Yale SOM MBA admission requirements for international students are a one-page resume, unofficial transcripts, a GMAT or GRE score, one 500-word essay, two professional recommendations, two short video answers, an online Behavioral Assessment and an interview by invitation. Yale does not ask non-native English speakers for TOEFL, IELTS or PTE scores, and it accepts three-year bachelor’s degrees. The Yale School of Management is tied at No. 11 in the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools ranking, and 41% of its Class of 2027 are international students.
Round 1 for August 2027 entry closed on 15 September 2026, so the deadline to aim for now is Round 2 on 6 January 2027, with decisions on 18 March 2027. Yale’s 2026-27 budget for a single student is $128,976, including $90,900 in tuition. Scholarships are awarded after admission through a short supplemental application, and the Yale Africa Impact Scholarship covers at least half of tuition for admitted students from African countries who plan to return to work in Africa.

Yale SOM MBA ranking
In the U.S. News 2026 Best Business Schools list, published in April 2026, Yale SOM tied for No. 11 among full-time MBA programmes with UVA Darden. Stanford was No. 1 in that edition. Yale’s name carries weight beyond business, which helps if you are interested in public policy, nonprofit or healthcare work. One in five students in the Class of 2027 came from nonprofit or government jobs.
Yale SOM class profile
Yale reports the middle 80% range and the median for test scores, collected when the Class of 2027 enrolled.
| Measure (Class of 2027) | Low (10th percentile) | Median | High (90th percentile) |
|---|---|---|---|
| GMAT | 691 | 740 | 760 |
| GMAT Focus | 638 | 675 | 715 |
| GRE Verbal | 158 | 163 | 169 |
| GRE Quant | 160 | 166 | 170 |
| Undergraduate GPA (U.S. schools) | 3.37 | 3.69 | 3.93 |
- 367 students enrolled; 44% women.
- 41% international students, with 47 countries represented.
- By citizenship, 63% North America, 26% Asia Pacific, 5% Africa and the Middle East, 4% Latin America and the Caribbean and 2% Europe.
- 47% of the class submitted GRE scores, so the GRE is as accepted as the GMAT.
- Undergraduate majors: 32% STEM, 29% business, 20% humanities and social sciences, 18% economics.
- Before SOM: 25% financial services, 19% consulting, 12% technology, 11% nonprofit and 9% government.
Yale does not publish an acceptance rate on its admissions pages or its class profile, and it gives no admit rate for international applicants.
Yale SOM MBA requirements for international students
- Undergraduate degree: international applicants with a three-year degree from an accredited institution may apply.
- Transcripts: unofficial copies are enough when you apply, including transcripts for every course taken for degree credit elsewhere. Official transcripts are required only when you enrol.
- Test score: a verified GMAT or GRE, including the online and shorter versions. Yale’s FAQ says it does not waive the test for any applicant. Its application guide adds that it accepts the LSAT from candidates who have considered law school. There is no minimum score, and Yale will consider a GMAT superscore.
- Essay: one essay, chosen from three prompts, up to 500 words.
- Video questions: two questions, 60 seconds each, completed after you submit and pay. Yale tells applicants not to use AI for them.
- Behavioral Assessment: an online ETS exercise of about 25 minutes with 130 pairs of statements. No preparation is needed, and Yale says it is never the deciding factor.
- Recommendations: two professional letters from people senior to you, ideally including your current supervisor. You may have no role in drafting or submitting them.
- Resume: one page unless you have more than ten years of experience.
- Application fee: $250 standard, $175 if you earn less than $50,000 a year and $125 if you earn less than $25,000. Waiver requests must be in at least 48 hours before the deadline.
- Interview: by invitation, and every admitted applicant has been interviewed.
Yale lets recommenders write in their own language and use translation tools, but the letters must be submitted in English. Our guide to recommendation letters shows how to brief a referee with specific examples, which is all you are allowed to do here.
