  • Using Early Decision without a firm budget. ED is binding and international ED aid is very limited.

Costs that aid does not cover

  • Long flights home: Carleton includes travel in its estimate, but students from Africa or Asia often pay more than the average.
  • Winter gear: Minnesota winters are very cold, and a proper coat and boots cost real money.
  • Breaks: if you stay in the US over winter or summer breaks, housing and food can add to your costs.
  • Visa costs: the US visa application and SEVIS fees are paid before you travel (check current amounts on your US embassy website).
  • Your family contribution: whatever the CSS Profile or ISFAA shows your family can pay stays your responsibility each year.

Carleton graduate admissions in brief

Carleton is an undergraduate-only college. It awards the Bachelor of Arts and has no master’s or doctoral programmes, so graduate applicants should look at research universities instead. Carleton’s At a Glance page lists business and finance, education and healthcare as the most common fields alumni have worked in since 1990.

Majors, campus and Northfield

Carleton was founded in 1866 and has about 2,044 students from 49 US states and 53 countries. It offers 33 majors and 39 minors with an 8:1 student-faculty ratio. The year runs on trimesters: three ten-week terms, so you take fewer courses at once and study each in more depth. Ninety-six percent of students live on campus, and housing is guaranteed for four years.

The campus covers 1,040 acres, including the 880-acre Cowling Arboretum, in Northfield, Minnesota, a small town about 45 minutes south of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Carleton has 20 NCAA Division III teams. About 10% of all students are international, from 51 countries, and 28% speak a language other than English at home.

Who should apply to Carleton

Apply if you want small classes taught by professors who are known for teaching, a close residential community and a calendar that lets you go deep in a few subjects at a time. Carleton fits students who are curious across subjects and who do well in discussion-heavy classes. The free application and test-optional policy make it an easy addition to your list.

Think twice if you need a big city, want to start a professional degree straight away, or are counting on a merit scholarship. Carleton has neither merit awards nor graduate schools, and its international aid budget is small, so a full-aid applicant is competing for few places. Pair it with a college or two that are need-blind for internationals.
