The ABSU cut off mark for Biochemistry is 150 in the UTME. Abia State University, Uturu set 150 as the minimum score for its 2026/2027 online screening, for every course, and it did not publish a separate figure for Biochemistry. To take part you needed ABSU as your first or second choice, or a change of institution to ABSU.
2027/2028 update: ABSU cut-off marks usually stay the same from one year to the next, so the figures on this page are what 2027/2028 candidates should plan with. They come from the latest official notice (2026/2027). If the 2027/2028 notice changes anything, we will update this page.
Two things on JAMB’s brochure matter more for Biochemistry at ABSU than the 150 itself. ABSU insists on an O’level credit in Physics, and the brochure says ABSU takes no Direct Entry candidates into Biochemistry. Below you will find the official figures, a safe target score (my advice), the full subject rules, how ABSU’s screening works, a worked example, the CAPS steps and what the degree involves.
ABSU cut off mark for Biochemistry: the official figures
| Item | 2026/2027 position | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ABSU minimum UTME score (all courses) | 150, with ABSU as first or second choice | ABSU screening notice, via Osilight and Myschool reprints (June 2026) |
| JAMB national minimum for universities | 150 | JAMB 2026 policy meeting (11 May 2026) |
| Departmental cut-off for Biochemistry | Not published | No ABSU figure exists |
| Screening fee | ₦2,000 by e-payment | ABSU notice |
| Written Post-UTME test | None mentioned | ABSU notice describes online screening only |
| UTME subjects | Use of English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics | JAMB brochure (Myschool reprint) |
| Direct Entry | Not offered at ABSU for Biochemistry | JAMB brochure remark |
| NUC accreditation | Full | ABSU release reported by the Federal Ministry of Information (16 March 2023) |
| Safe target score | 200 and above | My advice |
Cut-off history for Biochemistry at ABSU
| Session | Figure | What it is | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026/2027 | 150 | ABSU minimum to register for screening, all courses | ABSU notice signed by the Registrar, Dr Acho Elendu, read through reprints |
| 2026 (national) | 150 | JAMB minimum for all universities | Official, JAMB policy meeting |
| 2025/2026 | Not verified | I could not open ABSU’s 2025/2026 notice | Unconfirmed |
| Any year, Biochemistry only | Not published | ABSU has never released a merit cut-off for this course | No official figure |
Some websites print an “ABSU departmental cut-off” for Biochemistry. None of them points to an ABSU document. The university sets one floor for screening and then admits on merit, and it does not publish the score of the last candidate admitted into any department.
Safe target score for Biochemistry at ABSU (my advice)
Biochemistry is where many candidates land after missing Medicine, Nursing or Pharmacy, and ABSU runs all three. That means a good share of the people in the Biochemistry pool scored well above 150. The bands below are my judgement as an admissions adviser; ABSU has not published anything like them.
| Your UTME score | My read for ABSU Biochemistry |
|---|---|
| Below 150 | Not eligible for ABSU screening |
| 150 to 174 | Eligible, but a long shot unless your O’level is excellent |
| 175 to 199 | Possible, especially with A or B grades in Chemistry, Biology and Physics |
| 200 to 229 | Competitive |
| 230 and above | Strong |
For the 2027 UTME I would aim for at least 200, with all five O’level credits in place, including Physics. If you end up in the 150s or 160s, still register for screening, but think now about a second course you would accept, such as Microbiology or Plant Science and Biotechnology.
ABSU is owned by the Abia State Government and admits students from every state. Its 2026/2027 notice did not mention any catchment or state-of-origin rule, so I would not count on Abia origin to rescue a weak score.
ABSU Biochemistry subject combination and O’level requirements
JAMB’s brochure entry for Biochemistry, as reprinted by Myschool, gives the UTME subjects as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics, with Use of English compulsory for everyone. ABSU has no UTME remark on that entry, so the general line applies.
| UTME subject | Status |
|---|---|
| Use of English | Compulsory |
| Biology | Compulsory |
| Chemistry | Compulsory |
| Physics or Mathematics | Pick one |
You can take Mathematics instead of Physics in the UTME. That choice does not remove Physics from your O’level, which is where ABSU differs from many schools.
O’level rules for Biochemistry at ABSU
| Requirement | What applies |
|---|---|
| General brochure rule | Five credits in English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology |
| ABSU remark | ABSU requires an O’level credit pass in Physics |
| ABSU notice | “Basic five O’level credit passes” under ABSU’s entry requirements |
| Exams accepted | WAEC, NECO or NABTEB (JAMB’s usual list) |
| Sittings | Not stated in ABSU’s notice or the brochure remark; one sitting is safer |
| Awaiting result | Not addressed in the notice as reprinted |
Some universities let a pass in Physics do for Biochemistry. The brochure singles ABSU out as one that wants a full credit. If you have a D7 or E8 in Physics, sort it out with a NECO or WAEC resit before you apply, or pick a course whose ABSU rules you already meet.
Direct Entry into ABSU Biochemistry
The general brochure rule allows Direct Entry with two A level passes from Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology, or an NCE, ND or HND in a related programme. But the same entry carries a remark that reads, in short, “BABCOCK, KSU, UNIPORT, ABSU and IMSU No Direct Entry”. So JAMB’s brochure lists ABSU among the universities that do not admit Biochemistry by Direct Entry.
ABSU’s 2026/2027 notice invited “all Direct Entry candidates” to screening, but that line covered the whole university, not this course. If you hold A levels or an ND and want Biochemistry at ABSU, write to the admissions office before you buy a DE form. Otherwise, sit the UTME or apply to a university whose brochure remark accepts DE.