English language requirements
Yale SOM does not require the TOEFL, IELTS or PTE from any applicant, including non-native English speakers. The committee judges your English through the essay, the video answers and the interview, so treat those as your English test. Practise speaking answers aloud before you record the videos.
Yale SOM MBA deadlines 2026-2027
| Round | Application deadline | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 (closed) | 15 September 2026 | 3 December 2026 |
| Round 2 | 6 January 2027 | 18 March 2027 |
| Round 3 | 7 April 2027 | 13 May 2027 |
QuestBridge and Consortium applicants follow their own deadlines. If you will need an F-1 visa, a Round 3 decision on 13 May 2027 leaves a short window before an August start, so Round 2 is the safer choice.
Deadline
Round 2 closes on 6 January 2027. The video questions and Behavioral Assessment come after you submit, so leave yourself a few days after the deadline free to complete them.
Yale SOM MBA essay 2026-2027 and how to answer it
You write one essay and choose one of three prompts. Yale says 500 words is a limit, not a target. Pick the prompt where you have the strongest single story.
Prompt 1: The biggest commitment you have ever made
Yale asks why the commitment matters to you and what you have done to support it. Show actions over time: what you gave up, what you did when it got hard and what changed because you stayed with it.
Sample opening, for illustration: “When my younger brother failed his school exams twice, I promised our mother I would tutor him every evening until he passed, and I kept that promise for 14 months while starting my first job.”
Prompt 2: The community that has been most meaningful to you
You must answer two halves: what you gained from the community and the most important thing you contributed to it. Many applicants write only about what they gained. Give the contribution at least half the essay and make it concrete.
Sample opening, for illustration: “The Accra coding meetup started as twelve people in a borrowed classroom; by the time I handed over as organiser, it had trained more than 200 people for their first tech jobs.”
Prompt 3: The most significant challenge you have faced
Yale asks how you confronted the challenge and how it shaped you. Spend little time describing the problem and most of it on your decisions and what you do differently now. A challenge where you made a mistake and recovered is often stronger than one where you were simply unlucky.
Sample opening, for illustration: “Three weeks after I took over the Nairobi branch, our largest client cancelled its contract, and I had to decide which of my nine staff we could keep.”
Video questions and Behavioral Assessment
The two video questions are recorded after submission, with 60 seconds per answer, and Yale says they have a light touch in the review. Answer in a quiet room with good light and look at the camera. The Behavioral Assessment asks you to choose between pairs of statements; answer honestly and quickly, since it is adaptive and there is nothing to study.
Yale SOM MBA interview
- By invitation only, sent on a rolling basis throughout each round.
- Lasts 30 minutes.
- Conducted by a second-year student, a recent alum or an Admissions Committee member.
- The interviewer sees only your resume.
- Questions are mostly behavioural (“tell me about a time when…”), plus your reasons for an MBA and your post-MBA plans.
Prepare six to eight stories from your work and community life that you can fit to different questions: leading a team, a failure, a conflict, a hard decision, influencing without authority and an achievement you are proud of. Keep each to about two minutes.
What the Yale SOM admissions committee looks for
- Academic readiness: a strong GMAT or GRE and transcript, because Yale will not waive the test.
- Professional growth: a one-page resume with quantified results and rising responsibility.
- Character and self-awareness: the essay, video and Behavioral Assessment all aim at how you think and behave.
- Interest beyond your job: 20% of the Class of 2027 worked in nonprofits or government before SOM, so evidence of impact outside your day job counts.
- Strong references: two professional letters from people senior to you, written without your help.
Yale SOM MBA tuition and cost of attendance 2026-2027
| Item (2026-27, single student) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition | $90,900 |
| Programme fee | $500 |
| Health insurance | $3,764 |
| Room and board (housing, food, utilities) | $22,991 |
| Books and course materials | $1,440 |
| Personal expenses | $5,525 |
| Transportation | $3,856 |
| Total budget | $128,976 |
Yale charges the same tuition to U.S. and international students. Every student is enrolled in the Yale Health plan unless they have other qualifying hospital insurance. Over two years, plan for roughly $258,000 before any scholarship, though the second-year figure will be set later.
