The UNIUYO cut off mark for Philosophy is 150 in the UTME, and that is the figure 2027 candidates should plan with. The University of Uyo set 150 as the minimum for its 2026/2027 Post-UTME and Direct Entry screening, and only for candidates who chose UNIUYO as their first choice. Philosophy is in UNIUYO’s Faculty of Arts, and UNIUYO did not publish a separate figure for it.
2027/2028 update: UNIUYO cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
UNIUYO does not publish a departmental cut-off for Philosophy or for any other course. The 150 is a gate into screening, and the department then fills its places on merit, so the score of the last person admitted sits above 150 and changes every year. My safe target score for Philosophy at UNIUYO is 205 or more; that is my own advice, explained below, and it is not a UNIUYO figure.
UNIUYO cut off mark for Philosophy at a glance

| JAMB national minimum for universities | 150 | Official (JAMB policy meeting, 11 May 2026) |
| UNIUYO departmental cut-off for Philosophy | Not published | No official figure exists |
| Safe target score (my advice) | 205 and above | Consultant advice, not a UNIUYO rule |

UNIUYO Philosophy cut-off history
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | Minimum UTME score to apply for Post-UTME or DE screening, UNIUYO first choice | Official UNIUYO notice |
| 2025/2026 | 150 | Same rule, first choice only | Reported by an abstechconnect reprint (15 August 2025); original not seen |
| 2023/2024 supplementary | 140 and above | Supplementary admission for candidates who sat UNIUYO screening and missed their first course | Official notice signed by the Registrar |
| Any year | Various | Departmental “cut-off marks” printed on blogs | Unofficial; no UNIUYO document behind them |
UNIUYO’s floor has been 150 with the first-choice rule for the last two sessions. Philosophy is a moderate-competition course and often receives candidates who missed Law or English.
Safe target score for Philosophy at UNIUYO (my advice)
This table is my judgement as an admissions adviser. UNIUYO has never published these bands, so treat them as planning numbers.
| Your UTME score | My read for Philosophy at UNIUYO |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for UNIUYO screening in any course |
| 150 to 169 | Eligible to apply, but a Philosophy place is unlikely; you may be offered a related course instead |
| 170 to 184 | A fair chance, helped by good O’level grades |
| 185 to 204 | Good chance |
| 205 and above | Strong. This is the range I would aim for. |
Philosophy is less crowded than English or History, but it attracts good candidates who see it as a route to Law or graduate study. For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 185, ideally 205, and pair it with clean O’level credits in the subjects listed below.
Merit, catchment and the federal quota
UNIUYO is a federal university, so it admits under the federal guidelines that JAMB applies: 45% of places on merit, 35% for catchment states and 20% for educationally less developed states. UNIUYO has not published which states it treats as its catchment in any source I reached. In practice, a candidate who misses the merit list can still be picked on catchment or ELDS, which is one reason two people with the same score can get different results.
UTME subject combination and O’level requirements for Philosophy at UNIUYO
| Requirement | Philosophy at UNIUYO |
|---|---|
| UTME subjects | Use of English and any three subjects |
| O’level | Five credits including English Language and four other relevant subjects. UNIUYO remark: a credit in one science subject and at least a pass in Mathematics |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB (GCE also accepted by most universities); confirm on the portal |
| Sittings | JAMB’s brochure gives no UNIUYO sitting rule; one sitting is safer |
| Direct Entry | Any two A level passes. UNIUYO remark: two A level subjects, or ND or NCE in a cognate programme or subject, at credit or merit level |
| Other requirement | No course test or interview is mentioned in the 2026/2027 notice |
Philosophy has the loosest UTME line of any course here (any three subjects with English), but UNIUYO adds two O’level conditions on JAMB’s brochure: a credit in one science subject and at least a pass in Mathematics. Arts students who dropped all sciences after JSS should check this before they choose the course.
Basic Studies: another way into Philosophy
UNIUYO also runs a one-year Basic Studies programme that feeds all its faculties. The 2026/2027 advert, signed by the Registrar, Mrs Blossom E. Okorie, asks for five credits including English and Mathematics plus three relevant subjects at not more than two sittings, says no JAMB score is required, and lets successful students move into 200 level through JAMB Direct Entry if they meet the course criteria. The form cost ₦15,500, and admission is usually through a CBT screening test. Arts candidates can use it too: the advert lists the Faculty of Arts among those Basic Studies feeds.
How UNIUYO Post-UTME screening works
The 2026/2027 notice was titled “Sale of Admissions form for 2026/2027 Post-UTME/Direct Entry Screening Exercise”. It opened screening to UTME candidates with 150 or more who picked UNIUYO first, and to Direct Entry candidates who picked UNIUYO first in JAMB DE.
