The University of East London (UEL) is offering a fully funded PhD in London at its Institute for the Science of Early Years and Youth (ISEY) in Stratford. The full-time award pays a stipend of £22,780 a year plus tuition fees at the home rate, and the PhD starts in January 2027. The project studies how young children and their caregivers interact, using dual-brain EEG and eye-tracking. Applications close on Friday 20 November 2026, and you apply by email with a CV, two referees and a personal statement of up to 1,000 words.
There is one catch international applicants need to know before anything else. The funding covers home fees only. UK nationals and people with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme qualify. International applicants can apply only if they self-fund. Below is the full breakdown of the UEL fully funded PhD: the project, the money, who is eligible, how to apply, how to write the 1,000-word statement and how this award compares with funded PhDs elsewhere in Europe.

The project
The advert’s title is “How engagement with complex screen media is reshaping early cognitive development and attention systems”. The project summary underneath describes a different focus: how shared reading between caregivers and young children supports early learning, and the brain mechanisms between two people that drive those benefits. It sets out four questions on caregiver-child coordination, neural coordination, attention and engagement, and how the timing and quality of interaction predict later outcomes.
The title and the summary don’t match. Before you write your statement, email the supervisor to ask which project the place is for, or write a statement that shows interest in both attention and caregiver-child interaction. That one email can save you from writing about the wrong project.
Methods you would use
- Dual-brain EEG, recording caregiver and child at the same time.
- Eye-tracking.
- Possibly custom wearable devices.
- Analysis of multi-stream physiological and behavioural recordings.
- ISEY’s virtual reality and motion-tracking lab.
The PhD also includes knowledge exchange: sharing findings with teachers and early years practitioners through articles, events and training.
Funding: what is covered and what isn’t
| Cost | Covered? |
|---|---|
| Living stipend, full time | Yes, £22,780 a year |
| Tuition fees for home students | Yes |
| Tuition fees for international students | No; the advert says international applicants must self-fund |
| UK Student visa and Immigration Health Surcharge | Not mentioned; assume you pay |
| Relocation to London | Not mentioned |
A note on the stipend figure. UKRI’s own page lists its minimum London-weighted stipend as £22,780 for 2025 to 2026 and £23,805 for 2026 to 2027, which starts on 1 October 2026. The UEL advert quotes £22,780. Since the PhD starts in January 2027, ask the supervisor whether the stipend will be paid at the 2026 to 2027 rate. Don’t assume either figure.
The salary range on Times Higher Education (£5,000 to £22,780) mixes fees and stipend into one line. You don’t receive £5,000 in cash. The lower figure is the approximate fee amount; the stipend is the £22,780.
Who is eligible
| Requirement | Level |
|---|---|
| First or upper second-class honours degree | Required |
| Master’s in a relevant discipline | Preferred |
| Psychology background | Expected; computer science, educational psychology and media analysis also welcome |
| Experience working with children | Highly desirable |
| Programming and data analysis tools | Preferable |
| Interest in auditory or visual attention, speech and language processing, arousal and EEG | Expected |
| Familiarity with eye-tracking and EEG | Highly desirable |
| Home fee status | Required for the funded fee; international applicants must self-fund |
| Based in Stratford at least 50% of the time | Required; daily presence may be needed during data collection |
Can international students apply?
Yes, but only as self-funded applicants for the fee. The advert doesn’t say whether an international applicant who self-funds the fees would still receive the stipend. Ask before you apply. You would also need a UK Student visa, and the lab presence rule means you must live in or near London. The English language requirement isn’t stated in the advert.
If you need full funding as an international student, look at our Chevening Scholarship guide for UK master’s study, or at funded PhDs in countries where doctoral researchers are paid as employees, such as Finland and Austria, listed in the comparison table below.
How to apply for the UEL fully funded PhD
- Confirm the project: email I.Marriott-haresign@uel.ac.uk to clarify the screen media versus shared reading question and, if you are international, the funding position.
- Update your CV: education with classifications, research experience, work with children, programming and EEG or eye-tracking experience.
- Choose two referees: at least one must be academic. UEL will contact them directly.
- Write a personal statement or cover letter: no more than 1,000 words.
- Email everything: send the CV, referee names and contact details, and the statement to I.Marriott-haresign@uel.ac.uk with “PHD004-26” in the subject line.
- Meet the deadline: Friday 20 November 2026.
- Keep December free: interviews are likely to happen in December 2026.
Home fees only
The funded place covers tuition at the home rate. International applicants can apply only if they self-fund the fees, so settle the money question with the supervisor before you invest time in the application.
How to write the 1,000-word personal statement
With only 1,000 words, every paragraph needs a job. A structure that works:
- Opening (about 100 words): the question about early development that interests you and why.
- Your preparation (about 300 words): your degree, grades, dissertation and any research assistant work. Name methods: EEG, eye-tracking, behavioural coding, Python, R or MATLAB.
- Work with children (about 150 words): nursery, school, clinic or lab experience, and what it taught you about testing young children.
- The project (about 300 words): show you understand dual-brain EEG and caregiver-child interaction, and suggest one idea of your own, such as a measure or an analysis.
- Why ISEY and what next (about 150 words): why this lab, the knowledge exchange side, and your career plan.
A sample opening, for illustration only: “During my master’s dissertation I coded hours of video of toddlers playing with their parents and kept noticing that the best moments of learning came when both were looking at the same thing at the same time; I want to measure what happens in their brains at those moments.” Write your own version from real experience.
What happens after you apply
The supervisor and the institute will shortlist from the written applications and contact your referees. Shortlisted candidates are likely to be interviewed in December 2026. A PhD interview at a lab like this usually covers your past research, your understanding of the methods, a short discussion of the project and practical questions about working with families. Some labs also ask for a short presentation. Successful applicants then go through UEL’s admission process before the January 2027 start.
Common mistakes
- Assuming “fully funded” means international fees are covered. They are not.
- Writing more than 1,000 words.
- Choosing two non-academic referees. At least one must be academic.
- Writing only about screen media without mentioning caregiver-child interaction, or the reverse, when the advert covers both.
- Forgetting the 50% on-site rule and planning to study remotely.
- Leaving out your experience with children, which the advert calls highly desirable.
Who should apply and who shouldn’t
You should apply if you have home fee status, a first or 2:1 in psychology or a related field (ideally with a master’s), experience with children, and an interest in EEG, attention and early development. Graduates in computer science or media analysis with strong data skills and a real interest in child development can also compete.
I wouldn’t apply if you are an international applicant who can’t pay the fee difference, if you can’t live in London, or if you have no interest in lab work with babies and young children.

About UEL and Stratford
UEL is a public university in east London with campuses at Stratford and the Royal Docks. In the Guardian University Guide 2026 it ranked 33rd out of 123 UK institutions, its highest position so far, according to UEL. ISEY, led by Prof. Sam Wass, studies early development and attention, and runs EEG, eye-tracking, virtual reality and motion-tracking facilities at Stratford.
Stratford is in the east of London, next to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, with fast rail and Underground links to central London. London rents are high, and a £22,780 stipend is tight in the capital, so most PhD students share flats. Budget carefully for rent, Transport for London fares and, for international applicants, visa costs.