Yale SOM MBA scholarships for international students
Yale awards scholarships after admission through a short supplemental application. Review is holistic, and most awards cover both years. Yale gave more than $7.8 million in grant aid in 2024.
| Scholarship | Value | Who can get it |
|---|---|---|
| Yale Africa Impact Scholarship | At least half of full-time tuition | Admitted students from an African country who plan to return to Africa within two years of graduating and work there at least two years |
| Global Leaders from India MBA Scholarship | At least half of tuition; up to five a year | Admitted students from India; no separate application |
| Yale-FUNED Scholarship | Not stated | Admitted students from Mexico |
| Aspire Fellowship | $60,000 up to full tuition and fees | Admitted students; eligibility details not stated |
| Dean’s Scholarship | Not stated | Admitted students |
| Forté Fellowship | Over $4 million awarded in 2024 | Admitted students chosen as Forté Fellows |
| Yale Scholarships for Entrepreneurs | Two merit scholarships per class, plus up to five Entrepreneurial Fellows with two years of loan deferral | Admitted students with entrepreneurial plans |
| Yale-Reaching OUT LGBT MBA Fellowship | Not stated | Admitted students; LGBTQ+ leadership fellowship |
| Consortium Fellowship | Up to full tuition and fees for two years | Only applicants who apply through The Consortium |
For African applicants the Africa Impact Scholarship is the most important line on this page. You apply to the MBA in the normal way and are considered once admitted, but you must genuinely intend to return to Africa within two years, so your goals essay and interview answers should match that plan. For more options to combine with Yale funding, see our list of scholarships for African students.
Loans for international students
Yale names Quorum Federal Credit Union as a lender that accepts applications from international students in its MBA programmes, and its international loans page says MBA students can borrow up to 90% of the cost of attendance. Yale’s financial FAQ gives 80%, so confirm the limit with the financial aid office. Yale does not list Prodigy or MPOWER.
Is the Yale SOM MBA STEM designated?
Yes. In October 2024 Yale designated its MBA as a STEM programme under the U.S. Department of Education’s management science classification, starting with the Class of 2026. Eligible graduates on F-1 visas can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension after their 12 months of OPT, giving up to three years of U.S. work authorisation without changing visa. Before this, only the management science major inside the MBA qualified.
Yale SOM MBA salary and employment

| Received an offer within 3 months | 82.1% |

Common mistakes international applicants make
- Hoping for a test waiver: Yale does not waive the GMAT or GRE for anyone. Book your test early enough to retake it.
- Writing the essay to the limit: 500 words is the ceiling. A tight 400-word essay with one strong story is better than a padded one.
- Drafting your own recommendations: common in some countries, but Yale says you may have no role in writing or submitting them.
- A two-page resume: Yale wants one page unless you have more than ten years of experience.
- Ignoring the Africa Impact conditions: applicants who apply for it while describing long-term U.S. careers send mixed signals.
- Leaving the videos to the last minute: they come after submission, and late completion holds up your file.
Costs not covered
- Application costs: the $250 fee (or $175 or $125 on the sliding scale), GMAT or GRE fees and score reports.
- Visa costs: the F-1 visa application and SEVIS fees, plus travel to the embassy for the interview.
- Flights to New Haven beyond the $3,856 transport line.
- Family members: the published budget is for a single student.
- Set-up costs: rent deposits, furniture and winter clothing.
- A U.S. bank account is needed for refunds by direct deposit, so you will open one after you arrive.
Who should apply to Yale SOM
Yale suits applicants who want a top-15 MBA with strong consulting and finance placement and also care about government, nonprofit, healthcare or social enterprise work. It also suits strong candidates who never took an English test, since none is needed, and Africans planning to return home, given the Africa Impact Scholarship. It is a weaker fit if you cannot reach a competitive GMAT or GRE, since there is no waiver, or if you want a very large class and alumni network.
