MAU Cut-Off Mark for Law 2027/2028: Requirements and Screening

MAU Yola is on the Council of Legal Education’s approved list (August 2026), but Law was not on the JAMB course list we used. Here is the 160 minimum, a safe target, subjects and the aptitude test.

The MAU cut off mark for Law that you can rely on is 160 in the UTME, the minimum Modibbo Adama University, Yola (MAU, formerly MAUTECH) set for every candidate registering for its 2026/2027 screening with MAU as first choice. MAU has not published a separate Law figure. JAMB’s national minimum for universities is 150, and Law applicants at MAU also sat an aptitude test in 2026, according to a blog report.

2027/2028 update: MAU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from MAU’s latest screening notice (2026/2027), as reprinted by Myschool. If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.

Two facts matter more than the score. First, the Council of Legal Education (CLE), which decides who can attend the Nigerian Law School, lists Modibbo Adama University, Yola at number 69 on its list of approved universities dated 14 August 2026. Second, Law was not on the main JAMB course list for MAU that we used (Myschool’s copy of JAMB’s course list for MAUTECH, checked 3 November 2026). So before you register, confirm that Law appears under MAU on your JAMB profile and, after screening, on CAPS. Below you will find the approval details, a safe target score (my advice), the subjects, the screening and test, a worked example and the CAPS steps.

CLE approval is the one that decides your future in law: the CLE notice warns that students admitted to universities without its approval will not be eligible for the Nigerian Law School. MAU is on the approved list, and three other universities on the same list carry moratorium notes while MAU does not.

The missing NUC row and the gap on the JAMB course list point the same way: Law looks new at MAU. The CLE’s undated quota list, which shows how many students each approved university may admit, does not include MAU either. A new programme is fine to join if it is approved, but you should check three things before paying any fee: that Law shows under MAU on your JAMB e-Facility profile, that MAU’s screening notice names it, and that the offer appears on CAPS as Law.

These are university-wide figures; MAU has published nothing specific to Law. A blog (abstechconnect, 22 July 2026) claims MAU sets a higher threshold for Law but gives no number and no MAU document, so I would not plan around it. If MAU publishes a Law cut-off for 2027/2028, this page will show it.

Safe target score for Law at MAU (my advice)

This section is my judgement as an admissions adviser. MAU has not published a departmental cut-off for Law, so none of these bands is an MAU rule.

Your UTME scoreMy read for MAU Law
Below 160Not eligible to register for MAU screening
160 to 209Eligible, but a Law place is unlikely
210 to 239Possible with a strong aptitude test and good O’level grades
240 to 259Competitive
260 and aboveStrong

For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 240, ideally 260. Law is one of the most demanded courses at any Nigerian university, and a new department with a small intake makes the competition sharper. For comparison, Adamawa State University, Mubi published 230 for Adamawa indigenes and 260 for others as its 2026/2027 Law cut-off. These bands are my advice, not MAU figures.

Catchment and state of origin

MAU is a federal university. Federal universities generally admit under a national guideline that splits places between merit, catchment area and educationally less developed states, and Adamawa and the neighbouring north eastern states fall in the less developed group. MAU itself has not published a catchment list or the split it used for 2026/2027, so treat your state of origin as a possible help, never as a guarantee. The indigene form on MAU’s screening form is where your state of origin is recorded.

UTME subject combination and O’level for MAU Law

RequirementLaw at MAU
UTME subjectsUse of English plus any three Arts or Social Science subjects (JAMB brochure; no MAU remark)
Subjects I would pickLiterature in English, Government, and one of CRS, IRS, History or Economics
O’levelFive credits including English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics
Exams acceptedWAEC, NECO, NABTEB
SittingsAt most two on MAU’s form
Aptitude testYes in 2026/2027 for Law applicants (blog report)

The JAMB brochure entry for Law has no MAU-specific remark, so the general rule applies: any three Arts or Social Science subjects after English. In practice, Literature in English is the safest anchor, because it is compulsory at O’level and many universities expect it. Government fits naturally, and the third can be CRS, IRS, History or Economics.

The O’level trap is Literature in English. A candidate with credits in English, Mathematics, Government, Economics and CRS but no Literature credit does not meet the general Law requirement, however high the UTME score.

Direct Entry into Law

The general brochure rule for Direct Entry into Law is two A level passes in Arts or Social Science subjects, or an NCE, ND or first degree at second class lower or better. MAU has not published a Law-specific DE rule, and new Law faculties often take few DE students. Ask MAU whether Law admits DE candidates before buying a form.

How MAU screening works for Law

MAU’s screening is mainly an online registration and document check. For Law, a blog report says MAU also held a Post-UTME aptitude test for Law and MBBS applicants on Thursday 10 September 2026 at 8:30 a.m. The report gave no venue, format or pass mark, and we could not confirm it on mau.edu.ng.

Worked example for a Law candidate

MAU has not published how it combines the UTME, the aptitude test and O’level grades. The figures below use the 50:50 method many Nigerian universities use, only to show how far apart two candidates can be. It is illustrative, not MAU’s formula.