| Detail | UNIUYO 2026/2027 screening |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | UNIUYO first choice, UTME 150 or above; DE candidates with UNIUYO first |
| Second choice candidates | Not mentioned in the notice; do a change of institution to be safe |
| Fee | ₦2,000, non-refundable, paid with a Remita RRR |
| Portal | admissions.uniuyo.edu.ng |
| Documents | Uploaded as PDF on the form |
| Output | Printed 2026/2027 Screening Exercise Slip |
| Closing date | Friday 7 August 2026 according to a blog reprint; the official page showed no date |
| Test format | Not published for regular Post-UTME |
| Aggregate formula | Not published |
UNIUYO’s notice calls the process a “screening exercise” and says nothing about a written or CBT test for regular candidates, so I can’t tell you there is a test or that there isn’t. Prepare as if there will be one, using the JAMB syllabus for your four subjects.
Worked example for a Philosophy candidate
UNIUYO has not published how it ranks candidates, so the useful calculation is the gap between your score, the 150 minimum and the safe target.
Take Akanimo Ekong, who scored 194 with B3 in English, C4 in Literature, B3 in Government, C5 in Biology and C6 in Mathematics.
- Eligibility: 194 minus 150 = 44. Akanimo clears UNIUYO’s minimum by 44 marks.
- Against my safe target: 205 minus 194 = 11. Akanimo is 11 marks short of the score I would call strong, but inside my good-chance band.
- O’level check: a Biology credit meets UNIUYO’s science rule, and C6 in Mathematics is above the pass it asks for.
- What I would advise: at 194 he has a good chance. I would keep Philosophy first.
Mbuotidem Udo scored 161 with arts credits only, with an F9 in Mathematics. 161 minus 150 = 11, so Mbuotidem can apply. The F9 in Mathematics fails UNIUYO’s “at least a pass” rule, and he has no science credit. He needs to resit before Philosophy at UNIUYO is open to him.
Some Nigerian universities rank candidates with a 50:50 aggregate: UTME score divided by 8 (out of 50) plus the screening score scaled to 50. UNIUYO has not published this or any formula, so this is only an illustration. On that method, Akanimo’s 194 becomes 24.25, and a 64% screening score adds 32, for an aggregate of 56.25 out of 100.
How to apply for Philosophy at UNIUYO, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME with UNIUYO first: pick Philosophy (listed by JAMB as “Philosophy”) with English and any three subjects. If UNIUYO ended up as your second choice, do a JAMB change of institution before UNIUYO opens its form.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at an accredited CBT centre and check that every subject and grade shows correctly on your JAMB profile.
- Create an account on the UNIUYO portal: go to admissions.uniuyo.edu.ng, register with your details and verify the account.
- Pay ₦2,000 with Remita: generate the RRR on the portal and pay it; keep the receipt.
- Complete the form and upload documents: fill every section, upload the requested documents as PDF files, then print the 2026/2027 Screening Exercise Slip.
- Accept the offer on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept within the window JAMB gives you.
- Pay acceptance and do clearance: UNIUYO has not published its acceptance fee in any official source I reached, so confirm the amount on the portal before you pay anything.
Warning
UNIUYO’s 2026/2027 notice screened only candidates who chose UNIUYO first. If UNIUYO is your second choice, do a JAMB change of institution before the screening form opens.
JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 deadline for public universities; that date has now passed. Supplementary or late lists can still show up on CAPS, so if you applied, keep checking your status. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains what each status means.
In 2023/2024 UNIUYO ran a supplementary admission for candidates who had registered for its screening but missed their first-choice course. The Registrar’s notice took candidates with 140 and above into limited vacancies in nine faculties: Agriculture, Arts, Management Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Science, Social Sciences, Education, and Vocational Education, Library and Information Science. Arts was one of those faculties, so a candidate who missed a more competitive course could apply for a programme listed there, possibly including Philosophy. UNIUYO does not run a supplementary exercise on a fixed schedule, and its 2026/2027 floor is 150, so treat the old 140 as history.

Mistakes that cost Philosophy applicants a UNIUYO place
- Treating 150 as the admission score: it only lets you into screening.
- Leaving UNIUYO as second choice: the 2026/2027 notice screened first-choice candidates.
- No science credit at all: JAMB’s brochure says UNIUYO wants one for Philosophy.
- Failing Mathematics: UNIUYO asks for at least a pass.
- O’level missing on CAPS: admission cannot be processed without it.
- Accepting on CAPS and stopping there: the acceptance fee and clearance at UNIUYO are separate steps.
If you are writing the UTME again in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and how to do a JAMB change of institution.