How ABSU screening works
The rules below come from ABSU’s 2026/2027 screening notice, signed by the Registrar, Dr Acho Elendu, and reprinted by Myschool (8 June 2026) and Osilight (9 June 2026). I could not open the original on ABSU’s website. Expect the 2027/2028 exercise to look similar, but go by the new notice once it is out.
| Detail | ABSU 2026/2027 screening |
|---|---|
| Who could apply | Candidates with 150 or more who chose ABSU first or second, and candidates changing to ABSU |
| Direct Entry | DE candidates with the basic five O’level credits (but see the Biochemistry remark above) |
| Where to register | www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng |
| Where to upload documents | ABSU portal (portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng) and the JAMB portal |
| Documents | UTME result, O’level certificates, and degree certificates where they apply |
| Fee | ₦2,000 by e-payment through listed banks or a debit card |
| Test | None mentioned |
| Closing date | Not stated |
| If you skip it | Candidates who do not register “will not be considered for admission” |
Since the notice describes document uploads and no test, assume ABSU ranks you on your UTME score and your O’level grades. Keep checking the portal anyway, because a school can add a step in a later notice.
Worked example for two Biochemistry candidates
ABSU has not published an aggregate formula, so this example compares scores with the official minimum and my target only. It is illustrative.
Chiamaka scored 218, with B2 in English, B3 in Mathematics, A1 in Chemistry, B2 in Biology and C4 in Physics, all from one WAEC sitting.
- Eligibility: 218 minus 150 = 68. She clears ABSU’s minimum easily.
- Against my safe target: 218 minus 200 = 18 above the score I would call competitive.
- O’level check: five credits with Physics included, so ABSU’s remark is met.
- Advice: register for screening early, upload clean scans, and accept quickly once the offer shows on CAPS.
Emeka scored 231 but has D7 in Physics. His score is strong (231 minus 200 = 31 above my target), yet ABSU’s brochure remark asks for a Physics credit, so his O’level does not meet the Biochemistry rule. He should resit Physics or apply for a course whose ABSU rules he meets.
How to apply for Biochemistry at ABSU, step by step
- Get your JAMB profile code: send NIN, a space and your 11-digit NIN to 55019 or 66019 from the phone line linked to your NIN.
- Register the UTME with ABSU first or second: pick Biochemistry with Use of English, Biology, Chemistry and either Physics or Mathematics. If ABSU is not among your choices, do a JAMB change of institution before screening.
- Upload your O’level to CAPS: do it at a JAMB-accredited CBT centre. ABSU’s notice also asks for the O’level on its own portal.
- Register for screening: when ABSU announces the exercise, register on www.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng and upload your UTME result and O’level certificates on portal.abiastateuniversity.edu.ng.
- Pay the screening fee: it was ₦2,000 in 2026/2027, by e-payment. Keep every receipt and printout.
- Accept on CAPS: log in at efacility.jamb.gov.ng, choose Check Admission Status, then Access my CAPS, and accept. In 2026 JAMB gave candidates four weeks to accept.
- Pay acceptance and clear: ABSU has not published its acceptance fee or school fees in any source I reached. Pay only what your ABSU portal invoice shows.
Warning
ABSU published one minimum of 150 for all courses, and every genuine offer appears on JAMB CAPS. Ignore anyone selling a “Biochemistry slot” or a “departmental list”, and pay ABSU only through its own portal.
JAMB set 31 October 2026 for public universities to finish 2026/2027 admissions. If you applied in 2026, check CAPS now. Our JAMB CAPS guide explains each status, and our guide on checking your JAMB result covers what to do with your score.
Studying Biochemistry at ABSU
Biochemistry sits with the life and physical sciences at ABSU. A third-party copy of ABSU’s postgraduate programme list places the Department of Biochemistry under Biological and Physical Sciences, alongside Microbiology, Plant Science and Biotechnology, and Animal and Environmental Biology. The main campus is at Uturu in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State.
Accreditation
Biochemistry is one of seven ABSU programmes that received full NUC accreditation in a result announced in March 2023, according to a release from the university reported by the Federal Ministry of Information. The others were Medicine and Surgery, Nursing Science, Optometry, French, Sociology and Business Education. NUC full accreditation normally runs for five years, so expect the next visit around 2027. Ask the department about the current status before you pay acceptance.
What you study
ABSU has not put a course outline for Biochemistry online in any source I reached. A Nigerian B.Sc in Biochemistry normally covers:
- First year: general chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and general studies.
- Biomolecules: proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids, and how their structure decides what they do.
- Enzymes and metabolism: how enzymes work and how cells break down food for energy.
- Molecular biology: DNA replication, gene expression and basic genetics.
- Applied areas: nutritional, clinical, plant and industrial biochemistry, with some toxicology.
- Industrial training and project: a SIWES placement and a final year research project.
Nigerian B.Sc science degrees usually take four years from 100 level. ABSU’s own duration for Biochemistry is not confirmed in the sources I reached.

Mistakes that cost Biochemistry applicants an ABSU place
- No Physics credit: ABSU’s brochure remark asks for one, even if you took Mathematics in the UTME.
- Buying a DE form for Biochemistry: the brochure lists ABSU as not taking Direct Entry for this course.
- Treating 150 as safe: it only opens the screening door.
- ABSU third or not at all: the notice covered first and second choice, plus candidates who changed to ABSU.
- Skipping screening registration: ABSU said those who do not register will not be considered.
- Paying anyone outside the portal: ABSU payments go through its own e-payment channels.
If you need to switch course or school after the UTME, read JAMB change of course. If you are writing the UTME again, see when JAMB 2027 registration starts.
ABSU cut off mark for Biochemistry: frequently asked questions