  1. Maryam scored 252 in the UTME: 252 divided by 8 = 31.5 out of 50.
  2. Her test score is 68%: 68 divided by 2 = 34 out of 50.
  3. Illustrative aggregate: 31.5 plus 34 = 65.5 out of 100.
  4. Obinna scored 214 and 62% in the test: 26.75 plus 31 = 57.75, nearly 8 points behind Maryam on this method.

Both cleared 160 comfortably, which is why the minimum says little about Law. If MAU offers Obinna a social science course on CAPS through a transfer, he should weigh it rather than ignore it.

How to apply for Law at MAU, step by step

  1. Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
  2. Register the UTME correctly: pick Law with English, Literature in English, Government and one of CRS, IRS, History or Economics, and put Modibbo Adama University, Yola as your first choice. If you chose another school, do a JAMB change of institution before MAU’s screening opens.
  3. Upload your O’level to JAMB: go to a JAMB accredited centre and have your WAEC, NECO or NABTEB result uploaded so it shows on CAPS. MAU’s notice also asks you to upload it on the JAMB portal.
  4. Register for MAU screening: when the notice comes out, open the admissions portal from mau.edu.ng, verify your JAMB registration number, create an account and confirm your email.
  5. Pay and fill the form: generate a Remita RRR and pay (₦2,000 in 2025), then upload a passport photo (150 kb or less) and signature, enter your best five O’level subjects with the result checker details, add next of kin, and upload your O’level result, indigene form and birth certificate.
  6. Print your slip: print the acknowledgement slip and keep it for clearance.
  7. Sit the aptitude test: in 2026 Law applicants were called for a test after the online registration. Watch MAU’s portal and official pages for the date and venue.
  8. Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS. Accept or reject the offer. JAMB gives four weeks to accept.
  9. Pay acceptance and clear: MAU has not published its acceptance fee in any source we reached, so pay only through the invoice on the MAU portal after your CAPS offer shows.

Check first

Law was not on the JAMB course list for MAU that we used. Before you pay, confirm that Law appears under MAU on your JAMB profile, and accept only an offer that shows on CAPS as Law. The CLE warns that students admitted without its approval cannot attend the Nigerian Law School; MAU is approved, so a genuine CAPS offer is what you need to see.

Myschool reported around 3 October 2026 that MAU’s 2026/2027 admission list was out on JAMB CAPS. JAMB set 31 October 2026 as the 2026/2027 deadline for public universities to finish admissions; that date has now passed. If you applied this year, your CAPS page shows the final result. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status.

Studying Law at MAU

MAU’s law faculty is not described on any MAU page we could read. Wikipedia lists Common Law and Sharia Law among MAU’s departments, but we have not confirmed which of these admits through JAMB. The degree is the LL.B, which runs for five years in Nigeria and is followed by a year at the Nigerian Law School before call to the Bar.

What you study

  • Foundation: legal methods, Nigerian legal system, and constitutional law.
  • Core law subjects: contract, torts, criminal law, land law, equity and trusts, commercial law, and the law of evidence.
  • Other areas: family law, Islamic law, international law, jurisprudence, and human rights.
  • Final year: a long essay and electives such as tax, oil and gas, or company law.

After the Law School and call to the Bar, graduates practise as lawyers, work as legal officers in companies, banks and government, join the judiciary or the military legal services, or go into policy, compliance and teaching.

Other approved Law options in Adamawa on the same CLE list are Adamawa State University, Mubi (number 3) and the American University of Nigeria, Yola (number 16), a private university. Also read our JAMB change of institution guide if you need to switch universities.

Mistakes that cost Law applicants an MAU place

  • Not checking that Law shows under MAU on JAMB: it was missing from the course list we used.
  • No Literature in English credit: the general Law O’level rule needs it.
  • Treating 160 as an admission score: it is only the screening minimum.
  • Missing the aptitude test: Law applicants had a separate test date in 2026.
  • Paying an agent for a “Law slot”: genuine offers appear only on CAPS.

If you are trying again in 2027, read when JAMB 2027 registration starts and JAMB change of institution.

Sources and updates

The 160 minimum and the 20 July to 31 August 2026 screening window come from Myschool’s reprint of MAU’s 2026/2027 screening notice (15 July 2026); we could not open the original on mau.edu.ng, so treat it as a reprint. The 2025/2026 figures, the ₦2,000 fee, the portal and the form steps come from Studentship’s reprint of MAU’s signed 2025/2026 notice. The UTME, O’level and Direct Entry rules for Law are from the JAMB brochure entry reprinted on Myschool, which lists no exception for MAUTECH. The national minimum of 150, the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities and the four-week acceptance window come from the News Agency of Nigeria (11 May 2026). The admission list date is from Myschool (about 3 October 2026). The course list check uses Myschool’s list of JAMB courses for MAUTECH. NUC accreditation results are from the NUC’s Accreditation Results 1990 to 2025 (published September 2026), where MAU is listed under its old name. The approval comes from the Council of Legal Education public notice dated 14 August 2026 and signed by its Secretary; the quota check uses the CLE’s undated list of accredited universities and quotas. The aptitude test date is from abstechconnect (24 August 2026), a blog report we could not confirm on an MAU page. ADSU’s Law cut-off is from its official 2026/2027 cut-off list.
